Abstract

The integration of electronic devices and sensors into textiles has many different potential applications. Textile fabrics, from clothing to upholstery and home textiles, are an integral part of daily life and the ability to combine electronics into textiles means that a huge range of valuable data can be collected and used by the wearer to monitor their health, performance and wellbeing, among other uses. One of the most pressing challenges is that of interconnecting electronic components via the textile fibres in a robust and reliable way. Another aspect to be studied is the ability for the electronics to be connected and disconnected when necessary; for example, when charging the batteries or washing the garment. It is this aspect that has been considered by this development to facilitate ease-of-use among the older people. In addition, the complete package must be comfortable enough not to restrict movement, and must be unobtrusive so as to avoid any embarrassment to the wearer. The present paper presents a new solution for the connection of electronic measuring and monitoring devices to textile sensors to monitor variables such as movement, temperature, heart rate and breathing.

12. How olive washing and storage affect fruit ethanol and virgin olive oil ethanol, ethyl esters and composition.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Olives are stored for a short time after harvesting pending processing in the oil mills. Furthermore, olives are often washed prior to fruit storage. In this work we study how washing and storage affect fruit ethanol content and the effect on virgin olive oil ethanol content and quality. RESULTS: Olive storage produced an increase in the fruit ethanol content, achieving values six times higher when storage was in silos. Washing the olives resulted in an increase in fruit ethanol content, although when washed olives were processed immediately no difference was found. The increase in fruit ethanol content during storage was reflected in higher oil ethanol concentration. Similarly, olive washing resulted in oils with higher ethanol concentration. Industrial conditions gave more important increases in oil ethanol content than that from olives processed by hand. For quality parameters all the olive oils were classified as 'extra virgin'. In general, oils showed a slight decrease in some sensory attributes. At industrial scale after 24 h storage oils were classified as 'virgin' because sensory defects were found. CONCLUSION: Olive storage should be avoided or reduced to less than 12 h; if possible, olives should not be washed before storage since this practice favors losses in sensory characteristics and the synthesis of ethanol, a precursor of ethyl esters. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Dynamic and Improvisational Capabilities in Small Defense Contractor Firms: An Investigation into the Role of IT Enabled Business Processes

Abstract

In turbulent environments where the competitive landscape is shifting and uncertain, the dynamic capabilities by which firm manager’s, integrate, build, and reconfigure internal and external competences becomes the source of sustained competitive advantage. As they attempt to reconfigure their organizational competencies, firms are turning to Information Technology (IT) resources as an enabling resource. While the importance of dynamic capabilities has been widely recognized, in today’s fast paced and ever changing business landscape, the need for improvisational capabilities has also been underscored. Whereas dynamic capabilities refer to the ability to respond to change through “planned” reconfiguration in moderately turbulent times, improvisational capabilities refer to the ability to respond to change through “spontaneous” reconfiguration in highly turbulent times. This study begins to defragment dynamic and improvisational capability literature and demonstrate the need for these two complementary capabilities. This study also develops and offers an initial prescription for executing these complementary capabilities. This study highlights the significant differences in the execution of dynamic and improvisational capabilities at the sub-routine level. Lastly, this study offers valuable insight into how IT can enable both dynamic and improvisational capabilities.

The Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) is a high water speed amphibious armored personnel carrier that will replace the current family of Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicles. The AAAV is currently in Phase I of the DOD Acquisition Process. During this phase-extensive development, testing is being conducted and prototypes are being constructed. Ongoing tests of the current electrical system architecture are revealing problems and issues that need to be addressed. Present testing is also revealing the need for a troubleshooting tool that can be used to simulate and test proposed solutions. A distributive computing effort is being conducted with Purdue University in order to provide the Marine Corps a tool where by it can test and evaluate the entire AAAV electrical system architecture. This document provides a general system description of the AAAV, an electrical system architecture overview, and a candidate electrical system description. Testing, modeling, and computer simulation efforts applied to the NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) fan/ filter motor drive and battery banks are described and the resulting data analyzed. Current research is investigating an issue regarding energy being forced back into the high power distribution bus due to regeneration from sudden impacts on the vehicle turret. An ultra capacitor bank may be incorporated in the AAAV electrical system in an effort to mitigate the effect of this regenerative energy.
