This study seeks to critically examine perceptions of urban school climate from a predominantly white teacher workforce and discuss the role that white identity, as the Dominant culture, plays in maintaining the status quo of racialized school climate. Participants included 145 teachers from a large southwestern urban setting. Teachers' perceptions were measured by the Teacher Perceptions of Urban School Climate survey that includes six dimensions that are important aspects of urban school climate: (1) Leadership, Relationality, and Care, (2) Perceptions of Security and Safety, (3) Student Belonging, (4) Constructivist Teacher Practice, (5) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and (6) Educator Retention. Results indicate that elementary school teachers had more positive perceptions of urban school climate and beginning teachers were less positive about aspects of urban school climate. Implications stemming from the results are discussed including the role whiteness and racism play in teacher perceptions of urban school climate and teacher education.

In virtual reality (VR), we assessed how untrained participants searched for fire sources with the digital twin of a novel augmented reality (AR) device: a firefighter’s helmet equipped with a heat sensor and an integrated display indicating the heat distribution in its field of view. This was compared to the digital twin of a current state-of-the-art device, a handheld thermal imaging camera. The study had three aims: (i) compare the novel device to the current standard, (ii) demonstrate the usefulness of VR for developing AR devices, (iii) investigate visual search in a complex, realistic task free of visual context. Users detected fire sources faster with the thermal camera than with the helmet display. Responses in target-present trials were faster than in target-absent trials for both devices. Fire localization after detection was numerically faster and more accurate, in particular in the horizontal plane, for the helmet display than for the thermal camera. Search was strongly biased to start on the left-hand side of each room, reminiscent of pseudoneglect in scene viewing. Our study exemplifies how VR can be used to study vision in realistic settings, to foster the development of AR devices, and to obtain results relevant to basic science and applications alike.

Blant annet kartlegger den ulike reguleringsformer for kommunal bolig, som grunnlag for drøftelsen. Med utgangspunkt i husleieloven og vilkårslæren, samt delvis menneskerettslige og konstitusjonelle rammer, søker artikkelen å klarlegge kommunenes handlingsrom. Artikkelen konkluderer med at deler av kommunenes praksis knyttet til vilkårsstillelse ikke er lovlig.

Abnormal gene dosage from copy number variants has been associated with susceptibility to autoimmune disease. This includes 18p deletion syndrome, a chromosomal disorder with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 50,000 characterized by intellectual disability, facial dysmorphology, and brain abnormalities. The underlying causes for autoimmune manifestations associated with 18p deletions, however, remain unknown. Our objective was to investigate a distinctive case involving monozygotic triplets concordant for developmental delay, white matter abnormalities, and autoimmunity, specifically juvenile-onset Graves’ thyroiditis. By chromosomal microarray analysis and whole genome sequencing, we found the triplets to carry a de novo interstitial 5.9 Mb deletion of chromosome 18p11.31p11.21 spanning 19 protein-coding genes. We conducted a literature review to pinpoint genes affected by the deletion that could be associated with immune dysregulation and identified PTPRM as a potential candidate. Through dephosphorylation, PTPRM serves as a negative regulator of STAT3, a key factor in the generation of Th17 cells and the onset of specific autoimmune manifestations. We hypothesized that PTPRM hemizygosity results in increased STAT3 activation. We therefore performed assays investigating PTPRM expression, STAT3 phosphorylation, Th1/Th2/Th17 cell fractions, Treg cells, and overall immunophenotype, and in support of the hypothesis, our investigations showed an increase in cells with phosphorylated STAT3 and higher levels of Th17 cells in the triplets. We propose that PTPRM hemizygosity can serve as a contributing factor to autoimmune susceptibility in 18p deletion syndrome. If confirmed in unrelated 18p/PTPRM deletion patients, this susceptibility could potentially be treated by targeted inhibition of IL-17.

Satellite remote sensing enables monitoring of regenerative agriculture practices, such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and conservation tillage to allow tracking and quantification at unprecedented scales. The Monitor system presented here capitalizes on the scope and scale of these data by integrating crop identification, cover cropping, and tillage intensity estimations annually at field scales across the contiguous United States (CONUS) from 2014 to 2023. The results provide the first ever mapping of these practices at this temporal fidelity and spatial scale, unlocking valuable insights for sustainable agricultural management. Monitor incorporates three datasets: CropID, a deep learning transformer model using Sentinel-2 and USDA Cropland Data Layer (CDL) data from 2018 to 2023 to predict annual crop types; the living root data, which use Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data to determine cover crop presence through regional parameterization; and residue cover (RC) data, which uses the Normalized Difference Tillage Index (NDTI) and crop residue cover (CRC) index to assess tillage intensity. The system calculates field-scale statistics and integrates these components to compile a comprehensive field management history. Results are validated with 35,184 ground-truth data points from 19 U.S. states, showing an overall accuracy of 80% for crop identification, 78% for cover crop detection, and 63% for tillage intensity. Also, comparisons with USDA NASS Ag Census data indicate that cover crop adoption rates were within 20% of estimates for 90% of states in 2017 and 81% in 2022, while for conventional tillage, 52% and 25% of states were within 20% of estimates, increasing to 75% and 67% for conservation tillage. Monitor provides a comprehensive view of regenerative practices by crop season for all of CONUS across a decade, supporting decision-making for sustainable agricultural management including associated outcomes such as reductions in emissions, long term yield resiliency, and supply chain stability.

The use of information and communication technologies while working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased flexibility and compatibility of different life domains, but may have also increased work intensification – which in turn may jeopardize wellbeing and task performance. While work intensification is assumed to relate positively to procrastination as well as irritation, the extent of work from home was expected to strengthen these relationships. Social support may attenuate these moderations. The assumptions were tested in two independent, comparable samples (S1, N = 347; S2, N = 1,066) during two stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (November 2020, 2021). Data were collected via online questionnaires using established scales (preregistered before analyses). Work intensification was significantly positively related to procrastination as well as cognitive and affective irritation in both samples. The extent of work from home strengthened the relationship between work intensification and procrastination (S2), while in S1 this held true only when persons reported not having their own study at home. Social support did not moderate the moderations. By replicating results in two different samples, this study contributes by being the first to examine the relationship between work intensification and procrastination, while further confirming the positive relationship between work intensification and irritation. The extent of work from home seems to pose an additional risk for procrastination. Our research extends the research on remote work by showing the downsides, such as work intensification, which is positively related to irritation and procrastination, which are precursors to impaired wellbeing and task performance. This highlights the different negative outcomes that can result from non-ideal working conditions when working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Especially given that the pandemic paved the way for a high prevalence of work from home, future research should investigate beneficial contextual factors to provide the evidence base for the design of healthy and productive working conditions.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the field of permanent magnet biased inductors, (PMBIs). The theoretical benefits of PMBIs, operating in DC applications, were identified decades ago, in the late 1950’s. Compared with a non-biased inductor, a 100% linear biased PMBI, can achieve the same inductance and saturation current, while requiring only half of the core's cross-sectional area or half the number of turns. In practicality, achieving 100% biasing without introducing additional losses, or detrimental conditions for the permanent magnet's lifetime, becomes an important challenge and the development and achievements of PMBIs have been evolving until present days. Therefore, this overview paper, first introduces the basic background knowledge required for the development of PMBIs, including an overview of the design benefits of biasing, the possible design strategies, additional benefits and possibilities of over-biasing, and a brief introduction to permanent magnets, PMs. The historical evolution of the different biasing techniques, and the employed core and PM topologies, are analyzed and evaluated. The different physical prototype implementations found in the literature, and their operating characteristics, achievements, and limitations, are compiled and evaluated. Finally, the present challenges of PMBI implementation, and the future perspectives towards optimized development are summarized.

Abstract DNA methylation is important for gene expression and alterations in DNA methylation are involved in the development and progression of cancer and other major diseases. Analysis of DNA methylation patterns has until now been dependent on either a chemical or an enzymatic pre-treatment, which are both time consuming procedures and potentially biased due to incomplete treatment. We present a qPCR technology, EpiDirect®, that allows for direct PCR quantification of DNA methylations using untreated DNA. EpiDirect® is based on the ability of Intercalating Nucleic Acids (INA®) to differentiate between methylated and unmethylated cytosines in a special primer design. With this technology, we develop an assay to analyze the methylation status of a region of the MGMT promoter used in treatment selection and prognosis of glioblastoma patients. We compare the assay to two bisulfite-relying, methyl-specific PCR assays in a study involving 42 brain tumor FFPE samples, revealing high sensitivity, specificity, and the clinical utility of the method.

De videregående uddannelser er blevet kritiseret for kun at fokusere på uddannelse og forskning, og der er rejst krav om en Third Mission (TM): at læreanstalterne også ’bidrager til samfundet’ (Compagnucci & Spigarelli, 2020). Men hvordan vurdere TM-kvalitet? Akkreditering ser udelukkende efter kvantitativ compliance mellem indsats og effekt (Bendixen & Jacobsen, 2017; 2019; 2022). Vi vil undersøge, hvordan den kommende læreruddannelses TM kan kvalitetsbedømmes ud fra mere dynamiske kvalitetskriterier, som vi efter Pinheiro et al. (2017) har valgt at kalde for en uddannelses samfundsresonans. I denne artikel vil vi (a) gennemføre en historisk dokumentanalyse af, hvorvidt den aktuelle institutionsakkreditering 2.0 indfanger ovennævnte TM-kvaliteter, (b) beskrive TM i den ny læreruddannelse ud fra Bekendtgørelsen (BEK 374, 2023) og (c) give eksempler på, hvordan man løbende kan kvalitetsbedømme TM i den kommende læreruddannelse. Til gavn for uddannelse og aftagerfelt.

Objective To review patient-report/caregiver-report measures of rehabilitation service use following acquired brain injury (ABI).Data sources Medline, APA PsycINFO, Embase and CINAHL were searched on November 2021 and November 2022. Authors were contacted if measures were not included in manuscripts/appendices.Study selection Included articles were empirical research or a research protocol, available in English and described measures of patient report/caregiver report of rehabilitation service use post-ABI via quantitative or qualitative methods. Two reviewers independently screened 5290 records using DistillerSR. Discrepancies were resolved by team adjudication.Data extraction Data extraction was piloted with high levels of agreement (k=.94). Data were extracted by a single member with team meetings to seek guidance as needed. Data included administration characteristics (reporter, mode of administration, recall period), psychometric evidence and dimensions assessed (types of services, setting, frequency, duration, intensity, qualitative aspects).Data synthesis One hundred and fifty-two measures were identified from 85 quantitative, 56 qualitative and 3 psychometric studies. Psychometric properties were reported for four measures, all of which focused on satisfaction. Most measures inquired about the type of rehabilitation services used, with more than half assessing functional (eg, physical therapy) and behavioural health rehabilitation services, but fewer than half assessing community and academic reintegration (eg, special education, vocational rehabilitation) or cognitive (eg, neuropsychology) services. Fewer than half assessed qualitative aspects (eg, satisfaction). Recall periods ranged from 1 month to ‘since the ABI event’ or focused on current use. Of measures that could be accessed (n=71), many included a limited checklist of types of services used. Very few measures assessed setting, frequency, intensity or duration.Conclusions Despite widespread interest, the vast majority of measures have not been validated and are limited in scope. Use of gold-standard psychometric methods to develop and validate a comprehensive patient-report/caregiver-report measure of rehabilitation service use would have wide-ranging implications for improving rehabilitation research in ABI.

Introduction The use of routine postoperative chest drains after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) of the lung is a practice based on tradition with the aim of draining fluid and air. However, new evidence suggests that chest drains can be avoided in selected cases. With this randomised controlled trial, we wish to establish the efficacy and safety of avoiding postoperative chest drains compared with routine postoperative chest drains.Methods and analysis This is a two-centre randomised controlled trial without allocation concealment, but where randomisation occurs after the end of procedure leaving operative personnel blinded during surgery. The sample size is calculated to show a difference in pain measurements using the Numeric Rating Scale under different circumstances and at different time points to show superiority of the intervention. The trial is pragmatic by design to reflect the daily clinical scenario and with the aim of increasing the external validity of the results.Ethics and dissemination Approval by the local ethics committees has been obtained for both sites. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05358158) prior to inclusion. The results of the trial will be disseminated by publication in an international journal and presentation at major international thoracic surgical meetings.Article summary This is a randomised controlled trial estimating the effects of avoiding a chest drain after VATS wedge resection of the lung on pain, total morphine use, quality of life and complications.Trial registration number NCT05358158.
