This paper presents the results of a research project to study the seismic resistance of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened concrete members after fire exposure. Specifically, the paper presents results of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete columns exposed to a standard fire including temperatures measured during the test and a discussion of the loads applied to the columns. Finally, the paper also presents the impact of lateral loading on structural columns after fire to assess the effectiveness of structural resistance of fire-damaged FRP strengthened building elements in case of an earthquake. Numerical models to simulate the lateral behaviour are presented and the predictions are compared to the test results. Since the FRP strengthened columns were insulated with fire protection, the lateral load resistance of the unstrengthened column was reduced by less than 5% due to fire exposure. Cet article presente les resultats d'un projet de recherche sur l'etude de la resistance sismique des poutres en beton renforce de PRF apres une exposition au feu. Plus specifiquement, cet article presente les resultats de colonnes de beton renforce de PRF exposees a un incendie standard, incluant des temperatures mesurees durant l'essai et une discussion sur les charges appliquees aux colonnes. Finalement, il presente egalement l'impact d'une charge laterale sur les colonnes structurales apres un incendie pour evaluer l'efficacite de la resistance structurale des poutres renforcees de PRF endommagees par le feu dans le cas d'un seisme. Les modeles numeriques simulant le comportement lateral sont presentes et les previsions sont comparees aux resultats des essais. Puisque les colonnes renforcees de PRF etaient munies d'une protection contre les incendies, la resistance contre les charges laterales des colonnes non renforcees ont ete reduites de moins de 5% en raison de l'exposition au feu. Building codes in many countries around the world are shifting from prescriptive-based to performance-based, a move that is due, in part, to the negative aspects of the prescrip tive codes, to economic and social reasons, to advances made in fire science and engineering, to the need for codes to use fire safety engineering principles within the context of their regulations and to the global harmonization of regulation systems. In addition, the performance-based codes approach improves the regulatory environment by establishing clear code objectives and safety criteria and leaving the means of achiev ing these objectives to the designer. Hence, the codes will be more flexible in allowing innovation, more functional, less complex and easier to apply. Another advantage of performance-based codes is that they will permit the incorporation and use of the latest building and fire research, data and models. These models will be used as the tools for measuring the performance of any number of design alternatives against the established safety levels. The optimum design would meet the code safety objectives and the needs of both the designer and the user. The claimed advantages of such a design is that it can provide improved safety and design functionality at reduced costs.This paper presents the results of the literature survey on the efforts to move from the prescriptive building regulations to performance-based regulations. This paper also describes the required steps for developing performance-based codes. The description outlines the set of objectives formulated internationally, the deterministic and probabilistic design criteria for quantifying the desired fire safety objectives, and safety factors that should be applied to the performance criteria to permit the designer to conservatively assess the design and to allow for a smaller margin of error. Finally, some of the existing fire safety design methods are presented along with a brief description of computerized fire tools. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
