In this paper, we handle the issue of imprecision in evaluating the performance of the systems using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN). The basic probabilities generally considered in this type of nets are replaced by an interval-valued probability. This allows analysts to express their uncertainties related to the parameters of the different elements of the system and to assess the effect of this uncertainty on industrial system unavailability. Results obtained from varying the unavailability give some insights into the performance of the studied system. It is demonstrated how the imprecision led to important changes in the performance of the system. The used approach combines Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN) and interval method to validate the obtained results obtained applied in safety systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cultivation of carob tree does not need many climatic and ecological requirements. The main limit to its large-scale cultivation is the defects for propagation with seeds. Addressing this, our study evaluated the effect of cold plasma pretreatment on carob seed germination. Impressively, cold plasma showcased beneficial effects by significantly increasing water uptake in seeds (CS: 1.71 ± 0.59; PS/3.99 ± 1.56) and decreasing the contact angle from 80.7° to 57.9°, enhancing the seed surface's hydrophilicity. While the germination rate enhancement was subtle, the treatment presented an innovative route to modifying the seed's physiochemical properties. Specifically, storage proteins like albumin, globulin, and prolamin were notably reduced (Albumin (from 7.67 to 4.95 mg/g DW), Globulin (from 8.52 to 5.80 mg/g DW) and Prolamin (from 3.53 to 1.66 mg/g DW)). Additionally, there was a decline in the overall content of polyphenols (from 846.88 to 760.94 mg GAE/100g DW) and flavonoids (from 790.93 to 502.95 mg GAE/100g DW) and a decrease in the ferric reducing power (from 34.48 to 26.39 mg AAE/g DW). However, radical scavenging activity remained consistent. Intriguingly, FTIR-ATR spectral analysis post plasma treatment indicated oxidative alterations in the seed coat, marked by a distinctive intensity at 1732 cm ⁻1 . Objective: Undernutrition, stunted growth and obesity remain a concern in Algeria. Currently, limited data are available on nutrient intakes among children. Our study aimed to describe food and nutrient intakes and the role of milk formulas among Algerian children., Design: Dietary intakes were collected using a 4-d interview-based survey for children aged 0-24 months, living in urban areas in Algeria in 2019., Setting: Food consumptions were described. For children aged 6-24 months, nutrient intakes and adequacy were estimated. Modelling was used to estimate the nutritional impact of substituting cow's milk for age-appropriate infant formulas (IF)., Participants: Totally, 446 children aged 0-24 months., Results: Before 6 months, 91·6 % of infants were breastfed. Breastmilk was also the main milk consumed between 6 and 12 months, whereas cow's milk predominated after 12 months. In children aged 6-24 months, nutrient adequacy prevalence was above 75 % for the majority of nutrients. However, less than 30 % of the children had adequate intakes for total fats, Fe and vitamin D. Simulated substitution of cow's milk for IF led to improved adequacy for proteins, Fe, and vitamins D and E., Conclusions: Our study showed that breast-feeding rates were high until 6 months, then declined with age. Consumed foods allowed Algerian children aged 6-24 months to meet most of their nutritional needs, but inadequate intakes were reported for some key nutrients. Our modelling suggested that milk formulas may help to improve nutrient adequacy among non-breastfed infants. Other dietary changes could also be further investigated to enable children to meet all nutritional recommendations.

To prevent ocular pathologies, new generation of dietary supplements have been commercially available. They consist of nutritional supplement mixing components known to provide antioxidative properties, such as unsaturated fatty acid, resveratrol or flavonoids. However, to date, only one preclinical study has evaluated the impact of a mixture mainly composed of those components (Nutrof Total ® ) on the retina and demonstrated that in vivo supplementation prevents the retina from structural and functional injuries induced by light. Considering the crucial role played by the glial Müller cells in the retina, particularly to regulate the glutamate cycle to prevent damage in oxidative stress conditions, we questioned the impact of this ocular supplement on the glutamate metabolic cycle. To this end, various molecular aspects associated with the glutamate/glutamine metabolism cycle in Müller cells were investigated on primary Müller cells cultures incubated, or not, with the commercially mix supplement before being subjected, or not, to oxidative conditions. Our results demonstrated that in vitro supplementation provides guidance of the glutamate/glutamine cycle in favor of glutamine synthesis. These results suggest that glutamine synthesis is a crucial cellular process of retinal protection against oxidative damages and could be a key step in the previous in vivo beneficial results provided by the dietary supplementation.

Objective: The objective of our study was to evaluate, in a review of the literature, the impact of diagnostic ureteroscopy before total nephroureterectomy (NUT) on the risk of bladder recurrence., Methods: We conducted a literature review in the Pubmed database in March 2018. Initial research identified 45 publications. Following full text screening, 9 studies were finally included, with a total of 1041 NUT with URS prior versus 2909 NUT alone. The primary endpoint was bladder recurrence. Secondary objectives were specific survival and overall survival., Results: Bladder recurrence was reported in the 9 studies included. Diagnostic ureteroscopy was significantly associated with an increased risk of post-NUT bladder recurrence (HZ 1.42 [1.29-1.56], P<0.01). The specific survival and overall survival at 5 years, were reported in respectively 4 and 2 studies. There was no impact of the pre-NUT diagnostic URS on the specific survival (HZ 0.75 [0.54-1.03], P=0.08) or post-NUT overall survival (HZ 1.15 [0.68-1.96], P=0.59)., Conclusion: The URS diagnostic before NUT for TVEUS is associated with a significant increase in the risk of postoperative bladder recurrence., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. Purpose: To report oncological outcomes of patients with prostate cancer undergoing active surveillance according to SURACAP criteria., Methods: This multicentric study included patients who were initially treated with active surveillance for localized prostate cancer according to the SURACAP criteria. The duration of active surveillance as well as the causes of discontinuing the protocol and the definitive pathological results of patients who further underwent radical prostatectomy were retrospectively evaluated. The predictors of discontinuing active surveillance were assessed using a univariable Cox Model. In addition, the predictive value of initial MRI was assessed for patients who performed such imagery., Results: Between 2007 and 2013, 80 patients were included, with a median age of 64 years [47-74]. Median follow-up was 52.9 months [24-108]. At 5 years follow-up, 43.4% patients were still under surveillance. Among patients that underwent surgery, 17.8% had an extra-capsular extension. The risk of discontinuing was not significantly greater for patients with tumor size of 2 or 3mm versus 1mm (HR=0.9 [0.46-1.75], P=0.763), 2 positives cores versus 1 (HR=0.98 [0.48-2.02], P=0.967), T2a vs. T1c stage (HR=2.18 [0.77-6.18], P=0.133), increased PSA level (HR=1 [0.96-1.15], P=0.975) or the patient's age (HR=1 [0.93-1.16], P=0.966). Among the 50 patients who performed initial MRI, the results of such imagery was not significantly associated to the risk of discontinuing active surveillance MRI (HR=1.49 [0.63-3.52], P=0.36)., Conclusion: Although this study reveals a high rate of release from active surveillance at 5 years, the rate of extra-capsular tumors reported in the group of patients that underwent surgery is among the lowest in literature., Level of Evidence: 4., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. In the present study, we have evaluated one of the dietary supplements enriched with antioxidants and fish oil used in clinical care for patient with age-related macular degeneration. Rats were orally fed by a gastric canula daily with 0.2 ml of water or dietary supplement until they were sacrificed. After one week of treatment, animals were either sacrificed for lipid analysis in plasma and retina, or used for evaluation of rod-response recovery by electroretinography (ERG) followed by their sacrifice to measure rhodopsin content, or used for progressive light-induced retinal degeneration (PLIRD). For PLIRD, animals were transferred to bright cyclic light for one week. Retinal damage was quantified by ERG, histology and detection of apoptotic nuclei. Animals kept in dim-cyclic-light were processed in parallel. PLIRD induced a thinning of the outer nuclear layer and a reduction of the b-wave amplitude of the ERG in the water group. Retinal structure and function were preserved in supplemented animals. Supplement induced a significant increase in omega-3 fatty acids in plasma by 168% for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), 142% for docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and 19% for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and a decrease in the omega-6 fatty acids, DPA by 28%. In the retina, supplement induced significant reduction of linolenic acid by 67% and an increase in EPA and DPA by 80% and 72%, respectively, associated with significant decrease in omega-6 DPA by 42%. Supplement did not affect rhodopsin content or rod-response recovery. The present data indicate that supplement rapidly modified the fatty acid content and induced an accumulation of EPA in the retina without affecting rhodopsin content or recovery. In addition, it protected the retina from oxidative stress induced by light. Therefore, this supplement might be beneficial to slow down progression of certain retinal degeneration.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT1) is the most common form of inherited peripheral neuropathy. Although the disease is genetically heterogeneous, it has been demonstrated that the gene defect is the most frequent type (CMT1A) is the result of a partial duplication of band 17p11.2. Recent studies suggested that the peripheral hypomyelination syndrome in the trembler (Tr) mouse, a possible animal model for CMT1 disease, is associated with a point mutation in the peripheral myelin protein-22 gene (pmp-22). Expression of pmp-22 is particularly high in Schwann cells, and the protein is found in peripheral myelin. We now report that the human PMP-22 gene is contained within the CMT1A duplication. We therefore, suggest that increased dosage of the PMP-22 gene may be the cause of CMT1A neuropathy.
