New absorption cells designed specifically to achieve stable temperatures down to 66 K inside the sample compartment of an evacuated Bruker IFS-125HR Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) were developed at Connecticut College and tested at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The temperature stabilized cryogenic cells with path lengths of 24.29 and 20.38 cm were constructed of oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper and fitted with wedged ZnSe windows using vacuum tight indium seals. In operation, the temperature-controlled cooling by a closed-cycle helium refrigerator achieved stability of 0.01 K. The unwanted absorption features arising from cryodeposits on the cell windows at low temperatures were eliminated by building an internal vacuum shroud box around the cell which significantly minimized the growth of cryodeposits. The effects of vibrations from the closed-cycle helium refrigerator on the FTS spectra were characterized. Using this set up, several high-resolution spectra of methane isotopologues broadened with nitrogen were recorded in the 1200-1800 per centimeter spectral region at various sample temperatures between 79.5 and 296 K. Such data are needed to characterize the temperature dependence of spectral line shapes at low temperatures for remote sensing of outer planets and their moons. Initial analysis of a limited number of spectra in the region of the R(2) manifold of the v4 fundamental band of 13CH4 indicated that an empirical power law used for the temperature dependence of the N2-broadened line widths would fail to fit the observed data in the entire temperature range from 80 to 296 K; instead, it follows a temperature-dependence similar to that reported by Mondelain et al. [17,18]. The initial test was very successful proving that a high precision Fourier transform spectrometer with a completely evacuated optical path can be configured for spectroscopic studies at low temperatures relevant to the planetary atmospheres.

We describe the updates to the spectroscopic parameters of ozone and its isotopes in the 1996 HITRAN compilation. Recent published studies not included in HITRAN are also summarized. Finally, we report the identification of infrared lines of the v(sub 3) bands of O-16O-16O-17 and O-16O-17O-16 in high-resolution solar spectra recorded by stratospheric balloon-borne and ground-based Fourier transform spectrometers.

Results are presented of an analysis of 29 room-temperature laboratory absorption spectra of a dilute CH4 sample in dry air, N2, and O2 at total pressures ranging from 60 to 550 torr, yielding values of pressure-broadening and pressure-induced-shift coefficients for more than 450 vibration-rotation transitions in the nu(3), nu(2) + nu(4), and 2nu(2)-super-2 bands of (C-12)H4. Comparisons of the present results for the nu(3) and nu(2) + nu(4) bands with previous measurements on other bands and isotopes of CH4 show that, for a given transition, broadening by air and N2 are nearly equal, and broadening by O2 is smaller by less than 10 percent. It is also found that the pressure shift coefficients are more vibrational dependent than the pressure broadening coefficients.

Accurate measurements of the positions of lines of the (1-0) vibration-rotation bands of HCl-35 and HCl-37 are reported. The new measurements have been derived from a laboratory spectrum recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer operated at an unapodized spectral resolution of 0.0060/cm. Molecular constants are reported from a simultaneous least-squares analysis of these measurements and selected infrared and far-infrared data taken from the literature. The motivation for the present investigation is the need for improved HCl line positions for use in IR atmospheric remote sensing investigations.

We describe in this paper the modifications, improvements, and enhancements to the HITRAN molecular absorption database that have occurred in the two editions of 1991 and 1992. The current database includes line parameters for 31 species and their isotopomers that are significant for terrestrial atmospheric studies. This line-by-line portion of HITRAN presently contains about 709,000 transitions between 0 and 23,000/cm and contains three molecules not present in earlier versions: COF2, SF6, and H2S. The HITRAN compilation has substantially more information on chlorofluorocarbons and other molecular species that exhibit dense spectra which are not amenable to line-by-line representation. The user access of the database has been advanced, and new media forms are now available for use on personal computers.

Lorentz-broadening coefficients and pressure-induced line-shift coefficients of 34 individual lines have been determined for the P(40) to R(40) vibration-rotation transitions in the nu(3) fundamental of CO2 using N2 as the buffer gas. The parameters were derived from 0.01/cm resolution infrared absorption spectra recorded using the McMath Fourier transform spectrometer and a nonlinear, least-squares fitting algorithm. It is concluded that the N2-broadening coefficients obtained in the present study agree well with recent high resolution measurements. The results are considered to be of importance not only for predicting the infrared spectrum of the atmosphere due to CO2 absorption or emission but also for verifying theoretical calculations.

Numerous changes made for the 1991 and 1992 versions of the HITRAN database in the 0-6185/cm region for molecular line parameters of methane are described. An assessment of deficiencies in the parameters is presented.

Lorentz-broadening and pressure-induced line-shift coefficients are determined experimentally for 126 transitions in the nu2 band of D2(O-16) from laboratory spectra with a Fourier-transform spectrometer. A nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure is employed to measure transitions up to J double-prime = 12 in the buffer gases air, nitrogen, and oxygen. The N2-broadening/O2-broadening coefficient ratio is correlated with the magnitude of the O2-broadening coefficient, and the pressure coefficients are not correlated with line widths.

Transmission measurements made on near-infrared laboratory methane spectra have previously been fit using a Malkmus band model. The laboratory spectra were obtained in three groups at temperatures averaging 112, 188, and 295 K; band model fitting was done separately for each temperature group. These band model parameters cannot be used directly in scattering atmosphere model computations, so an exponential sum model is being developed which includes pressure and temperature fitting parameters. The goal is to obtain model parameters by least square fits at 10/cm intervals from 3800 to 9100/cm. These results will be useful in the interpretation of current planetary spectra and also NIMS spectra of Jupiter anticipated from the Galileo mission.

Absolute intensities and self-, air- and N2-broadened half-widths have been determined for the first time for individual lines in the nu3(A1) band of (C-12)H3D near 7.6 microns from measurements of individual vibration-rotation lines using a tunable diode laser spectrometer. The intensity measurements are believed to be accurate to within three percent. Within experimental uncertainties, equal broadening efficiencies are found for both air and nitrogen. Self-broadened half-widths determined for three transitions yield an average half-width value of 0.803 + or -0.0010/cm/atm at 296 K.

Air-broadened half-widths of 18 transitions in the nu6 band of H2O2 between 1252/cm and 1291/cm have been determined from spectra recorded at room temperature using a tunable diode laser spectrometer. The preparation of the H2O2 gas samples for the measurements is described, and the data analysis is discussed, including the derivation of Lorentz broadening coefficients and the contribution of molecular collisions to the measured Lorentz half-widths. For the 18 transitions, the half-widths varied from 0.0923/cm/atm to 0.1155/cm/atm at 296 K, with a mean value of 0.1020/cm/atm. An error of less than 10 percent is estimated for these results.

Absolute intensities for 726 unblended lines in 20 bands of C-12(O-16)2, C-13(O-16)2, O-16C-12O-18, and O-16C-12O-17 in the 4.8-micron spectral region have been determined using a natural sample of ultrahigh-purity CO2. Spectral data were recorded at low pressure (less than 10 torr) and room temperature with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex on Kitt Peak. Derived vibrational band intensities and coefficients of the F factor for each band were compared to values of the 1982 Air Force Geophysics Laboratory line parameters compilation. The present work fills out the CO2 lines in the 5-micron band systems. Lines in the strongest of these measured bands are being used to infer atmospheric pressure from high-resolution stratospheric spectra recorded during the Spacelab 3 Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy experiment.

The first experimental measurements of air- and N2-broadened halfwidths of single lines in the nu2 band of D2O were obtained at room temperature, using a semiconductor tunable diode laser operating in the 1250-1340/cm region. The difference observed between air- and N2-broadened halfwidths may be attributed to the different quadrupole moments of the perturbing gas constituents. It is noted that both the airand N2-broadened halfwidths for the two ortho-para doublets are the same, within the present experimental uncertainties.

The Halogen Occulation Experiment (HALOE) gas response test simulations were completed using the HALOE spectroscopic instrument model. A new series of programs were written for routine repetitive runs of the spectroscopic model to make it more user friendly for certain studies. Some of the limitations of the model were eased for atmospheric studies. Atmospheric signal profiles were calculated for inclusion in the electronic model programs. Analysis of additional spectral bands of CO2 in the 3 micron region was continued. A program of measurement of the air broadened halfwidths of spectral lines in the nu (sub 3) fundamental band of CH4 was started and over 40 lines measured.

Tunable diode laser measurements of air-broadened and N2-broadened halfwidths are reported for 23 lines in the nu(4) band of C-13H4, between 1260 and 1360/cm. For all lines, at least three scans of each of four or more pressures were recorded. The experimental halfwidths presently obtained for C-13H4 are both larger and smaller than the U.S. Air Force Geophysics Laboratory values.

Air-broadened and N2-broadened halfwidths at room temperature for twenty-five transitions in the nu-4 fundamental band of (C-12)H4 have been determined from IR absorption spectra recorded with a tunable diode laser spectrometer. Two tunable diode lasers operating in the 1250-1380-kayser region were used to obtain these data. Air-broadened halfwidths for twenty of these lines were also determined from additional spectra recorded at 0.01-kayser resolution with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex on Kitt Peak. The air-broadened halfwidths obtained from these two techniques are very consistent with agreement better than 3 percent in most cases.

A nonlinear least-squares spectral fitting procedure has been used to derive experimental absolute intensities for over 300 unblended lines belonging to twelve CO2 bands in the 5.2-micron region. The spectral data were recorded at 0.01/cm resolution and room temperature with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex at the National Solar Observatory on Kitt Peak and have a signal-to-rms noise ratio of 2000-4000. A natural sample of carbon dioxide was used as the sample gas. For each band, the measured line intensities have been analyzed to derive the vibrational band intensity and coefficients of the F factor. The results are compared to the values used to calculate the intensities in the 1982 Air Force Geophysics Laboratory line parameters compilation.

The absolute intensities of individual lines of eleven relatively weak bands of (C-12)(O-16)2, (C-13)(O-16)2, (O-16)(C-12)(O-18), and (O-16)(C-12)(O-17) near 2050/cm were measured and recorded at room temperature and 0.01/cm resolution with the Fourier transform spectrometer located in the McMath solar telescope complex located at the National Solar Observatory on Kitt Peak. Each spectrum was obtained with an integration time of one hour, the temperature and pressure were monitored during this time, and the signal-to-rms noise in the 5 micron region was approximately 4000 for all scans. The intensities were determined from analysis of 1-2/cm segments of spectra using nonlinear least-squares spectral curve fitting, and analyzed to determine the vibrational band intensity and F-factor coefficients for each of the bands. The results are pertinent to a wide variety of problems in atmospheric physics and for the analysis of remote-sensing data.

Absolute intensities for over 800 transitions belonging to twelve bands of (C-12)(O-16)2, (O-16)(C-12)(O-18), (O-16)(C-12)(O-17), and (O-16)(C-13)(O-18) molecules in the 2395-2680/cm spectral region have been derived using a nonlinear least-squares spectral fitting procedure. The data used in the analysis were recorded at room temperature and low pressure with the 0.01/cm resolution Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex at the National Solar Observatory. The measured intensities obtained for each band have been analyzed to derive the vibrational band intensity and F-factor coefficients. The results are compared with other published values.

A long path, low pressure laboratory spectrum of carbon dioxide is presented for the spectral region 1830 to 2010/cm. The data were recorded at 0.01/cm resolution and room temperature with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex at Kitt Peak National Observatory. A list of positions and assignments is given for the 1038 lines observed in this region. A total of 30 bands and subbands of 12C1602, 13C1602, 12C160180, 12C160170, and 13C160180 were observed. A nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure has been used to derive absolute intensities for lines in the P, R, and Q branches of the (11/1/0)II-00/0/0 band of (C-12)(O-16)2 (band center = 1932/cm) from long-path 0.01/cm resolution laboratory spectra. The spectral data were recorded at room temperature and low pressure (less than 10 torr) with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The observed line intensities were analyzed to derive the vibrational band intensity and F-factor coefficients. To obtain a good fit to the data, it was necessary to include terms in the expression for the F factor, which account for Coriolis-type and Fermi-type interactions and centrifugal distortion effects.

A long path, low pressure laboratory spectrum of carbon dioxide is presented for the spectral region 1830 to 2010/cm. The data were recorded at 0.01/cm resolution and room temperature with the Fourier transform spectrometer in the McMath solar telescope complex at Kitt Peak National Observatory. A list of positions and assignments is given for the 1038 lines observed in this region. A total of 30 bands and subbands of 12C16O2, 13C16O2, 12C16O18O, 12C16O17O, and 13C16O18O were observed.

A ratio spectrum of Pluto shows methane absorption bands at 6200, 7200, 7900, 8400, 8600, 8900, and 10,000 A. The heavy saturation of the 8900 band as compared to the other bands indicates a gaseous origin for the observed absorptions. A total methane abundance of 80 + or - 20 m-am is derived, and an upper limit to the total pressure of approximately .05 atm is set. The methane atmosphere would be stable if the mass of Pluto is increased 50% over its present value and its radius is 1400 km. A heavier gas mixed with the methane atmosphere would also aid its stability.

Laboratory band-model absorption coefficients of CH4 were used to calculate the Uranus spectrum from 5400 to 10,400 A. A good fit for both strong and weak bands for the Uranus spectrum over the entire wavelength interval was achieved; three atmospheric models were employed: (1) a reflecting layer model; (2) a homogeneous scattering layer model; and (3) a clear atmosphere sandwiched between two scattering layers. The spectrum for the reflecting layer model shows serious discrepancies but indicates that large amounts of CH4 are necessary to reproduce the Uranus spectrum. Both scattering models gave reasonably good fits; the homogeneous model requires a particle scattering albedo of at least 0.998 and an abundance per scattering mean free path of about 1 km-am. For the sandwich model, a continuum single scattering albedo of 0.995 was derived for the upper scattering layer, and the scattering optical depth variable wavelength was consistent with Rayleigh scattering.

A three-stage Varo image tube was used to obtain spectra of Pluto and Triton as well as comparison stars for the spectral region from 6800 to 9000 A, and the question of whether an adsorption feature near 8900 A indicates the presence of an atmosphere is considered. The feature, more definitive for Pluto than for Triton, occurs in a wavelength region which produces a steeply diminishing response in the image tube. If certain conditions are assumed, the pressure indicated by the feature is the pressure that can be expected from the equilibrium vapor pressure of a methane frost. If the absorption is spurious, the analysis indicates upper limits for methane on Pluto and Triton.

Second and last set of the B-spectrometer records, concluding the series of the Arizona-NASA Infrared Solar Spectrum Atlas. The value of the presented series lies primarily in serving as reference to high-altitude planetary spectra taken with similar resolution, 6-10,000. The wavelength interval covered is 13350-34100 A.
