Search

We propose the usage of an innovative method for selecting transients and variables. These sources are detected at different wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum spanning from radio waves to gamma-rays. We focus on radio signals and use State Space Models, which are also referred to as Dynamic Linear Models. State Space Models (and more generally parametric autoregressive models) have been the mainstay of economic modelling for some years, but rarely they have been used in Astrophysics. The statistics currently used to identify radio variables and transients are not sophisticated enough to distinguish different types of variability. These methods simply report the overall modulation and significance of the variability, and the ordering of the data in time is insignificant. State Space Models are much more advanced and can encode not only the amount and significance of the variability but also properties, such as slope, rise or decline for a given time t. In this work, we evaluate the effectiveness of State Space Models for transient and variable detection including classification in time-series astronomy. We also propose a method for detecting a transient source hosted in a variable active galaxy, whereby the time-series of a static host galaxy and the dynamic nature of the transient in the galaxy are intertwined. Furthermore, we examine the hypothetical scenario where the target transient we want to detect is the gravitational wave source GW170817 (or similar).

We present results from a search for the HI 21-cm line in absorption towards 16 bright radio sources with the 6-antenna commissioning array of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our targets were selected from the 2-Jy sample, a flux-limited survey of the southern radio sky with extensive multi-wavelength follow-up. Two sources were detected in HI absorption including a new detection towards the bright FRII radio galaxy PKS 0409-75 at a redshift of z=0.674. The HI absorption line is blueshifted by ~3300 km/s compared to the optical redshift of the host galaxy of PKS 0409-75 at z=0.693. Deep optical imaging and spectroscopic follow-up with the GMOS instrument on the Gemini-South telescope reveal that the HI absorption is associated with a galaxy in front of the southern radio lobe with a stellar mass of $3.2 - 6.8 \times 10^{11}M_\odot$, a star-formation rate of $\sim 1.24 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and an estimated HI column density of $2.16\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, assuming a spin temperature of $T_{\rm spin}=500$ K and source covering factor of $C_{\rm f}=0.3$. Using polarisation measurements of PKS 0409-75 from the literature we estimate the magnetic field of the absorbing galaxy to be ~14.5$\mu$G, consistent with field strengths observed in nearby spiral galaxies, but larger than expected for an elliptical galaxy. The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 seconds to $\sim 5$ years. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of $\sim 162$ hours of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888~MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of 0.24~mJy~beam$^{-1}$ and angular resolution of $12-20$ arcseconds. There are 113 fields, \red{each of which was observed for 12 minutes integration time}, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5\,131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1\,646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039--5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR~J0533--4257, LEHPM~2-783, UCAC3~89--412162 and 2MASS J22414436--6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multiwavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

We present the data and initial results from the first Pilot Survey of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU), observed at 944 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The survey covers 270 \sqdeg of an area covered by the Dark Energy Survey, reaching a depth of 25--30 \ujybm\ rms at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 11--18 arcsec, resulting in a catalogue of $\sim$ 220,000 sources, of which $\sim$ 180,000 are single-component sources. Here we present the catalogue of single-component sources, together with (where available) optical and infrared cross-identifications, classifications, and redshifts. This survey explores a new region of parameter space compared to previous surveys. Specifically, the EMU Pilot Survey has a high density of sources, and also a high sensitivity to low surface-brightness emission. These properties result in the detection of types of sources that were rarely seen in or absent from previous surveys. We present some of these new results here., Comment: Accepted by PASA

The Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) is the first large-area survey to be conducted with the full 36-antenna Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. RACS will provide a shallow model of the ASKAP sky that will aid the calibration of future deep ASKAP surveys. RACS will cover the whole sky visible from the ASKAP site in Western Australia, and will cover the full ASKAP band of $700-1800$ MHz. The RACS images are generally deeper than the existing NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) radio surveys and have better spatial resolution. All RACS survey products will be public, including radio images (with $\sim 15$ arcsecond resolution) and catalogues of about three million source components with spectral index and polarisation information. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) has observed the entire southern sky (Declination, $\delta <$ 30 deg) at low radio-frequencies, over the range 72-231 MHz. These observations constitute the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) Survey, and we use the extragalactic catalogue (Galactic latitude, $|b| >$ 10 deg) to define the GLEAM 4-Jy (G4Jy) Sample. This is a complete sample of the 'brightest' radio-sources ($S_{\mathrm{151MHz}} >$ 4 Jy), the majority of which are active galactic nuclei with powerful radio-jets. Crucially, low-frequency observations allow the selection of such sources in an orientation-independent way (i.e. minimising the bias caused by Doppler boosting, inherent in high-frequency surveys). We then use higher-resolution radio images, and information at other wavelengths, to morphologically classify the brightest components in GLEAM. We also conduct cross-checks against the literature, and perform internal matching, in order to improve sample completeness (which is estimated to be $>$ 95.5%). This results in a catalogue of 1,863 sources, making the G4Jy Sample over 10 times larger than that of the revised Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources (3CRR; $S_{\mathrm{178MHz}} >$ 10.9 Jy). Of these G4Jy sources, 78 are resolved by the MWA (Phase-I) synthesised beam ($\sim$2 arcmin at 200 MHz), and we label 67% of the sample as 'single', 26% as 'double', 4% as 'triple', and 3% as having 'complex' morphology at $\sim$1 GHz (45-arcsec resolution). Alongside this, our value-added catalogue provides mid-infrared source associations (subject to 6-arcsec resolution at 3.4 micron) for the radio emission, as identified through visual inspection and thorough checks against the literature. As such, the G4Jy Sample can be used as a reliable training set for cross-identification via machine-learning algorithms. The entire southern sky (Declination, $\delta <$ 30 deg) has been observed using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), which provides radio imaging of $\sim$2-arcmin resolution at low frequencies (72-231 MHz). This is the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) Survey, and we have previously used a combination of visual inspection, cross-checks against the literature, and internal matching to identify the 'brightest' radio-sources ($S_{\mathrm{151MHz}} >$ 4 Jy) in the extragalactic catalogue (Galactic latitude, $|b| >$ 10 deg). We refer to these 1,863 sources as the GLEAM 4-Jy (G4Jy) Sample, and use radio images (of $\leq$ 45-arcsec resolution), and multi-wavelength information, to assess their morphology and identify the galaxy that is hosting the radio emission (where appropriate). Alongside this we conduct further checks against the literature, which we document in this paper for individual sources. Whilst the vast majority of the G4Jy Sample are active galactic nuclei with powerful radio-jets, we highlight that it also contains a nebula, two nearby, star-forming galaxies, a cluster relic, and a cluster halo. There are also three extended sources for which we are unable to infer the mechanism that gives rise to the low-frequency emission. In the G4Jy catalogue we provide mid-infrared identifications for 86% of the sources, and flag the remainder as: having an uncertain identification (129 sources), having a faint/uncharacterised mid-infrared host (126 sources), or it being inappropriate to specify a host (2 sources). For the subset of 129 sources, there is ambiguity concerning candidate host-galaxies, and this includes four sources (B0424$-$728, B0703$-$451, 3C 198, and 3C 403.1) where we question the existing identification., Comment: 37 pages (24 MB in size), 23 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASA, and now updated to match the final proof. The search for emission from weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter annihilation and decay has become a multi-pronged area of research not only targeting a diverse selection of astrophysical objects, but also taking advantage of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The decay of WIMP particles into standard model particles has been suggested as a possible channel for synchrotron emission to be detected at low radio frequencies. Here, we present the stacking analysis of a sample of 33 dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies with low-frequency (72 - 231 MHz) radio images from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. We produce radial surface brightness profiles of images centred upon each dSph galaxy with background radio sources masked. We remove ten fields from the stacking due to contamination from either poorly subtracted, bright radio sources or strong background gradients across the field. The remaining 23 dSph galaxies are stacked in an attempt to obtain a statistical detection of any WIMP-induced synchrotron emission in these systems. We find that the stacked radial brightness profile does not exhibit a statistically significant detection above the 95% confidence level of $\sim$1.5 mJy beam$^{-1}$. This work makes available a further 2,860deg$^2$ of the GLEAM survey, covering half of the accessible Galactic Plane, across twenty frequency bands sampling $72-231$MHz, with resolution $4'-2'$. Unlike previous GLEAM data releases, we used multi-scale clean to better deconvolve large-scale Galactic structure. For the Galactic longitude ranges $345^\circ < l < 67^\circ$, $180^\circ < l < 240^\circ$, we provide a compact source catalogue of 22,037 components selected from a 60-MHz bandwidth image centred at 200-MHz, with RMS noise $\approx10-20$mJy beam$^{-1}$ and position accuracy better than $2"$. The catalogue has a completeness of 50% at $\approx120$mJy, and a reliability of 99.86%. It covers Galactic latitudes $1^\circ\leq|b|\leq10^\circ$ toward the Galactic Centre and $|b|\leq10^\circ$ for other regions, and is available from Vizier; images covering $|b|\leq10^\circ$ for all longitudes are made available on the GLEAM VO server and SkyView., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted to PASA

We have detected 27 new supernova remnants (SNRs) using a new data release of the GLEAM survey from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope, including the lowest surface-brightness SNR ever detected, G0.1-9.7. Our method uses spectral fitting to the radio continuum to derive spectral indices for 26/27 candidates, and our low-frequency observations probe a steeper-spectrum population than previously discovered. None of the candidates have coincident Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mid-IR emission, further showing that the emission is non-thermal. Using pulsar associations we derive physical properties for six candidate SNRs, finding G0.1-9.7 may be younger than 10kyr. 60% of the candidates subtend areas larger than 0.2deg$^{2}$ on the sky, compared to $<25$% of previously-detected SNRs. We examined the latest data release from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey covering $345^\circ < l < 60^\circ$, $180^\circ < l < 240^\circ$, using these data and that of the Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer to follow up proposed candidate Supernova Remnants from other sources. Of the 101 candidates proposed in the region, we are able to definitively confirm ten as SNRs, tentatively confirm two as SNRs, and reclassify five as Hii regions. A further two are detectable in our images but difficult to classify; the remaining 82 are undetectable in these data. We also investigated the 18 unclassified Multi-Array Galactic Plane Imaging Survey (MAGPIS) candidate SNRs, newly confirming three as SNRs, reclassifying two as Hii regions, and exploring the unusual spectra and morphology of two others., Comment: 39 pages, 60 figures, 2 tables, accepted to PASA

The classical foundations of migration research date from the 1880s with Ravenstein's Laws of migration, which represent the first comparative analyses of internal migration. While his observations remain largely valid, the ensuing century has seen considerable progress in data collection practices and methods of analysis, which in turn has permitted theoretical advances in understanding the role of migration in population redistribution. Coupling the extensive range of migration data now available with these recent theoretical and methodological advances, we endeavour to advance beyond Ravenstein's understanding by examining the direction of population redistribution and comparing the impact of internal migration on patterns of human settlement in 27 European countries. Results show that the overall redistributive impact of internal migration is low in most European countries but the mechanisms differ across the continent. In Southern and Eastern Europe migration effectiveness is above average but is offset by low migration intensities, whereas in Northern and Western Europe high intensities are absorbed in reciprocal flows resulting in low migration effectiveness. About half the European countries are experiencing a process of concentration toward urbanised regions, particularly in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, whereas countries in the West and South are undergoing a process of population deconcentration. These results suggest that population deconcentration is now more common than it was in the 1990s when counterurbanisation was limited to Western Europe. The results show that 130 years on, Ravenstein's law of migration streams and counter-streams remains a central facet of migration dynamics, while underlining the importance of simple yet robust indices for the spatial analysis of migration.

Migration the main process shaping patterns of human settlement within and between countries. It is widely acknowledged to be integral to the process of human development as it plays a significant role in enhancing educational outcomes. At regional and national levels, internal migration underpins the efficient functioning of the economy by bringing knowledge and skills to the locations where they are needed. It is the multi-dimensional nature of migration that underlines its significance in the process of human development. Human mobility extends in the spatial domain from local travel to international migration, and in the temporal dimension from short-term stays to permanent relocations. Classification and measurement of such phenomena is inevitably complex, which has severely hindered progress in comparative research, with very few large-scale cross-national comparisons of migration. The linkages between migration and education have been explored in a separate line of inquiry that has predominantly focused on country-specific analyses as to the ways in which migration affects educational outcomes and how educational attainment affects migration behaviour. A recurrent theme has been the educational selectivity of migrants, which in turn leads to an increase of human capital in some regions, primarily cities, at the expense of others. Questions have long been raised as to the links between education and migration in response to educational expansion, but have not yet been fully answered because of the absence, until recently, of adequate data for comparative analysis of migration. In this paper, we bring these two separate strands of research together to systematically explore links between internal migration and education across a global sample of 57 countries at various stages of development, using data drawn from the IPUMS database., Comment: 66 pages

With the arrival of a number of wide-field snapshot image-plane radio transient surveys, there will be a huge influx of images in the coming years making it impossible to manually analyse the datasets. Automated pipelines to process the information stored in the images are being developed, such as the LOFAR Transients Pipeline, outputting light curves and various transient parameters. These pipelines have a number of tuneable parameters that require training to meet the survey requirements. This paper utilises both observed and simulated datasets to demonstrate different machine learning strategies that can be used to train these parameters. The datasets used are from LOFAR observations and we process the data using the LOFAR Transients Pipeline; however the strategies developed are applicable to any light curve datasets at different frequencies and can be adapted to different automated pipelines. We present Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of a faint and low-luminosity ($L_{\rm 1.4 GHz} < 10^{27}~\mbox{W Hz}^{-1}$) Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) sample. We select eight sources from deep radio observations that have radio spectra characteristic of a GPS or CSS source and an angular size of $\theta \lesssim 2$ arcsec, and detect six of them with the Australian Long Baseline Array. We determine their linear sizes, and model their radio spectra using Synchrotron Self Absorption (SSA) and Free Free Absorption (FFA) models. We derive statistical model ages, based on a fitted scaling relation, and spectral ages, based on the radio spectrum, which are generally consistent with the hypothesis that GPS and CSS sources are young and evolving. We resolve the morphology of one CSS source with a radio luminosity of $10^{25}~\mbox{W Hz}^{-1}$, and find what appear to be two hotspots spanning 1.7 kpc. We find that our sources follow the turnover-linear size relation, and that both homogenous SSA and an inhomogeneous FFA model can account for the spectra with observable turnovers. All but one of the FFA models do not require a spectral break to account for the radio spectrum, while all but one of the alternative SSA and power law models do require a spectral break to account for the radio spectrum. We conclude that our low-luminosity sample is similar to brighter samples in terms of their spectral shape, turnover frequencies, linear sizes, and ages, but cannot test for a difference in morphology., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the detection of an ultra-bright fast radio burst (FRB) from a modest, 3.4-day pilot survey with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The survey was conducted in a wide-field fly's-eye configuration using the phased-array-feed technology deployed on the array to instantaneously observe an effective area of $160$ deg$^2$, and achieve an exposure totaling $13200$ deg$^2$ hr. We constrain the position of FRB 170107 to a region $8'\times8'$ in size (90% containment) and its fluence to be $58\pm6$ Jy ms. The spectrum of the burst shows a sharp cutoff above $1400$ MHz, which could be either due to scintillation or an intrinsic feature of the burst. We present low-frequency spectral energy distributions of 60 known radio pulsars observed with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope. We searched the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) survey images for 200-MHz continuum radio emission at the position of all pulsars in the ATNF pulsar catalogue. For the 60 confirmed detections we have measured flux densities in 20 x 8 MHz bands between 72 and 231 MHz. We compare our results to existing measurements and show that the MWA flux densities are in good agreement., Comment: 20 pages. Accepted for publication in PASA
