Simulium ���IL- 8 ��� We analyzed the chromosome preparations of 4 larvae, all females, from Sites 3 and 4 (Table 1). Chromosomal complement. In our small sample, the following inversions were found in the homozygous condition: IL- 2, IL- 8, IIIP- 1, and IIIL- 1 cy,ca. The last-mentioned inversion was associated with a homozygous, thin, strongly staining band (tb) at the junction of 86 B and 88 A (Fig. 6 B). A subterminal heteroband (Hb 45 B) in IIS (Fig. 6 A) was homozygous in all 4 larvae. A chromocenter, ectopic pairing, and B chromosomes were absent. Sex chromosomes. Without males, no statement can be made about the sex chromosomes. Autosomal polymorphisms. A subterminal heteroband (Hb 74 A) in IIIS (Fig 6 B) was heterozygous in two larvae. This heteroband was distinct from the taxonomically widespread Hb 74 C 2 of Hunter (1987). Taxonomic status. No other chromosomally analyzed species in the S. vernum group has a banding sequence like that of our 4 larvae. In addition to European species that have been formally analyzed (summarized by Adler & Crosskey 2015), we have unpublished information for S. brevidens (Rubtsov) and S. quasidecolletum Crosskey, each of which is chromosomally unique and lacks inversion IL- 8. We do not have chromosomal data for S. bertrandi Grenier & Dorier, S. codreanui (Sherban), S. oligotuberculatum (Knoz), or some of the putative Italian endemics. One of our 4 larvae, however, was mature, and its uncurled gill histoblast did not have an elongated base or a swollen dorsal trunk, eliminating S. codreanui and S. oligotuberculatum. The postgenal cleft was rounded or slightly angular anteriorly, suggesting that the species is not S. bertrandi, which has a more angular cleft (similar to that of S. argyreatum Meigen). No pupae in the collections at Sites 3 and 4 had the elongated microtubercles with secondary granules characteristic of S. bertrandi (Grenier & Dorier 1959). We, therefore, suggest that these larvae represent a new, formally undescribed species, here designated Simulium ���IL- 8 ���. We refrain from formally describing a new species until additional life stages are collected. Bionomics. Larvae were collected in two streams, both with open canopies. One stream (Site 3) was less than 0.5 m wide with a sandy and stony substrate, whereas the other (Site 4) was twice as wide with a sandy substrate and some macrophytes harboring the preimaginal stages. Trichocera (Trichocera) marocana, n. sp. Differential diagnosis. Male: sternite 9 broad, posterior margin straight, set with bristles; gonocoxal bridge divided; gonostyle with basal tubercle of variable size; aedeagal complex of the subgenus Trichocera type, with lateral apodemes inclined to basal ones; parameres relatively long and fused only in basalmost section; tip of aedeagus broad, open. The external appearance is similar to that of T. (S.) sardiniensis; the shape of aedeagal complex is decisive. In T. (S.) sardiniensis the lateral apodemes are declined from basal ones and close to parameres (see Petra��iūnas 2009: fig. 6), i.e., in a way characteristic to the species of the subgenus Saltrichocera as defined by Krzemińska (2002). Etymology. The new species name is made after the country (Latinized form). Type material. Holotype male, Morocco, Affluent Oued Akrir, 23.XI. 2012 (leg. O. Driauach & B. Belqat), housed in the Institute of Systematics and evolution of Animals, Polish Academy of Sciences; ul. Sławkowska 17; 31 ���016 Krak��w, Poland. Paratype male of same locality and date, housed in the Laboratory of Ecology, Biodiversity and Environment, Faculty of Sciences, University Abdelmalek Essa��di, T��touan, Morocco. Both specimens are stored in ethanol. Description. Small species; wing size ca. 5 mm. Body colour dark brown (in alcohol; genuine colour may be even darker). Antennae with f 1 short, barely twice as long as pedicel; subsequent flagellomeres are of similar size (Fig. 2 C). Pubescence rather scarce and relatively coarse; verticils 2��� 3 x as long as pubescence. Thorax with pleura bare. Tarsal claw of hind leg small, ca. 1 / 4 of length of fifth tarsomere (Fig. 2 D). Wing venation as in the genus, proportions of R 2 + 3 + 4 /R 2 + 3 variable. Sc densely set with setae. Male genitalia (Fig. 2 A, B, E���G). Sternite 9 very broad, distal margin almost straight, only slightly wavy in both specimens, set with bristles. Gonocoxal bridge not fused medially, low, broad; inner outline of triangular shape, inner margins of the bridge strongly sclerotized and dark (Fig. 2 A, B). Gonostyles c. 1.3 x as long as gonocoxites, almost parallel-sided, with distinct basal tubercle. Adeagal complex (Fig. 2 E���F) of the subgenus Trichocera type (illustrated by Krzemińska et al. 2009: fig. 57), with lateral apodemes inclined to basal ones. Parameres relatively long as for the subgenus, fused only at base by a strong membrane forming a so-called hood (sensu Wood 1991: 260). Tip of aedeagus straight and widely open (Fig. 2 E). Female unknown. Remark. The specimens from Morocco (Fig. 3) do not differ from those of the terra typica in the details of male and female genitalia, tarsal claws in male, and the antennae with swollen first flagellomeres in the males and, to a greater extent, in the females. This is only the second record of this newly described species, known till now only from Sardinia, where it also occurs in the mountains above 1000 m (compare Table 1). Petra��iūnas (2009) rightly noticed a great resemblance of this species to Trichocera (Saltrichocera) borealis Lackschewitz, 1931. The only differences are smaller tarsal claws in males of T. (S.) sardiniensis. This species also has longer antennae which may develop so in warmer climate (compare discussion in Krzemińska et al. 2009: 142 ��� 3). Undoubtedly both species are mutual closest relatives, although T. (S.) borealis is known from the northernmost regions of Europe Palearctic (ex. Dahl & Krzemińska 2008), while T. (S.) sardiniensis occurs in the southernmost region of the genus distribution. This wide geographical disjunction of both species suggests postglacial history of their speciation initiated by separation of populations in the glacial period, when fauna from northern Europe was pushed south to refugia in the Mediterranean area. Subsequent division of populations in isolated refugia, and various histories of their recolonization northwards resulted in allopatric speciation and distribution.
