Abstract

Werknemers kunnen op hun werk blootgesteld worden aan verschillende risico’s, zoals blootstelling aan schadelijke stoffen, fysieke belasting en ongevallen. De risico’s van deze verschillende blootstellingen worden tot nu toe onafhankelijk van elkaar berekend en beoordeeld. In een haalbaarheidstudie is voor enkele beroepen in de bouwnijverheid één model ontwikkeld waarmee verschillende blootstellingen vergeleken kunnen worden. Dit model, het ‘Occupational Health Impact Assessment (OHIA)’ model genaamd, berekent de ziektelast van het optreden van silicose en longkanker (ten gevolge van de blootstelling aan silica), lage rugklachten (ten gevolge van het tillen van zware lasten), sterfte en letsel (ten gevolge van ongevallen) en handeczeem (ten gevolge van blootstelling aan irriterende stoffen). Deze berekeningen zijn uitgevoerd voor vier beroepsgroepen, namelijk de stratenmaker, timmerman, tegelzetter en betonboorder/zager.

Abstract

Two classification systems are briefly reviewed that analyse incidents and accidents in a statistical way, considering their underlying causes and potential recovery mechanisms. They have several possible mining applications. An assessment of the quality of a safety management system could be included in a decision-making process involving risk assessment and risk criteria. Existing accident/incident data could be collected and analysed to provide a prioritised list for safety improvements in the manner of a cost-benefit analysis. An audit question-set could be generated for assessing the performance of a safety management system. 25. Hydrogen bonding by alcohols and phenols—II The effects of solvents on hydrogen bonded systems

Abstract

It is shown that the solvent dependence of the νOH frequencies of the OH⋯O bonds of alcohol/ether complexes is significantly different for methanol and for phenol although both follow roughly the pattern of behaviour of carbonyl νCO absorptions. Much larger differences are found between the solvent behaviour of these complexes and that of alcohol dimers. The results are rationalised in terms of solvent associations with the complex leading to a strengthening of the existing hydrogen bond. In alcohol/ether complexes such effects are only significant in proton donating solvents when ternary systems of the type XH ⋯⋯OR are formed. In alcohol dimer systems proton donors produce similar results but proton acceptors are equally effective as they can attack the other end of the chain to give the ternary system OH⋯OH⋯X.

26. Hydrogen bonding by alcohols and phenols—I. The nature of the hydrogen bond in alcohol dimers and polymers

Abstract

Evidence is presented that the dimers of alcohols and phenols have an open chain rather than a cyclic structure. It is also shown that the free OH groups of these dimers are able to form stronger hydrogen bonds than the original monomers. On the basis of these observations an explanation is offered for the fact that the hydrogen bonds linking trimers and higher polymers are significantly stronger than those of dimers.
