Background: Ultrasound scanning presently forms an integral part of antenatal care around the globe. It is a common investigative tool in most public and private health facilities in developing countries. Routine obstetric ultrasound has been one of the most important advances in antenatal care worldwide. It is also useful in the early detection and monitoring of the conditions that give rise to fetal and maternal compromise and has become an indispensable adjunct to the management efforts of practitioners in this regard. Therefore, utilization of this innovation by pregnant mothers is paramount toward good outcome. Objective: The objective is to determine the factors affecting utilization of ultrasound by pregnant mothers attending antenatal care in Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive was used to carry out the study among 200 pregnant mothers selected through multistage sampling technique. This study was conducted over a period of 6 months from November 6, 2017, to May 6, 2018, after approval was given by the ethical committee of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria. A structured interviewer-administered, validated questionnaire was administered to each participant to ascertain the factors affecting utilization of obstetric ultrasound by pregnant women in Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 22. Results: The data obtained from the questionnaire were scored for proper evaluation. Furthermore, all collected data were carefully tallied, various frequencies, ranges, and mean (standard deviation) were determined. Most (29.5%) of the respondents aged 20–24 years, majority (95.5%) were homemakers that are not gainfully employed. Majority of the respondents were Hausa (94.5) and Muslims (96.5%). The findings of this study have shown that educational status, husband occupation, and knowledge affect the utilization of ultrasound by respondents. Conclusion: The common factors that affect the utilization of obstetric scan in Zaria were knowledge, education background, and husband occupation. Attitude, age, and the occupation of the respondents do not affect the utilization of obstetrics scan in Zaria.

- Abstract
The Trypanosoma bruceiis the causative agent of African trypanosomiasis, a disease that affects both humans and animals. Chemotherapy which forms the major means of control for the disease has several shortcomings such as limited efficacy and adverse side effects amongst others. Thus, motivating the search for better therapies. In this study, extracts of some tropical plants including the Acacia nilotica, Bombax buonopozenseand Khaya senegalensiswere evaluated for therapeutic and prophylactic potential in mouse model of experimental trypanosomiasis. Both diminazene aceturate and isometamidium chloride were included as reference drugs. Results showed that T. bruceicaused an elevation in rat plasma indirect bilirubin and a reduction in rat plasma albumin and total protein which suggest mild hepatic dysfunction due to experimental infection. Data also revealed that the plant extracts significantly reduced the rat parasite burden both in the prophylaxis and therapeutic treatment groups when compared with the negative drug control. The infection and treatments had no adverse effect on the rat organ and body weights. The infection did not alter the activity of rat plasma ALT, AST and ALP compared with the administered extracts of A. niloticaand B. buonopozense. Further, the plant extracts ameliorated some trypanosomiasis-induced pathologies in treated rats compared with negative drug control. Taken together, findings do not only lend credence to the folkloric use of these plants for medicinal purposes but also suggest these plant extracts have potential to serve as alternative source of anti-parasitic agents particularly for the control of trypanosomiasis.

- Abstract
The study examined the Socio-economic factors affecting adoption of improved cassava varieties among farmers in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A 4-stage sampling technique was used to elicit information from 150 respondents through structure questionnaire and interview schedule. Both judgmental and simple random sampling procedure was adopted in the study. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools such as frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Probit model. Majority of the respondents were males (56.0%), Married (72.0%) and members of cooperative movement (54.0%). Majority (82.7%) were having primary, secondary or tertiary level of education with average monthly income of N62,073.33k. The clienteles were involved in cassava production on part time basis (58.7%). Majority of the respondents were aware of TMS 92/0057 95.3%), TME419 (67.3%) and NR8083 (65.3%) but adopted TMS419 (32.0%), TMS96/0002 (30.0%) and NR8083 (29.3%) varieties mostly. The mean age of the respondents is 49 years, average farming experience of 26 years and mean land areas under cultivation of 3.0 Acres respectively. The determinant factors of adoption of improved cassava varieties are; educational level, age, sex, complexity of the varieties, adaptability to innovation to the socio cultural system of the clienteles and compatibility of the varieties. The perceived measures for adoption of improved cassava varieties are provision of inputs, subsidy and labor, market outlets as well as loan facilities to the clienteles among others. It was recommended that, favorable measures of adoption of improved cassava varieties such as provision of farm inputs 76.0%, agricultural labor subsidy 66.0% and provision of loan facilities/market outlets for cassava( 53.3% should be enhanced and the positive determinant factors of adoption of improved cassava varieties among the respondents. adaptability and appropriateness of the technology. Compatibility(X14) has positive and significant relationship at 5% levels for the improved varieties showing that the compatibility of the innovation increases the adoption of the innovation when the technology is similar and agreed with the existing culture it will hasten the adoption of such technology. It is recommended that extension agents must try to transfer simple innovations to rural farmers rather than complex innovations. Also, agricultural extensions must adopt to changes taking place in rural setting and provide answers to the problems facing the rural populace.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the twelfth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of worldwide cancer-related death. Chronic hepatitis B infection, caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and exposure to aflatoxins is fundamental in the formation of HCC in developing countries. This review of scientific publications aims to establish the detrimental effects of aflatoxin-contaminated foods and highlights the correlation between aflatoxin and hepatitis B viral-associated hepatocellular carcinoma. Research has shown a significant increase in the occurrence of HCC in HBV-infected individuals exposed to fungal toxins. HBV demonstrates the ability to integrate and bind to p53 protein in the host DNA and propagate hepatocyte vulnerability through carcinogenic aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) damage. Although there has been clear evidence about the synergistic interaction of exposure to AFB1 and HBV infection in the induction of HCC, other literature has shown otherwise, mainly because incomplete and vague findings and hypotheses were made in regions where AFB1 and HBV pose a public health risk. Vaccination against hepatitis B and measures such as robust food safety systems to avoid hepatotoxicity and hepatocellular carcinogenesis induced by AFB1 is the most effective methods in the prevention of HCC induced by HBV and AFB.

- Abstract
The study examined the information needs of farmers on post-harvest storage of tomato in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A total of one hundred and 120 tomato farmers were interviewed for the purpose of eliciting information through a 4-stage sampling procedure. Majority (75.0%) of the respondents were males (90.0%), married (89.2%), Muslims (95.9%) with Islamic education (50.0%). The respondents’ average (x ): household size is 9 persons, farm size of 1.6ha, monthly income of N30,916.67 and age of 41.6 years. Primary occupation of the majority is farming (96.7%) with mean farming experience of 13 years. Main source of labor is family labor (86.7%). Greater proportions source their funds through personal savings (77.5%). Land ownership is through inheritance (66.7%) and no extension service involvement (97.5%). The most needed information on post-harvest storage is lack of current information, techniques for record keeping and sustainable market (100.0%, x = 3.50), respectively. They were only aware of post-harvest storage like basket cooling (91.7%), sorting and grading (80.8%) and refrigeration storage (59.2%) among others while severe constraints were: lack of capital for post-harvest activities, government policy and infrastructure (99.2%, x = 3.78). The result of the Pearson Correlation showed positive relationship with educational level, household size, average monthly income and farming experience. The research recommended the recruitment of more competent extension officers for more farmers’ contact, structured and focused government policies on tomato post-harvest practices and periodic training of farmers.

- Abstract
Reducing post-harvest losses (PHL) offers a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable way to promote food and nutrition safety than focusing solely on increased productivity. This study assessed the use and effectiveness of NSPRI disseminated storage technologies among grain crop farmers. Specifically, it identified the NSPRI storage technologies available to grain crops farmers; examined the availability of the NSPRI technologies; examined the extent of use of the technologies; assessed farmers’ perception of the effectiveness of the technologies; and identified constraints to the use of the technologies. A two-stage random sampling procedure was used to select 130 farmers on whom questionnaire was administered. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression and Pearson’s product moment correlation. The extent of use of storage technologies was low (MS = 1.16) though farmers used fumigant most (MS = 1.55). The farmers perceived that NSPRI dust was the most effective among the disseminated technologies. Availability (MS = 2.68) and lack of technical know-how (MS = 2.66) were the major constraints to the use of the technologies. At P

It can confer a protection factor of up to approximately 13.4 in some individuals. However, the protection eumelanin affords is not absolute and, further, the susceptibility of human skin to the harmful effects of UV radiation is more complex than skin pigmentation alone. Objective: Our survey explored the lifetime prevalence of sunburn in people of African Ancestry based in the UK (Black African or Black Caribbean). Results: A significant number of respondents, 52.2% (n=222), reported a history of sunburn. Interestingly, there was a significant increase in frequency of sunburn in those with a lighter skin tone (self-classified from dark, medium and light – 47.3%, 53.5% and 71.4%, respectively). In total 69% reported that the episode of sunburn occurred when they were not using sunscreen, and another 10% could not recall whether sunscreen was used. A large proportion of respondents (59%) indicated that they had been sunburnt while away from the UK in hot/sunny climates, raising the question of whether intermittent sun exposure at high UV indices is a key factor in sunburn risk for those living in temperate climates. Conclusion: Our findings do not support the hypothesis of a simplistic relationship between skin colour and sun sensitivity and encourage us to re-examine this relationship and its implications for public health promotion. It also adds to a body of evidence revealing the need for more up-to-date and appropriate systems to assess the risk UV radiation poses to diverse populations. Keywords: sunburn, UV radiation, skin of colour

In general, family planning uptake promotes healthy living among couples and their children, in addition to aiding national development. This study was a secondary analysis of data collected from two nationally representative data - 2015 and 2018 National Nutrition and Health Surveys (NNHS) - aimed at measuring the uptake of modern and traditional contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The data were analysed by presenting differentials in prevalence of modern and traditional contraceptives between 2015 and 2018. The results showed that during the periods modern contraceptive uptake in Nigeria ranged between 10% and 17%. By contrast, the prevalence of the traditional methods was 8.3% and 10.0%. Within four years (2015-2018), the average national modern contraceptive uptake among women increased by 7%, while the traditional contraceptive uptake reduced by 2%. The uptake of both modern and traditional contraceptive methods varied by ages group of women, geo-political regions, and State of residence. We conclude that the uptake of modern contraception is below expectation in all regions in Nigeria. The uptake is worse in the northern regions as compared to the southern regions. Government needs to invest more to increase access to and utilization of modern contraceptive methods.

The chemical constituents of weighed, air-dried leaf samples of a native Nigerian plant, Drynaria laurentii, were examined. The bioactivity of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the plants were tested against ten (10) strains of bacteria and fungi, and their antioxidant activities and antimicrobial properties were studied. Ethyl acetate extract of Drynaria laurentii leaves exhibited 2,2-diphenyl-1-hydrazine (DPPH) radical scavenging property with Inhibition Concentration at 50% (IC50) of 298.912 μg/mL while hexane and methanol extracts of the plant showed no significant antioxidant activity. From the antimicrobial study, the methanol extract of the plant inhibited the growth of all the test organisms at all concentrations while the n-hexane extract specifically inhibited the growth of the test bacteria at 200-25 mg/mL and have low inhibitory effects on all the test fungi. Meanwhile, the ethyl acetate extract inhibited the growth of all the test bacteria from a range of 200–12.5 mg/mL and all the test fungi at the range 200-25 mg/mL. However, some bacteria (6.25 mg/mL) and fungi (12.5-6.25 mg/mL) displayed resistance to the ethyl acetate extract of the plant. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) characterisation of n-hexane leaf extract of D. laurentii afforded nineteen (19) compounds with heptadecanal constituting 15.64% as the most abundant constituent of the extract. Ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the plant afforded eighteen (18) and seventeen (17) compounds with γ-sitosterol (14.34%) and clionasterol (15.32%) as the abundant constituents in both extracts respectively.

- Abstract
Background: Optic Nerve diameter (OND) is a surrogate marker for raised intracranial pressure. It is an established fact that obstetric patients with preeclampsia do have increased optic nerve diameter compared with normotensives patients. High resolution B-mode Ocular Ultrasonography is increasingly advocated as a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating the optic nerve diameter due to its noninvasive nature, low cost, portability, dynamic real-time assessment and rapid performance. This study aims to determine the clinical usefulness of optic nerve diameter findings obtained with B-mode ultrasound in preeclamptic patients. Methodology: This double-blinded, analytical cross-sectional study was carried out at the Department of Radiology, University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Complex, (UNIMEDTHC), Ondo State, Nigeria and consisted of 95 preeclamptic and 95 normotensives aged matched pregnant women. The optic nerve diameter was measured by the radiologist using a high frequency linear ultrasound probe (7.5-12MHz). Fundoscopy was done by an ophthalmologist who was blinded to the optic nerve diameter measurements. Results: The optic nerve diameter was higher in preeclamptic compared to controls with a mean of 6.72 ± 0.83mm and 4.30 ± 0.69mm respectively with p value 5.6mm. Conclusion: Ocular ultrasound is an effective screening tool for prediction of the presence of raised intracranial pressure in preeclamptic.

Water is very essential for the survival of all living things both plants and animals depend on the availability of water. The aim of this work is to determine the physicochemical parameters and heavy metals content of water samples from domestic and Kaduna River in Kaduna metropolis. Standard method were used for physicochemical parameters and atomic absorption spectrophotometer were used for heavy metals of the water samples. The range of temperature (25.1±0.78°C and 27.6±0.21°C), pH value (6.30±0.29 and 8.46±0.06), turbidity (5.05±0.07m and 9.94±0.08m), the respective water conductivity were 5.95±0.49µS/cm and 98.0±2.82µS/cm, the TDS (4.15±0.35mg/l and 0.71±0.01mg/l), DO content recorded (1.18±0.01mg/l and 8.55±0.12mg/l), COD value were 1.08±0.11mg/l and 6.81±0.11mg/l and BOD (1.08±0.11mg/l and 6.81±0.11 mg/l) domestic and Kaduna River. In heavy metals, copper and cobalt concentrations were higher in domestic and Kaduna River water. The concentration of Zinc in domestic water (0.090±0.044ppm) was higher than that observed in Kaduna River (0.027±0.004ppm). Lead were 0.264±0.011ppm and 0.129±0.07ppm, Cadmium were 0.331±0.013ppm and 0.329±0.019ppm, respectively. The results showed that the water analyzed from domestic and Kaduna River water were within limit except chemical oxygen demand which was below, lead, cadmium and cobalt were above. Background: H5N1 avian influenza virus is influenza-A virus subtype that is highly contagious and fatal among birds and humans. Although human-human transmission of H5N1 is rare, but once the virus has acquired this ability, a devastating pandemic may be inevitable. The virus is currently in WHO phase 3 pandemic alerts: A new influenza virus subtype causing disease in humans, but is yet to spread efficiently and sustainably among humans. Oseltamivir is a single most-win WHO recommended drug for the treatment and prophylaxis of H5N1 influenza virus infection. However, several oseltamivir resistant strains of H5N1 have been reported. Methods: In silico molecular docking algorithm and pharmacophore modelling simulations were used to identify a novel H5N1 avian influenza neuraminidase inhibitors. Results: Of the 518-neuraminidase analogue, five (eflornithine, eltrombopag, entecavir, aminosalicylic acid and pregabalin) demonstrated excellent binding affinities against viral neuraminidase similar to that of oseltamivir. Again, these drugs like oseltamivir interact mainly with arginine, tyrosine and glutamine at different positions of the neuraminidase. Similarly, oseltamivir and the five selected drugs superimpose to the active pocket of neuraminidase, further buttressing the previous findings. Furthermore, oseltamivir and the five drugs had common generated pharmacophores. Conclusion: This study was the first to demonstrate the anti-viral neuraminidase effect of eflornithine, eltrombopag, entecavir, aminosalicylic acid and pregabalin. Keywords: Neuraminidase, Oseltamivir, H5N1 avian influenza, Pharmacophore, molecular docking.

- Abstract
Research was carried out on the ethnobotanical potentials of common herbs in Nigeria using Enugu State as a case study. A total of 200 questionnaires were administered on herb sellers in major herb markets in the state. In all, 96 different plant species were encountered in the markets. Attempts were made to write the names of the species both in botanical and English languages as well as in the three major languages in Nigeria (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa). The families of the species were also documented. Finally, the various uses of the species and the part(s) of the plant species used were highlighted. This will surely be of great assistance to researchers, herb sellers and the entire consumers in overcoming the long standing problems of communication and identification. (Contains 1 table.)

Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is a chronic haemolytic anaemia associated with vaso-occlusive painful crises which may affect several systems including the gastro-intestinal system, resulting in abdominal pain. The concurrence of inflammatory bowel disease and haemoglobinopathy is rare. No previously reported concurrent cases of both SCA and ulcerative colitis (UC) in sub-Saharan Africa were found in the literature. A 16-year-old girl with concurrent SCA and UC is presented. She was admitted to University College Hospital, Ibadan with a 1-year history of recurrent peri-umbilical pain and bloody stools. These symptoms were mainly attributed to SCA at the referring hospital, and she was managed for chronic tropical diarrhoea without a remarkable clinical response. This case illustrates the concurrent presentation of SCA and ulcerative colitis which led to the missed and delayed diagnosis of ulcerative colitis.

Mice lacking GAD1 show neonatal mortality, but the human phenotype associated with GAD1 disruption is poorly characterized. Neuray et al. describe six patients with biallelic GAD1 mutations, presenting with early-infantile onset epilepsy, neurodevelopmental delay, muscle weakness and non-CNS manifestations., Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate are the most abundant amino acid neurotransmitters in the brain. GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, is synthesized by glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). Its predominant isoform GAD67, contributes up to ∼90% of base-level GABA in the CNS, and is encoded by the GAD1 gene. Disruption of GAD1 results in an imbalance of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters, and as Gad1−/− mice die neonatally of severe cleft palate, it has not been possible to determine any potential neurological dysfunction. Furthermore, little is known about the consequence of GAD1 disruption in humans. Here we present six affected individuals from six unrelated families, carrying bi-allelic GAD1 variants, presenting with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, characterized by early-infantile onset epilepsy and hypotonia with additional variable non-CNS manifestations such as skeletal abnormalities, dysmorphic features and cleft palate. Our findings highlight an important role for GAD1 in seizure induction, neuronal and extraneuronal development, and introduce GAD1 as a new gene associated with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy.

PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.

Results: The optic nerve diameter was higher in preeclamptic compared to controls with a mean of 6.72 ± 0.83mm and 4.30 ± 0.69mm respectively with p value <0.05. Positive fundoscopy findings was found in 35 preeclamptic patients. The OND, from ROC curve, that predicts raised intracranial pressure using fundoscopy as gold standard was a mean equal or >5.6mm. Conclusion: Ocular ultrasound is an effective screening tool for prediction of the presence of raised intracranial pressure in preeclamptic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DOMESTICATION of plants , *SANDY soils , *WATER immersion , *CROPS , *DRINKING water , *GERMINATION - Abstract
Knowledge of the method of seed germination is an important step of the domestication of crop plants. The objective of this study was to test the aptitude of germination of Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Desv.) using pretreatment condition. Eight batches of seeds were evaluated in two distinct substrates; namely sandy soil and ferralitic soil: (i) soaking of seed in cold water for 24 hours; (ii) soaking in hot water at 100 o C for 5 mm followed by in immersion into tap water for 24 hours, and (iii) scarification with razor blade. For each substrate, the treatments were compared to untreated controls. Results showed that seeds sown after scarification recorded the highest germination percentage (77.78%) with sandy soil (P < 0.05). Sandy soil also reduced the waiting time of germination (11.00 ± 0.00 days) and germination time (5.00 ± 0.5 days). Results of this study may serve as useful information for domestication of Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Desv.). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INNOVATION adoption , *BIOMETRY , *GOVERNMENT aid , *DATA analysis - Abstract
An exploratory investigation of factors influencing adoption of biometric technologies among public and private organizations in Nigeria is carried out in this study. Based on a modified technology-organization-environment (TOE) theoretical framework, an empirical analysis using data from questionnaires surveyed on these organizations was performed. The results show that compatibility, organizational size, top management support, trust between organizations, competitive pressure and uncertainty have significant influence on biometric technology adoption among these organizations. However, there is not enough evidence to support complexity, relative advantage, cost, employee resistance, technical knowledge and government support as having significant effect on biometric technology adoption. The implication of this study is that decision-makers in organizations need to pay more attention to the factors influencing biometric technology adoption in order to prevent fraud, curb insecurity and restrict unauthorized access to their digital and physical assets.
