Optical control and read-out of the ground state spin structure has been demonstrated for defect states in crystalline semiconductors, including the diamond NV- center, and these are promising systems for quantum technologies. Molecular organic semiconductors offer synthetic control of spin placement, in contrast to current limitations in these crystalline systems. Here we report the discovery of spin-optical addressability in a diradical molecule that comprises two trityl radical groups coupled via a fluorene bridge. We demonstrate the three important properties that enable operation as a spin-photon interface: (i) triplet and singlet spin states show photoluminescence peaked at 640 and 700 nm respectively; this allows easy optical measurement of ground state spin. (ii) the ground state spin exchange is small (~60 {\mu}eV) that allows preparation of ground state spin population. This can be achieved by spin-selective excited state intersystem crossing, and we report up to 8% microwave-driven contrast in photoluminescence. (iii) both singlet and triplet manifolds have near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, which is in contrast to the near-zero quantum yields in prior reports of molecular diradicals. Our results establish these tuneable open-shell organic molecules as a platform to engineer tailor-made spin-optical interfaces.

Through the development of new non-fullerene electron acceptor (NFA) materials, such as Y6 and its molecular derivatives, the power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have now exceeded 19%. However, despite this rapid progress, our fundamental understanding of the unique optical and electronic properties of these Y-series NFAs is lacking, and this currently limits progress in material design. In this work, we provide a detailed computational-experimental characterisation of the archetypal NFA, Y6. To explain the significant broadening and red shift of the absorption spectrum observed when moving from the solution phase to the solid state, we first rule out more typical causes, such as J-aggregation. Instead, by considering the role of charge transfer (CT) excitations and their mixing with Frenkel exciton (FE) states, we can computationally reproduce the experimental absorption spectra of Y6 with excellent accuracy. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we provide evidence for this dense manifold of FE-CT hybrid electronic excitations in Y6 through the prominent sub-picosecond relaxation events following supra band gap excitation. Furthermore, through sub band gap excitation, we also find states with polaronic character in Y6 that are in a dynamic equilibrium with the FE-CT hybrid states. Magnetic resonance spectroscopies reveal that these polaronic states are polaron pairs, most likely located on neighbouring Y6 molecules, not free charge carriers, as has been previously suggested. Thus, this new understanding of how the solid-state packing motif directly controls the optical and electronic properties of Y-series NFAs opens the door to intelligently design NFA materials to further increase OPV performance., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures

The development of luminescent organic radicals has resulted in materials with excellent optical properties for near-infrared (NIR) emission. Applications of light generation in this range span from bioimaging to surveillance. Whilst the unpaired electron arrangements of radicals enable efficient radiative transitions within the doublet-spin manifold in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), their performance is limited by non-radiative pathways introduced in electroluminescence. Here, we present a host:guest design for OLEDs that exploits energy transfer with demonstration of up to 9.6% external quantum efficiency (EQE) for 800 nm emission. The tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl-triphenylamine (TTM-TPA) radical guest is energy-matched to the triplet state in a charge-transporting anthracene-derivative host. We show from optical spectroscopy and quantum-chemical modelling that reversible host-guest triplet-doublet energy transfer allows efficient harvesting of host triplet excitons.

Molecules present a versatile platform for quantum information science, and are candidates for sensing and computation applications. Robust spin-optical interfaces are key to harnessing the quantum resources of materials. To date, carbon-based candidates have been non-luminescent, which prevents optical read-out. Here we report the first organic molecules displaying both efficient luminescence and near-unity generation yield of high-spin multiplicity excited states. This is achieved by designing an energy resonance between emissive doublet and triplet levels, here on covalently coupled tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) methyl-carbazole radicals (TTM-1Cz) and anthracene. We observe the doublet photoexcitation delocalise onto the linked acene within a few picoseconds and subsequently evolve to a pure high spin state (quartet for monoradicals, quintet for biradical) of mixed radical-triplet character near 1.8 eV. These high-spin states are coherently addressable with microwaves even at 295 K, with optical read-out enabled by intersystem crossing to emissive states. Furthermore, for the biradical, on return to the ground state the previously uncorrelated radical spins either side of the anthracene show strong spin correlation. Our approach simultaneously supports a high efficiency of initialisation, spin manipulations and light-based read-out at room temperature. The integration of luminescence and high-spin states creates an organic materials platform for emerging quantum technologies.

There is compelling evidence that charge carriers in organic semiconductors (OSs) self-localize in nano-scale space because of dynamic disorder. Yet, some OSs, in particular recently emerged high-mobility organic molecular crystals, feature reduced mobility at increasing temperature, a hallmark for delocalized band transport. Here we present the temperature-dependent mobility in two record-mobility OSs: DNTT (dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]-thiophene), and its alkylated derivative, C8-DNTT-C8. By combining terahertz photoconductivity measurements with fully atomistic non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we show that while both crystals display a power-law decrease of the mobility (\mu) with temperature (T, following: \mu \propto T^(-n)), the exponent n differs substantially. Modelling provides n values in good agreement with experiments and reveals that the differences in the falloff parameter between the two chemically closely related semiconductors can be traced to the delocalization of the different states thermally accessible by charge carriers, which in turn depends on the specific electronic band structure of the two systems. The active layer crystallinity has long been associated with favourable organic solar cells (OSCs) properties such as high mobility and Fill Factor. In particular, this applies to acceptor materials such as fullerene-derivatives and the most recent Non-Fullerene Acceptors (NFAs), which are now surpassing 19% of Power Conversion Efficiency. Despite these advantages are being commonly attributed to their 3-dimensional crystal packing motif in the single crystal, the bridge that links the acceptor crystal packing from single crystals to solar cells has not clearly been shown yet. In this work, we investigate the molecular organisation of seven NFAs (o-IDTBR, IDIC, ITIC, m-ITIC, 4TIC, 4TICO, m-4TICO), following the evolution of their packing motif in single-crystals, powder and thin films made with pure NFAs and donor:NFA blends. In general, we observed a good correlation between the NFA single crystal packing and their molecular arrangement in the bulk heterojunction. However, the NFA packing motif is not directly affecting the device parameters but it provide an impact on the material propensity to form highly crystalline domain in the blend. Although that NFA crystallinity is required to obtain high mobility, the domain purity is more important to limit the bimolecular recombination and to obtain high efficiency organic solar cells., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

The energetic landscape at the interface between electron donating and accepting molecular materials favors efficient conversion of intermolecular charge-transfer states (CTS) into free charge carriers in high-performance organic solar cells. Here, we elucidate how interfacial energetics, charge generation and radiative recombination are affected by structural ordering. We experimentally determine the CTS binding energy of a series of model, small molecule donor-acceptor blends, where the used acceptors (B2PYMPM, B3PYMPM and B4PYMPM) differ only in the nitrogen position of their lateral pyridine rings. We find that the formation of an ordered, face-on molecular packing in B4PYMPM is beneficial to efficient, field-independent charge separation, leading to fill factors over 70% in photovoltaic devices. This is rationalized by a comprehensive computational protocol showing that, compared to the more amorphous and isotropically oriented B2PYMPM, the higher order of the B4PYMPM molecules provides more delocalized CTS. Furthermore, we find no correlation between the quantum efficiency of radiative free charge carrier recombination and the bound or unbound nature of the CTS. This work highlights the importance of structural ordering at donor-acceptor interfaces for efficient free carrier generation and shows that more ordering and less bound CT states do not preclude efficient radiative recombination.

Driven by the rapid development of non-fullerene electron acceptors (NFAs), the power conversion efficiencies of organic solar cells (OSCs) have reached levels suitable for commercial applications. However, the poor operational stability of high-performance NFA OSCs is a remaining fundamental challenge that must be addressed. Whilst previous studies have primarily focused on the NFA component, we consider here the degradation pathways of both the donor and acceptor materials in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend. Here, we show that light soaking greatly increases the energetic disorder and trap state density in PM6, with little effect on Y6. This is corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, which reveals increased recombination via trapped polarons on PM6 after light soaking. In addition, ultrafast optical spectroscopy studies on light-soaked samples show that PM6 singlet excitons are rapidly converted into interchain polaron pairs on sub-100 fs timescales; this process outcompetes electron transfer to Y6, significantly reducing the charge generation yield of the blend. We make similar observations in the parent polymer, PBDB-T, indicating that this class of donor materials, used in most high-performance OSCs to date, are intrinsically unstable to light soaking. Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) enables organic semiconductors with charge transfer (CT)-type excitons to convert dark triplet states into bright singlets via a reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) process. Here, we consider the role of the dielectric environment in a range of TADF materials with varying changes in dipole moment upon optical excitation. In a dipolar reference emitter, TXO-TPA, environmental reorganisation after excitation in both solution and doped films triggers the formation of the full CT product state. This lowers the singlet excitation energy by 0.3 eV and minimises the singlet-triplet energy gap ({\Delta}EST). Using impulsive Raman measurements, we observe the emergence of two (reactant-inactive) modes at 412 and 813 cm-1 as a vibrational fingerprint of the CT product. In contrast, the dielectric environment plays a smaller role in the electronic excitations of a less dipolar material, 4CzIPN. Quantum-chemical calculations corroborate the appearance of these new product modes in TXO-TPA and show that the dynamic environment fluctuations are large compared to {\Delta}EST. The analysis of the energy-time trajectories and the corresponding free energy functions reveals that the dielectric environment significantly reduces the activation energy for rISC, thus increasing the rISC rate by up to three orders of magnitude when compared to a vacuum environment., Comment: 67 pages, 7 main-text figures

Engineering a low singlet-triplet energy gap ({\Delta}EST) is necessary for efficient reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) in delayed fluorescence (DF) organic semiconductors, but results in a small radiative rate that limits performance in LEDs. Here, we study a model DF material, BF2, that exhibits a strong optical absorption (absorption coefficient =3.8x10^5 cm^-1) and a relatively large {\Delta}EST of 0.2 eV. In isolated BF2 molecules, intramolecular rISC is slow (260 {\mu}s), but in aggregated films, BF2 generates intermolecular CT (inter-CT) states on picosecond timescales. In contrast to the microsecond intramolecular rISC that is promoted by spin-orbit interactions in most isolated DF molecules, photoluminescence-detected magnetic resonance shows that these inter-CT states undergo rISC mediated by hyperfine interactions on a ~24 ns timescale and have an average electron-hole separation of >1.5 nm. Transfer back to the emissive singlet exciton then enables efficient DF and LED operation. Charge transport in organic semiconductors is notoriously extremely sensitive to the presence of disorder, both internal and external (i.e. related to the interactions with the dielectric layer), especially for n-type materials. Internal dynamic disorder stems from large thermal fluctuations both in intermolecular transfer integrals and (molecular) site energies in weakly interacting van der Waals solids and sources transient localization of the charge carriers. The molecular vibrations that drive transient localization typically operate at low-frequency (< a-few-hundred cm-1), which renders it difficult to assess them experimentally. Hitherto, this has prevented the identification of clear molecular design rules to control and reduce dynamic disorder. In addition, the disorder can also be external, being controlled by the gate insulator dielectric properties. Here we report on a comprehensive study of charge transport in two closely related n-type molecular organic semiconductors using a combination of temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated by electrical measurements, theory and simulations. Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications, including thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and neuromorphic computing devices. It is commonly assumed that low conductivities in these materials result primarily from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counter-ions. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study rebutting this belief. Using a newly developed doping technique, we find the conductivity of several classes of high-mobility conjugated polymers to be strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder but poorly correlated with ionic size, suggesting that Coulomb traps do not limit transport. A general model for interacting electrons in highly doped polymers is proposed and carefully parameterized against atomistic calculations, enabling the calculation of electrical conductivity within the framework of transient localisation theory. Theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental data, providing insights into the disordered-limited nature of charge transport and suggesting new strategies to further improve conductivities.

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) using non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have now reached 18%. However, this is still lower than inorganic solar cells, for which PCEs >20% are commonplace. A key reason is that OSCs still show low open-circuit voltages (Voc) relative to their optical band gaps, attributed to non-radiative recombination. For OSCs to compete with inorganics in efficiency, all non-radiative loss pathways must be identified and where possible, removed. Here, we show that in most NFA OSCs, the majority of charge recombination at open-circuit proceeds via formation of non-emissive NFA triplet excitons (T1); in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend, this fraction reaches 90%, contributing 60 mV to the reduction of Voc. We develop a new design to prevent recombination via this non-radiative channel through the engineering of significant hybridisation between the NFA T1 and the spin-triplet charge transfer exciton (3CTE). We model that the rate of the back charge transfer from 3CTE to T1 can be reduced by an order of magnitude, allowing re-dissociation of the 3CTE. We then demonstrate NFA systems where T1 formation is suppressed. Efficient energy transport is highly desirable for organic semiconductor (OSC) devices such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, and photocatalytic systems. However, photo-generated excitons in OSC films mostly occupy highly localized states over their lifetime. Energy transport is hence thought to be mainly mediated by the site-to-site hopping of localized excitons, limiting exciton diffusion coefficients to below ~10^{-2} cm^2/s with corresponding diffusion lengths below ~50 nm. Here, using ultrafast optical microscopy combined with non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we present evidence for a new highly-efficient energy transport regime: transient exciton delocalization, where energy exchange with vibrational modes allows excitons to temporarily re-access spatially extended states under equilibrium conditions. In films of highly-ordered poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanofibers, prepared using living crystallization-driven self-assembly, we show that this enables exciton diffusion constants up to 1.1+-0.1 cm^2/s and diffusion lengths of 300+-50 nm. Our results reveal the dynamic interplay between localized and delocalized exciton configurations at equilibrium conditions, calling for a re-evaluation of the basic picture of exciton dynamics. Exciton-polaritons in organic materials are hybrid states that result from the strong interaction of photons and the bound excitons that these materials host. Organic polaritons hold great interest for optoelectronic applications, however progress towards this end has been impeded by the lack of a first principles approach that quantifies light-matter interactions in these systems, and which would allow the formulation of molecular design rules. Here we develop such a first principles approach, quantifying light-matter interactions. We exemplify our approach by studying variants of the conjugated polymer polydiacetylene, and we show that a large polymer conjugation length is critical towards strong exciton-photon coupling, hence underlying the importance of pure structures without static disorder. By comparing to our experimental reflectivity measurements, we show that the coupling of excitons to vibrations, manifested by phonon side bands in the absorption, has a strong impact on the magnitude of light-matter coupling over a range of frequencies. Our approach opens the way towards a deeper understanding of polaritons in organic materials, and we highlight that a quantitatively accurate calculation of the exciton-photon interaction would require accounting for all sources of disorder self-consistently.

We investigate the viability of highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFA) by taking into consideration efficiency loss channels and stability issues caused by triplet excitons (TE) formation. OSCs based on a blend of the conjugated donor polymer PBDB-T and ITIC as acceptor were fabricated and investigated with electrical, optical and spin-sensitive methods. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters of molecular TEs and charge transfer TEs in ITIC e.g., zero-field splitting and charge distribution, were calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) modelling. In addition, the energetic model describing the photophysical processes in the donor-acceptor blend was derived. Spin-sensitive photoluminescence measurements prove the formation of charge transfer (CT) states in the blend and the formation of TEs in the pure materials and the blend. However, no molecular TE signal is observed in the completed devices under working conditions by spin-sensitive electrical measurements. The absence of a molecular triplet state population allows to eliminate a charge carrier loss channel and irreversible photooxidation facilitated by long-lived triplet states. These results correlate well with the high power conversion efficiency of the PBDB-T:ITIC-based OSCs and their high stability.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with atomically precise width and edge structures are a promising class of nanomaterials for optoelectronics, thanks to their semiconducting nature and high mobility of charge carriers. Understanding the fundamental static optical properties and ultrafast dynamics of charge carrier generation in GNRs is essential for optoelectronic applications. Combining THz spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we report a strong exciton effect with binding energy up to 700 meV in liquid-phase-dispersed GNRs with a width of 1.7 nm and an optical bandgap of 1.6 eV, illustrating the intrinsically strong Coulomb interactions between photogenerated electrons and holes. By tracking the exciton dynamics, we reveal an ultrafast formation of excitons in GNRs with a long lifetime over 100 ps. Amorphous organic semiconductors based on small molecules and polymers are used in many applications, most prominently organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic solar cells. Impurities and charge traps are omnipresent in most currently available organic semiconductors and limit charge transport and thus device efficiency. The microscopic cause as well as the chemical nature of these traps are presently not well understood. Using a multiscale model we characterize the influence of impurities on the density of states and charge transport in small-molecule amorphous organic semiconductors. We use the model to quantitatively describe the influence of water molecules and water-oxygen complexes on the electron and hole mobilities. These species are seen to impact the shape of the density of states and to act as explicit charge traps within the energy gap. By means of non-resonant Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we measure and assign the vibrational spectrum of two distinct two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite derivatives. These two samples are selected in order to probe the effects of the organic cation on lattice dynamics. One templating cation is composed of a phenyl-substituted ammonium derivative, while the other contains a linear alkyl group. We find that modes that directly involve the organic cation are more prevalent in the phenyl-substituted derivative. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the Raman spectra reveals differences in the nature of dynamic disorder, with a strong dependence on the molecular nature of the organic moiety.

Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors feature complex lattice dynamics due to the ionic character of the crystal and the softness arising from non-covalent bonds between molecular moieties and the inorganic network. Here we establish that such dynamic structural complexity in a prototypical two-dimensional lead iodide perovskite gives rise to the coexistence of diverse excitonic resonances, each with a distinct degree of polaronic character. By means of high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, we identify vibrational wavepacket dynamics that evolve along different configurational coordinates for distinct excitons and photocarriers. Employing density functional theory calculations, we assign the observed coherent vibrational modes to various low-frequency ($\lesssim 50$\,cm$^{-1}$) optical phonons involving motion in the lead-iodide layers. We thus conclude that different excitons induce specific lattice reorganizations, which are signatures of polaronic binding. We present a novel hybrid quantum/classical (QM/MM) approach to the calculation of charged excitations in molecular solids based on the many-body Green's function $GW$ formalism. Molecules described at the $GW$ level are embedded into the crystalline environment modeled with an accurate classical polarizable scheme. This allows the calculation of electron addition and removal energies in the bulk and at crystal surfaces where charged excitations are probed in photoelectron experiments. By considering the paradigmatic case of pentacene and perfluoropentacene crystals, we discuss the different contributions from intermolecular interactions to electronic energy levels, distinguishing between polarization, which is accounted for combining quantum and classical polarizabilities, and crystal field effects, that can impact energy levels by up to $\pm0.6$ eV. After introducing band dispersion, we achieve quantitative agreement (within 0.2 eV) on the ionization potential and electron affinity measured at pentacene and perfluoropentacene crystal surfaces characterized by standing molecules.

The electronic and optical properties of the paradigmatic F4TCNQ-doped pentacene in the low-doping limit are investigated by a combination of state-of-the-art many-body \emph{ab initio} methods accounting for environmental screening effects, and a carefully parametrized model Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that while the acceptor level lies very deep in the gap, the inclusion of electron-hole interactions strongly stabilizes dopant-semiconductor charge transfer states and, together with spin statistics and structural relaxation effects, rationalize the possibility for room-temperature dopant ionization. The mechanisms underlying coherent and thermally activated singlet exciton fission in pi-stacked acene crystals are clarified based on quantum dynamics simulations parameterized against a highly correlated description of the electronic excitations and their couplings to intramolecular and intermolecular vibrations. In TIPS-pentacene crystals, the relative longitudinal shift of the molecular backbones yields large electronic couplings of the triplet exciton pair with both the singlet exciton and charge transfer (CT) states. CT-mediated superexchange and direct pathways are found to contribute synergetically to the ultrafast (100fs) singlet fission process driven by vibronic coherences. By contrast, the electronic couplings for singlet fission strictly vanish at the equilibrium pi-stacking of rubrene that exhibits C2h symmetry. In this case, the process is incoherent and driven by excitations of symmetry-breaking intermolecular vibrations, rationalizing the experimentally observed temperature dependence.
