The organic salt (S)-nicotinium 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate undergoes reversible single crystal to single crystal phase transition at 104 K. The phase transition was monitored using temperature dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction and was attributed to symmetry breaking translations and rotations of the crystal components. The concept of syncrystallization was reinvestigated by focusing on phthalic acid (PA) grown with methyl red (MR). No evidence was found for the simultaneous crystallization of MR and PA, showing that the MR reorientation on heating as well as the separation and recrystallization of MR-rich phase are distinct processes that could be embraced by the literal meaning of syncrystallization.

A series of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores incorporating the ferrocenyl (F) group as an electron donor and 2-dicyanomethylene-3-cyano-4-methyl 1-2,5-dihydrofuran (TCF) derivatives as electron acceptors is discussed. The excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental beta values demonstrates that a linear relation exists between the hyperpolarizability and the bond length alteration.

Addition of amine nucleophiles to acetonitrile solutions of the Os (super IV) anilido complex TpOs (NHPh) Cl (sub 2) (1) gives products with derivatized anilido ligands. Kinetic studies indicate an addition-elimination mechanism involving initial attack of the amine nucleophile on the anilido ligand.

Research has been conducted on the heteronuclear diethylcarbamato complexes. The preparation of these complexes from the isostructural homonuclear precursors carried out via the use of solvothermal methodology is described.

Careful control of the temperature and duration of the reaction between titanium tert-butoxide and acetic acid has led to the formation of new polyoxotitanate clusters with 14, 18, and 28 Ti atoms. UV/vis spectroscopy on the [Ti.sub.28] cluster has shown that the optical band gap is blue-shifted with respect to a cluster containing only 17 titanium atoms displaying that the optical properties are heavily affected by the internal structure of the particle than its size.

The crystalline nanocluster phase is described in which nanoscale metal oxide clusters are self-assembled in three-dimensional periodic arrays. The studies have shown a moderate dependence of the catecholate net charge on the geometry of adsorption and all of the catechol-functionalized clusters have a deep-red color due to penetration of the highest occupied catechol levels into the band gap of the Ti/O particles.

The angular dependence of linear dichroism (LD) in an anisotropic medium is evaluated by determining how the optical indicatrix constrains the vibrations of the electric field. Spherulites have obviated the substantial complexities that are engendered in non-normal incidence by sample reorientation and hence the principles of anisotropic absorption are given in an intuitive fashion.

A series of molecular engineered organic glasses were synthesized based on the reversible self-assembly of aromatic/perfluoroaromatic Ar-[Ar.sup.F] dendron-substituted nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores. These compounds improve poling efficiency and with their binary chormophore composites, they show enhanced electro-optic activities.

A rare example of the functional metalloenzyme active site model, superoxide reductase (SOR) that reduces [O.sub.2.sup.-] via a trans thiolate ligated Fe(III)-peroxo intermediate is described. The trans thiolate is shown to lower the redox potential, change the spin-state and weaken the Fe-O bond favoring [O.sub.2.sup.-] reduction and [H.sub.2][O.sub.2] release.

The formation of large chiral fields of centrosymmetric crystallites that emanate from a phthalic acid (PA) nucleus is shown with a newly constructed square-wave, mechanically modulated, circular-extinction imaging microscope (CEIM). The chiroptical properties have informed the growth mechanisms of structured polycrystalline mesoscale aggregates and have described a general mechanism for the local amplification of chirality through dendritic growth.
