This paper describes the procedure adopted for the selection of an alternative controlled variable to be used for the vertical stabilization (VS) of elongated plasmas in the JET tokamak in the framework of the Plasma Control Upgrade (PCU) activities. The PCU enhancement project, aimed at increasing the capabilities of the VS system, explored the possibility of having a valid alternative to the controlled variable ZPDIP used for several years. The main motivation of this study was the need of operating JET in future campaigns with the new ITER-like wall, which is expected to significantly shield some magnetic diagnostics. This study was also aimed at improving the VS capabilities by reducing the effect of edge-localized modes on the vertical position estimator. The alternative controlled variable was also planned to play the role of backup solution in case of trouble with the standard one after the modifications of the radial field circuit. The selection was made paying particular attention to robustness, reliability, and reduced impact on the ongoing experimental campaigns. The new controlled variable, denoted OBS05, was successfully tested in JET in a variety of plasma scenarios and became the new vertical velocity estimator for the VS system.

Nuclear fusion is, in a sense, the opposite of nuclear fission. Fission, which is a mature technology, produces energy through the splitting of heavy atoms like uranium in controlled chain reactions. Unfortunately, the by-products of fission are highly radioactive and long lasting. On the other hand, fusion is the process by which the nuclei of two light atoms such as hydrogen are fused together to form a heavier (helium) nucleus, with energy produced as a by-product. Although controlled fusion is extremely technologically challenging, a fusion-power reactor would offer significant advantages over existing energy sources. This thesis is devoted to the control of tokamaks, magnetic confinement devices constructed in the shape of a torus (or doughnut). Tokamaks are the most promising of several proposed magnetic confinement devices. The need to improve the performance of modern tokamak operations has led to a further development of the plasma shape and position control systems. In particular, extremely elongated plasmas, with high vertical-instability growth rate, are envisaged to reach the required performance for ignition. This request for better performance from the experimentalists’ side has motivated the development of the new vertical-stabilization (VS) system at the JET tokamak, which has been proposed within the Plasma Control Upgrade project. This thesis presents the activity carried out to increase the capability of the VS system and to understand the operational limits in order to assess what can be done to improve the overall performance with the existing hardware and control system so as to minimize the impact on JET operation. The first objective of this work is the analysis of the new diagnostic system and the influence of the mechanical structure on the magnetic measurements used as diagnostics by the VS controller; the main focus is on the influence on the controller performance in the presence of large perturbations. The second objective is to design a new controlled variable to increase the performance of the VS system. The third objective is to provide an equivalent model of an ELM (Edge Localized Mode), in terms of internal plasma profile parameters via best fit of the vertical velocity estimation. The last objective is to obtain a reliable and accurate model of the overall system, based on the new platform MARTe, developed at JET and useful also for other devices.

Tokamaks are the most promising approach for nuclear fusion on earth. They are toroidal machines where the plasma is heated in a ring-shaped vessel and kept away from the vessel by applied magnetic fields. To achieve high performance in tokamaks, plasmas with elongated poloidal cross-section are needed. Such elongated plasmas are vertically unstable, hence position control on a fast time scale is clearly an essential feature for all tokamak devices. In this context the Plasma Control Upgrade project was aimed at increasing the capabilities of the Vertical Stabilization (VS) of the JET tokamak. This paper introduces the new JET VS system and focuses on how the flexibility of this real-time system has been exploited to enlarge its operational limits in terms of maximum controllable disturbance. Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. The Plasma Control Upgrade (PCU) enhancement project was setup with the aim of effectively increasing the JET operating space by both improving the Vertical Stabilization System Controller and by procuring a more powerful Radial Field Amplifier. The hardware and software technological advancements that have been used allowed to implement a 200 channel, 20 kHz control system with less than 2 μ s jitter and over 2 G o p s of processing capability. The software design, driven by an object oriented analysis, enabled a good compromise between real-time performances and reliability–maintainability objectives. The first operational experience of the system will be presented.

The JET enhancement project Plasma Control Upgrade (PCU) aimed at increasing the capabilities of the plasma vertical stabilization (VS) system. One of the activities of this project was devoted to the development of simple but sufficiently accurate models of the VS system so as to address the main design choices, use the simulation tools as reliable test-beds, and provide an adequate support to the engineering design and commissioning of the new Enhanced Radial Field Amplifier (ERFA). This paper illustrates some of the main achievements of the modelling activity, which gave rise to a closed loop model of the VS system, including plasma, PF coils and passive structures. In particular the paper deals with the selection of the set of turns to be used in the control coils and with the estimation of the eddy current effects on the VS system. The latter analysis addressed an upgrade of the converter units of ERFA, successfully implemented during its commissioning on plasma in August 2009.

Validation by means of simulation is a crucial step when developing real-time control systems. Modeling and simulation are an essential tool since the early design phase, when the control algorithms are designed and tested. This phase is commonly carried out in off-line environments such as Matlab® and Simulink®. A MARTe-based simulator has been recently developed to validate the new JET Vertical Stabilization (VS) system. MARTe is the multi-thread framework used at JET to deploy hard real-time control systems. This paper presents the software architecture of the MARTe-based simulator and it shows how this tool has been effectively used to evaluate the effects of Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) on the VS system. By using the simulator it is possible to analyze different plasma configurations, extrapolating the limit of the new vertical amplifier in terms of the energy of the largest rejectable ELM.

Tokamaks are the most promising approach for nuclear fusion on earth. They are toroidal machines where the plasma is heated in a ring-shaped vessel and kept away from the vessel by applied magnetic fields. To achieve high performance in tokamaks, plasmas with elongated poloidal cross-section are needed. Such elongated plasmas are vertically unstable, hence position control on a fast time scale is clearly an essential feature for all tokamak devices. In this context the Plasma Control Upgrade project was aimed at increasing the capabilities of the Vertical Stabilization (VS) of the JET tokamak. This paper introduces the new JET VS system and focuses on how the flexibility of this real-time system has been exploited to enlarge its operational limits in terms of maximum controllable disturbance. Eventually, some experimental results achieved during the last experimental campaigns are presented.

The need to improve the performance of modern tokamak operations has led to a further development of the plasma shape and position control systems. In particular, extremely elongated plasmas, with high vertical-instability growth rate, are envisaged to reach the required performance for ignition. This request for better performance from the experimentalists' side has motivated the development of the new vertical-stabilization (VS) system at the JET tokamak, which has been proposed within the Plasma Control Upgrade project. The main aim of the project is to enhance the capabilities of the plasma vertical position control system in order to operate with very highly elongated plasmas in the presence of large perturbations. This paper focuses on the new software architecture of the VS system, which relies on a highly configurable real-time framework. Due to its flexibility, the new VS system executes different control algorithms, and it schedules the one which maximizes the performance in each plasma phase.

The impact of the 3D effects on the dynamic response of the plasma in the JET tokamak is assessed on the time scale of interest for plasma magnetic control and stabiliza tion. These effects are due to the limbs of the magnetic circuit and to the eddy currents in the 3D metallic structures. The plasma behaviour is taken into account by a specific matrix of modifi ed inductances interacting with the remaining part of the syst em via a virtual coupling surface.
