Olanzapine is a second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) used in the treatment of schizophrenia and several on- and off-label conditions. While effective in reducing psychoses, acute olanzapine treatment causes rapid hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia and these perturbations are linked to an increased risk of developing cardiometabolic disease. Increases in glucagon are central to the metabolic side effects of olanzapine. Amylin receptor activation has been shown to reduce circulating glucagon but it is unclear if targeting amylin signaling would be an effective approach to lessen olanzapine-induced hyperglycemia alone or as an adjunct with other glucose lowering medications such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) receptor agonist liraglutide. The purpose of this study was to 1) determine if treatment with recombinant amylin or the amylin receptor agonist pramlintide is sufficient to protect against acute olanzapine-induced impairments in glucose and lipid homeostasis and 2) if there are synergistic effects of combining pramlintide and liraglutide. We hypothesized that amylin and pramlintide would confer protection against olanzapine-induced perturbations in glucose homeostasis and that these effects would be additive with liraglutide. We found that pramlintide co-treatment lowered olanzapine-induced increases in glucagon:insulin. There was an additive effect of pramlintide and liraglutide in protecting against olanzapine-induced hyperglycemia and a synergistic effect on markers of dyslipidemia. Our findings provide evidence that pramlintide, while moderately protective against some aspects of olanzapine-induced metabolic dysfunction, can be used to enhance other interventions which protect against olanzapine-induced hyperglycemia. Ao escrevemos sobre o sentimento trágico de Antero de Quental e de Miguel de Unamuno tínhamos um propósito: mediatamente conhecermos mais profundamente ambos autores ibéricos; imediatamente contemplamos a alma ibérica, e muito em particular a lusa, através da influência de Antero sobre Unamuno, ou seja, o sentimento trágico da vida daquele sobre este. Antero e Unamuno seguiram caminhos semelhantes, tiveram ideias paralelas, típicas de suas respectivas gerações e usaram o método dialético. Ambos eram homens de crise vivendo numa época de crise. Apesar de tanto parentesco ideológico existencial, pouco ou quase nada se falou da influência de Antero sobre Unamuno e do paralelismo de seus escritos. Ambos, também, perderam a fé, quando estudantes universitários, mas jamais conseguiram se livrar da ideia de Deus recebida na infância. Daí que a sua obra literária será de cunho transcendente, religioso e ar é onde reside a origem do sentimento trágico na vida de ambos vates. Antero não abandona a ideia de santidade e Unamuno insiste constantemente na imortalidade do homem de came e osso. The distribution of coral reef biodiversity is regulated by a series of natural variables and human induced factors such as depth, habitat availability, spatial variation, and management policies. However, spatial distribution patterns of coral reefs biodiversity are still scare on several areas, such as Southwestern Atlantic Ocean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) even though better management strategies worldwide could be supported by species distribution data. A total of 84 reefs spatially distributed around the MPA Costa dos Corais (Northeastern Brazil) and ranging from 1 to 30 m depth were sampled during the present study. The survey of biological data was obtained through SCUBA diving using a 20 m belt transect methodology. Our study is the first one to demonstrated biodiversity spatial distribution of the largest Brazilian coastal MPA Costa dos Corais biodiversity and the importance of zoning as a major coral reef conservation strategy in Brazil, additionally shown how depth influence fish and coral biodiversity. Hence, management and zoning strategies have influenced the structure of coral reef communities with a series of different ecological effects highlighting the importance of those strategies for Southwestern Atlantic Ocean MPAs.

Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) generates unique data sets that have the potential to identify and quantify trends in ecological processes that may be difficult to detect at lower temporal resolutions. Even though many LTER sites are within protected areas, they do not necessarily produce data that are well aligned with the objectives of the institutions and individuals who manage and govern these sites. There are several potential reasons for this, including: i) insufficient information provided by the LTER on socio-ecological variables of relevance to management; ii) a mismatch between the spatial scale of the data collected by the LTER and the scale of data needed to inform management decisions; iii) a lack of inclusion of policy-makers in crucial steps of LTER project implementation, including experimental design and analysis, and; iv) an absence or insufficiency of formal or informal mechanisms for incorporating LTER data into environmental decision-making and protected area governance. Using examples from recently implemented LTER in the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protected Area (known as the PELD-CCAL), we reflect on how some of these challenges can be addressed and provide general recommendations for increasing the conservation management and policy relevance of LTER projects in Brazil.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-03-01 A 10-year old male dog was examined due to a buphthalmia in the left eye and a nodule in the two testicles. Due to the limited resources of the owner and loss of visual acuity of the patient, the enucleation and castration were chosen as treatment. Microscopic analysis of the testicular tissue revealed neoplastic germ cells. Morphologically, neoplastic cells were characterized by distinct cell borders, scarce and eosinophilic cytoplasm, large round nucleus, with thick chromatin and a prominent nucleolus. Binucleated and multinucleated neoplastic cells were also frequently observed. In 10 high power fields (400x), 62 typical and atypical mitosis were counted. Similar neoplastic cells were identified within the vessels of the retina, sclera and in the sub-epithelial conjunctive tissue of the eyelid. The neoplastic cells observed in the testicle and in the eye were positive for PAS. By immunochemistry technique was identified an intense immunostaining of the neoplastic cells for Vimentin and Ki-67 in both testicular and ocular tissue. While, discrete immunoreactivity was identified to c-KIT from the neoplastic cells in both organs. Based on morphological, histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis, it was possible to characterize the ocular lesion as seminoma metastasis. El fenómeno del suicidio es una problemática a nivel mundial que se ha venido incrementando en la última década con mayor prevalencia en la población adolescente y joven, generando impacto en diferentes contextos como el familiar, social, económico, educativo, entre otros. Es por ello que esta revisión sistemática se enfoca en identificar los factores psicosociales asociados a la conducta suicida en adolescentes y jóvenes, en publicaciones realizadas a nivel mundial; permitiendo reconocer dentro de estos estudios la coincidencia de diferentes aspectos, dentro de los cuales se resaltan los siguientes factores psicosociales: Familia, exposición a diversas formas de violencia, conductas de riesgo, psicopatología y estados emocionales negativos. La revisión bibliográfica realizada, permite confirmar la dinámica multifactorial de los intentos de suicidio y los suicidios consumados. Es de esta manera que el suicidio además de ser un fenómeno complejo de abordar, es igualmente compleja su predictibilidad. No con esto se quiere decir que, no es posible desarrollar estrategias que permitan advertir o prevenir de manera oportuna la conducta. Por el contrario, los hallazgos invitan a tener una mirada ecológica del fenómeno, para así mismo apuntar desde distintos ángulos a contrarrestar los factores de riesgo que predisponen dicha conducta. The phenomenon of suicide is a worldwide problem that has been increasing in the last decade with greater prevalence in the adolescent and young population, generating impact in different contexts such as family, social, economic, educational, among others. For this reason, this systematic review focuses on identifying psychosocial factors associated with suicidal behavior in adolescents and young people, in publications published worldwide, allowing us to recognize within these studies the coincidence of different aspects, among which the following psychosocial factors stand out: family, exposure to various forms of violence, risk behaviors, psychopathology and negative emotional states. The bibliographic review carried out confirms the multifactorial dynamics of suicide attempts and completed suicides. Thus, suicide is not only a complex phenomenon to deal with, but its predictability is equally complex. This is not to say that it is not possible to develop strategies to warn or prevent the behavior in a timely manner. On the contrary, the findings invite us to take an ecological view of the phenomenon, in order to counteract the risk factors that predispose to such behavior from different angles.

ResumoAvaliar os resultados do tratamento de 31 tumores de células gigantes da bainha do tendão da mão encontrados entre 2006 e 2015.Entre fevereiro de 2006 e novembro de 2015, um grupo de pacientes foi selecionado para avaliação retrospectiva, na qual foram estudados e avaliados 31 prontuários de pacientes submetidos a procedimento cirúrgico devido a tumor de células gigantes da bainha do tendão dos dedos da mão. O tratamento preconizado foi a excisão completa do tumor com a preservação das estruturas adjacentes. A confirmação diagnóstica foi feita pelo exame anatomopatológico. Foi avaliada a evolução do tratamento após a cirurgia, principalmente no tocante ao índice de recidivas dos tumores.Dos 31 pacientes da amostra, houve predomínio do sexo feminino e da etnia branca. O tumor acometeu principalmente indivíduos entre 30 e 50 anos. O lado mais acometido foi o esquerdo, e a maioria dos tumores estava na face flexora. Houve predominância dos dedos radiais, juntamente com sua extremidade distal. Esses pacientes têm sido acompanhados em intervalos regulares em ambulatório. Dos 27 pacientes reavaliados, foram identificados 3 casos de recidiva tumoral.Uma técnica cirúrgica adequada é essencial para a prevenção de recidivas do TCGBT. Os resultados obtidos na pesquisa estão em concordância com a literatura atual.

The OI 557.7 nm green line has been measured in the Martian dayglow for the first time with the UVIS visible-ultraviolet spectrograph on board ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter (Gérard et al., 2020). The first observations started in April 2019 in a special mode where the spacecraft is tilted to observe the limb with the UVIS nadir channel (Vandaele et al., 2015, Patel et al., 2017). The instrument detected the presence of bright green dayglow emission on every of those observations. The main peak altitude is located near 80 km, and its intensity varies as a result of the changing distance from sun, the local time and latitude of the observations. A second, less pronounced, emission peak is observed near 110 km. Photochemical model simulations (Gkouvelis et al., 2018) used the MCD density distribution (Forget et al., 1999) have been made to understand the sources of this airglow emission. It is able to reproduce the altitude and the brightness of the airglow layer. It indicates that the green line dayglow on Mars is essentially produced by photodissociation of CO2 molecules by solar far ultraviolet radiation (Fox & Dalgarno, 1979). A fraction of the oxygen atoms is formed in the 1S metastable state that produces the green emission. In this presentation, we describe additional dayside observations obtained since December 2019. For this purpose, the spacecraft has been used in a special mode where it is re-oriented so that the UVIS channel observed the sunlit limb (Lopez-Valverde et al., 2018). We analyse the observed limb profile variations and the changing altitude of the peak emission resulting from the variations of the pressure levels in the mesosphere (Gkouvelis et al., 2020). The measured intensities are compared with model calculations of the O(1S) density in the conditions of the observations. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-09-01 Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the long-term alendronate administration on bone healing in defects created in rat calvarias. Materials and methods: Female Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 2 groups: Control (CTL): animals received saline solution once a week; and Alendronate (ALD): rats underwent alendronate treatment (1 mg/kg/weekly). After 120 days from the commencement of treatment, a critical size defect was created in all animals, and 10 animals from each group were sacrificed at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45 and 60-days after the defect creation. On the day of sacrifice, urine and blood samples were collected for determination of the serum levels of bone resorption and formation markers by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, and the urinary concentration of deoxypyridinoline. Bone mineral density (BMD) in the femurs, descriptive histology, tartrate-resistant acid-phosphatase staining and immunohistochemical analyzes were assessed in the calvaria. Results: Alendronate group showed increased BMD compared to the test group. The concentration of C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen and deoxypyridinoline decreased significantly, and the concentration of aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type 1 and osteocalcin were significant lower in the alendronate group. Immunohistochemical analysis showed significant downregulation in the inducible nitric oxide synthase, runt-related transcription factor-2, cathepsin-K and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand expression in the alendronate group. Vascular endothelial growth factor and osteopontin were upregulated in the later periods of alendronate group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that long-term treatment with alendronate did not compromise the repair processing of critical size defects in rat. Holtzman rats were randomly divided into two groups: Control — animals fed a standard diet and test — animals fed a diet with 90% Mg deficiency. After 60 days on the diets, all animals received ligature on the lower left first molars to induce PD. Animals were euthanized after 30 days following ligature placement. Blood and urine were collected for determination of serum concentrations of Mg, calcium, osteocalcin (OCN), alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone (PTH) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the urinary concentration of deoxypyridinoline (DPD). Systemic bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume and architectural bone parameters were evaluated by micro-CT in L4 lumbar vertebrae and mandible. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), CD86, CD80, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, vascular endothelial growth factor, OCN and osteopontin were investigated. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction was employed to assess mRNA expression of receptor-activator of nuclear factor-kB ligand, osteoprotegerin (OPG) and interleukin (IL)-6. Mg deficiency was associated with higher concentrations of PTH and DPD, and significant decrease on both systemic and mandibular BMD, as well as greater severity of alveolar and trabecular bone loss. Significant increase in osteoclasts was observed in the test group with PD. IHC analysis showed significant increase in the expression of iNOS and decreased expression of OCN and RUNX2. Increased IL-6 mRNA and decreased OPG mRNA expressions were evidenced in the test group with PD. Mg deficiency caused systemic effects indicative of altered bone metabolism in the vertebrae and affected both immune and stromal cells, aggravating inflammatory bone resorption in the ligature-induced model of periodontitis. Em um cenário em constante transição, um dos desafios vividos, atualmente, no âmbito educacional, é o que envolve o planejamento e a construção de modelos de design instrucional compatíveis às emergentes necessidades de aprendizagem do aluno em qualquer nível de formação, seja básico, seja superior. Assim, com o intuito de experimentar um ambiente em que se tem a implementação de princípios da educação híbrida, este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar um estudo de caso em que se planejou e aplicou uma proposta de design instrucional, com ênfase na utilização de inovações e aplicações tecnológicas como apoio a aulas presenciais, para a disciplina de Comunicação e Expressão em um curso superior tecnológico público.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a epidemiologia e os resultados cirurgicos do tratamento das fraturas-luxacoes de cotovelo, incluindo apenas os casos que associam a luxacao com a fratura do processo coronoide e da cabeca do radio (triade terrivel). METODO: Foram avaliados 19 pacientes, sendo 12 do genero masculino e sete do genero feminino. Foi feita uma analise dos prontuarios para coleta de dados a respeito do mecanismo do trauma, padrao das fraturas, tempo para a cirurgia e tipo de procedimento realizado. Foi realizada a avaliacao clinica para mensuracao dos arcos de movimento do cotovelo e aplicacao do questionario MEPS. RESULTADOS: O mecanismo de trauma mais comum em nossa casuistica foi a queda de altura (12 pacientes). Todos os pacientes foram submetidos a tratamento cirurgico sendo que o tempo medio entre a data do trauma e a cirurgia foi de 16,1 dias. O seguimento medio foi de 50,3 meses. Foram obtidos arcos de flexo-extensao media de 112° e pronossupinacao de 127,9°. A media do questionario MEPS foi de 86 pontos, sendo encontrados resultados excelentes e bons em 15 dos pacientes (79%). O tempo para a cirurgia, arco de flexoextensao final maior que 100° e a contratura em flexao menor que 30° se mostraram estatisticamente significantes para o bom resultado clinico final. Cinco pacientes tiveram complicacoes, sendo tres em relacao a nervos perifericos, uma pseudoartrose e uma instabilidade recorrente. CONCLUSAO: Apesar da gravidade da lesao encontrada na triade terrivel do cotovelo, a maioria dos pacientes avaliados obteve um cotovelo estavel com bons resultados clinicos. Os fatores que levam a melhores resultados clinicos sao: cirurgia antes de 14 dias de lesao, arco de flexo-extensao maior que 100° e contratura em flexao menor que 30°.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-04-01 Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) is considered the most important toxic plant affecting livestock farming in Brazil. This study describes an outbreak of spontaneous poisoning by P. marcgravii in sheep. Forty-nine sheep died while showing clinical signs of sudden death after having access to the plant. During the necropsy, P. marcgravii leaves were observed in the rumens of the animals. Histopathological analysis demonstrated hydropic degeneration of the kidneys. Monofluoracetate concentration obtained in Palicourea samples was 0.53% (5.3 μg/mg). These findings collectively indicate that the affected animals died from poisoning due to P. marcgravii.
