Abstract

This method article proposes the establishment of a feasibility space as an objective to be achieved during the development of new technologies to convert energy from renewable resources. The feasibility space can also be a reference when designing an energy system based on renewable resources. The feasibility space is a set of parameter values for the design stage that define the economic and technical feasibility of an energy system or a new technology, which must be satisfied when the energy system comes into operation or when the new technology for converting power goes into operation. The study of possible feasibility spaces allows characterizing energy systems or new technologies as attractive investments, or on the other hand, as unfeasible ventures. - The method proposes to establish a goal to achieve during the development of technologies for energy conversion - The method provides a benchmark for both the stages of design and development of generation systems and new technologies - The feasibility space constitutes a planning tool for power systems based on renewable resources of any size, Comment: method article, 4 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, 6 references

Abstract

Homer Legacy software is a well-known software for simulation of small hybrid systems that can be used for both design and research. This dataset is a set of files generated by Homer Legacy bringing the simulation results of hybrid energy systems over the last seven years, as a consequence of the research work led by Dr. Alexandre Beluco, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The data correspond to thirty papers published in the last seven years. Two of them describe hydro PV hybrid systems with photovoltaic panels operating on the water surface of reservoirs. One of these twelve papers suggests the model-ing of hydropower plants with reservoirs and the other the modeling of pumped hydro stor-age, and a third still uses these models in a place that could receive both the two types of hy-droelectric power plant. The other simulated hybrid systems include wind turbines, diesel generators, batteries, among other components. This data article describes the files that inte-grate this dataset and the papers that have been published presenting the hybrid systems under study and discussing the results. 3. A geothermal hydro wind PV hybrid system with energy storage in an extinct volcano for 100% renewable supply in Ometepe, Nicaragua

Abstract

Renewable resources are constantly increasing their share in energy systems around the world. This paper evaluates how the capital cost of renewable technologies affects the optimal configuration and cost of energy of an isolated power system, comprising only renewable resources. HOMER software was adapted to include and simulate pumped storage hydropower and geothermal power plants. Ometepe island, Nicaragua, was selected as case study because wind, solar and geothermal resources are available, but more importantly, it has an extinct volcano with a crater lake on its top that could be used as the upper reservoir for pumped storage hydropower. When geothermal is considered, the results show that this technology is able to serve the base load of the system, reducing the required installed capacity of other resources, as well as decreasing the storage requirements and excess electricity production. When the geothermal option is not included, the low complementarity in time of the other variable resources increases the required size of the solar and wind parks , amounting to up to 6.5 times the peak power, consequently rising the cost of energy and excess electricity production. 4. Assessing temporal complementarity between three variable energy sources by means of correlation and compromise programming

Abstract

Renewable energies are deployed worldwide to mitigate climate change and push power systems towards sustainability. However, the weather-dependent nature of renewable energy sources often hinders their integration to national grids. Combining different sources to profit from beneficial complementarity has often been proposed as a partial solution to overcome these issues. This paper introduces a novel method for quantifying total temporal energetic complementarity between three different variable renewable sources, based on well-known mathematical techniques: correlation coefficients and compromise programming. It has the major advantage of allowing the simultaneous assessment of partial and total complementarity. The method is employed to study the complementarity of wind, solar and hydro resources on different temporal scales in a region of Poland. Abstract

Sistemas híbridos de energia têm custos iniciais mais altos do que os sistemas baseados em apenas um recurso renovável, no entanto, apresentam melhor desempenho e um menor custo para a energia fornecida aos consumidores. A possível complementaridade entre os recursos energéticos utilizados pode contribuir para um melhor aproveitamento da energia disponível. Em larga escala, a complementaridade entre usinas de conversão de energia pode servir como ferramenta para a gestão de recursos energéticos. A complementaridade energética pode se manifestar entre recursos ou usinas em um mesmo local e/ou entre locais diferentes. Este trabalho faz o uso do estabelecimento de rede de células hexagonais e da elaboração de rosas de complementaridade para quantificar a complementaridade espacial no tempo, expressando seu resultado através de mapas. Essa técnica é aplicada para usinas hidrelétricas e parques eólicos no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, no sul do Brasil, e apresenta, como resultado, seu mapa de complementaridade espacial no tempo. Entre os resultados, a complementaridade espacial no tempo entre as centrais hidrelétricas situadas na fronteira norte do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e os parques eólicos que se encontram na costa leste apresentaram máxima complementaridade. Também são avaliados ponderadores capazes de descrever o grau de decaimento da complementaridade em relação à distância, como forma de estimar a área na qual a os efeitos de complementaridade energética podem ser aproveitados de modo mais eficaz. Hybrid energy systems have higher start-up costs than systems based on just one renewable resource, however, they deliver better performance and a lower cost for energy supplied to consumers. The possible complementarity between the energy resources used can contribute to a better use of the available energy. On a large scale, complementarity between power conversion plants can serve as a tool for the management of energy resources. Energy complementarity can be verified between resources or plants in the same place and - or between different sites. This work makes use of the hexagonal cell network establishment and the elaboration of complementary roses to quantify the spatial complementarity in time, expressing its result through maps. This technique is applied to hydroelectric plants and wind farms in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and presents, as a result, its spatial complementarity map in time. Among the results, the spatial complementarity in time between the hydroelectric power plants located on the northern border of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the wind farms on the east coast showed maximum complementarity. Weights are also evaluated capable of describing the degree of decay of the complementarity with respect to the distance, as a way of estimating the area in which the effects of energy complementarity can be used more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose:The objective of this research was to implement new inventory management in a footwear company through the analysis of indicators obtained from inventory data collection. Design/methodology/approach:The ABC analysis methods, demand forecasting, safety stock, reorder point, and economic order quantity were applied. The items in inventory were classified by order of economic importance through ABC analysis, and the proposed indicators were analyzed to determine the moment the inventory replenishment should be carried out as well as the purchase lot size for each item. The research also investigated the behavior of the demand and pointed out the demand forecasting method that came closest to reality. Findings:The study presents a method of implementing inventory management based on indicators derived from the application of ABC curve methods, demand forecasting, safety stock, re-fulfillment point, and economic purchased lot. It also indicates how the ABC classification of stocks can check the most representative materials in stock. The study also highlights that the rejection of modifications can be surpassed by obtaining favorable results. Research limitations/implications:The inventory management applied in this work is based on indicators that resulted in two primary data that defined the size of the purchased lot to be ordered and the amount of material needed. Practical implications: The methods of ABC analysis, demand forecasting, safety stock, reorder point, and economic order quantity were applied. 40. Aplicação do sistema de troca rápida de ferramentas no setor CNC de uma indústria de moldes para calçados

Abstract

Este trabalho apresenta a aplicação do sistema de troca rápida de ferramentas, (TRF), bem como os resultados obtidos nas operações de setup no setor CNC de uma indústria de moldes para calçados, relacionando a situação anterior e posterior às mudanças do ambiente, atravésde um comparativo entre ambos. Ao aplicar as técnicas do sistema de troca rápida de ferramentas, os ganhos obtidos pelo setor foram a redução do tempo de setup em 60%, com tempo médio de setup ficando em aproximadamente sete minutos, e o aumento da capacidade produtiva do setor em aproximadamente 3%. Além disso, houve padronização de processos por parte dos operadores, mediante a redução da incidência de erros sobre as peças usinadas. A aplicação da metodologia TRF contribuiu, através do treinamento dos operadores, para que esses encarregados pudessem sugerir melhorias no processo produtivo. Dentre os benefícios apresentados destacam-se a redução do tempo de troca de material, a redução do tempo gasto com ajuste fino, menor probabilidade de erros durante as mudanças, a melhoria na qualidade dos produtos, maior confiabilidade por parte dos operadores, a redução de estoques intermediários, a flexibilização do sistema produtivo, entre outros.

45. Pico Hydro for power generation with Small-scale hydroplants

Abstract

Pico Hydro is a concept used for small-scale hydroplants for power generation under 5 kW. Small turbines of 200 to 300 W can supply a specific demand, such as a lamp, circuit, sensor, and others aplications. Pico Hydro generally occur in the flow, without the presence of a reservoir. Pipes divert the flow directly to a small turbine before being exhausted. This paper is the projection of a system to capture rainwater for the generation of electric power in small devices, consumable questioning – if your income. It is a system of great importance, as well as take advantage of a natural phenomenon, will be generating clean energy that can be reused on another device. The Project was based on a study of Turbine Michell – Banki, which turns water motion into mechanical work. The system was developed in three stages: theoretical calculations, the mounting system (simplified), and practical tests with water and the electronics part. The estimates were prepared with a theoretical basis in commercial product catalogs, enabling a functional simulation with the real prototype, but with a focus on the electrical system, eliminating the presence of water. The set is not yet able to provide useful energy volumes in small devices, showing relatively low yield. The individuality of the analyzed system undermines the results, which can be elevated with the multiplication of generators and capacitors, depending on the demand for energy needed to fuel a specific device.

47. Productivity improvement in a polishing sector of a metallurgical industry with MASP application

Abstract

This paper presents the application of the Analysis and Problem Solving Method (MASP) in the reduction of losses and the search for higher productivity of the forged part polishing sector. The decline of the demand for hand tools such as the forged hammer causes a reduction in the utilization of productive capacity and a decrease in the labor employed. The objective of this paper is to identify opportunities for improvements in sanding and polishing line productivity. The purpose also contemplates the organization of the sector to improve performance in the development and maintenance of the company's competitiveness. The methodology used was a case study. From the analysis of losses and the use of quality tools, it was possible to propose inexpensive and straightforward actions, improving the organization of the sector, reducing production times, as well as reducing ergonomic risks.

This paper presents a study on the adaptation of fuel stations to hydrogen fuel, which has recently been gaining ground in the automotive industry because it is used as fuel in hydrogen cells to power the car engine, causing no exhaust gases greenhouse to the earth's atmosphere. With this in mind, the group exposes as a solution to the problem of supplying large quantities of these cars, a possible adaptation of the fuel stations, starting from an electrolytic process fed by solar panels found in the cover of the fuel station, in order separate the hydrogen of water. Scientific articles were used as an aid to this research.

Abstract

Renewable energy sources have shown remarkable growth in recent times in terms of their contribution to sustainable societies. However, integrating them into the national power grids is usually hindered because of their weather-dependent nature and variability. The combination of different sources to profit from their beneficial complementarity has often been proposed as a partial solution to overcome these issues. Thus, efficient planning for optimizing the exploitation of these energy resources requires different types of decision support tools. A mathematical index for assessing energetic complementarity between multiple energy sources constitutes an important tool for this purpose, allowing a comparison of complementarity between existing facilities at different planning stages and also allowing a dynamic assessment of complementarity between variable energy sources throughout the operation, assisting in the dispatch of power supplies. This article presents a method for quantifying and spatially representing the total temporal energetic complementarity between three different variable renewable sources, through an index created from correlation coefficients and compromise programming. The method is employed to study the complementarity of wind speed, solar radiation and surface runoff on a monthly scale using continental Colombia as a case study during the year of 2015.•This paper describes a method for quantifying and spatially representing energetic complementarity between three renewable energy sources.•The method quantifies energetic complementarity by combining known metrics: correlations and compromise programming.•The proposed index for energetic complementarity assessment is sensitive to the time scale adopted.
