We prove that if there are $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters then, for every infinite cardinal $\kappa$ such that $\kappa^\omega=\kappa$, there exists a group topology on the free Abelian group of cardinality $\kappa$ without nontrivial convergent sequences and such that every finite power is countably compact. In particular, there are arbitrarily large countably compact groups. This answers a 1992 question of D. Dikranjan and D. Shakhmatov.

Mathematics - General Topology - Abstract
Assuming the existence of $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, we classify the non-torsion Abelian groups of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group topology. We show that for each $\kappa \in [\mathfrak c, 2^\mathfrak c]$ each of these groups has a countably compact group topology of weight $\kappa$ without non-trivial convergent sequences and another that has convergent sequences. Assuming the existence of $2^\mathfrak c$ selective ultrafilters, there are at least $2^\mathfrak c$ non homeomorphic such topologies in each case and we also show that every Abelian group of cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak c$ is algebraically countably compact. We also show that it is consistent that every Abelian group of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ that admits a countably compact group topology admits a countably compact group topology without non-trivial convergent sequences whose weight has countable cofinality., Comment: new revised and expanded version that includes new co-authors

- Abstract
Trillion of cigarette butts are annually littered without being recycled. This work aims at valorizing the whole cigarette butts and their components (paper, filter and tobacco) into Fe-Nx-C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid and alkaline media. The pristine wastes were pyrolyzed at 450 degrees C, activated with KOH at 700 degrees C, blended with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) precursor, and heat-treated at 600 degrees C to produce a robust Fe-Nx-C material with ORR active units. The effect of the cigarette components on the final electrocatalytic activity was evaluated by thoroughly investigating the surface chemistry with XPS. The electrocatalysts displayed similar results among the different components in both media due to comparable surface chemistry, especially concerning the nitrogen functional groups. The highest performance was obtained in alkaline where the electrocatalysts from whole cigarettes and paper (CIGF_450 and CIGPF_450) showed an E1/2 of 0.89 V vs RHE, slightly larger than that of Pt/C with 40 wt % of Pt, which encouraged to replace Pt-based electrocatalysts in alkaline fuel cells.Within the core of circular economy, cigarette butts and their components (paper, filter and tobacco) were converted into Fe-Nx-C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction, via pyrolysis, KOH activation and blending with FePc precursor. The final electrocatalysts were tested in acid and alkaline media with RRDE after characterizing them from the morphological and chemical point of view. image

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We derive and implement a general method to characterize the nonclassicality in compound discrete- and continuous-variable systems. For this purpose, we introduce the operational notion of conditional hybrid nonclassicality which relates to the ability to produce a nonclassical continuous-variable state by projecting onto a general superposition of discrete-variable subsystem. We discuss the importance of this form of quantumness in connection with interfaces for quantum communication. To verify the conditional hybrid nonclassicality, a matrix version of a nonclassicality quasiprobability is derived and its sampling approach is formulated. We experimentally generate an entangled, hybrid Schr\"odinger cat state, using a coherent photon-addition process acting on two temporal modes, and we directly sample its nonclassicality quasiprobability matrix. The introduced conditional quantum effects are certified with high statistical significance., Comment: Closer to published version

It has a great impact on the quality of life and on health care system and represents a heavy economic burden. The diagnosis is based on symptoms, classified by the Rome IV criteria. The aim of this review was to evaluate the current therapeutic guidelines for adult CIC and highlight new emerging treatments. In detail, European, French, Spanish and Korean guidelines have been identified and compared. Osmotic laxatives, and in particular polyethylene glycol, represent the first-line therapeutic approach. Stimulant laxatives are recommended as a second-line therapy. Pelvic floor rehabilitation is recommended in patients with ano-rectal dyssynergia. In patients who fail to improve with pharmacological therapies sacral nerve stimulation is considered as last chance before surgery. Surgical approach has however limited indications in selected cases. Inertia coli refractory to any approach and obstructed defecation are two subtypes which can benefit from surgery. Among emerging agents, prucalopride, a prokinetic agent, is recommended as a second-line treatment in refractory CIC patients. In addition, the secretagogues linaclotide and plecanatide and the bile acid transported inhibitor elobixibat can be effective in patients not responsive to a second-line therapeutic regimen, although they are not worldwide commercially available. Keywords: chronic idiopathic constipation, guidelines, osmotic laxatives, pelvic floor rehabilitation, prokinetics, secretagogues

Management of patients is a great challenge for physicians; at the present, the therapeutic strategy aimed to treat the different symptoms, and no medical therapy is proven to modify the natural history of the disease. GELSECTAN® (xyloglucan, pea protein and tannins, xylo-oligosaccharides) is a medical device with both protective and prebiotic actions on the intestinal mucosa, able to restore intestinal permeability and to improve gastrointestinal symptoms, controlling diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating in adult patients with irritable bowel syndrome. We report and discuss four cases of different patients with irritable bowel syndrome successfully managed with Gelsectan in the real clinical practice. Literature data, as well as these case reports, show that this device is effective and safe in improving symptoms and bowel habits associated to irritable bowel syndrome; its efficacy and safety were confirmed for the long-term use too. Agents with film-forming protective properties, such as Gelsectan, represent a new alternative therapeutic option for the management of patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Keywords: irritable bowel syndrome, GELSECTAN®, xyloglucan, tannins, xylo-oligosaccharides

Micro-fabrication in diamond is involved in a wide set of emerging technologies, exploiting the exceptional characteristics of diamond for application in bio-physics, photonics, radiation detection. Micro ion-beam irradiation and pulsed laser irradiation are complementary techniques, which permit the implementation of complex geometries, by modification and functionalization of surface and/or bulk material, modifying the optical, electrical and mechanical characteristics of the material. In this article we summarize the work done in Florence (Italy) concerning ion beam and pulsed laser beam micro-fabrication in diamond., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

- Abstract
Purpose: The use of arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) as a target intervention to manage elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and its effect on clinical outcomes remain unclear. We aimed to describe targets for PaCO2 in acute brain injured (ABI) patients and assess the occurrence of abnormal PaCO2 values during the first week in the intensive care unit (ICU). The secondary aim was to assess the association of PaCO2 with in-hospital mortality. Methods: We carried out a secondary analysis of a multicenter prospective observational study involving adult invasively ventilated patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), or ischemic stroke (IS). PaCO2 was collected on day 1, 3, and 7 from ICU admission. Normocapnia was defined as PaCO2 > 35 and to 45 mmHg; mild hypocapnia as 32–35 mmHg; severe hypocapnia as 26–31 mmHg, forced hypocapnia as < 26 mmHg, and hypercapnia as > 45 mmHg. Results: 1476 patients (65.9% male, mean age 52 ± 18 years) were included. On ICU admission, 804 (54.5%) patients were normocapnic (incidence 1.37 episodes per person/day during ICU stay), and 125 (8.5%) and 334 (22.6%) were mild or severe hypocapnic (0.52 and 0.25 episodes/day). Forced hypocapnia and hypercapnia were used in 40 (2.7%) and 173 (11.7%) patients. PaCO2 had a U-shape relationship with in-hospital mortality with only severe hypocapnia and hypercapnia being associated with increased probability of in-hospital mortality (omnibus p value = 0.0009). Important differences were observed across different subgroups of ABI patients. Conclusions: Normocapnia and mild hypocapnia are common in ABI patients and do not affect patients' outcome. Extreme derangements of PaCO2 values were significantly associated with increased in-hospital mortality.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We investigate gauge invariant scalar fluctuations of the metric during inflation in a non-perturbative formalism in the framework of a recently introduced scalar-tensor theory of gravity formulated on a Weyl-Integrable geometry. We found that the Weyl scalar field can play the role of the inflaton field in this theory. As an application we study the case of a power law inflation. In this case the quasi-scale invariance of the spectrum for scalar fluctuations of the metric is achieved for determined values of the $\omega$ parameter of the scalar-tensor theory. In our formalism the physical inflaton field has a geometrical origin., Comment: 9 pages, no figures. This is a revised version accepted for publication in Physical Review D

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Broadband single photons are usually considered not to couple efficiently to atomic gases because of the large mismatch in bandwidth. Contrary to this intuitive picture, here we demonstrate that the interaction of ultrashort single photons with a dense resonant atomic sample deeply modifies the temporal shape of their wavepacket mode without degrading their non-classical character, and effectively generates zero-area single-photon pulses. This is a clear signature of strong transient coupling between single broadband (THz-level) light quanta and atoms, with intriguing fundamental implications and possible new applications to the storage of quantum information., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We examine the behavior of non-Gaussian states of light under the action of probabilistic noiseless amplification and attenuation. Surprisingly, we find that the mean field amplitude may decrease in the process of noiseless amplification -- or increase in the process of noiseless attenuation, a counterintuitive effect that Gaussian states cannot exhibit. This striking phenomenon could be tested with experimentally accessible non-Gaussian states, such as single-photon added coherent states. We propose an experimental scheme, which is robust with respect to the major experimental imperfections such as inefficient single-photon detection and imperfect photon addition. In particular, we argue that the observation of mean field amplification by noiseless attenuation should be feasible with current technology.

- Abstract
Background: There is insufficient evidence to guide ventilatory targets in acute brain injury (ABI). Recent studies have shown associations between mechanical power (MP) and mortality in critical care populations. We aimed to describe MP in ventilated patients with ABI, and evaluate associations between MP and clinical outcomes. Methods: In this preplanned, secondary analysis of a prospective, multi-center, observational cohort study (ENIO, NCT03400904), we included adult patients with ABI (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤ 12 before intubation) who required mechanical ventilation (MV) ≥ 24 h. Using multivariable log binomial regressions, we separately assessed associations between MP on hospital day (HD)1, HD3, HD7 and clinical outcomes: hospital mortality, need for reintubation, tracheostomy placement, and development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Results: We included 1217 patients (mean age 51.2 years [SD 18.1], 66% male, mean body mass index [BMI] 26.3 [SD 5.18]) hospitalized at 62 intensive care units in 18 countries. Hospital mortality was 11% (n = 139), 44% (n = 536) were extubated by HD7 of which 20% (107/536) required reintubation, 28% (n = 340) underwent tracheostomy placement, and 9% (n = 114) developed ARDS. The median MP on HD1, HD3, and HD7 was 11.9 J/min [IQR 9.2–15.1], 13 J/min [IQR 10–17], and 14 J/min [IQR 11–20], respectively. MP was overall higher in patients with ARDS, especially those with higher ARDS severity. After controlling for same-day pressure of arterial oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen (P/F ratio), BMI, and neurological severity, MP at HD1, HD3, and HD7 was independently associated with hospital mortality, reintubation and tracheostomy placement. The adjusted relative risk (aRR) was greater at higher MP, and strongest for: mortality on HD1 (compared to the HD1 median MP 11.9 J/min, aRR at 17 J/min was 1.22, 95% CI 1.14–1.30) and HD3 (1.38, 95% CI 1.23–1.53), reintubation on HD1 (1.64; 95% CI 1.57–1.72), and tracheostomy on HD7 (1

- Abstract
Background: In acute brain injury (ABI), the effects of hypoxemia as a potential cause of secondary brain damage and poor outcome are well documented, whereas the impact of hyperoxemia is unclear. The primary aim of this study was to assess the episodes of hypoxemia and hyperoxemia in patients with ABI during the intensive care unit (ICU) stay and to determine their association with in-hospital mortality. The secondary aim was to identify the optimal thresholds of arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) predicting in-hospital mortality. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter observational cohort study. Adult patients with ABI (traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid aneurysmal hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, ischemic stroke) with available data on PaO2 during the ICU stay were included. Hypoxemia was defined as PaO2 < 80 mm Hg, normoxemia was defined as PaO2 between 80 and 120 mm Hg, mild/moderate hyperoxemia was defined as PaO2 between 121 and 299 mm Hg, and severe hyperoxemia was defined as PaO2 levels ≥ 300 mm Hg. Results: A total of 1,407 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 52 (±18) years, and 929 (66%) were male. Over the ICU stay, the fractions of patients in the study cohort who had at least one episode of hypoxemia, mild/moderate hyperoxemia, and severe hyperoxemia were 31.3%, 53.0%, and 1.7%, respectively. PaO2 values below 92 mm Hg and above 156 mm Hg were associated with an increased probability of in-hospital mortality. Differences were observed among subgroups of patients with ABI, with consistent effects only seen in patients without traumatic brain injury. Conclusions: In patients with ABI, hypoxemia and mild/moderate hyperoxemia were relatively frequent. Hypoxemia and hyperoxemia during ICU stay may influence in-hospital mortality. However, the small number of oxygen values collected represents a major limitation of the study.

Travelling modes of single-photon-added coherent states (SPACS) are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. Given a set of experimentally measured quadrature distributions, we estimate parameters of the state and also extract information about the detector efficiency. The method used is a minimal distance estimation between theoretical and experimental quantities, which additionally allows to evaluate the precision of estimated parameters. Given experimental data, we also estimate the lower and upper bounds on fidelity. The results are believed to encourage preciser engineering and detection of SPACS., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, based on the contribution to the 19th Central European Workshop on Quantum Optics (2-6 July 2012, Sinaia, Romania)

We present the results of an operational use of experimentally measured optical tomograms to determine state characteristics (purity) avoiding any reconstruction of quasiprobabilities. We also develop a natural way how to estimate the errors (including both statistical and systematic ones) by an analysis of the experimental data themselves. Precision of the experiment can be increased by postselecting the data with minimal (systematic) errors. We demonstrate those techniques by considering coherent and photon-added coherent states measured via the time-domain improved homodyne detection. The operational use and precision of the data allowed us to check for the first time purity-dependent uncertainty relations and uncertainty relations for Shannon and R\'{e}nyi entropies., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, some results are extended

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We report the experimental reconstruction of a nonclassicality quasiprobability for a single-photon added thermal state. This quantity has significant negativities, which is necessary and sufficient for the nonclassicality of the quantum state. Our method presents several advantages compared to the reconstruction of the P function, since the nonclassicality filters used in this case can regularize the quasiprobabilities as well as their statistical uncertainties. A-priori assumptions about the quantum state are therefore not necessary. We also demonstrate that, in principle, our method is not limited by small quantum efficiencies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Noise is the price to pay when trying to clone or amplify arbitrary quantum states. The quantum noise associated to linear phase-insensitive amplifiers can only be avoided by relaxing the requirement of a deterministic operation. Here we present the experimental realization of a probabilistic noiseless linear amplifier that is able to amplify coherent states at the highest level of effective gain and final state fidelity ever reached. Based on a sequence of photon addition and subtraction, and characterized by a significant amplification and low distortions, this high-fidelity amplification scheme may become an essential tool for quantum communications and metrology, by enhancing the discrimination between partially overlapping quantum states or by recovering the information transmitted over lossy channels., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We present the experimental realization of a scheme, based on single-photon interference, for implementing superpositions of distinct quantum operations. Its application to a thermal light field (a well-categorized classical entity) illustrates quantum superposition from a new standpoint and provides a direct and quantitative verification of the bosonic commutation relation between creation and annihilation operators. By shifting the focus towards operator superpositions, this result opens interesting alternative perspectives for manipulating quantum states., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters

Quantum Physics - Abstract
A beam splitter is one of the most important devices in an optics laboratory because of its handiness and versatility; equivalent devices are found in various quantum systems to couple two subsystems or to interfere them. While it is normal that two independent input fields are superposed at the beam splitter to give correlated outputs, identical Gaussian states interfere there to produce totally independent output fields. We prove that Gaussian states with same the variance are the only states which bring about factorizable output fields., Comment: 6 pages, published in PRA
