Abstract

Ultracold atom-based electron sources have recently been proposed as an alternative to the conventional photo-injectors or thermionic electron guns widely used in modern particle accelerators. The advantages of ultracold atom-based electron sources lie in the fact that the electrons extracted from the plasma (created from near threshold photo-ionization of ultracold atoms) have a very low temperature, i.e. down to tens of Kelvin. Extraction of these electrons has the potential for producing very low emittance electron bunches. These features are crucial for the next generation of particle accelerators, including free electron lasers, plasma-based accelerators and future linear colliders. The source also has many potential direct applications, including ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and electron microscopy, due to its intrinsically high coherence. In this paper, the basic mechanism of ultracold electron beam production is discussed and our new research facility for an ultracold, low emittance electron source is introduced. This source is based on a novel alternating current Magneto-Optical Trap (the AC-MOT). Detailed simulations for a proposed extraction system have shown that for a 1 pC bunch charge, a beam emittance of 0.35 mm mrad is obtainable, with a bunch length of 3 mm and energy spread 1 %., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Journal of Instrumentation in 2014

Design: Multicenter retrospective chart review.Methods: An audit of consecutive patients undergoing temporal artery biopsy (TABx) for suspected GCA was conducted at 14 international medical centers. The outcome variable was biopsy-proven GCA. The predictor variables were age, gender, headache, clinical temporal artery abnormality, jaw claudication, vision loss, diplopia, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and platelet level. The data were divided into three groups to train, validate, and test the models. The NN model with the lowest false-negative rate was chosen. Internal and external validations were performed.Results: Of 1,833 patients who underwent TABx, there was complete information on 1,201 patients, 300 (25%) of whom had a positive TABx. On multivariable LR age, platelets, jaw claudication, vision loss, log C-reactive protein, log erythrocyte sedimentation rate, headache, and clinical temporal artery abnormality were statistically significant predictors of a positive TABx (P≤0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve/Hosmer–Lemeshow P for LR was 0.867 (95% CI, 0.794, 0.917)/0.119 vs NN 0.860 (95% CI, 0.786, 0.911)/0.805, with no statistically significant difference of the area under the curves (P=0.316). The misclassification rate/false-negative rate of LR was 20.6%/47.5% vs 18.1%/30.5% for NN. Missing data analysis did not change the results.Conclusion: Statistical models can aid in the triage of patients with suspected GCA. Misclassification remains a concern, but cutoff values for 95% and 99% sensitivities are provided (https://goo.gl/THCnuU). Abstract

A first beam dynamics and RF design of an Alvarez-type drift tube linac (DTL) has been defined in the framework of the EU project, HITRIplus. It is meant primarily as a carbon (12C4+) and helium (4He2+) ion injector of a compact synchrotron for patient treatment. As a second implemen-tation, helium particle acceleration with a higher duty cycle (10%) enables radioisotope production. The 352.2 MHz structure efficiently accelerates ion species with A/q=3 and 2, in the energy range from 1 to 5 MeV/u and for a beam current up to ~0.5 mA. The design extends to a full length of ~6.4 meters. Permanent magnet quadrupoles are utilized all along the DTL for focusing both ion beams. This paper presents a first-phase analysis towards a realistic DTL de-sign capable of providing full beam transmission and min-imum overall emittance increase for both A/q values.

Abstract

The Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linac and 1.6 MW RF power system of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) facility in the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho (Japan) has been installed and conditioned. During the assembly and uning process, the RFQ cavity was protected with a temporary tent from the potential deterioration of performance caused by dust. The vacuum in the cavity was improved through the 100 °C baking rocess of the cavity. The high power test of the 175 MHz RF systems up to 200 kW in CW for each of the eight RF chains was performed for checking its stable output reproducibility in Japan, before connecting 9–3/16 inch coaxial transmission lines from the RF chains to the RF input couplers of the cavity. It was confirmed that the eight RF chains provided the balanced RF power to the single RFQ cavity inphase using a feedback loop and a synchronization system. The peak power in the cavity achieved 150 kW in the pulsed mode, which corresponds approximately to the required electric field to accelerate proton beam. Such RF conditioning process is ongoing to achieve 600 kW approximately required for deuteron beam commissioning planned in 2018.

Abstract

Dynamic detection of vibrational characteristics of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) was investigated through direct coupling with a micromechanical probe. The nanomechanical structures were harmonically driven using piezoelectric transducers and the resulting out-of-plane excitations were monitored with a conventional atomic force microscope (AFM) probe. Intermittent contact imaging data show quantitative linear classical resonance behavior. Additionally, noncontact AFM interrogation revealed the initiation of interaction between the two oscillators, providing a qualitative description of the resonant response. The vibrational spectra measured through optical excitation and detection were in good agreement with the coupled NEMS-AFM system measurement results. The dynamic response of the coupled system was modeled through a combination of long range van der Waals and contact forces using the Derjaguin–Muller–Toporov model. These results collectively demonstrate that this is a viable method for detecting the dynamic behavior of nanoscale suspended mechanical structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SPES, a new accelerator facility for both the production of exotic ion beams and radio-pharmaceuticals, is presently being installed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy (LNL). The new cyclotron, which will provide high intensity proton beams for the production of the rare isotopes, has been installed and is now in the commissioning phase. We present here the status of the part of the project devoted to the production and acceleration of fission fragments created in the interaction of an intense proton beam on a production target of UCx. The expected SPES radioactive beams intensities, their quality and their maximum energies (up to 11 MeV/A for A=130) will permit to perform forefront research in nuclear structure and nuclear dynamics far from the stability valley. Abstract

The space charge compensation process is important in order to transport ion beams with high perveance from the source to the RFQ. In particular, not fully compensated beams may develop halo and emittance growth at the entrance of the RFQ. The signal of incomplete compensation is the presence of a significant residual potential (in the range of 5% or 10% of the uncompensated potential). In order to investigate these phenomena, we performed CPU-time-demanding simulations with selfconsistent programs from which we could extract the information about the space charge and the potential along the transfer line (consisting of three drift spaces and two solenoid), especially at the entrance and at the exit of the solenoids, with a typical D+ beam current of 135 mA, a 0:25 mm mrad rms normalized emittance at a 100 keV input energy. We also compared the results with the FGA (four grid analyzer) measurements performed at the prototype accelerator of the IFMIF/EVEDA stage. Simulations were parallelized through message passing interface python compiled code, via the PIC codeWARP. Particularly we compare the results obtained in the rz (cylindrical symmetry) and in the 3d xyz implementations, to verify whether the former approach (much faster) is accurate enough.
