Abstract

The ring opening by the cleavage of the C(sp$^3$)–O bond of 2-hydroxybutyrolactone with (ethylthio)trimethylsilane was effectively catalysed by indium triiodide. Screening the reaction conditions allowed optimizing the ring opening. The effect of the nucleophile/catalyst ratio on the reaction efficiency has also been demonstrated. After optimization, 2-hydroxy-4-(ethylthio)butyric acid was isolated with an excellent yield (85%), thus making this method useful for the preparation of methionine analogues.

Abstract

A rhodium(III)‐based catalytic system has been used to develop a C−H bond activation of benzaldehyde derivatives and subsequent functionalization with dioxazolones in order to afford imides. The importance of the nature of the directing group to perform selectively the aldehydic C−H bond activation has been highlighted. The scope investigation showed that this transformation could be applied to various dioxazolones and many benzaldehyde derivatives as well as an acrolein derivative. Derivatization reactions of the imide products demonstrated the synthetic utility of this rhodium‐catalyzed aldehydic C−H amidation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: WO3/ZrO2 catalysts doped with SiO2 were shown to be more selective and stable catalysts than without SiO2 for dehydration of glycerol to acrolein at 300°C. The catalysts prepared combining incorporation of siliceous species into ZrOx(OH)4-2x precursor and anionic exchange with peroxotungstate exhibited a selectivity to acrolein reaching 78% at nearly total glycerol conversion and a conversion of 82% was maintained after 177h on stream. Characterization by several techniques (adsorption isotherms, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, NH3-TPD measurements) allowed to understand the origin of the improvement: the deposition of SiO2 on ZrO2 favored the formation of larger mesoporous pores and reduces the support basicity limiting the formation of by-products that can be coke precursors.
