2. Exploring the Role of Social Media Literacy in Adolescents' Experiences with Personalization: A Norwegian Qualitative Study

- Abstract
Social media platforms rely on algorithms to filter and select content, thereby personalizing every individual's social media experience. Many use social media without awareness of this personalization and its impact, pointing to a need to both understand and improve literacy among active social media users. This qualitative study addresses adolescents' social media literacy through an investigation of their experiences with personalization on social media, aiming for a nuanced perspective of their outcomes. A thematic analysis of eight focus group interviews with 47 students aged 15-19 years uncovered two main themes: (1) diverse levels of adolescents' awareness and familiarity with personalization and (2) positive, negative, and mixed emotions toward personalization. Theme one uncovered that although the adolescents were largely unfamiliar with the terminology, when prompted, most of them could provide examples of personalization, whereas theme two revealed that adolescents appreciated relevant content and yet were uneasy about certain features.

10. Integrating Faith and Learning Using a Biblical Concept-Based Curriculum.

The integration of faith and learning (IFL) in nursing has deep historical roots. However, barriers have developed to successful IFL in Christian higher education. A biblically based concept curriculum (BBCC) is proposed that emphasizes deep learning, critical thinking, and student-centered learning. Examples are provided of BBCC curricular integration, pedagogical methods, and assessments related to the IFL. 11. Predictors of Food Insecurity and Food Assistance Program Usage Among Puerto Ricans Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Background/Objectives: Puerto Rican households often face elevated rates of food insecurity. Frequently, households experiencing food insecurity turn to federal and emergency nutrition assistance for urgent or prolonged aid. This study analyzes factors influencing food insecurity and food assistance program involvement among Puerto Ricans in Holyoke, Massachusetts, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Using a combination of community-based participatory recruitment, purposive sampling, and web-based tools, we collected 284 survey responses. Our paper employed Pearson's chi-square, logistic regression, and hierarchical linear models to assess relationships between demographic and household attributes and food access outcomes. Results: Variables such as having children in the household and age significantly influenced food relief participation and food insecurity outcomes. Puerto Rican heritage and low educational attainment were strong predictors of obtaining federal food aid. Low-income participants disproportionately faced food shortages and depended on emergency food initiatives. Our findings indicate that demographic and household factors significantly influence food insecurity and accessibility. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that the pandemic made it challenging for households to obtain consistent, safe, and affordable nourishment. The impacts were unequally spread; hence, Puerto Rican communities and low-income groups were most affected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Understanding Food Insecurity and Participation in Food Assistance Programs among Hispanic/Latino Residents of Hialeah, Florida, before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The 63.6 million Hispanic individuals living in the United States constitute the largest ethnic or racial minority group in the country. Hispanic/Latino households report a high prevalence of food insecurity, and often, food-insecure individuals cope by turning to emergency and federal food assistance programs for immediate or long-term assistance. This paper focuses on Hialeah, Florida, a predominantly Hispanic/Latino city in Miami-Dade County. It examines which demographic factors influence participation in food assistance programs and the occurrences of periods of disrupted food access. This study examines two questions: (1) What factors are associated with participation in food assistance programs? (2) To what extent did study participants use food assistance programs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic? We conducted a survey and collected 684 responses from April to August 2022. We gathered data on participants' identities, household attributes, and their usage of federal and emergency food assistance programs. We used Pearson's chi-square tests to identify significant associations between food assistance usage, food access, and respondents' demographic characteristics. We also used binary logistic regression models to assess probabilities. The findings of this research are significant, indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated food access challenges in Hispanic/Latino households in 2022. The data also revealed that low-income households, respondents below the age of 40, individuals born in the United States, those with low educational attainment, and those living in multifamily households had the highest likelihood of using food assistance programs. Single- and non-single-parent households, employment status, languages spoken at home, and number of children in the household were also statistically significant factors in predicting food assistance usage. The COVID-19 pandemic, a global health crisis, was acutely felt in the labour market for many young workers. Importantly, precarious employment, identified as an emergent social determinant of health, may negatively affect the mental health and well-being of young workers. To this end, we engaged with young workers to understand their workplace needs and challenges in the COVID-19 era and hear their recommendations for action. Semi-structured interviews and a graphic recording focus group were conducted with 33 young workers aged 18–26 years old in Manitoba, Canada, who had worked a minimum of 30 hours per week prior to COVID-19 onset and were living independent of their parents. Analysis involved delineating units of meaning from the data, clustering these to form thematic statements and extracting themes. Second-level analysis involved applying themes and sub-themes to a social determinants of health framework. The multifaceted, compounding realities of young workers' pre-COVID-19 employment situations were amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, adversely impacting young worker's mental health. Unique findings from this study highlight the generational differences in this cohort, who are opposed to participating in fragmented systemic structures (neoliberalism) and inequitable employment conditions, and who yearn for social inclusion and work-life balance. Their recommendations for government and employers call for permanent and stable employment opportunities, economic and mental health supports, and space to be heard and valued, as they navigate the many life course challenges as emerging adults. Societies are dependent on young workers to develop and support the Canadian economy for future generations. Thus, it is a critical that recommendations proposed by young workers in this study be acted upon and implemented to provide an equitable, stable, and supportive future for young workers in Canada and beyond. 15. Defying the Food Desert, Food Swamp, and Supermarket Redlining Stereotypes in Detroit: Comparing the Distribution of Food Outlets in 2013 and 2023.

- Abstract
Despite the numerous food studies conducted in Detroit, none have assessed changes in the food landscape over a decade. No previous study has systematically analyzed food store closures in the city either. We will address these oversights by examining the distribution of food outlets in the city ten years apart. This paper probes the following questions: (1) How has the distribution of Detroit's food outlets changed in the decade between 2013 and 2023? (2) Does Detroit fit the definition of a food desert in 2013 or 2023? (3) Does Detroit fit the definition of a food swamp in 2013 or 2023? (4) Has supermarket redlining occurred in Detroit in 2013 or 2023? (5) How is population decline related to food outlet distribution? (6) How do food store closures impact food store distribution? We conducted exhaustive searches to collect information on thousands of food outlets from Data Axle, Google, and Bing. The data were analyzed and mapped in SPSS 28 and ArcGIS 10.8. We compared 3499 food outlets identified in 2013 with 2884 identified in 2023. We expanded our search for food outlets in 2023 and found an additional 611 food outlets in categories not studied in 2013. The study's findings are significant as they unearth evidence of extensive population decline—driven by Black flight—and a vanishing food infrastructure. Detroit lost more than 600 food outlets between 2013 and 2023, a staggering number that underscores the severity of the issue. Moreover, in 2023, we documented food store closures and found 1305 non-operational or closed food outlets in the city. Regardless of the neighborhood's racial composition, the household median income, or the educational attainment of residents, food store closures were widespread in 2023; 27.3% of the food outlets identified that year were defunct. Despite the massive food store closures, Detroit did not fit the description of a food desert; each of the city's 54 neighborhoods had between 7 and 300 food outlets. The food swamp thesis did not accurately describe the city either, as supermarkets/large grocery stores were intermingled with convenience and corner stores in both study periods. The data did not find evidence of supermarket redlining, as supermarkets/large grocery stores were found in formerly redlined neighborhoods alongside dollar stores and variety stores in both study periods. 17. Micro-scale bio-inspired structured polymer surfaces for tissue adhesion

There are many cases when it would be beneficial to provide reliable, reversible adhesion at a tissue-device interface. There are currently many adhesion mechanisms used during surgical procedures such as graspers, vacuum cups and hooks. However, these are known to cause some scale of tissue trauma. This thesis investigates the viability of using a bio-inspired, structured polymer surfaces to provide wet adhesion forces through the formation of liquid bridges on the tip of discrete pillars. The mechanism described involves a contribution from both Stefan forces and capillary forces to provide the total adhesion force. A main factor to this work is the ability to successfully, repeatedly and reliably fabricate polymer surfaces at a micron scale with varying geometry, specifically in terms of pillar spacing. The substrate should be flexible and have the ability to tune the wettability. A number of lithography techniques have been explored for a range of polymers, finally settling on a nano-imprint lithography technique with Poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the polymer. Experimental adhesion tests have been performed and it has been found, that for such an adhesion mechanism to be successful, an optimal contact angle must be reached. If the contact angle is too high, repulsive forces in convex menisci will form and the adhesion will be low as a result. If the contact angle is too low, the capillary length : pillar height ratio results in the surface acting super-hydrophobic and completely wetting the pillars, preventing the formation of liquid bridges, and again resulting in low adhesion, it is proposed that such a mechanism would occur at contact angles lower than 50°. A mathematical model has been investigated, encompassing both the Stefan and adhesion forces and the limitations of this have been discussed in relation to the complexity of this system.

Limited research has been carried out on Indigenous young people transitioning out of care in Canada. This article provides a coherent and meaningful account of the journey of aging out of care in the province of Manitoba, as presented by 17 Indigenous care leavers. Using a qualitative multilevel approach grounded in first-person narratives, this study focused on incorporating and elevating the voices of Indigenous care leavers. Participants detailed their experiences of planning for the transition and aging out of care, and described their life post-care. The care leavers expressed that the Child and Family Services-led process of planning for and transitioning out of care was unclear and failed to engage them as partners, and as a result left them ill-prepared for life post-care. Additionally, participants’ experiences serve as evidence of enduring gaps in transition supports, namely in mental health and interpersonal supports. These supports were often unavailable or inaccessible, challenges that were amplified during participants’ transition out of care and in the post-care period. The experiential knowledge from this study contributes valuable information to inform responsive child welfare transition policies and practices that are reflective of the experiences and needs of the population it intends to serve. Most food access studies focus on large cities, examine traditional grocery stores, and only consider operational food outlets. This siloed approach exposes a gap in food access literature. Therefore, as a part of our assessment of Flint's food landscape, we examined closed food outlets in the city and surrounding townships. We investigated the relationship between the racial composition of census tracts and the number and type of defunct food outlets identified. We used Data Axle to collect and verify data on open and closed food outlets between September 2020 and December 2021. We made a final verification of the food outlet closures in June 2022. We used ArcGIS 10.8.1 and SPSS Version 28 to map and analyze the data. We used negative binomial regression models to determine differences in the likelihood of having an additional closed food outlet in census tracts with low and high percentages of Black residents. We also investigated the relationship between a census tract's median income and the likelihood of having an additional closed food outlet. There were 173 closed food outlets; 81 were in Flint, and 92 were in surrounding townships. The most frequently closed food outlets were restaurants; they accounted for 45.1% of the closures. The mean number of closed food venues in census tracts where less than 40% of the residents were Black was 1.5. The mean was similar in census tracts where 40% or more of the residents were Black; it was 1.6. This difference was not significant. However, the median income of a census tract was a significant predictor of the likelihood of having an additional closed food outlet. Every one-thousand-dollar increase in median income resulted in a 2% less likelihood of having an additional closed food outlet. The results of this study show that there is more to the food landscape of a city than its operational food outlets. Focusing exclusively on active food outlets does not accurately depict a city's food infrastructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primary objective of this study was to describe the food landscape of Flint, Michigan, and the surrounding townships. We investigated the relationship between the location of food outlets and the racial composition of census tracts. We collected data from multiple sources; however, Data Axle, a repository of information on the U.S. and Canadian businesses, was our primary data source. Data were collected and verified between September 2020 and December 2021. The final fact-checking was completed in June 2022. We used ArcGIS 10.8.1 and SPSS Version 28 to map and analyze the data. We conducted negative binomial regression analyses to identify the difference in the likelihood of finding food retailers in census tracts where the percentage of Black residents was low and those where the percentage of Blacks was high. The article examines 1,137 food retailers in the study area: 407 were in Flint, and the remainder in the surrounding townships. Restaurants—especially fast food and take-out establishments—dominated the food environment. In addition, small groceries and convenience stores proliferated in the grocery store category. The racial composition of the census tracts mattered. Census tracts in which more than 40% of the residents are Black have a mean of 7.6 food outlets. In comparison, census tracts in which 40% or less of the residents are Black have a mean of 11.3 food outlets; the difference is significant. Census tracts with a high percentage of Blacks also had significantly fewer restaurants. The results of this study show Flint's food landscape to be more complex and robust than described in earlier studies. It underscores the point that researchers should not rely solely on documenting the presence of supermarkets or traditional grocery stores when addressing food insecurity and food access. In the case of Flint, such food outlets comprise only 2.2% of the food landscape. Focusing exclusively on these food retailers misses several important types of food venues that residents rely on to secure food. To assess and describe the aetiology and management of febrile illness in children with primary or acquired immunodeficiency at high risk of serious bacterial infection, as seen in emergency departments in tertiary hospitals. Prospective data on demographics, presenting features, investigations, microbiology, management, and outcome of patients within the ‘Biomarker Validation in HR patients’ database in PERFORM, were analysed. Immunocompromised children (N = 492); 94.3% proven/presumed bacterial (N = 164), 66.1% proven/presumed viral (N = 84), and 93.2% unknown bacterial or viral infections (N = 177). Mortality was 1.9% (N = 11) and 87.1% made full recovery (N = 522). Conclusion: The aetiology of febrile illness in immunocompromised children is diverse. In one-third of cases, no cause for the fever will be identified. Justification for standard intravenous antibiotic treatment for every febrile immunocompromised child is debatable, yet effective. Better clinical decision-making tools and new biomarkers are needed for this population. What is Known:• Immunosuppressed children are at high risk for morbidity and mortality of serious bacterial and viral infection, but often present with fever as only clinical symptom.• Current diagnostic measures in this group are not specific to rule out bacterial infection, and positivity rates of microbiological cultures are low. What is New:• Febrile illness and infectious complications remain a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in HR children, yet management is effective.• The aetiology of febrile illness in immunocompromised children is diverse, and development of pathways for early discharge or cessation of intravenous antibiotics is debatable, and requires better clinical decision-making tools and biomarkers.

38. Novel pelagiphage isolate Polarivirus skadiis a polar specialist that dominates SAR11-associated bacteriophage communities at high latitudes

- Abstract
The SAR11 clade are the most abundant members of surface marine bacterioplankton and a critical component of global biogeochemical cycles. Similarly, pelagiphages that infect SAR11 are ubiquitous and highly abundant in the oceans. Pelagiphages are predicted to shape SAR11 community structures and increase carbon turnover throughout the oceans. Yet, ecological drivers of host and niche specificity of pelagiphage populations are poorly understood. Here we report the global distribution of a novel pelagiphage called “Polarivirus skadi”, which is the sole representative of a novel genus. P. skadiwas isolated from the Western English Channel using a cold-water ecotype of SAR11 as bait. P. skadiis closely related to the globally dominant pelagiphage HTVC010P. Along with other HTVC010P-type viruses, P. skadibelongs to a distinct viral family within the order Caudovirales, for which we propose the name Ubiqueviridae. Metagenomic read recruitment identified P. skadias one of the most abundant pelagiphages on Earth. P. skadiis a polar specialist, replacing HTVC010P at high latitudes. Experimental evaluation of P. skadihost range against cold- and warm-water SAR11 ecotypes supported cold-water specialism. Relative abundance of P. skadiin marine metagenomes correlated negatively with temperature, and positively with nutrients, available oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations. In contrast, relative abundance of HTVC010P correlated negatively with oxygen and positively with salinity, with no significant correlation to temperature. The majority of other pelagiphages were scarce in most marine provinces, with a few representatives constrained to discrete ecological niches. Our results suggest that pelagiphage populations persist within a global viral seed bank, with environmental parameters and host availability selecting for a few ecotypes that dominate ocean viromes.

41. Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience : Informing a Climate-Friendly Food System Procurement Strategy at UBC

When considering and reflecting on our food systems, sustainability is increasingly becoming an issue of focus and action. Within the concept of sustainability, biodiversity is a key issue impacted by many components of food systems. From an ecological and agricultural perspective, biodiversity is important for sustainability as it contributes to ecosystem health and function, ecosystem resilience, and climate change mitigation (Campbell et al., 2008). Through these functions, biodiversity also contributes to food system productivity and resilience (Isbell et al., 2015). As we experience the impacts of climate change such as increased temperature and extreme weather events, biodiversity is becoming increasingly important to enable our food systems to persevere (Isbell et al., 2015). Currently, many aspects of our production systems are contributing to the loss of biodiversity. Most conventional agricultural practices and land-uses are drivers of global biodiversity loss, and contribute to approximately one-third of greenhouse gas emissions (Dudley & Alexander, 2017; Crippa et al., 2021). Evidently, continuation of the practices will only contribute to the agricultural challenges associated with global warming. In the context of the University of British Columbia’s (UBC’s) food system, biodiversity has been identified as an important food systems issue, as described in the Climate Action Plan (CAP) 2030. From this, the need for biodiversity-specific procurement information was recognized. Contributing to a campus wide Climate-Friendly Food System Procurement Strategy, this project aims to inform development focusing on food system biodiversity and supply-chain resilience. This goal is achieved through several actions. Primary data was collected following Community Based Action Research (CBAR) methodology, incorporating critical stakeholders (Burns et al., 2011). Stakeholders include UBC food procurement representatives, UBC researchers, and student organizations. Secondary data was also collected through a review of available literature and an environmental scan of institutions and municipalities. Several issues are investigated by the primary data collection: 1. Ideal biodiverse food procurement, 2. Gaps and barriers with biodiverse food procurement, and 3. Demands to achieve biodiverse food procurement. Primary data results identified several sub-themes within each concept as follows: 1. Local and seasonal foods, best-practice producers, and indicators and measurement, biodiversity and resilience definition, minimized food waste, and accessible pricing; 2. Perceived procurement costs, perceived student costs, consumers demands, and education; 3. Framework for a circular food system, and creation of a charter. Results from the secondary research explore a relatively broad range of topics relating to findings from the primary data collection. The importance of biodiversity, associated farm practices, foods promoting biodiversity, and producers locality are described. Certifications and the cost of biodiverse foods are also discussed. From our primary and secondary results, short-term, mid-term, and long-term recommendations are synthesized and described. Areas of opportunity for future research are also provided and discussed. Short and mid-term recommendations: 1. Look for eco-labels 2. Perennial crops over annuals 3. Diversify foods and varieties 4. Diversify suppliers 5. Buy directly from farmers 6. Buy seasonally Long-term recommendations: 1. Support ecological farms 2. Create a Biodiversity Action Charter 3. Create a permanent paid position Future research: 1. Increased cost of procuring biodiverse foods 2. This work-in-progress paper examines adolescents’ experiences with personalized content on social media and how it influences them. Through group interviews with Norwegian students aged 15 to 19 years, we investigated their awareness, comprehension, and emotions towards targeted and personalized content. The sample consisted of 48 participants (20 males and 28 females). The preliminary analysis uncovered three themes: 1) Encounters, awareness, and comprehension, 2) Emotions, and 3) Increasing use and appreciation.
