Search

It is widely accepted that the next lepton collider beyond a Higgs factory would require center-of-mass energy of the order of up to 15 TeV. Since, given reasonable space and cost restrictions, conventional accelerator technology reaches its limits near this energy, high-gradient advanced acceleration concepts are attractive. Advanced and novel accelerators (ANAs) are leading candidates due to their ability to produce acceleration gradients on the order of 1-100 GV/m, leading to compact acceleration facilities. However, intermediate energy facilities (IEF) are required to test the critical technology elements on the way towards multi-TeV-class collliders. Here a science case for a 20-100 GeV center-of-mass energy ANA-based lepton collider that can be a candidate for an intermediate energy facility is presented. The IEF can provide numerous opportunities for high energy physics studies including precision Quantum Chromodynamics and Beyond the Standard Model physics measurements, investigation of charged particle interactions with extreme electromagnetic fields, and exploring muon and proton beam acceleration. Possible applications of this collider include the studies of γγ and electron beam-fixed target/beamdump collider designs. Thus, the goal of the proposed IEF is to both carry out particle physics measurements in the 20-100 GeV ranges as well as to serve as an ANA demonstrator facility.

Preserving the quality of a positron beam in a plasma-based accelerator, where a wakefield suitable for positron transport and acceleration is generated by means of an electron filament, is challenging. This is due to the nature of the wakefields, characterized by focusing fields that vary nonlinearly in the transverse direction, and by accelerating fields that are non-uniform. These fields also change slice-by-slice along the beam. Maintaining a high beam quality is pivotal for application of positron beams in a plasma-based collider. In this paper, we show that an initial background plasma temperature can help mitigate the positron beam quality degradation in plasma-based accelerators that rely on electron filaments. We show that temperature effects broaden the electron filament and smooth radially both the non-linear transverse and the non-uniform longitudinal wakefields. Using warm plasmas opens up new possibilities to improve beam quality in several plasma-based positron acceleration concepts.

Abstract: The petawatt (PW) laser facility of the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center has recently commissioned its second laser pulse transport line. This new beamline can be operated in parallel with the first beamline and enables strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) experiments at BELLA. In this paper, we present an overview of the upgraded BELLA PW facility with a SF-QED experimental layout in which intense laser pulses collide with GeV-class laser-wakefield-accelerated electron beams. We present simulation results showing that experiments will allow the study of laser-particle interactions from the classical to the SF-QED regime with a nonlinear quantum parameter of up to χ∼ 2. In addition, we show that experiments will enable the study and production of GeV-class, mrad-divergence positron beams via the Breit–Wheeler process. Plasma accelerators sustain extreme field gradients and potentially enable future compact linear colliders. Although tremendous progress has been achieved in accelerating electron beams in a plasma accelerator, positron acceleration with collider-relevant parameters is challenging. A recently proposed positron acceleration scheme relying on the wake generated by an electron drive beam in a plasma column has been shown to be able to accelerate positron witness beams with low emittance and low energy spread. However, since this scheme relies on cylindrical symmetry, it is possibly prone to transverse instabilities that could lead, ultimately, to beam breakup. In this article, we show that the witness beam itself is subject to various damping mechanisms and, therefore, this positron acceleration scheme is inherently stable toward the misalignment of the drive and witness beams. This enables stable, high-quality plasma-based positron acceleration.

Modeling plasma accelerators is a computationally challenging task and the quasi-static particle-in-cell algorithm is a method of choice in a wide range of situations. In this work, we present the first performance-portable, quasi-static, three-dimensional particle-in-cell code HiPACE++. By decomposing all the computation of a 3D domain in successive 2D transverse operations and choosing appropriate memory management, HiPACE++ demonstrates orders-of-magnitude speedups on modern scientific GPUs over CPU-only implementations. The 2D transverse operations are performed on a single GPU, avoiding time-consuming communications. The longitudinal parallelization is done through temporal domain decomposition, enabling near-optimal strong scaling from 1 to 512 GPUs. HiPACE++ is a modular, open-source code enabling efficient modeling of plasma accelerators from laptops to state-of-the-art supercomputers. In this paper we discuss design considerations and beam dynamics challenges associated with laser-driven plasma-based accelerators as applied to multi-TeV-scale linear colliders. Plasma accelerators provide ultra-high gradients and ultra-short bunches, offering the potential for compact linacs and reduced power requirements. We show that stable, efficient acceleration with beam quality preservation is possible in the nonlinear bubble regime of laser-plasma accelerators using beam shaping. Ion motion, naturally occuring for dense beams (i.e., low emittance and high energy) severely damps transverse beam instabilities. Coulomb scattering by the background ions is considered and it is shown that the strong focusing in the plasma strongly suppresses scattering-induced emittance growth. Betatron radiation emission from the transverse motion of the beam in the plasma will result in beam power loss and energy spread growth; however for sub-100 nm emittances, the beam power loss and energy spread growth will be sub-percent for multi-TeV-class plasma linacs.

The stability of plasma-based accelerators against transverse misalignments and asymmetries of the drive beam is crucial for their applicability. Without stabilizing mechanisms, even small initial offsets of the drive beam centroid can couple coherently to the plasma wake, grow, and ultimately lead to emittance degradation or beam loss for a trailing witness beam. In this work, we demonstrate the intrinsic stability of a beam propagating in a plasma column. This result is relevant in the context of plasma-based positron acceleration, where a wakefield suitable for the transport and acceleration of a positron witness beam is generated in a plasma column by means of an electron drive beam. The stable propagation of the drive beam is a necessary condition for the experimental implementation of this scheme. The differences and similarities of stabilizing mechanisms in a plasma column compared to a homogeneous plasma are identified via theory and particle-in-cell simulations. Experimental tolerances are given, demonstrating the experimental feasibility of the scheme.

It has been demonstrated experimentally that laser plasma accelerators can produce multi-100 MeV electron bunches with a few percent energy spread, and from these electrons, multi-MeV quasi-monoenergetic photons have been demonstrated based on Compton up-scattering from a counter-propagating laser. This offers the potential of a high-quality, narrow-bandwidth, compact, photon source with broad application. The bandwidth of the resulting photons depends directly on the distribution of the electron bunch and is limited, in particular, by the bunch divergence (i.e., the spread in transverse velocity angle). At the same time, the ability to decelerate electrons after scattering is important to source deployment. We describe a series of plasma structures that expand and then collimate the electron bunch, reducing its divergence and thus reducing the bandwidth of the scattered photons while enabling both high performance scattering and deceleration. These plasma structures are demonstrated in simulations of the accelerator system, showing the potential to reach few-percent photon spread which is important for applications using nuclear resonance fluorescence.

We describe the development and operation of a regenerative, cryogenically-formed discharge waveguide formed by freezing nitrous oxide gas onto the inner wall of a sapphire capillary. We demonstrate a technique for varying the channel diameter in situ and present guiding of low-power laser pulses through 6-cm long waveguides with channel diameters of 0.7, 0.8, and 1 mm. Measurements and simulations of the output laser fluence showed that the matched spot size could be adjusted with the thickness of the solid nitrous oxide layer.

Reliable modeling of laser-plasma accelerators, where a short and intense laser pulse propagates in an underdense plasma over long distances, is a computationally challenging task. This is due to the great disparity among the scales involved in the modeling, ranging from the micrometer scale of the laser wavelength to, for instance, the meter scale of the laser-plasma interaction length for a multi-GeV-class laser-plasma accelerator. To reduce such imbalance, the time-averaged ponderomotive approximation may be used, where the plasma particle dynamics is analytically averaged over the laser frequency, and only spatiotemporal scales associated with the laser envelope are retained in the calculations, resulting in significant computational savings. In this paper, we characterize the accuracy and robustness of the time-averaged ponderomotive approximation for a range of laser parameters of interest for present and future laser-plasma accelerators, and we show that the error introduced by the averaging process is small in all relevant cases.

Witness beam stability and preservation of its ultra-low emittance have been identified as critical challenges toward realizing a TeV-class, plasma-based linear collider. In fact, the witness bunch parameters required by a future TeV-class collider have been expected to trigger hosing instability and background ion motion, leading to emittance degradation and, potentially, to bunch loss. Recently, it has been shown that ion motion suppresses the hosing instability, and proper longitudinal bunch shaping can eliminate the ion-motion-induced emittance growth. In this paper, we propose and analyze a plasma-based method to generate the shaped bunches that enable emittance preservation in the presence of ion motion. The method is based on an adiabatic matching procedure, where a bunch with an initially untapered profile is injected in the plasma accelerator stage with an energy low enough that ion motion effects are initially small. As the bunch accelerates, it is adiabatically compressed, ion motion is gradually triggered, and the bunch slowly but continuously readjusts itself in the ion motion-perturbed wakefield acquiring the desired taper. The production of tapered witness bunch profiles that minimize energy spread and preserve emittance for collider-relevant parameters could enable the use of plasma-based accelerators for high-energy physics applications.

Dissipative capillary discharges form plasma channels which allow for high power laser guiding, enabling efficient electron acceleration in a laser wakefield accelerator. However, at the low plasma densities required to produce high-energy electrons, in order to avoid capillary wall damage, high power lasers need a tighter transverse confinement that cannot be achieved by the capillary discharge powered by Ohmic heating alone. The introduction of an additional laser for heating of the plasma leads to deeper and narrower plasma channels. Here we investigate the formation of laser-heated axially uniform plasma channels. We show that a high degree of longitudinal uniformity can be achieved despite significant evolution of the heater laser during its propagation through the channel.

We measured the parameter reproducibility and radial electron density profile of capillary discharge waveguides with diameters of 650 to 2 mm and lengths of 9 to 40 cm. To the best of the authors' knowledge, 40 cm is the longest discharge capillary plasma waveguide to date. This length is important for 10 GeV electron energy gain in a single laser-driven plasma wakefield acceleration stage. Acceleration of positron beams in plasma-based accelerators is a highly challenging task. To realize a plasma-based linear collider, acceleration of a positron bunch with high-efficiency is required, while maintaining both a low emittance and a subpercent-level energy spread. Recently, a plasma-based positron acceleration scheme was proposed in which a wake suitable for the acceleration and transport of positrons is produced in a plasma column by means of an electron drive beam [Diederichs et al., Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 22, 081301 (2019)PRABCJ2469-988810.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.22.081301]. In this article, we present a study of beam loading for a positron beam in this type of wake. We demonstrate via particle-in-cell simulations that acceleration of high-quality positron beams is possible, and we discuss a possible path to achieve collider-relevant parameters.

Laser-heated capillary discharge waveguides are novel, low plasma density guiding structures able to guide intense laser pulses over many diffraction lengths and have recently enabled the acceleration of electrons to 7.8 GeV by using a laser-plasma accelerator (LPA). These devices represent an improvement over conventional capillary discharge waveguides, as the channel matched spot size and plasma density can be tuned independently of the capillary radius. This has allowed the guiding of petawatt-scale pulses focused to small spot sizes within large diameter capillaries, preventing laser damage of the capillary structure. High performance channel-guided LPAs require control of matched spot size and density, which experiments and simulations reported here show can be tuned over a wide range via initial discharge and laser parameters. In this paper, measurements of the matched spot size and plasma density in laser-heated capillary discharges are presented, which are found to be in excellent agreement with simulations performed using the MHD code MARPLE. Strategies for optimizing accelerator performance are identified based on these results.

A plasma channel created by the combination of a capillary discharge and inverse Bremsstrahlung laser heating enabled the generation of electron bunches with energy up to 7.8 GeV in a laser-driven plasma accelerator. The capillary discharge created an initial plasma channel and was used to tune the plasma temperature, which optimized laser heating. Although optimized colder initial plasma temperatures reduced the ionization degree, subsequent ionization from the heater pulse created a fully ionized plasma on-axis. The heater pulse duration was chosen to be longer than the hydrodynamic timescale of ≈ 1 ns, such that later temporal slices were more efficiently guided by the channel created by the front of the pulse. Simulations are presented which show that this thermal self-guiding of the heater pulse enabled channel formation over 20 cm. The post-heated channel had lower on-axis density and increased focusing strength compared to relying on the discharge alone, which allowed for guiding of relativistically intense laser pulses with a peak power of 0.85 PW and wakefield acceleration over 15 diffraction lengths. Electrons were injected into the wake in multiple buckets and times, leading to several electron bunches with different peak energies. To create single electron bunches with low energy spread, experiments using localized ionization injection inside a capillary discharge waveguide were performed. A single injected bunch with energy 1.6 GeV, charge 38 pC, divergence 1 mrad, and relative energy spread below 2% full-width half-maximum was produced in a 3.3 cm-long capillary discharge waveguide. This development shows promise for mitigation of energy spread and future high efficiency staged acceleration experiments.

The principle of chromatic matching, i.e., using two laser modes of different geometric mode numbers and different colors so that they copropagate at the same group velocity, is proposed in order to realize the plasma undulator concept. Chromatic matching allows one to overcome group velocity slippage, whereby lower-order modes outrun higher-order ones, allowing for extended interaction lengths. The dephasing limit can be mitigated by using a special tapering of the plasma channel such that the electron bunch propagates in phase with the laser mode in addition to maintaining a constant undulator frequency. Furthermore, controlled dephasing is proposed as a means to induce chirp in the generated X-ray spectrum.

A finite radius plasma is proposed to generate wakefields that can focus and accelerate positron beams in a plasma wakefield accelerator. The finite radius plasma reduces the restoring force acting on the plasma electrons forming the plasma wakefield, resulting in an elongation of the on-axis return point of the electrons and, hence, creating a long, high-density electron filament. This results in a region with accelerating and focusing fields for positrons, allowing for the acceleration and quality-preserving transport of high-charge positron beams.

Beam degradation is examined in a laser-plasma accelerator stage with a parabolic plasma channel when the laser pulse and/or the electron beam enters the channel off axis. Betatron oscillations in the beam become incoherent, resulting in a net increase of beam emittance through phase mixing. A quantitative model for transverse emittance growth due to misalignment in multistage accelerators, valid in the linear regime, is presented and compared with particle-in-cell simulations. The model is applied to a chain of laser-plasma accelerator stages, and tolerances are derived on the initial energy spread of the electron beam and misalignment in the multistage structure, with repercussions in high-energy physics applications of laser-plasma accelerators.

Guiding of relativistically intense laser pulses with peak power of 0.85 PW over 15 diffraction lengths was demonstrated by increasing the focusing strength of a capillary discharge waveguide using laser inverse bremsstrahlung heating. This allowed for the production of electron beams with quasimonoenergetic peaks up to 7.8 GeV, double the energy that was previously demonstrated. Charge was 5 pC at 7.8 GeV and up to 62 pC in 6 GeV peaks, and typical beam divergence was 0.2 mrad.

The use of higher-order modes is proposed to control the transverse wakefield structure generated by a laser pulse propagating through a plasma channel. This can be done in the quasilinear regime in both the Laguerre-Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian bases for appropriate laser-plasma parameters, independent of the longitudinal field. Control of the wake can be achieved by using modes of different mode numbers but with matched phase velocities to generate tunable, matched laser propagation. The wake can be tuned by modifying the initial phase and amplitude of each mode. In addition, it is shown that two different higher order modes can propagate at the same group velocity by appropriately tuning the frequencies. Geometric and frequency tuning of the laser driver allows for greater control of the transverse phase-space of the accelerated electron bunch.

Mitigation of the beam hose instability in plasma-based accelerators is required for the realization of many applications, including plasma-based colliders. The hose instability is analyzed in the blowout regime including plasma ion motion, and ion motion is shown to suppress the hose instability by inducing a head-to-tail variation in the focusing force experienced by the beam. Hence, stable acceleration in plasma-based accelerators is possible, while, by use of proper bunch shaping, minimizing the energy spread and preserving the transverse beam emittance.

Two-color laser ionization injection is a method to generate ultra-low emittance (sub-100 nm transverse normalized emittance) beams in a laser-driven plasma accelerator. A plasma beatwave accelerator is proposed to drive the plasma wave for ionization injection, where the beating of the lasers effectively produces a train of long-wavelength pulses. The plasma beatwave accelerator excites a large amplitude plasma wave with low peak laser electric fields, leaving atomically-bound electrons with low ionization potential. A short-wavelength, low-amplitude ionization injection laser pulse (with a small ponderomotive force and large peak electric field) is used to ionize the remaining bound electrons at a wake phase suitable for trapping, generating an ultra-low emittance electron beam that is accelerated in the plasma wave. Using a plasma beatwave accelerator for wakefield excitation, compared to short-pulse wakefield excitation, allows for a lower amplitude injection laser pulse and, hence, a lower emittance beam may be generated.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are important regulators of oocyte maturation, playing a key role in modulating gene expression both in a temporal- and spatial-specific manner. These small non-coding RNAs are involved in important processes during oocyte maturation, acting as messengers between the oocyte and its surrounding cumulus cells. Despite its significance, the bidirectional communication mechanism is still unknown. To test miRNA communication between oocyte and surrounding cumulus cells through the gap junctions the gap junctions were either blocked with carbenoxolone or not. MiRNA sequencing of oocytes at 1, 6, and 22 h of in vitro maturation was then performed. Among the differentially expressed miRNAs, bta-miR-21-5p, a regulator of cumulus cell viability and oocyte maturation, was the only previously known miRNA. Furthermore, by labeling a bta-miR-21-5p mimic with FAM, crossing of this miRNA through the gap junctions within the cumulus-oocyte complex could be visualized and internalization in the oocyte was confirmed by RT-qPCR. In conclusion, this study provides, for the first time, evidence that miRNA communication within the bovine cumulus-oocyte complex is enabled through the gap junctional network. Electrically discharged active plasma lenses (APLs) are actively pursued in compact high-brightness plasma-based accelerators due to their high-gradient, tunable, and radially symmetric focusing properties. In this manuscript, the APL is experimentally compared with a conventional quadrupole triplet, highlighting the favorable reduction in the energy dependence (chromaticity) in the transport line. Through transport simulations, it is explored how the non-uniform radial discharge current distribution leads to beam-integrated emittance degradation and a charge density reduction at focus. However, positioning an aperture at the APL entrance will significantly reduce emittance degradation without additional loss of charge in the high-quality core of the beam. An analytical model is presented that estimates the emittance degradation from a short beam driving a longitudinally varying wakefield in the APL. Optimizing laser plasma accelerator operation is discussed where emittance degradation from the non-uniform discharge current (favoring small beams inside the APL) and wakefield effects (favoring larger beam sizes) is minimized.

Hosing is a major challenge for the applicability of plasma wakefield accelerators and its modeling is therefore of fundamental importance to facilitate future stable and compact plasma-based particle accelerators. In this contribution, we present a new model for the evolution of the plasma centroid, which enables the accurate investigation of the hose instability in the nonlinear blowout regime. It paves the road for more precise and comprehensive studies of hosing, e.g., with drive and witness beams, which were not possible with previous models.

Laser plasma accelerators (LPA) offer an exciting possibility to deliver high energy, high brightness electrons beams in drastically smaller distance scales than is typical for conventional accelerators. As such, LPAs draw considerable attention as potential drivers for next generation light sources and for a compact linear collider. In order to asses the viability of an LPA source for a particular application, the brightness of the source should be properly characterized. In this paper, we present charge dependent transverse emittance measurements of LPA sources using both ionization injection and shock induced density down ramp injection, with the latter delivering smaller transverse emittances by a factor of two when controlling for charge density. The single shot emittance method is described in detail with a discussion on limitations related to second order transport effects. The direct role of space charge is explored through a series of simulations and found to be consistent with experimental observations.

Detailed and reliable numerical modeling of laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs), where a short and intense laser pulse interacts with an underdense plasma over distances of up to a meter, is a formidably challenging task. This is due to the great disparity among the length scales involved in the modeling, ranging from the micron scale of the laser wavelength to the meter scale of the total laser-plasma interaction length. The use of the time-averaged ponderomotive force approximation, where the laser pulse is described by means of its envelope, enables efficient modeling of LPAs by removing the need to model the details of electron motion at the laser wavelength scale. Furthermore, it allows simulations in cylindrical geometry which captures relevant 3D physics at 2D computational cost. A key element of any code based on the time-averaged ponderomotive force approximation is the laser envelope solver. In this paper we present the accurate and efficient envelope solver used in the code INF&RNO (INtegrated Fluid & paRticle simulatioN cOde). The features of the INF&RNO laser solver enable an accurate description of the laser pulse evolution deep into depletion even at a reasonably low resolution, resulting in significant computational speed-ups.

Plasma structures based on leaky channels are proposed to filter higher-order laser mode content. The evolution and propagation of non-Gaussian laser pulses in leaky channels are studied, and it is shown that, for appropriate laser-plasma parameters, the higher-order laser mode content of the pulse may be removed while the fundamental mode remains well-guided. The behavior of multi-mode laser pulses is described analytically and numerically using envelope equations, including the derivation of the leakage coefficients, and compared to particle-in-cell simulations. Laser pulse propagation, with reduced higher-order mode content, improves guiding in parabolic plasma channels, enabling extended interaction lengths for laser-plasma accelerator applications.

In a plasma-accelerator-based linear collider, the density of matched, low-emittance, high-energy particle bunches required for collider applications can be orders of magnitude above the background ion density, leading to ion motion, perturbation of the focusing fields, and, hence, to beam emittance growth. By analyzing the response of the background ions to an ultrahigh density beam, analytical expressions, valid for nonrelativistic ion motion, are derived for the transverse wakefield and for the final (i.e., after saturation) bunch emittance. Analytical results are validated against numerical modeling. Initial beam distributions are derived that are equilibrium solutions, which require head-to-tail bunch shaping, enabling emittance preservation with ion motion.
