Abstract

Purpose: Spanish-speaking families are a growing population that speech-language pathologists must be prepared to work with. To provide culturally responsive intervention, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) must understand the perspectives of Spanish-speaking caregivers when providing intervention. These values and experiences may differ from those of monolingual, mainstream culture. Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these experiences is also important. In this qualitative study, we explore the experiences of Spanish-speaking mothers whose children have received school-based speech-language intervention and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: We interviewed five Spanish-speaking mothers who were identified as having bilingual children who had or were currently receiving speech therapy, all through the public school system. The mothers participated in a semistructured interview to share their experiences with their children receiving intervention. We analyzed the transcripts through interpretative phenomenological analysis to identify salient themes among participants. All research team members reviewed and agreed upon themes to ensure credibility. Results: The findings revealed six group experiential themes: (a) lack of services and frustration with and barriers to accessing services, (b) greater improvements in English compared with Spanish, (c) bilingual speech therapy has positive effects on children and Spanish-speaking mothers, (d) family involvement in speech therapy is highly important, (e) family stress related to speech difficulties, and (f) pandemic negatively impacted children’s socialization and learning. Discussion: The results are discussed in the context of equity. Through understanding the experiences of Spanish-speaking mothers, SLPs can work to ensure service levels comparable with those of monolingual children and support bilingual acquisition. Abstract

The phenomenon of trial by ordeal has been observed across many cultures and eras, taking a number of different forms. Frequently described as 'irrational', the ordeal is a physical test, usually incorporating a supernatural element, which is used to determine the innocence or guilt of an accused person. This thesis looks at trial by ordeal alongside other related modes of divination and irrational proof in the ancient Near East, medieval and early modern Europe and twentieth century Africa to produce a conceptually coherent account of trial by ordeal and place it in a theoretical framework. In addition to this, the thesis considers the workings of the ordeal, looking at issues of correctness versus closure, legitimate and illegitimate uses of magic as well as the possibility, form and effect of human manipulation of the process. It concludes by offering a more nuanced definition of trial by ordeal set in the context of an understanding of its social functions and operation.

Abstract

The BooZi is a commercially available flavor-modifying device that claims to remove the negative flavor agents (congeners) from a number of different types of distilled spirits and wines. SPME was utilized for the extraction of the volatile and semi-volatile compounds within each sample. The analysis of the compounds found in the samples following exposure to the BooZi device were analyzed using a GC-MS. The most significant changes regarding the aroma profile of the distilled spirits were noticeable following 96 hours of exposure. The BooZi device was shown to be effective in reducing the concentration of a number of compounds, including 21 compounds having statistically significant changes. It was determined that the reduction of the compounds is associated with the mass of the product and the exposure time. This study has shown the effectiveness of the BooZi device in reducing the congeners within the distilled spirts samples tested. This will likely have an impact on the spirits' flavor and aroma. Abstract

Background: The ProtecT trial reported intention-to-treat analysis of men with localised prostate cancer (PCa) randomly allocated to active monitoring (AM), radical prostatectomy, and external beam radiotherapy. Objective: To determine report outcomes according to treatment received in men in randomised and treatment choice cohorts. Design, Setting, and Participants: This study focuses on secondary care. Men with clinically localised prostate cancer at one of nine UK centres were invited to participate in the treatment trial comparing AM, radical prostatectomy, and radiotherapy. Intervention: Two cohorts included 1643 men who agreed to be randomised; 997 declined randomisation and chose treatment. Outcome Measurements and Statistical Analysis: Health-related quality of life impacts on urinary, bowel, and sexual function were assessed using patient-reported outcome measures. Analysis was carried out based on treatment received for each cohort and on pooled estimates using meta-analysis. Differences were estimated with adjustment for known prognostic factors using propensity scores. Results and Limitations: According to treatment received, more men receiving AM died of PCa (AM 1.85%, surgery 0.67%, radiotherapy 0.73%), whilst this difference remained consistent with chance in the randomised cohort (p = 0.08); stronger evidence was found in the exploratory analyses (randomised plus choice cohort) when AM was compared with the combined radical treatment group (p = 0.003). There was also strong evidence that metastasis (AM 5.6%, surgery 2.4%, radiotherapy 2.7%) and disease progression (AM 20.35%, surgery 5.87%, radiotherapy 6.62%) were more common in the AM group. Compared with AM, there were higher risks of sexual dysfunction (95% at 6 mo) and urinary incontinence (55% at 6 mo) after surgery, and of sexual dysfunction (88% at 6 mo) and bowel dysfunction (5% at 6 mo) after radiotherapy. The key limitations are the potential for bias when comparing groups defined by treatment received and outdating of the interventions being evaluated during the lengthy follow-up required in trials of screen-detected PCa. Conclusions: Analyses according to treatment received showed increased rates of disease-related events and lower rates of patient-reported harms in men managed by AM compared with men managed by radical treatment, and stronger evidence of greater PCa mortality in the AM group. Patient Summary: More than 90 out of every 100 men with localised prostate cancer do not die of prostate cancer within 10 yr, irrespective of whether treatment is by means of monitoring, surgery, or radiotherapy. Side effects on sexual and bladder function are much better after active monitoring, but the risks of spreading of prostate cancer are more common.

Abstract

Chloroplast group IIA intron excision is postulated to involve up to 21 different nuclear-encoded proteins. Several studies, however, indicated that a plastid-encoded protein factor, specifically the MatK maturase, is the main splicing factor for chloroplast group IIA intron excision. As such, it is unclear which proteins are truly required for facilitating chloroplast group IIA intron excision. We propose that nuclear-encoded proteins form a splicing complex along with the MatK maturase to efficiently facilitate chloroplast group IIA intron excision. Co-immunoprecipitation assays were employed to test interactions among postulated nuclear-encoded splicing factors and the MatK maturase. Initial findings from co-IPs indicated possible interactions of MatK with the nuclear-encoded proteins RNC1, WTF1, RH3, RH25, RH53, and RH32. Clones of these nuclear-encoded proteins were generated for further interaction assays with the MatK maturase using a bacterial two-hybrid system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BackgroundSocio-demographic characteristics are associated with participating in cancer screening and trials. We compared the characteristics of those responding with those not responding to a single invitation for PSA testing for prostate cancer as part of the Cluster randomised triAl of PSA testing for Prostate cancer (CAP).MethodsAge, rurality and deprivation among 197,763 men from 271 cluster-randomised primary care centres in the UK were compared between those responding (n=90,300) and not responding (n=100,953) to a prostate cancer testing invitation.Results There was little difference in age between responders and non-responders. Responders were slightly more likely to come from urban rather than rural areas and were slightly less deprived than those who did not respond. ConclusionThese data indicate similarities in age and only minor differences in deprivation and urban location between responders and non-responders. These differences were smaller, but in the same direction as observed in other screening trials.

Abstract

Reductions in basal metabolism and growth rate appear to contribute to decreased heat production of Bos indicus breeds. Lower metabolic rate may be due to smaller organ size and lower metabolic activity. Liver and heart account for high percentage of metabolic activity relative to their weight, and at a cellular level, mitochondria are responsible for producing energy for cellular maintenance. Our objective was to determine liver and heart weight and evaluate expression of key mitochondrial proteins in Bos indicus (80-100% Brahman) and Bos taurus (80-100% Angus) steers. Steers (n = 14 per breed) were harvested at the university meat laboratory. After evisceration, livers and hearts were weighed, and samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen for further analyses. Western blotting was used to determine expression of proteins in mitochondrial energy production: citrate synthase, a marker of mitochondria content; succinate dehydrogenase B (SDH-B), complex II; cytochrome c oxidase subunit IV, complex IV; and ATP synthase subunit 5A (ATP5A), complex V. Data were analyzed using an unpaired t-test in SASJMP. Although steers were similar age at slaughter (P = 0.84), Brahman steers weighed less (P < 0.0001) and thus produced lighter carcasses (P < 0.0001) and smaller livers and hearts (P < 0.0001). On a relative basis (kg organ/kg BW), Brahman tended to possess smaller hearts (P = 0.06) and smaller livers (P = 0.03). Expression of mitochondria proteins in heart did not differ between breeds (P > 0.3). However, Brahman exhibited lower expression of SDH-B (P = 0.005) but tended to have higher expression of ATP5A (P = 0.07) in liver. Altogether, this supports that smaller organ size is a contributing factor to lower heat production in heat-tolerant Brahman steers, and shifts in mitochondria protein expression in liver may impact energy metabolism at the cellular level.
