Ovine and dromedary Echinococcus granulosus isolates from Tunisia were identified as G1 and G6 strains based on polymorphism of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxydase CO1. Single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) was used in order to examine the genetic variation within and between Tunisian G1 and G6 strains and to estimate the extent of selfing. The dromedary isolates are genetically distinct from sheep isolates (high value of genetic variation between populations: Fst = 0.46). No significant deficiency in heterozygotes was found in sheep isolates, whereas heterozygote deficiency (suggesting selfing) was found in a limited number of camel isolates.

Mesenteric cysts are documented as a rare entity in pediatric population. They are considered as benign intra-abdominal tumors with an unknown etiology. Symptoms are not specific and knowledge of such condition is essential in order to establish a proper management. We report three pediatrics cases of mesenteric cysts managed between 2000 and 2009 in the pediatric surgery Department of Monastir College Hospital. We described the clinical, radiological and operative findings. Two males and a female were managed (age range: 10 days-5years, mean age: 6,3years). Two patients were presented with an intestinal obstruction. A preoperative diagnosis was made basing on imaging. Thus, abdominal ultrasonography was performed in all of our reported cases and showed a cystic mass in all cases. The cystic nature of the mass, its margins and its extension were better described on tomographic images. The mesenteric cyst was completely and successfully removed in all cases. The histopathological report confirmed the diagnosis and showed a multiloculated cyst with columnar mesothelial lining, without any defined muscular layer or cellular atypia and without any evidence of malignancy. The children were evaluated post-operatively with a mean follow-up of 2 years and a half. No recurrence was noted in our patients during the follow-up period. It is known that clinical features are not specific of such anomaly but once the diagnosis is made, the complete surgical removal of the cyst remains the treatment of choice with excellent outcomes.

Heterotopic pancreas (HP) is a rare congenital developmental anomaly of the gastro-intestinal tract, defined as the presence of pancreatic tissue found in ectopic sites. Intussusception caused by isolated HP is extremely rare. Pediatric reports concerning this pathology are case reports. Here, we report cases of secondary intussusception, in which conservative treatment failed and surgery was performed. The aim of this review is to study the epidemiologic and clinical aspects of HP in pediatric patients from our institution. We retrospectively collected patients who were treated in the pediatric surgery department for intussusception caused by HP, from January 1986 to November 2018. We investigated five patients, three boys and two girls, aged 5 months to 2 years. The diagnosis was made incidentally during the operation. HP was found in the jejunum in three cases and in the ileum in two cases. HP was removed. The postoperative course was uneventful. Ureterocele is a pseudo-cyst dilation of the terminal submucosal ureter. It is a rare malformative uropathy, in particular associated with simplex ureter. We conducted a retrospective study over a period of 10 years. Twelve medical records of patients whose data were collected at the Department of Paediatric Surgery of Monastir between 2006 and 2016 were examined. The average age of patients was 2.7 years (ranging from 7 days to 11 years) with a sex ratio of 1. Patients´ clinical status was dominated by fever due to upper urinary tract infection. Diagnosis was mainly based on renal bladder ultrasound, intravenous urography (IVU) and retrograde urethrography and cystography. Ureterocele was unilateral in 10 cases and bilateral in 2 cases (on a total of 14 cases). It was associated with simplex ureter in all cases and all patients underwent endoscopic surgery. No perioperative adverse event was reported. The postoperative course was uneventful. Clinical and radiological improvements were reported in all cases. Ureterocele associated with simplex ureter is a very rare urinary abnormality. Early diagnosis is essential to avoid upper urinary tract involvement. Peritoneal hydatid cysts are rare in children even in endemic areas. The primary or secondary origin of this site remains controversial, especially in children. Secondary peritoneal hydatid cysts are mainly the result of spontaneous or traumatic rupture of concomitant liver cysts or the leakage of cystic content during surgery. The purpose of our study is to present the largest case series of peritoneal hydatidosis in children. In addition, we aimed to assess the clinical and paraclinical findings as well as the management of echinococcosis at this location in children. The present case series is a study of ten children with peritoneal hydatid cysts, who underwent surgical intervention between 2013 and 2018 in the Pediatric Surgery Department, University of Monastir (Monastir, Tunisia). The mean age of the children was six years. All children presented abdominal pain, and underwent ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen. Two patients had been operated on for lung hydatid cysts six months prior to the study. In two cases, radiologic investigations revealed the presence of an uncomplicated hepatic hydatid cyst located in segments II and IV. All patients underwent surgery, of which four underwent laparoscopy. Post-surgery, all patients received albendazole for three months, and the follow-up period was uneventful. Currently, all patients are in good health. Peritoneal hydatid disease is frequently secondary to the rupture of a primary hepatic cyst. Diagnosis is performed by abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography, and a positive serology result. Background: The definitive treatment of Hirschsprung's disease is the removal of the aganglionic bowel by a pull-through surgery. In most cases, this surgery is performed in infancy or in the neonatal period as presentation in older children and adulthood is uncommon., Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective study of 20 patients above two-year-old who underwent a transanal Soave one-stage endorectal pull-through procedure for Hirschsprung's disease between January 2002 and December 2010., Results: Twenty patients were recruited in this study. Fourteen were males and six were females. Patient ages ranged from 2 to 14 years (median age: five years and three months). All patients presented with persistent constipation and abdominal distension. Two of them had an intestinal obstruction that required colostomy. Ten patients (50%) had a recto-sigmoid Hirschsprung's disease. All patients were operated on using a Soave one-stage endorectal pull-through procedure. The laparoscopy was necessary during the pull-through in three cases. The average duration of the intervention was 240 minutes. That represents almost the double of the duration of the same procedure in newborns and infants in our department (130 minutes). Early postoperative complications included one case of anastomosis leakage and one case of intussusception. Late postoperative complications were perineum irritation in five cases (25%), anal stenosis in four cases (20%) and enterocolitis in one case (5%). None of our patients developed fecal incontinence. Soiling was reported in four cases (20%). There was no death., Conclusion: Soave transanal one-stage endorectal pull-through is safely feasible in children of more than two years of age. Laparoscopy may be necessary whenever there are difficulties in the pull-through.

Renal hydatid disease is rare in children. Open surgery is the traditional method of treatment, but minimally invasive techniques are being increasingly used. Herein, we report our experience with laparoscopic management of renal hydatid cyst in four children via a transperitoneal approach in three cases and a retroperitoneoscopy in one. We conclude that transperitoneal laparoscopy can be offered for the management of hydatid renal cyst associated with other intraperitoneal localizations, whereas the retroperitoneoscopy is limited for the treatment of isolated hydatid renal cysts., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Retrovesical hydatid cyst is rare, even in endemic regions. From a presentation of three cases, the authors will review the clinical findings and illustrate the imaging features of this pathology and relate diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties.

Cystic echinococcosis, which commonly starts during childhood or adolescence, is a serious problem of public health in Tunisia. For 121 children (161 cysts), the localization and fertility of cysts as well as viability of their protoscoleces were determined. Results indicated that the lung was the primary localization of cyst (59%) followed by the liver (35%). Children's infection is more frequent in male than in female (sex ratio 1.96) and the greatest number of cases is observed in the 4-9 year age groups (94 cases). The fertility of the cyst was independent of its site or its size and no incidence of age of children was detected. Nevertheless, the fertility rate is higher in females than in males for the liver localization.

Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of foetal fat tissue. To our knowledge, less than ten cases of omental lipoblastoma have been reported in the literature. We present a new case of omental lipoblastoma in a 3-month old girl. The role of CT in the diagnosis and surgery planning of this tumor will be discussed.
