International audience; Large scale and low-cost nanopatterning of materials is of tremendous interest for optoelectronic devices. Nanoimprint lithography has emerged in recent years as a nanofabrication strategy that is high-throughput and has a resolution comparable to that of electron-beam lithography (EBL). It is enabled by pattern replication of an EBL master into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), that is then used to pattern a resist for further processing, or a sol−gel that could be calcinated into a solid material. Although the sol−gel chemistry offers a wide spectrum of material compositions, metals are still difficult to achieve. This gap could be bridged by using colloidal nanoparticles as resist, but deep understanding of the key parameters is still lacking. Here, we use supported metallic nanocubes as a model resist to gain fundamental insights into nanoparticle imprinting. We uncover the major role played by the surfactant layer trapped between nanocubes and substrate, and measure its thickness with subnanometer resolution by using gap plasmon spectroscopy as a metrology platform. This enables us to quantify the van der Waals (VDW) interactions responsible for the friction opposing the nanocube motion, and we find that these are almost in quantitative agreement with the Stokes drag acting on the nanocubes during nanoimprint, that is estimated with a simplified fluid mechanics model. These results reveal that a minimum thickness of surfactant is required, acting as a spacer layer mitigating van der Waals forces between nanocubes and the substrate. In the light of these findings we propose a general method for resist preparation to achieve optimal nanoparticle mobility and show the assembly of printable Ag and Au nanocube grids, that could enable the fabrication of lowcost transparent electrodes of high material quality upon nanocube epitaxy.

This work consists of optimizing TiN plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition using two different N-sources: NH[Formula: see text] and N[Formula: see text]. In addition to maximizing the growth per cycle (GPC) and to shorten the deposition duration, comprehensive in situ and ex situ physicochemical characterizations give valuable information about the influence of the N-source nature, their dilution in Ar, and the plasma power on layer’s final properties. N[Formula: see text] and NH[Formula: see text] dilutions within Ar are extensively investigated since they are critical to decreasing the mean free path ([Formula: see text]) of plasma-activated species. A 1:1 gas ratio for the N-sources:Ar mixture associated with low flows (20 sccm) is optimal values for achieving highest GPCs (0.8 Å/cycle). Due to lower reactivity and shorter [Formula: see text] of the excited species, N[Formula: see text] plasma is more sensitive to power and generator-to-sample distance, and this contributes to lower conformality than with NH[Formula: see text] plasma. The resistivity of the initial amorphous films was high ([Formula: see text] cm) and was significantly reduced after thermal treatment ([Formula: see text] cm). This demonstrates clearly the beneficial effect of the crystallinity of the film conductivity. Though N[Formula: see text] process appears slightly slower than the NH[Formula: see text] one, it leads to an acceptable film quality. It should be considered since it is nonharmful, and the process could be further improved by using a reactor exhibiting optimized geometry.

Lead halide perovskite solar cells have been gaining more and more interest. In only a decade, huge research efforts from interdisciplinary communities enabled enormous scientific advances that rapidly led to energy conversion efficiency near that of record silicon solar cells, at an unprecedented pace. However, while for most materials the best solar cells were achieved with single crystals (SC), for perovskite the best cells have been so far achieved with polycrystalline (PC) thin films, despite the optoelectronic properties of perovskite SC are undoubtedly superior. Here, by taking as example monocrystalline methylammonium lead halide, the authors elaborate the literature from material synthesis and characterization to device fabrication and testing, to provide with plausible explanations for the relatively low efficiency, despite the superior optoelectronics performance. In particular, the authors focus on how solar cell performance is affected by anisotropy, crystal orientation, surface termination, interfaces, and device architecture. It is argued that, to unleash the full potential of monocrystalline perovskite, a holistic approach is needed in the design of next-generation device architecture. This would unquestionably lead to power conversion efficiency higher than those of PC perovskites and silicon solar cells, with tremendous impact on the swift deployment of renewable energy on a large scale.

Infrared absorption spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool that enables the identification of molecular species. The sensitivity of this technique, that is strongly limited by the small absorption cross-section of molecular vibration, can be greatly improved by resonant interaction with nano-antennas via the surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) mechanism. However, most of the examples of SEIRA concern solid-state molecular layers adsorbed on the nano-antennas, while the detection of gas traces still remains elusive due to the spatial extent of the near-field that is used to amplify the molecular vibrations resonantly. Here, a hybrid system composed of a plasmonic nanoantenna array coupled with nanosized zeolite coating for detection of volatile organic compounds in the near field of the resonators is demonstrated. The concerted action of the coating and the nano-antennas enabled the authors to detect record traces of benzene (25 ppb) within 10 min. This approach may ultimately allow the fabrication of a compact system for rapid detection of pharmaceutical and biocompounds with high sensitivity and high selectivity.

Three-dimensional (3D) characterization of nanomaterials is traditionally performed by either cross-sectional milling with a focused ion beam (FIB), or transmission electron microscope tomography. While these techniques can produce high quality reconstructions, they are destructive, or require thin samples, often suspended on support membranes. Here, we demonstrate a complementary technique allowing non-destructive investigation of the 3D structure of samples on bulk substrates. This is performed by imaging backscattered electron (BSE) emission at multiple primary beam energies - as the penetration depth of primary electrons is proportional to the beam energy, depth information can be obtained through variations in the beam acceleration. The detected signal however consists of a mixture of the penetrated layers, meaning the structure's three-dimensional geometry can only be retrieved after deconvolving the BSE emission profile from the observed BSE images. This work demonstrates this novel approach by applying a blind source separation deconvolution algorithm to multi-energy acquired BSE images. The deconvolution can thereby allow a 3D reconstruction to be produced from the acquired images of an arbitrary sample, showing qualitative agreement with the true depth structure, as verified through FIB cross-sectional imaging.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising and environmentally friendly route for the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen. However, the efficiency of this energy conversion process is low because of the limited light absorption and rapid bulk recombination of charge carriers. In this study, the combination of a novel ternary sensitizer AgFeS2 , having a narrow bandgap of 0.9 eV, with a BiVO4 electrode is presented for the enhancement of the solar-energy-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. The photoelectrochemical properties of this combined material were investigated and the photocurrent densities of AgFeS2 -BiVO4 composite electrodes were greatly enhanced compared with pristine BiVO4 (15 times higher at 0.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl under AM 1.5G illumination). The enhanced photoelectrochemical properties arise from extended light absorption, fast charge transfer and appropriate energy gap alignment. It was demonstrated that AgFeS2 nanowires are promising inorganic sensitizers for improving the efficiency of solar water splitting.

Nanoscale chiral valley-photon interface Occupation of different valleys within the band structure of some materials can be used to encode information. That information is typically encoded in terms of the chirality or polarization of emitted photons. Gong et al. combined a plasmonic silver nanowire with a flake of the transition metal dichalcogenide WS 2 to form a nanophotonic platform for the transfer of solid-state spin into optical information over mesoscopic distances. The direction of light emission from the nanowire was strongly dependent on the spin-orbit coupling of light and the WS2 layer. Such a highly efficient interface should prove useful for developing valleytronics into a practical on-chip technology. Science , this issue p. 443

The chiral interaction between transverse optical spin and circularly polarized emitters provides a novel way to manipulate spin information at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate the valley(spin)-dependent directional emission of transition metal chalcogenides (TMDs) into plasmonic eigenstates of a silver nanowire. Due to the spin-path locking of the plasmonic eigenstates, the emission from the two different valleys of TMDs material will couple to the guided modes propagating in opposite directions. The high valley polarization of TMDs and high density of the transverse optical spin of the plasmonic wire together offer a novel platform for a chiral network even at room temperature without any magnetic fields.

In this paper, the covalent immobilization and luminescence enhancement of a europium (Eu(III)) complex in a porous silicon (pSi) layer with a microcavity (pSiMC) structure are demonstrated. The alkyne-pendant arm of the Eu(III) complex was covalently immobilized on the azide-modified surface via ligand-assisted "click" chemistry. The design parameters of the microcavity were optimized to obtain an efficient luminescence-enhancing device. Luminescence enhancements by a factor of 9.5 and 3.0 were observed for Eu(III) complex bound inside the pSiMC as compared to a single layer and Bragg reflector of identical thickness, respectively, confirming the increased interaction between the immobilized molecules and the electric field in the spacer of the microcavity. When comparing pSiMCs with different resonance wavelength position, luminescence was enhanced when the resonance wavelength overlapped with the maximum emission wavelength of the Eu(III) complex at 614 nm, allowing for effective coupling between the confined light and the emitting molecules. The pSiMC also improved the spectral color purity of the Eu(III) complex luminescence. The ability of a pSiMC to act as an efficient Eu(III) luminescence enhancer, combined with the resulting sharp linelike emission, can be exploited for the development of ultrasensitive optical biosensors. UNLABELLED: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based sensors enable the rapid, label-free and highly sensitive detection of a large range of biomolecules. We have previously shown that, using silver-coated optical fibers with a high surface roughness, re-scattering of light from the surface plasmons is possible, turning SPR into a radiative process. The efficacy of this platform has proven for the detection of large biomolecules such as viruses, proteins and enzymes. Here, we demonstrate that by bringing together this novel emission-based fiber SPR platform with an improved surface functionalization process aimed at properly orienting the antibodies, it is possible to rapidly and specifically detect the regulation of human apolipoprotein E (apoE), a low-molecular-weight protein (~39 kDa) known to be involved in cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease and gastric cancer. The results obtained clearly show that this new sensing platform has the potential to serve as a tool for point-of-decision medical diagnostics. Monocrystalline materials are essential for optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, LEDs, lasers, and transistors to reach the highest performance. Advances in synthetic chemistry now allow for high quality monocrystalline nanomaterials to be grown at low temperature in solution for many materials; however, the realization of extended structures with control over the final 3D geometry still remains elusive. Here, a new paradigm is presented, which relies on epitaxy between monocrystalline nanocube building blocks. The nanocubes are assembled in a predefined pattern and then epitaxially connected at the atomic level by chemical growth in solution, to form monocrystalline nanopatterns on arbitrary substrates. As a first demonstration, it is shown that monocrystalline silver structures obtained with such a process have optical properties and conductivity comparable to single-crystalline silver. This flexible multiscale process may ultimately enable the implementation of monocrystalline materials in optoelectronic devices, raising performance to the ultimate limit.

Nanoscale materials are promising for optoelectronic devices because their physical dimensions are on the order of the wavelength of light. This leads to a variety of complex optical phenomena that, for instance, enhance absorption and emission. However, quantifying the performance of these nanoscale devices frequently requires measuring absolute absorption at the nanoscale, and remarkably, there is no general method capable of doing so directly. Here, we present such a method based on an integrating sphere but modified to achieve submicron spatial resolution. We explore the limits of this technique by using it to measure spatial and spectral absorptance profiles on a wide variety of nanoscale systems, including different combinations of weakly and strongly absorbing and scattering nanomaterials (Si and GaAs nanowires, Au nanoparticles). This measurement technique provides quantitative information about local optical properties that are crucial for improving any optoelectronic device with nanoscale dimensions or nanoscale surface texturing.

Porous silicon samples have been subjected to plasma treatments under ammonia atmosphere. The samples were characterized by IR, UV-Visible reflectance and stationary photoluminescence spectroscopies. A deep modification concerning both surface and bulk properties of silicon nanocrystals is clearly observed. In particular, the nanocrystals surface is covered by amino groups, as checked by IR spectroscopy, whilst bulk modification can be inferred by UV-Visible reflectance and luminescence characterizations, in particular for high porosity. The results demonstrate that plasma assisted nitridation yields to a controllable modification of the optical and chemical properties of porous silicon, without need of thermal annealing and/or wet chemical processes. A transparent conducting film composed of regular networks of silver nanowires is obtained by combining a soft solution process (Tollens' reaction) and nanoimprint lithography. The solution-grown nanowire networks show a threefold higher conductivity than grids obtained by metal evaporation. This is due to the larger grain size in the solution-grown nanowires, which results in a strong reduction of electron scattering by grain boundaries.

For decades Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) has been one of the corner stones of label free biosensing with a wide range of architectures including optical fiber based SPR. Traditionally, the resonance is monitored through reflectivity measurements at a single wavelength as a function of the incident angle in a standard Kretschmann configuration, or transmission of broadband light through an optical fiber. In both cases, SPR is inferred through optical losses. An alternative approach is to use SPR scattering induced by rough metallic coatings, enabling to turn an intrinsically nonradiative process into a radiative one. As a result, the SPR signal corresponding to the resonance can be seen as light at specific wavelengths being re-emitted by the rough metallic coating. Here, we present results we have achieved using SPR scattering as an alternative approach for optical fiber based plasmonic sensors. Although the use of a rough metallic coating induces some inherent limitations, such as a lower resolution, the architectural advantages and simplicity of the approach offer additional opportunities, such as multiplexing and self-referencing, which are not possible otherwise with a single fiber SPR sensor. A way to overcome the lower resolution that involves the use of microstructured optical fibers, as well as a new perspective on a complementary application, such as Metal Enhanced Fluorescence, which greatly benefits from SPR scattering, will be presented. Although the use of rough metallic coating induces some inherent limitations, the architectural advantages and higher efficiency in some application such as Metal Enhanced Fluorescence as well as ways forward to overcome these limitation will be presented.

We report on the synthesis of semiconducting AgFeS2 nanowires, obtained from the conversion of Ag nanowires. The study of the conversion process shows that the formation of Ag2S nanowires, as an intermediate step, precedes the conversion into AgFeS2 nanowires. The chemical properties of AgFeS2 nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy at intermediate steps of the conversion process and show that the temperature at which the reaction takes place is critical to obtaining nanowires as opposed to nanotubes. Optical measurements on nanowire ensembles confirm the semiconducting nature of AgFeS2, with a direct band gap of 0.88 eV.

Semiconductor nanowires are among the most promising candidates for next generation photovoltaics. This is due to their outstanding optical and electrical properties which provide large optical cross sections while simultaneously decoupling the photon absorption and charge carrier extraction length scales. These effects relax the requirements for both the minority carrier diffusion length and the amount of semiconductor needed. Metal-semiconductor core-shell nanowires have previously been predicted to show even better optical absorption than solid semiconductor nanowires and offer the additional advantage of a local metal core contact. Here, we fabricate and analyze such a geometry using a single Au-Cu2O core-shell nanowire photovoltaic cell as a model system. Spatially resolved photocurrent maps reveal that although the minority carrier diffusion length in the Cu2O shell is less than 1 μm, the radial contact geometry with the incorporated metal electrode still allows for photogenerated carrier collection...

Metal Enhanced Fluorescence (MEF) takes advantage of the coupling between surface plasmons, in either a metallic thin film or metallic nanoparticles, and fluorophores located in proximity of the metal, yielding an increase of the fluorophore emission. While MEF has been widely studied on metallic nanoparticles with the emphasis on creating brighter fluorescent labels, planar surfaces have not benefitted from the same attention. Here we investigate the influence of the surface roughness of a thin metallic film on the fluorescence enhancement. 50nm thick silver films were deposited on glass slides using either thermal evaporation with different evaporation currents or an electroless plating method based on the Tollens reaction to vary the surface roughness. Multiple layers of positively and negatively charged polyelectrolytes were deposited on top of the metallic coating to map out the enhancement factor as function of the gap between the metallic coating and fluorophore molecules covalently bound to the last polyelectrolyte layer. We show that fluorescence is enhanced by the presence of the metallic film, and in particular that the enhancement increases by a factor 3 to 40 for roughness ranging from 3 nm to 8 nm. Although these enhancement factors are modest compared to the enhancement produced by complex metallic nanoparticles or nano-patterned metallic thin films, the thin films used here are capable of supporting a plasmonic wave and offer the possibility of combining different techniques, such as surface plasmon resonance (with its higher refractive index sensitivity compared to localized plasmons) and MEF within a single device. A dip biosensor is realized by depositing metallic nanoparticles onto the tip of a cleaved optical fiber. Light coupled into the fiber interacts with the localized surface plasmons within the nanoparticles at the tip; a portion of the scattered light recouples into the optical fiber and is analyzed by a spectrometer. Characterization of the sensor demonstrates an inverse relationship between the sensitivity and the number of particles deposited onto the surface, with smaller quantities leading to greater sensitivity. The results obtained showed also that by depositing nanoparticles with distinct localized surface plasmon resonance signatures with limited overlap, as for the case of gold and silver nanospheres, a multiplexed dip biosensor can be realized by simply functionalizing the different nanoparticles with different antibodies after the fashion of an immunoassay. In this way different localized surface plasmons resonance bands responsive to different target analytes can be separately monitored, as further presented below, requiring a minimal quantity of reagents both for the functionalization process and for the sample analysis. The simultaneous detection of multiple biological analytes is achieved for the first time using a single optical fiber based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor. This is achieved by collecting the plasmonic wave re-scattered by a rough metallic coating deposited onto two separate sections (sensing regions) of a single multimode optical fiber. The results obtained showed that two gastric cancer biomarkers (apolipoprotein E and clusterin) are detected in clinically relevant concentrations each on a separate sensing region, simultaneously, something that cannot be done in traditional fiber based SPR biosensors that read the transmitted or reflected light to monitor the position of the resonance. While this multiplexing demonstration has been performed with two different biomarkers, it paves the way for the multiplexed detection of a larger number of biomarkers using a simple fiber optic based SPR sensor for point of decision diagnostics. We present four refractometric sensing platforms based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) modulated fluorescence spectra from active microsphere or capillary microresonators and scattered surface plasmon (SP) spectra from rough thin metal coatings and metal nanoparticles in wave guide and fibre dip configurations, respectively. Red-shifts of the detected spectra upon increasing sample refractive index are demonstrated for each platform; label-free bio-sensing is also demonstrated. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Ultrasound is employed to functionalize the surface of porous silicon microparticles at room temperature with unsaturated organic compounds, with no need for heating or for UV treatment.

Novel approaches to sensing based on new optical materials and optical fiber architectures will be presented, including label-free sensors for viruses and biomarkers, dip sensors capable of sensing within nano-liter scale samples and distributed chemical sensors.

A nanostructured porous silicon chip functionalized with dichlorofluorescein is employed as a nanoreactor to respond to Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and to real-time studying redox reactions.

A chitosan/porous silicon biosensing platform for the detection of carboxylic acid-containing drugs in water is prepared and characterized. Parasitic layer-free films of mesoporous silicon are electrochemically etched and functionalized by covalent attachment of chitosan oligomers. The presence of the chitosan species covering the inner and outer surface of the porous silicon films is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption analysis. The obtained hybrid platform offers both an important porosity, with a higher surface area than the original porous silicon substrate, and an important surface charge, very suitable for sensing charged molecules. Ibuprofen is chosen as a drug model for the sensing experiments in water. Optical interferometry measurements are performed on the chitosan/porous silicon substrate exposed to ibuprofen solutions of various concentrations, and compared to the same experiments performed on a nonfunctionalized porous silicon surface. Results of the sensing experiments show that the presence of chitosan increases the sensitivity of the sensing porous film by more than one order of magnitude compared to the nonfunctionalized porous film. Detection in water of BHB, a model molecule for illicit rape drug GHB, is also demonstrated at concentrations compatible with forensic analysis, using the chitosan/porous silicon hybrid platform.

The coupling of optical Bloch surface waves at the truncated end of one dimensional porous silicon photonic crystals is exploited for fast vapour sensing. Self-standing multilayered membranes bound to transparent substrates were fabricated by electrochemical etching and used in an attenuated total reflection configuration to resonantly excite the surface waves and perform real-time sensing.

The high stability of Salonen's thermally carbonized porous silicon (TCPSi) has attracted attention for environmental and biochemical sensing applications, where corrosion-induced zero point drift of porous silicon-based sensor elements has historically been a significant problem. Prepared by the high temperature reaction of porous silicon with acetylene gas, the stability of this silicon carbide-like material also poses a challenge--many sensor applications require a functionalized surface, and the low reactivity of TCPSi has limited the ability to chemically modify its surface. This work presents a simple reaction to modify the surface of TCPSi with an alkyl carboxylate. The method involves radical coupling of a dicarboxylic acid (sebacic acid) to the TCPSi surface using a benzoyl peroxide initiator. The grafted carboxylic acid species provides a route for bioconjugate chemical modification, demonstrated in this work by coupling propylamine to the surface carboxylic acid group through the intermediacy of pentafluorophenol and 1-ethyl-3-[3-dimethylaminopropyl]carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). The stability of the carbonized porous Si surface, both before and after chemical modification, is tested in phosphate buffered saline solution and found to be superior to either hydrosilylated (with undecylenic acid) or thermally oxidized porous Si surfaces.

The synthesis of porous silicon-based photonic structures for bio-sensing applications has been widely investigated in the last years. Thanks to its spongiform structure, porous silicon can efficiently host many organic molecules dispersed in solutions having proper chemical affinity. Fluorescent emission of organic-dyes embedded in porous silicon can be enhanced if a photonic structure like a Fabry–Perot resonator is employed as a host solid matrix. In this work we present experimental evidence of a fluorescence enhancement effect obtained by means of doubly resonant microcavities tuned on both the excitation and the emission wavelengths. The use of doubly resonant cavities allows both a resonant excitation of dyes and a resonant amplification of the emission. We demonstrate that small concentrations of fluorescent dyes down to few picomoles can be detected. The bio-sensing capabilities of such a structure are tested on larger molecules of fluorescein-labelled protein A, yielding to an evident lowering of the detection limit by 2 orders of magnitude.

We describe the use of one-dimensional porous silicon (p-Si) photonic crystals for guiding TE-polarized surface electromagnetic waves (SEWs). Although bulk and interface roughnesses might deteriorate the optical response of photonic structures, we observed reflection spectra presenting narrow (≲6nm) reflectivity anomalies associated with SEWs. In analogy with surface plasmons, SEWs are strongly sensitive to surface modifications. As a proof of principle for a sensor, we provide a direct real-time monitoring of the reversible interactions of organic vapors with the p-Si multilayer. We highlight the higher sensitivity of the SEW-based detection scheme as compared to a method exploiting perturbations of waveguide modes.

International audience; Plasmonic nanoparticles of the highest quality can be obtained via colloidal synthesis at low-cost. Despite the strong potential for integration in nanophotonic devices, the geometry of colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles is mostly limited to that of Platonic solids. This is in stark contrast to nanostructures obtained by top-down methods, that o↵er unlimited capability for plasmon resonance engineering, but present poor material quality and have doubtful perspectives for scalability. Here, we introduce an approach that combines the best of the two worlds by transforming assemblies of single-crystal gold nanocube building blocks into continuous monocrystalline plasmonic nanostructures with an arbitrary shape, via epitaxy in solution at near ambient temperature. We used nanocube dimers as a nanoreactor model system to investigate the mechanism in operando. Measuring the collective optical response of ⇠40 nanocube reactors revealed competitive redox processes of oxidative etchingat the nanocube corners and simultaneous heterogeneous nucleation at their surface, that ensure the filling of the sub-nanometer gap in a self-limited manner. Tuning the experimental parameters (temperature, pH, halide concentration) proved e↵ective in controlling the morphology of the resulting monocrystalline nanostructures from (100) to (111) capping facets. Applying this procedure to nanocube arrays assembled in a patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate, we are able to obtain printable monocrystalline nanoantenna arrays that can be swiftly integrated in devices.
