We investigate superconducting gallium in its $\alpha$ phase using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at temperatures down to about 100 mK. High-resolution tunneling spectroscopies using both superconducting and normal tips show that superconducting $\alpha$-Ga is accurately described by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory, with a gap $\Delta_{\rm Ga}$ = 163 $\mu$eV on the $\alpha-$Ga(112) facet, with highly homogeneous spectra over the surface, including atomic defects and step edges. Using a superconducting Pb tip, we furthermore study the low-bias conductance features of the Josephson junction formed between tip and sample. The features are accurately described by dynamical Coulomb blockade theory, highlighting $\alpha-$Ga as a possible platform for surface science studies of mesoscopic superconductivity.

A parametrically modulated oscillator has two opposite-phase vibrational states at half the modulation frequency. An extra force at the vibration frequency breaks the symmetry of the states. The effect can be extremely strong due to the interplay between the force and the quantum fluctuations resulting from the coupling of the oscillator to a thermal bath. The force changes the rates of the fluctuation-induced walk over the quantum states of the oscillator. If the number of the states is large, the effect accumulates to an exponentially large factor in the rate of switching between the vibrational states. We study the classical dynamics of a system comprising a pair of Kerr-Duffing nonlinear oscillators, which are coupled through a nonlinear interaction and subjected to a parametric drive. Using the rotating wave approximation (RWA), we analyze the steady-state solutions for the amplitudes of the two oscillators. For the case of almost identical oscillators, we investigate separately the cases in which only one oscillator is parametrically driven and in which both oscillators are simultaneously driven. In the latter regime, we demonstrate that even when the parametric drives acting on the two oscillators are identical, the system can transition from a stable Nesymmetric solution to a broken-symmetry solution as the detuning is varied.

We investigate the direction-dependent switching current in a flux-tunable four-terminal Josephson junction defined in an InAs/Al two-dimensional heterostructure. The device exhibits the Josephson diode effect, with switching currents that depend on the sign of the bias current. The superconducting diode efficiency, reaching a maximum of $|\eta|\approx34\%$, is widely tunable - both in amplitude and sign - as a function of magnetic fluxes and gate voltages. Our observations are supported by a circuit model of three parallel Josephson junctions with non-sinusoidal current-phase relation. With respect to conventional Josephson interferometers, phase-tunable multiterminal Josephson junctions enable large diode efficiencies in structurally symmetric devices, where local magnetic fluxes break both time-reversal and spatial-inversion symmetries. Our work establishes a pathway to develop Josephson diodes with wide-range tunability and that do not rely on exotic materials or externally applied magnetic fields.

We perform switching current measurements of planar Josephson junctions (JJs) coupled by a common superconducting electrode, with independent control over the two superconducting phase differences. We observe an anomalous phase shift in the current--phase relation of a JJ as a function of gate voltage or phase difference in the second JJ. This demonstrates a nonlocal Josephson effect, and the implementation of a $\varphi_0$-junction which is tunable both electrostatically and magnetically. The anomalous phase shift was larger for shorter distances between the JJs and vanished for distances much longer than the superconducting coherence length. Results are consistent with the hybridization of ABSs, leading to the formation of an Andreev molecule. Our devices constitute a realization of a tunable superconducting phase source, and could enable new coupling schemes for hybrid quantum devices.

In hybrid Josephson junctions with three or more superconducting terminals coupled to a semiconducting region, Andreev bound states may form unconventional energy band structures, or Andreev matter, which are engineered by controlling superconducting phase differences. Here we report tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of three-terminal Josephson junctions realised in an InAs/Al heterostructure. The three terminals are connected to form two loops, enabling independent control over two phase differences and access to a synthetic Andreev band structure in the two-dimensional phase space. Our results demonstrate a phase-controlled Andreev molecule, originating from two discrete Andreev levels that spatially overlap and hybridise. Signatures of hybridisation are observed in the form of avoided crossings in the spectrum and band structure anisotropies in the phase space, all explained by a numerical model. Future extensions of this work could focus on addressing spin-resolved energy levels, ground state fermion parity transitions and Weyl bands in multiterminal geometries.

Light-matter interaction enables engineering of non-equilibrium quantum systems. In condensed matter, spatially and temporally cyclic Hamiltonians are expected to generate energy-periodic Floquet states, with properties inaccessible at thermal equilibrium. A recent work explored the tunnelling conductance of a planar Josephson junction under microwave irradiation, and interpreted replicas of conductance features as evidence of steady Floquet-Andreev states. Here we realise a similar device in a hybrid superconducting-semiconducting heterostructure, which utilises a tunnelling probe with gate-tunable transparency and allows simultaneous measurements of Andreev spectrum and current-phase relation of the planar Josephson junction. We show that, in our devices, spectral replicas in sub-gap conductance emerging under microwave irradiation are caused by photon assisted tunnelling of electrons into Andreev states. The current-phase relation under microwave irradiation is also explained by the interaction of Andreev states with microwave photons, without the need to invoke Floquet states. The techniques outlined in this study establish a baseline to distinguish photon assisted tunnelling from Floquet-Andreev states in mesoscopic devices, a crucial development towards understanding light-matter coupling in hybrid nanostructures.

Very recent experiments have reported the tunneling between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states at the atomic scale. These experiments have been realized with the help of a scanning tunneling microscope where a superconducting tip is functionalized with a magnetic impurity and is used to probe another magnetic impurity deposited on a superconducting substrate. In this way it has become possible to study for the first time the spin-dependent transport between individual superconducting bound states. Motivated by these experiments, we present here a comprehensive theoretical study of the tunneling processes between YSR bound states in a system in which two magnetic impurities are coupled to superconducting leads. Our theory is based on a combination of an Anderson model with broken spin degeneracy to describe the impurities and nonequilibrium Green's function techniques to compute the current-voltage characteristics. This combination allows us to describe the spin-dependent transport for an arbitrary strength of the tunnel coupling between the impurities. We first focus on the tunnel regime and show that our theory naturally explains the experimental observations of the appearance of current peaks in the subgap region due to both the direct and thermal tunneling between the YSR states in both impurities. Then, we study in detail the case of junctions with increasing transparency, which has not been experimentally explored yet, and predict the occurrence of a large variety of (multiple) Andreev reflections mediated by YSR states that give rise to a very rich structure in the subgap current. In particular, we predict the occurrence of multiple Andreev reflections that involve YSR states in different impurities. Phononic frequency combs have been attracting an increasing attention both as a qualitatively new type of nonlinear phenomena in vibrational systems and from the point of view of applications. It is commonly believed that at least two modes must be involved in generating a comb. In this paper we demonstrate that a comb can be generated by a single nanomechanical mode driven by a resonant monochromatic drive. The comb emerges where the drive is still weak, so that the anharmonic part of the mode potential energy remains small. We relate the effect to a negative nonlinear friction induced by the resonant drive, which makes the vibrations at the drive frequency unstable. We directly map the trajectories of the emerging oscillations in the rotating frame and show how these oscillations lead to the frequency comb in the laboratory frame. The results go beyond nanomechanics and suggest a qualitatively new approach to generating tunable frequency combs in single-mode vibrational systems.

Radiative heat transfer between bodies is often dominated by a narrow resonance in the transmission, e.~g. due to a cavity mode or a surface excitation. However, this resonant character is not visible in the average heat current. Here, we show that the noise spectrum of heat current can serve as a direct probe of the heat-carrying excitations. Namely, the resonant mode produces a sharp peak in the noise spectrum with a width related to the mode lifetime. We demonstrate that heat transfer in realistic superconducting circuits or between two-dimensional metals can realize our predictions.

We experimentally investigate the stochastic phase dynamics of planar Josephson junctions (JJs) and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) defined in epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructures, and characterized by a large ratio of Josephson energy to charging energy. We observe a crossover from a regime of macroscopic quantum tunneling to one of phase diffusion as a function of temperature, where the transition temperature $T^{*}$ is gate-tunable. The switching probability distributions are shown to be consistent with a small shunt capacitance and moderate damping, resulting in a switching current which is a small fraction of the critical current. Phase locking between two JJs leads to a difference in switching current between that of a JJ measured in isolation and that of the same JJ measured in an asymmetric SQUID loop. In the case of the loop, $T^*$ is also tuned by a magnetic flux.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical work that investigates the magnetic proximity effect at a ferromagnetic-insulator - superconductor (FI-S) interface. The simulation is based on the boundary condition for diffusive quasiclassical Greens functions, that accounts for arbitrarily strong spin-dependent effects and spin-mixing angles. The experimentally found differential conductance of an EuS-Al heterostructure is compared with a theoretical calculation. With the assumption of a uniform spin-mixing angle that depends on the externally applied field, we find good agreement between theory and experiment. The theory depends only on very few parameters, mostly specified by the experimental setup. In a Josephson junction, which is the central element in superconducting quantum technology, irreversibility arises from abrupt slips of the gauge-invariant quantum phase difference across the contact. A quantum phase slip (QPS) is often visualized as the tunneling of a flux quantum in the transverse direction to the superconducting weak link, which produces dissipation. In this work, we detect the instantaneous heat release caused by a QPS in a Josephson junction using time-resolved electron thermometry on a nanocalorimeter, signaled by an abrupt increase of the local electronic temperature in the weak link and subsequent relaxation back to equilibrium. Beyond providing a cornerstone in experimental quantum thermodynamics in form of observation of heat in an elementary quantum process, this result sets the ground for experimentally addressing the ubiquity of dissipation, including that in superconducting quantum sensors and qubits.

Topology in general but also topological objects such as monopoles are a central concept in physics. They are prime examples for the intriguing physics of gauge theories and topological states of matter. Vector monopoles are already frequently discussed such as the well-established Dirac monopole in three dimensions. Less known are tensor monopoles giving rise to tensor gauge fields. Here we report that tensor monopoles can potentially be realized in superconducting multi-terminal systems using the phase differences between superconductors as synthetic dimensions. In a first proposal we suggest a circuit of superconducting islands featuring charge states to realize a tensor monopole. As a second example we propose a triple dot system coupled to multiple superconductors that also gives rise to such a topological structure. All proposals can be implemented with current experimental means and the monopole readily be detected by measuring the quantum geometry.

Topology ultimately unveils the roots of the perfect quantization observed in complex systems. The 2D quantum Hall effect is the celebrated archetype. Remarkably, topology can manifest itself even in higher-dimensional spaces in which control parameters play the role of extra, synthetic dimensions. However, so far, a very limited number of implementations of higher-dimensional topological systems have been proposed, a notable example being the so-called 4D quantum Hall effect. Here we show that mesoscopic superconducting systems can implement higher-dimensional topology and represent a formidable platform to study a quantum system with a purely nontrivial second Chern number. We demonstrate that the integrated absorption intensity in designed microwave spectroscopy is quantized and the integer is directly related to the second Chern number. Finally, we show that these systems also admit a non-Abelian Berry phase. Hence, they also realize an enlightening paradigm of topological non-Abelian systems in higher dimensions., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, supplemental information available upon request

We present an ab-initio method to simulate the current noise in the presence of electron-vibration interactions in atomic and molecular junctions at finite temperature. Using a combination of nonequilibrium Keldysh Green's function techniques and density functional theory, we study the elastic and inelastic contributions to electron current and shot noise within a wide range of transmission values in systems exhibiting multiple electronic levels and vibrational modes. Within our model we find the upper threshold, at which the inelastic noise contribution changes sign, at a total transmission between $\tau\approx 0.90$ and $0.95$ for gold contacts. This is higher than predicted by the single-level Holstein model but in agreement with earlier experimental observations. We support our theoretical studies by noise measurements on single-atom gold contacts which confirm previous experiments but make use of a new setup with strongly reduced complexity of electronic circuitry. Furthermore, we identify 1,4-benzenedithiol connected to gold electrodes as a system to observe the lower sign change, which we predict at around $\tau\approx 0.2$. We discuss two theoretical proposals for controlling the nonequilibrium steady state of nanomechanical resonators using quantum electronic transport. Specifically?, we analyse two approaches to achieve the ground-state cooling of the mechanical vibration coupled to a quantum dot embedded between (i) spin-polarised contacts or (ii) a normal metal and a superconducting contact. Assuming a suitable coupling between the vibrational modes and the charge or spin of the electrons in the quantum dot, we show that ground-state cooling of the mechanical oscillator is within the state of the art for suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots operating as electromechanical devices., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

Photon emission by tunneling electrons can be encouraged by locating a resonator close to the tunnel junction and applying an appropriate voltage-bias. However, studies of normal metals show that the resonator also affects how the charges flow, facilitating processes in which correlated tunneling of two charges produces one photon. We develop a theory to analyze this kind of behavior in Josephson junctions by deriving an effective Hamiltonian describing processes where two Cooper-pairs generate a single photon. We determine the conditions under which the transport is dominated by incoherent tunneling of two Cooper-pairs, whilst also uncovering a regime of coherent double Cooper-pair tunneling. We show that the system can also display an unusual form of photon-blockade and hence could serve as a single-photon source.

Because of the broken time-translation symmetry, in periodically driven vibrational systems fluctuations of different vibration components have different intensities. Fluctuations of one of the components are often squeezed, whereas fluctuations of the other component, which is shifted in phase by {\pi}/2, are increased. Squeezing is a multifaceted phenomenon; it attracts much attention from the perspective of high-precision measurements. Here we demonstrate a new and hitherto unappreciated side of squeezing: its direct manifestation in the spectra of driven vibrational systems. With a weakly damped nanomechanical resonator, we study the spectrum of thermal fluctuations of a resonantly driven nonlinear mode. In the attained sideband-resolved regime, we show that the asymmetry of the spectrum directly characterizes the squeezing. This opens a way to deduce squeezing of thermal fluctuations in strongly underdamped resonators, for which a direct determination by a standard homodyne measurement is impeded by frequency fluctuations. The experimental and theoretical results are in excellent agreement. We further extend the theory to also describe the spectral manifestation of squeezing of quantum fluctuations.

We study the effects of spin-splitting and spin-flip scattering in a superconductor (S) on the thermoelectric properties of a tunneling contact to a metallic ferromagnet (F) using the Green's function method. A giant thermopower has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in such structures. This is attributed to the spin-dependent particle-hole asymmetry in the tunneling density of states in the S/F heterostructure. Here, we evaluate the S density of states and thermopower for a range of temperatures, Zeeman-splitting, and spin-flip scattering. In contrast to the naive expectation based on the negative effect of spin-flip scattering on Cooper pairing, we find that the spin-flip scattering strongly enhances the thermoelectric performance of the system in the low-field and low-temperature regime. This is attributed to a complex interplay between the charge and spin conductances caused by the softening of the spin-dependent superconducting gaps. The maximal value of the thermopower exceeds $k_{B}/e$ by a factor of $\approx$ 5 and has a nonmonotonic dependence on spin-splitting and spin-flip rate., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Thermoelectric effects result from the coupling of charge and heat transport, and can be used for thermometry, cooling and harvesting of thermal energy. The microscopic origin of thermoelectric effects is a broken electron-hole symmetry, which is usually quite small in metal structures, and vanishes at low temperatures. We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of thermoelectric effects in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures. We investigate the depencence of thermoelectric currents on the thermal excitation, as well as on the presence of a dc bias voltage across the junction. Large thermoelectric effects are observed in superconductor/ferromagnet and superconductor/normal-metal hybrid structures. The spin-independent signals observed under finite voltage bias are shown to be reciprocal to the physics of superconductor/normal-metal microrefrigerators. The spin-dependent thermoelectric signals in the linear regime are due to the coupling of spin and heat transport, and can be used to design more efficient refrigerators, Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology

Interband optical transitions in graphene are subject to pseudospin selection rules. Impulsive excitation with linearly polarized light generates an anisotropic photocarrier occupation in momentum space that evolves at timescales shorter than 100fs. Here, we investigate the evolution of non-equilibrium charges towards an isotropic distribution by means of fluence-dependent ultrafast spectroscopy and develop an analytical model able to quantify the isotropization process. In contrast to conventional semiconductors, the isotropization is governed by optical phonon emission, rather than electron-electron scattering, which nevertheless contributes in shaping the anisotropic photocarrier occupation within the first few fs., Comment: 9 pages

Boundary conditions in quasiclassical theory of superconductivity are of crucial importance for describing proximity effects in heterostructures between different materials. Although they have been derived for the ballistic case in full generality, corresponding boundary conditions for the diffusive limit, described by Usadel theory, have been lacking for interfaces involving strongly spin-polarized materials, such as e.g. half-metallic ferromagnets. Given the current intense research in the emerging field of superconducting spintronics, the formulation of appropriate boundary conditions for the Usadel theory of diffusive superconductors in contact with strongly spin-polarized ferromagnets for arbitrary transmission probability and arbitrary spin-dependent interface scattering phases has been a burning open question. Here we close this gap and derive the full boundary conditions for quasiclassical Green functions in the diffusive limit, valid for any value of spin polarization, transmission probability, and spin mixing angles (spin-dependent scattering phase shifts). It allows also for complex spin textures across the interface and for channel off-diagonal scattering (a necessary ingredient when the numbers of channels on the two sides of the interface differ). As an example we derive expressions for the proximity effect in diffusive systems involving half-metallic ferromagnets. In a superconductor/half-metal/superconductor Josephson junction we find $\phi_0$ junction behavior under certain interface conditions., Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures. Transport in superconducting heterostructures is very successfully described with quasiclassical Green's functions augmented by microscopically derived boundary conditions. However, so far the spin-dependence is in the diffusive approach included only for limiting cases. Here, we derive the fully spin-dependent boundary condition completing the Usadel equation and the circuit theory. Both, material specific spin-degrees of freedom and spin-dependent interface effects, i.e. spin-mixing and polarization of the transmission coefficients are treated exactly. This opens the road to accurately describe a completely new class of mesoscopic circuits including materials with strong intrinsic magnetic structure. We also discuss several experimentally relevant cases like the tunnel limit, a ferromagnetic insulator with arbitrarily strong magnetization and the limit of small spin-mixing., Comment: 5 pages

The superconducting proximity effect leads to strong modifications of the local density of states in diffusive or chaotic cavity Josephson junctions, which displays a phase-dependent energy gap around the Fermi energy. The so-called minigap of the order of the Thouless energy $E_{\mathrm{Th}}$ is related to the inverse dwell time in the diffusive region in the limit $E_{\mathrm{Th}}\ll\Delta$, where $\Delta$ is the superconducting energy gap. In the opposite limit of a large Thouless energy $E_{\mathrm{Th}}\gg\Delta$, a small new feature has recently attracted attention, namely, the appearance of a further secondary gap, which is around two orders of magnitude smaller compared to the usual superconducting gap. It appears in a chaotic cavity just below the superconducting gap edge $\Delta$ and vanishes for some value of the phase difference between the superconductors. We extend previous theory restricted to a normal cavity connected to two superconductors through ballistic contacts to a wider range of contact types. We show that the existence of the secondary gap is not limited to ballistic contacts, but is a more general property of such systems. Furthermore, we derive a criterion which directly relates the existence of a secondary gap to the presence of small transmission eigenvalues of the contacts. For generic continuous distributions of transmission eigenvalues of the contacts, no secondary gap exists, although we observe a singular behavior of the density of states at $\Delta$. Finally, we provide a simple one-dimensional scattering model which is able to explain the characteristic "smile" shape of the secondary gap., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

We analyze the coherent dynamics of a fluxonium device (Manucharyan et al 2009 Science 326 113) formed by a superconducting ring of Josephson junctions in which strong quantum phase fluctuations are localized exclusively on a single weak element. In such a system, quantum phase tunnelling by $2\pi $ occurring at the weak element couples the states of the ring with supercurrents circulating in opposite directions, while the rest of the ring provides an intrinsic electromagnetic environment of the qubit. Taking into account the capacitive coupling between nearest neighbors and the capacitance to the ground, we show that the homogeneous part of the ring can sustain electrodynamic modes which couple to the two levels of the flux qubit. In particular, when the number of Josephson junctions is increased, several low-energy modes can have frequencies lower than the qubit frequency. This gives rise to a quasiperiodic dynamics, which manifests itself as a decay of oscillations between the two counterpropagating current states at short times, followed by oscillation-like revivals at later times. We analyze how the system approaches such a dynamics as the ring's length is increased and discuss possible experimental implications of this non-adiabatic regime., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures (new, substantially revised version)

Understanding tunneling from an atomically sharp tip to a metallic surface requires to account for interactions on a nanoscopic scale. Inelastic tunneling of electrons generates emission of photons, whose energies intuitively should be limited by the applied bias voltage. However, experiments by Schull et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 057401 (2009)] indicate that more complex processes involving the interaction of electrons with plasmon polaritons lead to photon emission characterized by over-bias energies. We propose a model of this observation in analogy to dynamical Coulomb blockade, originally developed for treating the electronic environment in mesoscopic circuits. We explain the experimental finding quantitatively by the correlated tunneling of two electrons interacting with an LRC circuit modeling the local plasmon-polariton mode. The usually negligibly small thermoelectric effects in superconducting heterostructures can be boosted dramatically due to the simultaneous effect of spin splitting and spin filtering. Building on an idea of our earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{110}$, 047002 (2013)], we propose realistic mesoscopic setups to observe thermoelectric effects in superconductor heterostructures with ferromagnetic interfaces or terminals. We focus on the Seebeck effect being a direct measure of the local thermoelectric response and find that a thermopower of the order of $\sim200$ $\mu V/K$ can be achieved in a transistor-like structure, in which a third terminal allows to drain the thermal current. A measurement of the thermopower can furthermore be used to determine quantitatively the spin-dependent interface parameters that induce the spin splitting. For applications in nanoscale cooling we discuss the figure of merit for which we find enormous values exceeding 1 for temperature $\lesssim 1$K.

We investigate transport properties of a double quantum dot based Cooper pair splitter, where the superconducting lead consists of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The proposed device can be used to explore the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by testing the presence of gapless chiral edge states, which are predicted to exist if the bulk superconductor is described by a chiral $p$--wave state. The odd orbital symmetry of the bulk order parameter ensures that we can realize a regime where the electrons tunneling into the double dot system come from the chiral edge states and thereby leave their signature in the conductance. The density of Andreev levels in a normal metal ($N$) in contact with two superconductors ($S$) is known to exhibit an induced minigap related to the inverse dwell time. We predict a small secondary gap just below the superconducting gap edge---a feature that has been overlooked so far in numerous studies of the density of states in $S-N-S$ structures. In a generic structure with $N$ being a chaotic cavity, the secondary gap is the widest at zero phase bias. It closes at some finite phase bias, forming the shape of a "smile". Asymmetric couplings give even richer gap structures near the phase difference \pi. All the features found should be amendable to experimental detection in high-resolution low-temperature tunneling spectroscopy., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Josephson currents are carried by sharp Andreev states within the superconducting energy gap. We theoretically study the electronic transport of a magnetically tunable nanoscale junction consisting of a quantum dot connected to two superconducting leads and coupled to the spin of a molecular magnet. The exchange interaction between the molecular magnet and the quantum dot modifies the Andreev states due to a spin-dependent renormalization of the quantum dot's energy level and the induction of spin-flips. A magnetic field applied to the central region of the quantum dot and the molecular magnet further tunes the Josephson current and starts a precession of the molecular magnet's spin. We use a non-equilibrium Green's function approach to evaluate the transport properties of the junction. Our calculations reveal that the energy level of the dot, the magnetic field and the exchange interaction between the molecular magnet and the electrons occupying the energy level of the quantum dot can trigger transitions from a 0 to a $\pi$ state of the Josephson junction. The redistribution of the occupied states induced by the magnetic field strongly modifies the current-phase relation. We study thermal and charge transport in a three-terminal setup consisting of one superconducting and two ferromagnetic contacts. We predict that the simultaneous presence of spin filtering and of spin- dependent scattering phase shifts at each of the two interfaces will lead to very large nonlocal thermo- electric effects both in clean and in disordered systems. The symmetries of thermal and electric transport coefficients are related to fundamental thermodynamic principles by the Onsager reciprocity. Our results show that a nonlocal version of the Onsager relations for thermoelectric currents holds in a three-terminal quantum coherent ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructure including a spin-dependent crossed Andreev reflection and coherent electron transfer processes., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material

The supercurrent of a quantum point contact coupled to a nanomagnet strongly depends on the dynamics of the nanomagnet's spin. We employ a fully microscopic model to calculate the transport properties of a junction coupled to a spin whose dynamics is modeled as Larmor precession brought about by an external magnetic field and find that the dynamics affects the charge and spin currents by inducing transitions between the continuum states below the superconducting gap edge and the Andreev levels. This redistribution of the quasiparticles leads to a non-equilibrium population of the Andreev levels and an enhancement of the supercurrent which is visible as a modified current-phase relation as well as a non-monotonous critical current as function of temperature. The non-monotonous behavior is accompanied by a corresponding change in spin-transfer torques acting on the precessing spin and leads to the possibility of using temperature as a means to tune the back-action on the spin., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study transfer of a quantum state through XX spin chains with static imperfections. We combine the two standard approaches for state transfer based on (i) modulated couplings between neighboring spins throughout the spin chain and (ii) weak coupling of the outermost spins to an unmodulated spin chain. The combined approach allows us to design spin chains with modulated couplings and localized boundary states, permitting high-fidelity state transfer in the presence of random static imperfections of the couplings. The modulated couplings are explicitly obtained from an exact algorithm using the close relation between tridiagonal matrices and orthogonal polynomials [Linear Algebr. Appl. 21, 245 (1978)]. We study transport of fermions in a system composed of a short optical lattice connecting two finite atomic reservoirs at different filling levels. The average equilibration current through the optical lattice, for strong lattice-reservoir coupling and finite temperatures, is calculated within the Landauer formalism using a nonequilibrium Green's functions approach. We moreover determine quantum and thermal fluctuations in the transport and find significant shot-to-shot deviations from the average equilibration current. We show how to control the atomic current by engineering specific optical lattice potentials without requiring site-by-site manipulations and suggest the realization of a single level model. We present an analysis of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices for the case where the lattice potential of the fermions is tilted and the bosons (in the superfluid phase) are described by Bogoliubov phonons. It is shown that the Bogoliubov phonons enable hopping transitions between fermionic Wannier-Stark states; these transitions are accompanied by energy dissipation into the superfluid and result in a net atomic current along the lattice. We derive a general expression for the drift velocity of the fermions and find that the dependence of the atomic current on the lattice tilt exhibits negative differential conductance and phonon resonances. Numerical simulations of the full dynamics of the system based on the time-evolving block decimation algorithm reveal that the phonon resonances should be observable under the conditions of a realistic measuring procedure., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Motivated by recent proposals on strain-engineering of graphene electronic circuits we calculate conductivity, shot-noise and the density of states in periodically deformed graphene. We provide the solution to the Dirac-Kronig-Penney model, which describes the phase-coherent transport in clean monolayer samples with an one-dimensional modulation of the strain and the electrostatic potentials. We compare the exact results to a qualitative band-structure analysis. We find that periodic strains induce large pseudo-gaps and suppress charge transport in the direction of strain modulation. The strain-induced minima in the gate-voltage dependence of the conductivity characterize the quality of graphene superstructures. The effect is especially strong if the variation of inter-atomic distance exceeds the value a^2/l, where a is the lattice spacing of free graphene and l is the period of the superlattice. A similar effect induced by a periodic electrostatic potential is weakened due to Klein tunnelling., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We discuss the occupation number correlations in an ultracold system of interacting fermionic atoms. For a system with a special energy-level distribution, viz. two multiply-degenerate levels, explicit expressions for the correlation functions are derived in a canonical approach using the exact ground state wavefunction of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. We evaluate the correlators numerically for different interaction strength and find analytical expressions in some limiting cases. We investigate the current and noise characteristics of a double quantum dot system. The strong correlations induced by the Coulomb interaction create entangled two-electron states and lead to signatures in the transport properties. We show that the interaction parameter phi, which measures the admixture of the double-occupancy contribution to the singlet state and thus the degree of entanglement, can be directly accessed through the Fano factor of super-Poissonian shot noise., Comment: 5 pages, major revision, to be published in Phys. We present a theoretical study of the density of states and supercurrent in diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. In particular, we study the influence on these two equilibrium properties of both an arbitrary transparency of the SN interfaces and the presence of spin-flip scattering in the normal wire. We show that the minigap that is present in the spectrum of the diffusive wire is very sensitive to the interface transmission. More mportantly, we show that at arbitrary transparency the minigap replaces the Thouless energy as the relevant energy scale for the proximity effect, determining for instance the temperature dependence of the critical current. We also study in detail how the critical current is suppressed by the effect of spin-flip scattering, which can be due to either magnetic impurities or, under certain circumstances, to an external magnetic field. Our analysis based on the quasiclassical theory of diffusive superconductors can be very valuable to establish quantitative comparisons between experiment and theory., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We investigate electrical transport through a single-electron transistor coupled to a nanomechanical oscillator. Using a combination of a master-equation approach and a numerical Monte Carlo method, we calculate the average current and the current noise in the strong-coupling regime, studying deviations from previously derived analytic results valid in the limit of weak-coupling. After generalizing the weak-coupling theory to enable the calculation of higher cumulants of the current, we use our numerical approach to study how the third cumulant is affected in the strong-coupling regime. In this case, we find an interesting crossover between a weak-coupling transport regime where the third cumulant heavily depends on the frequency of the oscillator to one where it becomes practically independent of this parameter. Finally, we study the spectrum of the transport noise and show that the two peaks found in the weak-coupling limit merge on increasing the coupling strength. Our calculation of the frequency-dependence of the noise also allows to describe how transport-induced damping of the mechanical oscillations is affected in the strong-coupling regime., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We study the linear diamagnetic response of a superconducting cylinder coated by a normal-metal layer due to the proximity effect using the clean limit quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. We compare the results for the susceptibility with those for a planar geometry. Interestingly, for $R\sim d$ the cylinder exhibits a stronger overscreening of the magnetic field, i.e., at the interface to the superconductor it can be less than (-1/2) of the applied field. Even for $R\gg d$, the diamagnetism can be increased as compared to the planar case, viz. the magnetic susceptibility $4\pi\chi$ becomes smaller than -3/4. This behaviour can be explained by an intriguing spatial oscillation of the magnetic field in the normal layer.

We analyze the charge transport between a one-dimensional weakly interacting electron gas and a superconductor within the scaling approach in the basis of scattering states. We derive the renormalization group equations, which fully account for the intrinsic energy dependence due to Andreev reflection. A strong renormalization of the corresponding reflection phase is predicted even for a perfectly transparent metal-superconductor interface. The interaction-induced suppression of the Andreev conductance is shown to be highly sensitive to the normal state resistance, providing a possible explanation of experiments with carbon-nanotube/superconductor junctions by Morpurgo et al. We consider electronic current transport through a ballistic one-dimensional quantum wire connected to two ferromagnetic leads. We study the effects of the spin-dependence of interfacial phase shifts (SDIPS) acquired by electrons upon scattering at the boundaries of the wire. The SDIPS produces a spin splitting of the wire resonant energies which is tunable with the gate voltage and the angle between the ferromagnetic polarizations. This property could be used for manipulating spins. We propose a three-terminal spin-valve setup, to determine experimentally the spin-dependent shot noise, which carries information on the spin-relaxation processes. Based on a spin-dependent Boltzmann-Langevin approach, we show that the spin Fano factor, defined as the spin shot noise to the mean charge current, strongly depends on the spin-flip scattering rate in the normal wire. While in the parallel configuration the spin Fano factor always decreases below its unpolarized value with increasing spin injection, for the antiparallel case it varies nonmonotonically. We also show that in contrast to the charge current Fano factor, which varies appreciable only in the antiparallel case, the spin Fano factor allows for a more sensitive determination of the spin-flip scattering rate., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We examine the full counting statistics of quantum dots, which display super-Poissonian shot noise. By an extension to a generic situation with many excited states we identify the underlying transport process. The statistics is a sum of independent Poissonian processes of bunches of different sizes, which leads to the enhanced noise. The obtained results could be useful to determine transport characteristics in molecules and large quantum dots, since the noise (and higher cumulants) allow to identify the internal level structure, which is not visible in the average current., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, submitted to PRB
