Abstract

Gravitational microlensing events of high magnification occur when the foreground lens system comes into near-perfect alignment with the background source star. Suitable alignments are most readily found in the dense [...], Observations of the gravitational microlensing event MOA 2003-BLG-32/OGLE 2003-BLG-219 are presented, for which the peak magnification was over 500, the highest yet reported. Continuous observations around the peak enabled a sensitive search for planets orbiting the lens star. No planets were detected. Planets 1.3 times heavier than Earth were excluded from more than 50% of the projected annular region from approximately 2.3 to 3.6 astronomical units surrounding the lens star, Uranus-mass planets were excluded from 0.9 to 8.7 astronomical units, and planets 1.3 times heavier than Saturn were excluded from 0.2 to 60 astronomical units. These are the largest regions of sensitivity vet achieved in searches for extrasolar planets orbiting any star.

Abstract

Observations and modelling of the gravitational microlensing event MACHO-97-BLG-41 are reported. The lens system is inferred to comprise a planet of around three Jupiter masses orbiting a binary stellar system comprising a late-K dwarf star and an M dwarf. It is suggested that such planets may be common.

Abstract

Microlensing experiments reveal that the dark matter in the Milky Way Galaxy exists as weakly interacting massive particles and as massive compact halo objects (MACHOs). MACHOs may range from the size of small planets to bodies four times larger than the Sun. MACHOs may even act as gravitational microlenses that can be detected even though the dark matter itself cannot be detected.

Abstract

We present the analysis of the first circumbinary planet microlensing event, OGLE-2007-BLG-349. This event has a strong planetary signal that is best fit with a mass ratio of q ≈ 3.4 × 10-4, but there is an additional signal due to an additional lens mass, either another planet or another star. We find acceptable light-curve fits with two classes of models: two-planet models (with a single host star) and circumbinary planet models. The light curve also reveals a significant microlensing parallax effect, which constrains the mass of the lens system to be M L ≈ 0.7 {; ; M}; ; ⊙ . Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images resolve the lens and source stars from their neighbors and indicate excess flux due to the star(s) in the lens system. This is consistent with the predicted flux from the circumbinary models, where the lens mass is shared between two stars, but there is not enough flux to be consistent with the two-planet, one-star models. So, only the circumbinary models are consistent with the HST data. They indicate a planet of mass m c = 80 ± 13 {; ; M}; ; \oplus , orbiting a pair of M dwarfs with masses of M A = 0.41 ± 0.07 and M B = 0.30 ± 0.07, which makes this the lowest-mass circumbinary planet system known. The ratio of the separation between the planet and the center of mass to the separation of the two stars is ˜40, so unlike most of the circumbinary planets found by Kepler, the planet does not orbit near the stability limit.

We present the first microlensing candidate for a free-floating exoplanet-exomoon system, MOA-2011-BLG-262, with a primary lens mass of M host ~ 4 Jupiter masses hosting a sub-Earth mass moon. The argument for an exomoon hinges on the system being relatively close to the Sun. The data constrain the product MLπrel where ML is the lens system mass and πrel is the lens-source relative parallax. If the lens system is nearby (large πrel), then ML is small (a few Jupiter masses) and the companion is a sub-Earth-mass exomoon. The best-fit solution has a large lens-source relative proper motion, μrel = 19.6 ± 1.6 mas yr–1, which would rule out a distant lens system unless the source star has an unusually high proper motion. However, data from the OGLE collaboration nearly rule out a high source proper motion, so the exoplanet+exomoon model is the favored interpretation for the best fit model. However, there is an alternate solution that has a lower proper motion and fits the data almost as well. This solution is compatible with a distant (so stellar) host. A Bayesian analysis does not favor the exoplanet+exomoon interpretation, so Occam's razor favors a lens system in the bulge with host and companion masses of M host = 0.12 +0.19-0.06 MΘ and mcomp = 18+28-10M⊕, at a projected separation of a⊥ = 0.84+0.25−0.14 AU. The existence of this degeneracy is an unlucky accident, so current microlensing experiments are in principle sensitive to exomoons. In some circumstances, it will be possible to definitively establish the mass of such lens systems through the microlensing parallax effect. Abstract

We present a detailed analysis of survey and follow-up observations of microlensing event OGLE-2012-BLG-0406 based on data obtained from 10 different observatories. Intensive coverage of the lightcurve, especially the perturbation part, allowed us to accurately measure the parallax effect and lens orbital motion. Combining our measurement of the lens parallax with the angular Einstein radius determined from finite-source effects, we estimate the physical parameters of the lens system. We find that the event was caused by a $2.73\pm 0.43\ M_{\rm J}$ planet orbiting a $0.44\pm 0.07\ M_{\odot}$ early M-type star. The distance to the lens is $4.97\pm 0.29$\ kpc and the projected separation between the host star and its planet at the time of the event is $3.45\pm 0.26$ AU. We find that the additional coverage provided by follow-up observations, especially during the planetary perturbation, leads to a more accurate determination of the physical parameters of the lens., 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

Abstract

We present the analysis of the gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2011-BLG-0251. This anomalous event was observed by several survey and follow-up collaborations conducting microlensing observations towards the Galactic Bulge. Based on detailed modelling of the observed light curve, we find that the lens is composed of two masses with a mass ratio q=1.9 x 10^-3. Thanks to our detection of higher-order effects on the light curve due to the Earth's orbital motion and the finite size of source, we are able to measure the mass and distance to the lens unambiguously. We find that the lens is made up of a planet of mass 0.53 +- 0.21,M_Jup orbiting an M dwarf host star with a mass of 0.26 +- 0.11 M_Sun. The planetary system is located at a distance of 2.57 +- 0.61 kpc towards the Galactic Centre. The projected separation of the planet from its host star is d=1.408 +- 0.019, in units of the Einstein radius, which corresponds to 2.72 +- 0.75 AU in physical units. We also identified a competitive model with similar planet and host star masses, but with a smaller orbital radius of 1.50 +- 0.50 AU. The planet is therefore located beyond the snow line of its host star, which we estimate to be around 1-1.5 AU., 12 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables; A&A in press

Abstract

Microlensing detections of cool planets are important for the construction of an unbiased sample to estimate the frequency of planets beyond the snow line, which is where giant planets are thought to form according to the core accretion theory of planet formation. In this paper, we report the discovery of a giant planet detected from the analysis of the light curve of a high-magnification microlensing event MOA-2010-BLG-477. The measured planet-star mass ratio is $q=(2.181\pm0.004)\times 10^{-3}$ and the projected separation is $s=1.1228\pm0.0006$ in units of the Einstein radius. The angular Einstein radius is unusually large $\theta_{\rm E}=1.38\pm 0.11$ mas. Combining this measurement with constraints on the "microlens parallax" and the lens flux, we can only limit the host mass to the range $0.13, Comment: 3 Tables, 12 Figures, accepted in ApJ

Abstract

A new data analysis toolkit which is suitable for the analysis of large-scale, long-term datasets and the phenomenon/anomalies they represent is described. The toolkit aims to expose and quantify scientific information in a number of forms contained within a time-series based dataset in a quantitative and rigorous manner, reducing the subjectivity of observations made, thereby supporting the scientific observer. The features contained within the toolkit include the ability to handle non-uniform datasets, time-series component determination, frequency component determination, feature/event detection and characterization/parameterization of local behaviours. An application is presented of a case study dataset arising from the ‘Lasgit’ experiment.

Abstract

The Large Scale Gas Injection Test (Lasgit) is a field-scale experiment designed to study the impact of gas build-up and subsequent migration through an engineered barrier system (EBS). Lasgit has a substantial experimental dataset containing in excess of 26 million datum points. The dataset is anticipated to contain a wealth of information, ranging from long-term trends and system behaviours to small-scale or ‘second-order’ features. In order to interrogate the Lasgit dataset, a bespoke computational toolkit, designed to expose and quantify difficult to observe phenomena in large, non-uniform datasets, has been developed and applied. Presented results focus on the investigation and interpretation of second-order events occurring in close proximity (temporally and spatially) to a known macro-scale gas flow event that occurred during the second gas injection test. The similarity of the investigated event to dilatant flow observed in laboratory experiments is noted, as is the evidence for localized flow pathways in the bentonite EBS. The sensitivity of the toolkit's ability to highlight second-order events is also evaluated.

Abstract

Microlensing event MACHO 97-SMC-1 is one of the rare microlensing events for which the source is a variable star, simply because most variable stars are systematically eliminated from microlensing studies. Using observational data for this event, we show that the intrinsic variability of a microlensed star is a powerful tool to constrain the nature of the lens by breaking the degeneracy between the microlens parallax and the blended light. We also present a statistical test for discriminating the location of the lens based on the \chi^2 contours of the vector \Lambda, the inverse of the projected velocity. We find that while SMC self lensing is somewhat favored over halo lensing, neither location can be ruled out with good confidence., Comment: 15 text pages + 2 tables + 7 figures. Abstract

We analyze the lightcurve of the microlensing event OGLE-2003-BLG-175/MOA-2003-BLG-45 and show that it has two properties that, when combined with future high resolution astrometry, could lead to a direct, accurate measurement of the lens mass. First, the lightcurve shows clear signs of distortion due to the Earth's accelerated motion, which yields a measurement of the projected Einstein radius \tilde r_E. Second, from precise astrometric measurements, we show that the blended light in the event is coincident with the microlensed source to within about 15 mas. This argues strongly that this blended light is the lens and hence opens the possibility of directly measuring the lens-source relative proper motion \vec\mu_\rel and so the mass M=(c^2/4G)\mu_\rel t_E \tilde r_E, where t_E is the measured Einstein timescale. While the lightcurve-based measurement of \tilde r_E is, by itself, severely degenerate, we show that this degeneracy can be completely resolved by measuring the direction of proper motion \vec\mu_\rel., Comment: 28 pages including 7 figures. The preliminary application of the toolkit, presented here, has resulted in a large number of phenomena being indicated/quantified, including highlighting of second-order events (small gas flows, perturbations in stress/pore-water sensors, etc.) and quantification of temperature record frequency content. Localized system behaviour has been shown to occur along with systematic aberrant behaviours that remain unexplained.

Abstract

We present a ∼5-yr optical light curve of the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A0538–66 obtained as a by-product of the MACHO Project. These data reveal both a long-term modulation at P=420.8±0.8 d and a short-term modulation at 16.6510±0.0022 d which, within errors, confirms the previously found orbital period. Furthermore, the orbital activity is only seen at certain phases of the 421-d cycle, suggesting that the long-term modulation is related to variations in the Be star envelope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The preparation and testing of compressed tablets of barium sulfate and sodium chloride coated with cellulose acetate succinate (CAS) are described, and the statistical evaluation of the data obtained is presented. The most satisfactory coatings were obtained when the test material, in an acetone-ethyl acetate solution, was applied by a modified “pan” method using talc as a dusting powder. Generally, CAS coatings which were stable for 3 1/2 hours in Simulated Gastric Fluid USP XVI dissolved sooner than control coatings of CAP applied and treated in the same manner. Disintegration times were slightly lower for most tablets placed directly into Simulated Intestinal Fluid, USP XVI than they were for tablets first treated with Simulated Gastric Fluid USP XVI for 31/2 hours and then tested in the former solution. None of the tablet coatings showed signs of cracks as a result of storage at −2 ± 2° for 21 days or 45 ± 2° for 10 days; however, some of these showed statistically significant differences in average disintegration time when compared with samples stored at room temperature. When test and control tablets were stored at 40 ± 2° and approximately 81% humidity, the majority of coatings were unsatisfactory. Tablets lost less than 3.56% tablet weight as a result of the simulated gastric fluid treatment. Preliminary in vivotests with human subjects indicate that CAS has merit as an enteric coating. Pancreatin appears to have little effect on the disintegration times of the test coating.
