An efficient source of hydrated electrons generated by visible light has the potential to have a major impact on solar homogeneous catalysis. Diamond has potentially a high capability of emitting hydrated electrons, but only using ultraviolet light (lambda<225 nm). In this work, we demonstrate the efficient absorption of visible light by nanocomposites consisting of detonation nanodiamonds and gold nanoparticles (AuNP@DNDs), which subsequently emit electrons into the aqueous environment in which they are suspended. This has been done by exciting the AuNP@DND with visible laser light and monitoring the appearance and intensity of the transient absorption of hydrated electrons centered at around 720 nm. We suggest that this mechanism is made possible by the plasmonic enhancement of visible absorption by sp2-hybridized islands on the DND surface. Optimization of this process could lead to important breakthroughs in solar photocatalysis of energy-intensive reactions such as N2 and CO2 reduction as well as providing a non-toxic source of hydrated electrons for applications in wastewater management and nanomedicine.

Rising market power threatens competition and decreases consumers' welfare. To date, a few works have shown how global firm-level markups increase, but there is scant evidence about the channels of such a change. This study investigates the causal impact of takeovers on markups and related firm-level outcomes on European manufacturing in 2007- 2021. Interestingly, findings suggest that takeovers aimed at vertical integration strategies are procompetitive because they result in lower markups (0.7%) and more sales (2.9%). The effects are higher as time passes from the takeover event, and they increase with the parents' number of already integrated subsidiaries. Notably, we do not find a significant impact on markups in horizontal integration strategies after we control for cherry-picking by acquirers. Eventually, we emphasize that our results on vertical takeovers point to strategies aimed at eliminating double profit margins on the input markets; thus, lower markups increase sales, spreading fixed costs and benefiting from economies of scale. Several checks on methods and sample composition effects confirm our central tenets. Finally, we reconnect with the debate initiated by the U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines (2020; 2023), where the presumption of harm after vertical deals has been softened, thus considering procompetitive effects, but the discussion of potential foreclosure risks has been expanded.

Rare diseases present unique challenges in healthcare, often suffering from delayed diagnosis and fragmented information landscapes. The scarcity of reliable knowledge in these conditions poses a distinct challenge for Large Language Models (LLMs) in supporting clinical management and delivering precise patient information underscoring the need for focused training on these 'zebra' cases. We present Zebra-Llama, a specialized context-aware language model with high precision Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) capability, focusing on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) as our case study. EDS, affecting 1 in 5,000 individuals, exemplifies the complexities of rare diseases with its diverse symptoms, multiple subtypes, and evolving diagnostic criteria. By implementing a novel context-aware fine-tuning methodology trained on questions derived from medical literature, patient experiences, and clinical resources, along with expertly curated responses, Zebra-Llama demonstrates unprecedented capabilities in handling EDS-related queries. On a test set of real-world questions collected from EDS patients and clinicians, medical experts evaluated the responses generated by both models, revealing Zebra-Llama's substantial improvements over base model (Llama 3.1-8B-Instruct) in thoroughness (77.5% vs. 70.1%), accuracy (83.0% vs. 78.8%), clarity (74.7% vs. 72.0%) and citation reliability (70.6% vs. 52.3%). Released as an open-source resource, Zebra-Llama not only provides more accessible and reliable EDS information but also establishes a framework for developing specialized AI solutions for other rare conditions. X-ray Multi-Projection Imaging (XMPI) is an emerging technology that allows for the acquisition of millions of 3D images per second in samples opaque to visible light. This breakthrough capability enables volumetric observation of fast stochastic phenomena, which were inaccessible due to the lack of a volumetric X-ray imaging probe with kHz to MHz repetition rate. These include phenomena of industrial and societal relevance such as fractures in solids, propagation of shock waves, laser-based 3D printing, or even fast processes in the biological domain. Indeed, the speed of traditional tomography is limited by the shear forces caused by rotation, to a maximum of 1000 Hz in state-of-the-art tomography. Moreover, the shear forces can disturb the phenomena in observation, in particular with soft samples or sensitive phenomena such as fluid dynamics. XMPI is based on splitting an X-ray beam to generate multiple simultaneous views of the sample, therefore eliminating the need for rotation. The achievable performances depend on the characteristics of the X-ray source, the detection system, and the X-ray optics used to generate the multiple views. The increase in power density of the X-ray sources around the world now enables 3D imaging with sampling speeds in the kilohertz range at synchrotrons and megahertz range at X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs). Fast detection systems are already available, and 2D MHz imaging was already demonstrated at synchrotron and XFEL. In this work, we explore the properties of X-ray splitter optics and XMPI schemes that are compatible with synchrotron insertion devices and XFEL X-ray beams. We describe two possible schemes designed to permit large samples and complex sample environments. X-ray multi-projection imaging (XMPI) provides rotation-free 3D movies of optically opaque samples. The absence of rotation enables superior imaging speed and preserves fragile sample dynamics by avoiding the shear forces introduced by conventional rotary tomography. Here, we present our XMPI observations at the ID19 beamline (ESRF, France) of 3D dynamics in melted aluminum with 1000 frames per second and 8 $\mu$m resolution per projection using the full dynamical range of our detectors. Since XMPI is a method under development, we also provide different tests for the instrumentation of up to 3000 frames per second. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify, as far as it is possible, the overall picture of experimental results in the field of non-conventional phenomena in nuclear matter published in scientific literature, accumulated in the last decades and still missing a widely accepted interpretation. While completeness of the collection of the experiments is not among the aims of the effort, focus is put on adopting a more comprehensive and integral approach through the analysis of the different experimental layouts and the different results, searching for common features and analogous factual outcomes in order to obtain a consistent reading of a lot of experimental evidences that appear, until now, lacking a classification in a logic catalogue which might be compared to a sort of building and not to a collection of single stones. Particular attention is put on the issue of reproducibility of experiments and on the reasons why such a limitation is a frequent characteristic of many experimental activities reported in published papers. This approach is innovative as compared with those already available in the scientific literature. In a synoptical table a comprehensive classification is given of the twenty experiments examined in terms of type of evidences that are ascertained by the experimenters in their published papers but are unexpected according to well established physical theories. In this paper we give a contribution to the taxonomy of physical theories. We provide here a thorough description of the axiomatic foundations of the most relevant physical theories, Mechanics, Special Relativity, General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics. We investigate the properties of the fermionic Fulling-Rindler vacuum for a massive Dirac field in a general number of spatial dimensions. As important local characteristics, the fermionic condensate and the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor are evaluated. The renormalization is reduced to the subtraction of the corresponding expectation values for the Minkowski vacuum. It is shown that the fermion condensate vanishes for a massless field and is negative for nonzero mass. Unlike the case of scalar fields, the fermionic vacuum stresses are isotropic for general case of massive fields. The energy density and the pressures are negative. For a massless field the corresponding spectral distributions exhibit thermal properties with the standard Unruh temperature. However, the density-of-states factor is not Planckian for general number of spatial dimensions. Another interesting feature is that the thermal distribution is of the Bose-Einstein type in even number of spatial dimensions. This feature has been observed previously in the response of a particle detector uniformly accelerating through the Minkowski vacuum. In an even number of space dimensions the fermion condensate and the mean energy-momentum tensor coincide for the fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. Defects in the lattice are of primal importance to tune graphene chemical, thermal and electronic properties. Electron-beam irradiation is an easy method to induce defects in graphene following pre-designed patterns, but no systematic study of the time evolution of the resulting defects is available. In this paper, the change over time of defected sites created in graphene with low-energy ($\leq 20$ keV) electron irradiation is studied both experimentally via micro-Raman spectroscopy for a period of $6\times 10^3$ hours and through molecular dynamics simulations. During the first 10 h, the structural defects are stable at the highest density value. Subsequently, the crystal partially reconstructs, eventually reaching a stable, less defected condition after more than one month. The simulations allow the rationalization of the processes at the atomic level and confirm that the irradiation induces composite clusters of defects of different nature rather than well-defined nanoholes as in the case of high-energy electrons. The presented results identify the timescale of the defects stability, thus establishing the operability timespan of engineerable defect-rich graphene devices with applications in nanoelectronics. Moreover, long-lasting chemical reactivity of the defective graphene is pointed out. X-ray time-resolved tomography is one of the most popular X-ray techniques to probe dynamics in three dimensions (3D). Recent developments in time-resolved tomography opened the possibility of recording kilohertz-rate 3D movies. However, tomography requires rotating the sample with respect to the X-ray beam, which prevents characterization of faster structural dynamics. Here, we present megahertz (MHz) X-ray multi-projection imaging (MHz-XMPI), a technique capable of recording volumetric information at MHz rates and micrometer resolution without scanning the sample. We achieved this by harnessing the unique megahertz pulse structure and intensity of the European X-ray Free-electron Laser with a combination of novel detection and reconstruction approaches that do not require sample rotations. Our approach enables generating multiple X-ray probes that simultaneously record several angular projections for each pulse in the megahertz pulse burst. We provide a proof-of-concept demonstration of the MHz-XMPI technique's capability to probe 4D (3D+time) information on stochastic phenomena and non-reproducible processes three orders of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art time-resolved X-ray tomography, by generating 3D movies of binary droplet collisions. We anticipate that MHz-XMPI will enable in-situ and operando studies that were impossible before, either due to the lack of temporal resolution or because the systems were opaque (such as for MHz imaging based on optical microscopy).

Ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation is a promising method for the production of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. A large number of studies have been made in investigating the underlying ultrasound exfoliation mechanisms. However, due to the experimental challenges for capturing the highly transient and dynamic phenomena in real-time at sub-microsecond time and micrometer length scales simultaneously, most theories reported to date still remain elusive. Here, using the ultra-short X-ray Free Electron Laser pulses (~25ps) with a unique pulse train structure, we applied MHz X-ray Microscopy and machine-learning technique to reveal unambiguously the full cycles of the ultrasound cavitation and graphite layer exfoliation dynamics with sub-microsecond and micrometer resolution. Cyclic fatigue shock wave impacts produced by ultrasound cloud implosion were identified as the dominant mechanism to deflect and exfoliate graphite layers mechanically. For the graphite flakes, exfoliation rate as high as ~5 angstroms per shock wave impact was observed. For the HOPG graphite, the highest exfoliation rate was ~0.15 angstroms per impact. These new findings are scientifically and technologically important for developing industrial upscaling strategies for ultrasonic exfoliation of 2D materials.

We present an experimental study on the etching of detonation nanodiamond (DND) seeds during typical microwave chemical vapor deposition (MWCVD) conditions leading to ultra-thin diamond film formation, which is fundamental for many technological applications. The temporal evolution of the surface density of seeds on Si(100) substrate has been assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resulting kinetics have been explained in the framework of a model based on the effect of particle size, according to the Young-Laplace equation, on both chemical potential of carbon atoms in DND and activation energy of reaction. We found that seeds with size smaller than a critical radius, r*, are etched away while those greater than r* can grow. The X-ray microscopy technique at the European X-ray free-electron laser (EuXFEL), operating at a MHz repetition rate, provides superior contrast and spatial-temporal resolution compared to typical microscopy techniques at other X-ray sources. In both online visualization and offline data analysis for microscopy experiments, baseline normalization is essential for further processing steps such as phase retrieval and modal decomposition. In addition, access to normalized projections during data acquisition can play an important role in decision-making and improve the quality of the data. However, the stochastic nature of XFEL sources hinders the use of existing flat-flied normalization methods during MHz X-ray microscopy experiments. Here, we present an online dynamic flat-field correction method based on principal component analysis of dynamically evolving flat-field images. At modern X-ray sources, such as synchrotrons and X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs), it is important to measure the absolute value of the photon energy directly. Here, a method for absolute spectral metrology is presented. A photon energy estimation method based on the spectral measurements and rocking of diffracting crystals is presented. The photon energy of SASE1 channel of the European XFEL was measured, and the benefits and applications of the precise photon energy evaluation are discussed.
