Abstract Expansive soils pose significant challenges to road construction globally due to their tendency to expand and contract with changes in moisture content, leading to pavement failure. In the construction industry, finding an economical and cost-effective alternative to conventional road construction materials is crucial. The use of a natural cinder ash and hydrated lime mixture as reinforcement has proven to be effective in addressing this issue. Cinder ash, a readily available waste material in countries like Ethiopia, is adaptable and water-resistant, making it an ideal choice for reinforcing expansive soil. This article investigates the strength performance of a cinder ash and hydrated lime mixture as a reinforcement material for expansive soil. The study involves mixing 0%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35% of cinder ash with soil stabilized with 2–5% hydrated lime. Expansive soil samples are prepared according to the ASSHTO & ASTM method and tested for compressive strength, California bearing ratio, bulk density, and water absorption. The findings reveal a 448.62%, and 374% increase in compressive strength and California Bearing Ratio respectively for the specimen containing 5% hydrated lime and 35% cinder ash, cured for 28 days. The water absorption is minimized at 15.23% for the 5% hydrated lime and 35% cinder ash mixture; while the maximum density of the soil is observed at 1.774 kg/m3 for the optimal combination of 5% hydrated lime and 35% cinder ash mix. The study suggests that using 5% hydrated lime and 35% cinder ash content for the stabilization of expansive soil significantly enhances the strength characteristics of compressed stabilized soil.

Abstract This study aims at assessing business landscape and growth determinants of micro- and small enterprises working in WASH sector. The study also investigates the effect of determinant factors on enterprise growth. The study population comprised 6000 enterprises working in six cities. The study used varieties of data collection instruments including questionnaire administered with randomly selected enterprises and collected valid data from a total of 300 enterprises; conducted 24 Key informant interviews with different officials in the Cities who are concerned with WASH products and services including private WASH goods and service suppliers; conducted 12 FGDs with utility officers; community representatives; enterprise owners to triangulate the data come up with the questionnaire result. The WASH business landscape in Ethiopia faced several challenges that hinder its ability to create demand for WASH products and services among enterprises. These challenges include inadequate and ineffective demand creation efforts, low capacity of private commercial operators, limited financial services available to both the private sector and households, inadequate business support services at the local level, and inadequate workspace for WASH enterprises. However, there are also several drivers of WASH sector development in the city, such as increased government commitment to supporting access to WASH services through policies and budget support, support from development partners like the World Bank, and an increase in the city’s population. The structural equation modeling result revealed that finance resources, administrative skills, marketing competence, and technical support were found to be significant. However, infrastructure facility was found insignificant. The study recommended that the government and stakeholders come together to support enterprises and play their roles in the growth of enterprises in Ethiopia.

Abstract Flax (Linum usitatissimum) is a bast fiber plant known for its long fibers, making it an excellent source of pulp for paper production. In Ethiopia, flax is primarily cultivated for oil, with the residual straw utilized for papermaking. This study focuses on pulping flax straw using the Kraft process and investigates its chemical composition, proximate analysis, and morphological properties. The proximate analysis revealed an ash content of 4.13% and moisture content of 11%. Chemical composition analysis showed cellulose at 51.34%, hemicellulose at 25.20%, lignin at 14.12%, ash at 4.13%, and extractives at 5.21%. The morphological properties included a fiber length of 1.41 mm, diameter of 16.78 μm, lumen width of 9.45 μm, and cell wall thickness of 3.77 μm. Flax straw exhibited an acceptable Runkel ratio (0.8) and flexibility coefficient (56.32), placing it within the range of non-wood fibers. SEM analysis of the pulp’s morphology was conducted to assess fiber structure, including the presence of cracks. Pulp quality and length are directly linked to paper strength. Various pulping conditions were studied using a full-factorial design, with optimum conditions being 10% alkaline, 131.74°C, and 120 min of cooking time, yielding a pulp with a Kappa number of 10.45 and a yield of 40.56%. The resulting paper demonstrated standard tensile, tearing, and burst strengths, indicating that flax straw is a promising raw material for paper production.

Abstract Background Adolescence is commonly perceived as a distinct and typically healthy stage of life. However, in regions with a high prevalence of HIV, like Ethiopia, numerous adolescents are contracting the virus. Upon testing and diagnosis, they encounter care-related issues, particularly barriers and facilitators of the healthcare transition from adolescent to adult clinics. Hence, the study aimed to investigate the barriers and facilitators influencing the transition of adolescents living with HIV (ALWHs) in the resource-limited settings of Southern Ethiopia. Methods The research employed a phenomenological study design with a qualitative methodology. Purposive sampling was used to gather data through in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FDGs) involving ALWHs and their parents. The data analysis followed Van Manen’s principles. Results Following Van Manen’s guidelines, the data analysis revealed a conceptual framework with two major themes: “Barriers” and “Facilitators”. The theme barrier was derived from three sub-themes including behavioral barriers, social barriers, and system barriers in the transition. The theme facilitator was derived from four sub-themes including self-acceptance as an adult, a desire to experience new things, a supportive family, and friendly healthcare services. The study identified three levels of factors influencing the transition into adult clinics: individual, family/peer, and healthcare-related factors. The barriers to transition included lack of knowledge, being in a romantic relationship, psychosocial struggles, perceiving us as immature, stigma, negative peer pressure, lack of timely disclosure, absence of transition guidelines, disrespectful treatment, and absence of separate clinics. On the other hand, facilitators such as self-acceptance as an adult, desire for new experiences, family support, informed support and promising outcomes, flexible appointment scheduling, and psycho-social support groups were found to improve the transition process and enhance the overall well-being of adolescents living with HIV. Conclusion The study highlights the complex transition process for ALWHs into adult healthcare. Barriers such as lack of knowledge, stigma, and disrespectful treatment pose challenges during this critical period. Conversely, facilitators like self-acceptance, family support, and youth-friendly healthcare services can enhance the transition experience and well-being of ALWHs. Collaborative efforts among ALWHs, families, and healthcare providers are crucial for successful transitions and improved health outcomes. Separated clinics catering to the unique needs of ALWHs are recommended to address privacy concerns.

Abstract The poor quality of available feed resources is the major limiting factor for livestock production in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the chemical composition of major feed resources in three agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of the Gera District, southwest Ethiopia. Three representative samples of natural pasture (Cynodon dactylon, Pavonia schimperiana Hochst and Rhynchosia ferruginea), three indigenous fodder trees and shrubs (IFTSs) (Erythrina abyssinica, Vernonia amygdalina and Maytenus undat), two cultivated forages (Pennisetum purpureum and Pennisetum pedicellatum) and five crop residues (Hordeum vulgare (barley), Zea mays (maize), Sorghum bicolor (sorghum), Triticum aestivum (wheat) and Eragrostis tef (Teff)) were randomly and separately collected from the Highland (HL), midland (ML) and lowland (LL) AEZs. The samples were analyzed for ash, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ether extract (EE), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) content using standard analytical methods. Abstract Introduction Sleep is a crucial determinant of maternal and fetal health, significantly impacting the well-being of both the mother and her developing fetus. Poor sleep quality, characterized by difficulties in falling asleep or staying asleep, can cause poor pregnancy outcome. Conversely, studies came with inconsistent result in the prevalence of poor sleep quality in different trimester of pregnancy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to compare the prevalence of poor sleep quality in different trimesters. Method A systematic review and meta-analysis were done on published studies. Electronic data base search was done from PubMed, Hinari, Medline and Google Scholar. Data were extracted with Excel and the analysis were done using STATA version 17. Publication bias was assessed both graphically and statistically. I-square test was used to identify heterogeneity. Result In this meta-analysis, 38 studies that measured poor sleep quality using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI ≥ 5) were included. The pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality was identified as 37.46% (95% CI: 29.26, 45.67) in the first trimester, 47.62% (95% CI: 42.23, 53.02) in the second trimester, and 60.05% (95% CI: 51.32, 68.78) in the third trimester. Conclusion This study identified a significant discrepancy in the prevalence of poor sleep quality, which increases as gestational age advances. Therefore, this discrepancy should be addressed, and additional support should be provided to pregnant women to help them achieve adequate sleep, especially as gestational age advances.

Abstract Background The ability of an expert’s item difficulty ratings to predict test-taker actual performance is an important aspect of licensure examinations. Expert judgment is used as a primary source of information for users to make prior decisions to determine the pass rate of test takers. The nature of raters involved in predicting item difficulty is central to set credible standards. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and compare raters’ prediction and actual Multiple-Choice Questions’ difficulty of the undergraduate medicine licensure examination (UGMLE) in Ethiopia. Method 815 examinees’ responses to 200 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) were used in this study. The study also included experts’ item difficulty ratings of seven physicians who participated in the standard settings of UGMLE. Then, analysis was conducted to understand experts’ rating variation in predicting the actual difficulty levels of examinees. Descriptive statistics was used to profile the mean rater’s and actual difficulty value for MCQs, and ANOVA was used to compare the mean differences between raters’ prediction of item difficulty. Additionally, regression analysis was used to understand the interrater variations in item difficulty predictions compared to the actual difficulty. The proportion of variance of actual difficulty explained from rater prediction was computed using regression analysis. Results In this study, the mean difference between raters’ prediction and examinees’ actual performance was inconsistent across the exam domains. The study revealed a statistically significant strong positive correlation between the actual and predicted item difficulty in exam domains eight and eleven. However, a non-statistically significant very weak positive correlation was reported in exam domains seven and twelve. The multiple comparison analysis showed significant differences in mean item difficulty ratings between raters. In the regression analysis, experts’ item difficulty ratings of the UGMLE had 33% power in predicting the actual difficulty level. The regression model also showed a moderate positive correlation (R = 0.57) that was statistically significant at F (6, 193) = 15.58, P = 0.001. Conclusion This study demonstrated the complex process for assessing the difficulty level of MCQs in the UGMLE and emphasized the benefits of using experts’ ratings in advance. To ensure the exams maintain the necessary reliable and valid scores, raters’ accuracy on the UGMLE must be improved. To achieve this, techniques that align with the evolving assessment methodologies must be developed.

Abstract Bacterial vaginosis is a polymicrobial syndrome characterized by the decrease of Lactobacilli and an overgrowth of facultative and anaerobic bacteria in vaginal fluid. Though it has received little attention, it has been associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, such as pre-term labor and delivery, premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, and postpartum infections. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics from September 15 to December 14, 2021, at public hospitals in West Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 260 pregnant women, and systematic random sampling was employed to recruit the study participants. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and the vaginal swab was collected using a sterile cotton swab. The gram staining result was interpreted using the Nugent scoring system. Data was entered into an Excel spreadsheet and exported to STATA-14 for analysis. Data were presented using tables and graphs. Binary and multivariable logistic regressions were performed. Variables with a P value ≤ 0.25 at the binary logistic regression were entered into the multivariable logistic regression. Finally, variables with a P value ≤ 0.05 were considered predictors of bacterial vaginosis and interpreted using adjusted Odds Ratios (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 260 pregnant women attending antenatal care were included in the study. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis according to the Nugent scoring system was 22.3% (95% CI 17.4 to 27.9%). Pregnant women with other marital status were at reduced risk of bacterial vaginosis as compared with married pregnant women (AOR = 0.260, 95% CI 0.068 to 0.9995; P = 0.05). Rural residence (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.05 to 4.24; P = 0.036), use of one pant per week (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI 1.04 to 7.2; P = 0.041), and use of two or more pants per week (AOR = 4.96, 95% CI 1.49 to 16.57; P = 0.009) were significantly associated with bacterial vaginosis. In the current study, a high magnitude of bacterial vaginosis was reported. Residence, marital status, and number of pants used per week were found significantly associated among pregnant women. Hence, screening for the disease should be integrated into the recommended basic laboratory investigations during antenatal visits.

Abstract Streptococcus pneumoniae, a medically important opportunistic bacterial pathogen of the upper respiratory tract, is a major public health concern, causing a wide range of pneumococcal illnesses, both invasive and noninvasive. It is associated with significant global morbidity and mortality, including pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and acute otitis media. The major purpose of this study was to determine the molecular epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains that cause invasive and noninvasive infections in Ethiopia. A prospective study was undertaken in two regional hospitals between January 2018 and December 2019. Whole-genome sequencing was used to analyze all isolates. Serotypes and multilocus sequence types (MLST) were derived from genomic data. The E-test was used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Patient samples obtained 54 Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates, 33 from invasive and 21 from noninvasive specimens. Our findings identified 32 serotypes expressed by 25 Global Pneumococcal Sequence Clusters (GPSCs) and 42 sequence types (STs), including 21 new STs. The most common sequence types among the invasive isolates were ST3500, ST5368, ST11162, ST15425, ST15555, ST15559, and ST15561 (2/33, 6% each). These sequence types were linked to serotypes 8, 7 C, 15B/C, 16 F, 10 A, 15B, and 6 A, respectively. Among the noninvasive isolates, only ST15432, associated with serotype 23 A, had numerous isolates (4/21, 19%). Serotype 14 was revealed as the most resistant strain to penicillin G, whereas isolates from serotypes 3, 8, 7 C, and 10 A were resistant to erythromycin. Notably, all serotype 6 A isolates were resistant to both erythromycin and penicillin G. Our findings revealed an abnormally significant number of novel STs, as well as extremely diversified serotypes and sequence types, implying that Ethiopia may serve as a breeding ground for novel STs. Recombination can produce novel STs that cause capsular switching. This has the potential to influence how immunization campaigns affect the burden of invasive pneumococcal illness. The findings highlight the importance of continuous genetic surveillance of the pneumococcal population as a vital step toward enhancing future vaccine design.

Abstract Background Although a universal vaccine is available and Ethiopia is working outstandingly towards measles elimination, a recurrent measles outbreak has occurred each year in different parts of the country. Therefore, understanding the epidemiology of measles cases, the incidence of confirmed measles virus cases and related risk factors is crucial. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize information regarding the epidemiology, measles incidence rate and risk factors for national measles infections occurring in the past two decades, from 2000 to 2023. Methods Data from electronic databases, including PubMed, African Journal Online, WHO databases and Google Scholars, were searched to identify studies describing measles outbreaks, incidence rates and associated factors in Ethiopia that occurred between 2000 and 2023. Important basic information was extracted in an Excel spreadsheet and imported into Comprehensive Meta-analysis Software version 3 to evaluate the associations between measles outbreaks and different risk factors. We pooled the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for every included risk factor to evaluate the associations with measles outbreaks. Results We included 36 studies involving 132,502 patients with confirmed measles cases in Ethiopia. The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that measles outbreaks were more frequently reported in the Oromia region (73,310 (33.1%)), followed by the Southern Nation Nationalities of Ethiopia region (29,057 (13.4%)). The overall pooled analysis indicated that the prevalence of measles susceptibility was 67.5% (95% CI: 67.3–67.8%), with an I2 of 99.86% and a p value for heterogeneity

Abstract Rapid industrialization has significantly boosted economic growth but has also introduced severe environmental challenges, particularly in water pollution. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a nanocomposite composed of Rumex Abyssinicus Activated Carbon/Acid Activated Bentonite Clay/Graphene Oxide, and Iron Oxide (RAAC/AABC/GO/Fe3O4) for chromium removal from aqueous solutions. The preparation of the nanocomposite involved precise methods, and its characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and the point of zero charge (pHpzc). Batch adsorption experiments were designed using Design Expert software with a central composite design under response surface methodology. The factors investigated included pH (3, 6, and 9), initial Cr (VI) concentration (40, 70, and 100 mg/L), adsorbent dose (0.5, 0.75, 1 g/200 mL), and contact time (60, 90, and 120 min). Adsorption isotherms were analyzed using nonlinearized Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models, while pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were applied to adsorption kinetics. Characterization revealed a pHpzc of 8.25, a porous and heterogeneous surface (SEM), diverse functional groups (FTIR), an amorphous structure (XRD), and a significant surface area of 1201.23 m2/g (BET). The highest removal efficiency of 99.91% was achieved at pH 6, with an initial Cr (VI) concentration of 70 mg/L, a 90 min contact time, and an adsorbent dose of 1 g/200 mL. Optimization of the adsorption process identified optimal parameters as pH 5.84, initial Cr (VI) concentration of 88.94 mg/L, contact time of 60 min, and adsorbent dose of 0.52 g/200 mL. The Langmuir isotherm model, with an R2 value of 0.92836, best described the adsorption process, indicating a monolayer adsorption mechanism. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model provided the best fit with an R2 value of 0.988. Overall, the nanocomposite demonstrates significant potential as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for chromium removal from wastewater.

Abstract Background Rotavirus infections are a significant cause of severe diarrhea and related illness and death in children under five worldwide. Despite the global introduction of vaccinations for rotavirus over a decade ago, rotavirus infections still result in high deaths annually, mainly in low-income countries, including Ethiopia, and need special attention. This system review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively explore the positive proportion of rotavirus at pre- and post-vaccine introduction periods and genotype distribution in children under five with diarrhea in Ethiopia. Methods The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Database sources included PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Epistemonikos, focusing on studies published before November 30, 2023. The search targeted rotavirus infection and genotype distribution in Ethiopia before and after the introduction of the Rota vaccine. Data was managed using EndNote 2020 software and stored in an Excel 2010 sheet. A random-effects model determined the pooled estimate of the rotavirus infection rate at 95% confidence intervals. The Q-and I² statistics were used to assess the study heterogeneity, and a funnel plot (Egger test) was used to determine the possibility of publication bias. Results The analysis included data from nine studies conducted in different regions of Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of rotavirus infection was significant, with a prevalence rate of approximately 22.63% (1362/6039). The most common genotypes identified before the Rota vacation introduction were G1, G2, G3, G12, P [4], P [6], P [8], P [9], and P [10]. Meanwhile, G3 and P [8] genotypes were particularly prevalent after the Rota vaccine introduction. These findings highlight the importance of implementing preventive measures, such as vaccination, to reduce the burden of rotavirus infection in this population. The identified genotypes provide valuable insights for vaccine development and targeted interventions. Conclusion This study contributes to the evidence base for public health interventions and strategies to reduce the impact of rotavirus infection in children under five in Ethiopia. Despite the rollout of the Rota vaccination in Ethiopia, rotavirus heterogeneity is still high, and thus, enhancing vaccination and immunization is essential.

Abstract Background Digital technologies, such as wearable devices and smartphone applications (apps), can enable the decentralisation of clinical trials by measuring endpoints in people’s chosen locations rather than in traditional clinical settings. Digital endpoints can allow high-frequency and sensitive measurements of health outcomes compared to visit-based endpoints which provide an episodic snapshot of a person’s health. However, there are underexplored challenges in this emerging space that require interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration. A multi-stakeholder Knowledge Exchange event was organised to facilitate conversations across silos within this research ecosystem. Methods A survey was sent to an initial list of stakeholders to identify potential discussion topics. Additional stakeholders were identified through iterative discussions on perspectives that needed representation. Co-design meetings with attendees were held to discuss the scope, format and ethos of the event. The event itself featured a cross-disciplinary selection of talks, a panel discussion, small-group discussions facilitated via a rolling seating plan and audience participation via Slido. A transcript was generated from the day, which, together with the output from Slido, provided a record of the day’s discussions. Finally, meetings were held following the event to identify the key challenges for digital endpoints which emerged and reflections and recommendations for dissemination. Results Several challenges for digital endpoints were identified in the following areas: patient adherence and acceptability; algorithms and software for devices; design, analysis and conduct of clinical trials with digital endpoints; the environmental impact of digital endpoints; and the need for ongoing ethical support. Learnings taken for next generation events include the need to include additional stakeholder perspectives, such as those of funders and regulators, and the need for additional resources and facilitation to allow patient and public contributors to engage meaningfully during the event. Conclusions The event emphasised the importance of consortium building and highlighted the critical role that collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and cross-sector efforts play in driving innovation in research design and strategic partnership building moving forward. This necessitates enhanced recognition by funders to support multi-stakeholder projects with patient involvement, standardised terminology, and the utilisation of open-source software.

Abstract Background Patient satisfaction is a critical measure of the quality of healthcare services provided by healthcare facilities. However, very few studies, particularly in Ethiopia, which includes the study area, have specifically examined these discrepancies among people who use outpatient care. In this study, satisfaction levels and associated factors were compared between insured and uninsured patients receiving outpatient services at public health institutions in Hadiya Zone, southern Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based comparative cross-sectional study design was employed on 630 patients using multistage and systematic random sampling. Data were collected using a pretested and structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Results of the analysis were presented in text, tables, and graphs as appropriate. A survey was conducted in three selected kebeles of Kombolcha Regiopolitan City in South Wollo Zone. The selected kebeles were in proximity to brewery factory, Ethiopia. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect perception data from purposively selected three kebeles and a total of 57 randomly selected dairy farmers. Data collected were analyzed with a statistical package for social sciences (Version 20) and Microsoft Excel (2010). Smallholder dairy farmers had average herd size of 10.7 and 0.08 hectare total dairy farm per household. Average daily milk yield and lactation length of dairy cows was 10.8 liter/day and 9.5 months, respectively. The majority of farmers (59.6%) reared dairy cows with 50-75% exotic blood. The most smallholder dairy farmers satisfied their feed demand from the market and had a trend of providing both dense and poor quality affordable feed ingredients. Smallholder dairy farmers gave priority to feed different kind of cattle in the order of lactating cows, calve, pregnant, heifers and dry cows and used (100%) wet brewery spent grain as a source of dairy feed. Though, there was a brewery by-product supply deficit for half of year. The majority smallholder dairy farmers delivered brewery by-product directly from the brewery factories and followed by wholesalers and retailers. The majority of smallholder dairy farmers (96.4%) stated that the brewery spent grain was fed and stored freshly using different conservation techniques, and the remaining stored in ensiled (1.8%) and dried (1.8%) forms. Smallholder dairy farmers had no brewery spent grain ensiling practice and feeding brewery yeast to dairy animals. Smallholder dairy farmers indicated that high price due to abnormal market chain and shortage of brewery spent grain supply were the major challenges to sustain dairy industry in the study area, and the majority (40.6%) claimed to get swift solutions at high cost and less accessible brewery by-product.

Abstract Hot pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops produced in Ethiopia. However, production and productivity of the crop is far below the world average, which is mostly associated with soil fertility depletions as a result of inappropriate application of fertilizer. Therefore, this field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of organic eco-green and inorganic nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and green pod yield of hot pepper during the growing season of 2019/2020. Malware has become one of the biggest risks to security due to its rapid expansion. Therefore, it must be quickly detected and removed. While convolutional neural network (CNN) models have expanded to include ensemble and transfer learning approach from previous individual CNN architectures, relatively few studies have compared how well these approaches perform when it comes to malware family detection. A small number of malware varieties have been the focus of several research efforts’ studies. In this study, both of these issues were resolved. We present our own ensemble model for the classification of malware diseases into 34 types. We merge the Microsoft malware dataset with the Malimg dataset to increase the number of malware families identified by the model. To reduce training time and resource consumption, the suggested model utilized the most significant malware features, which are chosen based on the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator method, for the purpose of classifying the malware classes. The experimental findings demonstrate that the ensemble model’s accuracy is 99.78%. Based on the experimental results, we conclude that the model will help with real-world malware classification tasks.

Livestock production plays a significant role in improving the livelihoods of poor smallholder farmer households in the Majang zone. However, despite its importance, there is limited information on husbandry practices and constraints on livestock production to design and implement effective interventions to maximize productivity. The aim of this study was to assess husbandry practices and major constraints on livestock production in the Majang zone, southwest Ethiopia. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from a randomly selected sample of 168 households (HHs) through a face-to-face interview from January to May 2021. The results revealed that mixed crop-livestock farming is the dominant livestock production system in the study area. The overall average herd size per household (HH) was 2.15 ± 0.11 cattle, 0.15 ± 0.01 sheep, 0.31 ± 0.09 goats, 0.10 ± 0.02 donkey, 0.04 ± 0.00 mule, 0.13 ± 0.02 horses and 0.24 ± 0.02 chickens. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence and students' academic achievement. To this end, a quantitative research approach with a correlational design was employed. Participants were randomly selected using a stratified sampling technique, resulting in a sample of 135 second- and third-year undergraduate psychology students. An emotional intelligence scale was administered to these participants, and the collected data were subsequently analyzed using both descriptive statistics (including mean, frequency, and percentage) and inferential statistics (including independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple regression analysis, and mediation analysis). The findings indicated that students' perceived emotional intelligence levels were above average. Group comparison analyses revealed that, among various socio-demographic variables, only sex showed a significant difference in emotional intelligence. Similarly, the analysis showed that only the parents’ level of education significantly impacted students’ academic performance. Furthermore, a statistically significant positive relationship was found between emotional intelligence and academic achievement. Additionally, linear multiple regression analysis revealed that emotional intelligence significantly contributed to academic performance. Mediation analysis further revealed that the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement is partially mediated by sex. Finally, the study concludes with recommendations aimed at enhancing the academic achievement of students.

This study aimed to investigate factors affecting teachers’ practice of inclusive instructional strategies in teaching students with visual impairments (SVI) in regular schools of Addis Ababa. The study employed a quantitative methodology, with cross-sectional survey design. Data was gathered, using a survey questionnaire, from 421 teachers from 19 primary and 15 secondary schools. A hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the influence of knowledge, self-efficacy & attitudes on the practice of inclusive instruction strategies in teaching SVI in regular schools. The outcomes indicated that teachers had the required knowledge about inclusive instruction strategies. Conversely, a moderate level of teachers’ self-efficacy (M=3.00, SD=1.01) in teaching SVI and favorable attitudes towards inclusion of SVI (M=3.92, SD=0.64) were found in this study. Similarly, this study demonstrated a moderate level of teachers’ practice of inclusive instruction strategies in teaching SVI (M=2.69 out of 4, SD=0.83). Teachers’ self-efficacy and attitude were found to be significant predictors of practice, while knowledge was not a significant predictor. Self-efficacy accounted for 25.5% of the variance in practice, which was the most significant predictor of practice. All the independent variables together explained 31.4% of the variance in practice. Conclusion and possible implications for practice were indicated.

Ethiopia is currently emphasizing the construction of micro dams to enhance agricultural productivity and assure food security. The Upper Guder Dam, situated in the West Shoa Zone, Central Ethiopia, is one such project. However, the dam faces challenges due to complex geological and structural conditions, including leakage and slope instability. Hence, this study focuses on addressing the abutment slope stability and watertightness condition of this dam. Accordingly, the study employed discontinuity surveying, Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT), Rock Quality Designation (RQD), and Lugeon testing to assess the water tightness. Additionally, kinematic analysis and the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) were used to evaluate abutment slope stability. Results from surface geological mapping and core drilling showed that the dam site is constituted by quaternary soil, tuff, and basalt. The Lugeon test results indicate that the left abutment of the dam is susceptible to leakage down to a depth of 40 m, which suggests that the permeable zone extends deeper than the results revealed by the SRT. Furthermore, this test demonstrated that the dam's right and central foundations are susceptible to leakage to the drilled depths. The SRT revealed that the central foundation, right, and left abutments of the dam are susceptible to leakage to the depth of 35 m, 30 m, and 34 m, respectively. Moreover, the kinematic analysis revealed that a section of the left abutment of the dam is susceptible to wedge mode of failure due to the intersection of JS1 and JS2. The LEM modeling of the right abutment of the dam also depicted that this section of the dam is unstable under saturated conditions which illustrates the importance of precipitation as the major slope destabilizing factor in the study area. Based on the study findings, this study recommended the use of curtain grouting to address the water tightness issue and slope angle reduction to mitigate the slope instability problem.

Globally, rangeland degradation is a serious environmental problem, especially in pastoral and semi-pastoral areas that are constantly shrinking. Ethiopian pastoralists are highly affected like other parts of Africa due to climate change and other associated environmental problems. Hence, rangeland degradation is considered as a major obstacle to the pastoralist economy in Ethiopia. This review analyzes rangeland degradation, its causes, effects, and management practices in Ethiopia. This review paper has collected data mostly from published and unpublished documents and analyzed its connection with the contemporary Ethiopian context. The main causes of rangeland degradation are climate change, overgrazing, bush encroachment, population pressure, drought, government policies, encroachment on rain-fed agriculture, and the demise of traditional resource management institutions. Rangeland degradation causes significant losses in biodiversity, water potential, soil condition, animal performance, domestic animal husbandry, and community poverty. Despite these implications, the adoption of alternative recovery strategies in the country is woefully inadequate and needs much attention in turning policies and proclamations into practical ones. Ethiopia's Rangeland is economically, socially, and politically marginalized, and the region urgently needs a significant increase in investment and strengthened political support for sustainable land management to address the rangeland degradation issues.

Abstract Background Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most common public health problems throughout the world. It is a major cause of occupational injury, illness, and disability that leads to an increased rate of sick leave, financial costs for both individuals and society and the health care system. Weavers are among the populations exposed to musculoskeletal disorders due to a lack of occupational safety, health services, and poor working conditions. Yet, little is known about WMSD among weavers in Africa particularly in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among weavers. Method A multi-centered institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia among 424 weavers with a response rate of 97.7%. Participants were recruited randomly after proportional allocation was done for each institution and face-to-face interviews were employed to collect data using a well-structured questionnaire adopted from the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire and different literature. Abstract Background HIV/AIDS is one of the top global public health threats that causes significant cases, deaths, and socioeconomic impact. Even though both HIV testing and counseling are identified as essential HIV interventions during pregnancy, large population-representative data shows that service coverage and determinants are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the coverage and determinants of HIV testing and counseling services among pregnant mothers attending antenatal care services in sub-Saharan African countries using different nationwide data. Methods This study was conducted on large national-representative data from the Demographic Health Survey (DHS) using multilevel analysis. Data extraction, cleaning, coding, and statistical analysis were performed using STATA version 17. Weighting was used to ensure the representativeness of the sample and to obtain reliable estimates and standard errors. The multivariable multilevel logistic regression model was used to identify the determinants of HIV testing and counseling during the antenatal care visit. Adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to measure statistical significance. Results A total of 83,584 women attending antenatal care were included in this study. HIV testing and counseling coverage in sub-Saharan Africa was found to be 62.87% with a 95% CI of 62.54–63.19%. The HIV testing and counseling determinants included being in the age group of 35–49 (AOR = 1.64; 95% CI: 1.46–1.83), secondary and above education levels (AOR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.39–1.60), having at least four ANC visits (AOR = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.68–2.02), living in an urban area (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.30–1.52), and living in countries such as Rwanda (AOR = 6.19; 95% CI: 5.19–7.38) and Mauritania (AOR = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.01–0.03). Conclusion This study revealed that HIV testing and counseling coverage was 62.87% in sub-Saharan Africa. Factors affecting the HIV testing and counseling coverage were age, education, frequency of antenatal care visits, residence area, and living in Rwanda and Mauritania. Therefore, to increase HIV testing and counseling coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, policymakers on maternal health and other stakeholders should work with an integrated approach with other sectors and give prior attention to modifiable factors such as promoting women’s education and the comprehensiveness of antenatal care follow-up services during the follow-up.

Abstract Working capital management is an important financial management decision for the profitability of commercial banks. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of working capital management on commercial banks' profitability. The study used secondary data from audited financial statements of five private commercial banks in Ethiopia covering the period from 2011 to 2020. The banks were selected on a convenience basis. The financial information from the banks was analyzed to determine the impact of the current ratio, bank size, a current asset-to-total asset ratio, loans and advances to total asset ratio, and current liabilities-to-total assets ratios on profitability. The researchers applied descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The data were analyzed using the Stata data processing package. An econometric model is applied to examine the impact of working capital management on the profitability of commercial banks. A random effect model was employed and the result revealed that bank size and loans and advances to total assets were found to have a significant impact on banks' profitability. The current ratio, a current asset-to-total asset ratio, and current liabilities-to-total assets ratios were found insignificant to influence banks' profitability. Since the profitability of the banks depends on working capital management, rigorous attention should be given to those factors that influence the profitability of commercial banks.

Abstract Background Millions of working equids provide socio-economic support for many low-income communities worldwide. With the prevalence of harness-related wounds reported as higher than 60%, this study aims to describe the equipment used by working equids in three locations of the Ethiopian national regional state of Oromia (Fiche, Bishoftu and Shashamene), and the attitudes and practices of equid owners, users and harness makers regarding work equipment. This mixed-methods study consists of cross-sectional surveying of working equids used for taxi or transport of goods or water, as well as cart-driver questionnaires and focus groups (FG) with working equid stakeholders. Activities conducted with FG included participatory ranking of equipment attributes and equipment drawing exercises. Indicators of equipment design and assembly, as well as cart-driver attitudes and practices were described quantitatively. Associations between equipment characteristics and species, work-type and cart-driver indicators were investigated through univariable logistic regression models, whereas focus group discussions were transcribed and analysed thematically. Results In total, 368 working equid surveys and cart-driver questionnaires were completed and 87 participants took part in nine FG. Equipment composition and characteristics differed considerably from ideal animal draught and harnessing principles described in the literature, with none of the observed harnesses adhering to all principles and thus not considered fully adequate. Abstract Background Effective therapy for many infections is becoming difficult due to the evolutionary development of drug resistance, and hence, the development of alternative treatment options mainly from herbs is crucial. The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of ethanol extracts of stem bark, leaves and roots of Combretum molle against Streptococcus equi isolated from clinical cases of strangles using in vitro tests. Methods Plant extraction was performed using a maceration technique with 80% ethanol. The mean zone of inhibition was determined using the agar well diffusion method. Six serial dilutions with different concentrations (10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625% and 0.3125%) of each plant extract were prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). A modified agar microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) of the extracts. Results The results revealed that all plant extracts showed significant antibacterial activity. The root extract showed the best antibacterial effect compared to the others at all concentrations, with MZI values of 27.5, 23.225, 20.5, 17.9, 15.65 and 12.25 for the respective concentrations mentioned above and an MIC of 250 µg/ml. It was followed by the stem bark extract, which had MZI values of 24.67, 22.35, 18.225, 16.175, 11.125 and 8.2 millimeters and an MIC of 375 µg/ml. The leaf extract also had significant activity, with MZI values of 20.175, 18.25, 15.7, 13.125, 9.4 and 6.75 in millimeters and an MIC of 500 µg/ml. There was a direct relationship between the concentrations of the plant extracts and the level of inhibition. Conclusion The test plant extracts were compared with the conventional antibiotic penicillin G, and the results indicated that the parts of the test plant have significant antibacterial activity, which may support traditional claims and could be candidates for alternative drug discoveries.

Dandruff is a common fungal infection caused by the fungus Malassezia furfur. It is a big issue of concern in the human skin health system, as it is characterized by chronic non-inflammatory scalp conditions. These conditions include excessive scaling, itching, and redness. The fungus Malassezia is responsible for causing dandruff. Hence, this research dataset contains data related to the extraction and formulation of shampoo that cures dandruff by using extracts from the herbal leaves of Aloe Vera, Ocimum Sanctum, and Withania Somnifera herbs as an advancement of Ethiopian local herbs via formulation. The presented data provides an information on the optimal formulation process of herbal-based antidandruff shampoo against ketoconazole (KTC) as a control of the experiment. Ethanol-extracted oil from Aloe Vera, Ocimum Sanctum, and Withania Somnifera leaves was used to create three different formulation codes of F1, F2, and F3. The formulated antidandruff shampoo was evaluated in terms of its solid content, foamability, viscosity, dirt dispersion, pH, wetting time, and organoleptic properties. Moreover, the dataset includes information on the antifungal activity of the antidandruff shampoo against Malassezia furfur, as determined by disc diffusion and colony count testing method. The active chemical components responsible for the antidandruff activity of the leaf-extracted oil were also measured using FTIR.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) belongs to the composite family with various uses, from the stem to the seeds. In vitro flowering and embryo rescue are common techniques for improving safflower hybrid fertility by overcoming breeding constraints. However, anther culture expedites the production of superior types. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of plant hormones and genotypes on anther culture responses and to develop a suitable protocol. In both safflower genotypes, callus, shoot, and root formation were investigated using ten factorial hormone treatments. To promote callus induction and shoot regeneration, variable doses of Thidiazuron (TDZ) at 1 mg/l indole butyric acid (IBA) and variable benzylaminopurine (BAP) at 0.5 mg/l NAA were added to the MS medium, respectively. ½ MS media with varying IBA concentrations at a fixed 0.5 mg/l NAA were used for root regeneration. Results showed that Turkan was superior in all aspects of callus induction, and the highest degree of callus formation (46 %) was observed at 0.5 mg/l TDZ. On the other hand, the local safflower performed better for shoot and root regeneration. The highest shoot regeneration capacity (20 %) was shown at 2.0 mg/l BAP, while shoot rooting was reached (21 %) at 1.0 mg/l IBA of culture media. Despite successful in vitro regeneration, acclimated plantlets did not survive in the glasshouse. In this study, we demonstrated the higher capability for both shoot and root regeneration of calli produced from local safflower anthers. More effort is required to improve shoot and root development for both genotypes.

Ethiopia faces challenges in bringing diverse ethnic, cultural, and sociopolitical groups together to maintain its national unity. Thus, the study aims to identify major challenges in Ethiopia’s national unity from post-1991 to post-2018 and analyze if it is experiencing continuous attrition in post-2018.To do so, the research performed a qualitative inquiry that included both primary and secondary data. The study identifies ethnic federalism, ethnic politicization, the federal state design, and unresolved historical legacies as significant obstacles to Ethiopia’s national unity in the post-1991. It also highlights security dilemmas, impracticable hopes and real threats in the new administration, transition from democratic centralism to a unitary decentralized state is posing a threat to the country’s national unity in the post-2018. Furthermore, the study argued that post-1991 controversies over the country’s history, flag, national anthem, and constitution, as well as the existence of collapse state scenarios in the post-2018, can be evidence of the ongoing attrition of Ethiopia’s national unity. The study concludes that neither the post-1991 Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front nor the post-2018 ‘reformist administration’ effectively maintained Ethiopia’s national unity. Therefore, the Ethiopian government and citizens must work together to achieve national unity, as the country is deeply divided. A new social contract, established based on the will of the majority via genuine national dialogue, is needed for a more inclusive center and genuine self-rule in the country. This paves the way to avoid the vertical and horizontal trust deficit and helps to maintain the country’s national unity.

Agroecological conditions are crucial for food production and the foundation for food security in Ethiopian subsistence farming. This study examines the food security status and determinants in Hamassa watershed agroecological zones (AEZs). The study collected primary and secondary data from 328 randomly selected household heads and used various analytical tools including the Food Balance Model, t-test, chi-square test, Foster–Greer–Thorbecke Index and binary logit model. The result showed that 54.27% of households were food insecure, with the midland having the highest food insecurity at 68%, followed by lowland and highland at about 57% and 40%, respectively. About 27.7% of households had energy deficiency, and 15.5% were classified as severely food insecure (severity level). Specifically, the midland agroecology showed the highest food insecurity depth and severity due to small land size and population pressure. Results showed that water availability, climate change perception, land size, development agent, sex, education, Tropical livestock units and oxen were positive and significant factors in food security. On the other hand, age, household size, income from crop sales, total land size and social capital negatively and significantly affected food security. The food insecurity status and severity are different for different agroecologies, requiring tailored technical, institutional and policy interventions.

A targeted supplementary feeding program is an approach recommended to address moderate acute malnutrition in food-insecure settings. However, variation in agro-ecological zones (AEZs) might affect the chemical composition of feeds. Biofortification of provitamin A in maize is an attractive and sustainable remedy to the problem of vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. The utilization of molecular markers represents a promising avenue to facilitate the development of provitamin A (PVA)-enriched maize varieties. We screened 752 diverse tropical yellow/orange maize lines using kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) makers to validate the use of KASP markers in PVA maize breeding. To this end, a total of 161 yellow/orange inbred lines, selected from among the 752 lines, were evaluated for their endosperm PVA and other carotenoid compounds levels in two separate trials composed of 63 and 98 inbred lines in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.001) were observed among the yellow maize inbred lines studied for all carotenoid profiles. An inbred line TZMI1017, introduced by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) showed the highest level of PVA (12.99 µg/g) and β-carotene (12.08 µg/g). The molecular screening showed 43 yellow maize inbred lines carrying at least three of the favorable alleles of the KASP markers. TZMI1017 inbred line also carried the favorable alleles of almost all markers. In addition, nine locally developed inbred lines had medium to high PVA concentrations varying from 5.11 µg/g to 10.76 µg/g and harbored the favorable alleles of all the KASP PVA markers. Association analysis between molecular markers and PVA content variation in the yellow/orange maize inbred lines did not reveal a significant, predictable correlation. Further investigation is warranted to elucidate the underlying genetic architecture of the PVA content in this germplasm. However, we recommend strategic utilization of the maize-inbred lines with higher PVA content to enhance the PVA profile of the breeding program’s germplasm.

IntroductionThe public health concern of tobacco smoking is more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries including Ethiopia. Various studies have investigated tobacco smoking in various parts of Ethiopia. However, the findings have been inconsistent and characterized by significant variability. Besides, there is no nationally representative data on the subject, which could deter the design of effective intervention strategies to reduce tobacco-related problems. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of tobacco smoking and associated factors among adults in Ethiopia.MethodsThe study was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols Guideline. A detailed search was conducted from international databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, CINAHL, African Journals Online, HINARI, Global Health, and Google Scholar. The extracted data was analyzed using STATA 14 software. A random-effects model was used to estimate the effect size. IntroductionMusculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of illness, disability, and poor quality of life. Lack of access to potable water in the backyard forces women to take water from off-plot sources every day, which may expose them to various health risks. However, there has been little investigation on the musculoskeletal disorders’ health effects on water-carrying women.ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess musculoskeletal disorders symptoms and associated factors among water-carrying women in the Legambo district, Northeastern Ethiopia.Materials and methodsA community-based cross-sectional study was done with 618 water-carrying women chosen using simple random and systematic random sampling techniques. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews with the standard Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Data entry were carried out using Epi-data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25.0 for analysis. A binary logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with self-reported musculoskeletal disorder symptoms at a 95% confidence interval (CI). In the multivariate model, variables with a p-value ≤0.05 and a 95% CI were declared as factors of self-reported musculoskeletal disorder symptoms. The model’s fitness was assessed using Hosmer and Lemeshow, and it was found to be fit.ResultsThe prevalence of self-reported MSD symptoms was 72.5% during the previous 12 months. MSD symptoms were significantly elevated among women who carried water from a distance of 501–1,000 m [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 5.39, 95% CI = 3.64–9.69] and >1,000 m (5.93, 2.84–12.40), carried a water load of >15 kg during pregnancy (8.29, 2.97–23.09), and carried a water load of >15 kg when not pregnant (1.59, 1.44–2.68).ConclusionThree-fourths of the participants had self-reported musculoskeletal disorder symptoms in the past 12 months. Distance of water sources from their house, carrying the same amount of water during pregnancy, and weight of the water load carrying were factors associated with the self-reported musculoskeletal disorder symptoms. Hence, health professionals should raise awareness of the association between carrying high water loads and the development of MSDs, especially during pregnancy. Improvement in water supply infrastructure and enhancing behavioral intervention should be done. Furthermore, Future researchers should assess MSDs using objective measurements and cohort studies should be implemented.

Natural mineral water (termed hora in Afan Oromo) and surrounding soils are the most important source of mineral supplement traditionally used for livestock in many parts of Ethiopia. However, limited information exists on feeding practices and the impact of hora on animal performance. Thus, the present study aimed to assess farmers' feeding practices and perceptions about the role of hora and surrounding soils on animal performance. Data were collected from 385 households in four districts (Bedele, Dabo, Gechi and Boracha) through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire with the help of the KoboCollect application. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. The majority (72.3 %) of respondents reported hora as an important source of mineral supplement for livestock. About 78.1 % of respondents in Boracha routinely supplement their animals compared with farmers from other districts. Large ruminants were given first priority in supplementation with hora compared to other livestock. Interviewed farmers trekked their animals a distance of 6.5 ± 0.2 km to access hora twice a year during the dry season. The majority of the farmers (68.1 %) believed that hora supplementation improved animal performance, while 35.1 % noted negative impacts such as abortions, birth defects, delayed puberty, decreased conception rates and paralysis due to excessive consumption. This study underscores the perceived importance of hora as a natural source of mineral supplementation for livestock health and productivity. It emphasizes the need for improved management and conservation practices to ensure sustainable utilisation and mitigate negative impacts associated with excessive consumption. Moreover, to validate local farmers' perceptions regarding the importance of hora mineral water in animal nutrition and health, further research is needed to determine mineral composition of hora and livestock responses under controlled feeding trials.

Study region: Kobo-Golina River, Upper Danakil Basin, Ethiopia. Study focuses: It is crucial to understand the spatiotemporal distribution of blue water (BW) and green water (GW) for optimal use of water resources, especially in data-scarce regions. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which future climate is changing, and its impact on blue-green water resources in the study area. Projected changes were predicted based on the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Global Climate Models (GCMs) for three future periods (2015–2044, 2045–2075, 2076–2100) under two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP2–4.5 & SSP5–8.5). Compromise programming technique was employed to rank and select best performing GCMs. The multi-variable calibrated SWAT+ model was forced with climate projections from the top-ranked CMIP6 GCMs ensemble to simulate projected blue water (BW) and green water (GW) in the study area. New hydrological insights for the region: Compared to the baseline period (1984–2014), blue water declined while green water exhibited an increasing trend in all future periods under two SSPs. It is also noted that the spatial distribution of BW and GW remains uneven in the study area. Precipitation significantly impacted BW than GW resources. This study provides valuable insights into the utilization of the recent CMIP6 Global Climate Model coupled with multi-variable calibrated SWAT+ hydrological models for better simulation of Blue-Green water in data-scarce basins under changing climate.

Purifying water for diverse uses is vital, but concerns lie with the sustainability and accessibility of purification materials. As such, this study converted readily available water treatment plant sludge (WTPS) into activated adsorbent for phosphate removal in wastewater. WTPS was activated via thermal activation at 300 °C temperature and chemical activation processes of 3 M acid concentration, 4 h activation time, and 75 °C activation temperature, and then characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared, elemental analyzer, and differential scanning calorimetry. SEM and BET analyses revealed a highly porous adsorbent (279.2 m2/g) for efficient adsorption. On top of the activation process, preliminary experiments and numerical optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) were designed and conducted. Through optimizing conditions, it was found that 70 min of contact time, pH 3, 3 g/L adsorbent dose, and 30 mg/L initial phosphate concentration as optimal, yielding 83% removal efficiency. Furthermore, adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were examined and the second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models indicated best fit. Notably, the activated sludge could be regenerated for three cycles before efficiency dropped below 70%. Thus, activated WTPS presents a promising, sustainable, and readily available adsorbent for phosphate removal in wastewater treatment. Abstract Background Gender-based violence (GBV) particularly against women is unfortunately common during armed conflicts. No rigorous and comprehensive empirical work has documented the extent of GBV and its consequences that took place during the two years of devastating armed conflict in Northern Ethiopia. This study aims to assess GBV and its consequences in war-torn areas of northern Ethiopia. Methods We used a qualitative method augmented by quantitative method to enroll research participants. We conducted in-depth interviews to characterize the lived experiences of GBV survivors. All interviews were conducted confidentially. The data were collected to the point of data saturation. All interviews were transcribed verbatim into local language, translated into English, and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. We also used reports from healthcare facilities and conducted a descriptive analysis of the demographic characteristics of study participants. Results One thousand one hundred seventy-seven persons reported GBV to healthcare providers. The qualitative study identified several forms of violence (sexual, physical, and psychological). Gang rape against women including minors as young as 14 years old girls was reported. Additionally, the perpetrators sexually violated women who were pregnant, and elderly women as old as 65 years, who took refuge in religious institutions. The perpetrators committed direct assaults on the body with items (e.g., burning the body with cigarette fire) or weapons, holding women and girls as captives, and deprivation of sleep and food. GBV survivors reported stigma, prejudice, suicide attempts, nightmares, and hopelessness. GBV survivors dealt with the traumatic stress by outmigration (leaving their residences), seeking care at healthcare facilities, self-isolation, being silent, dropping out of school, and seeking counseling. Conclusion GBV survivors were subjected to multiple and compounding types of violence, with a wide range of adverse health consequences for survivors and their families. GBV survivors require multifaceted interventions including psychological, health, and economic support to rehabilitate them to lead a productive life.

Abstract Anthropogenic and climate-related phenomena are among the main factors responsible for variations in vegetation structure and composition worldwide. However, studies that integrate the effects of human activities and climate variability in fragile tropical ecosystems, including the semi-arid Tigray region, are lacking. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of climate variability and environmental policy changes on the spatial distribution and pattern of vegetation cover in the semi-arid Tigray region of Ethiopia over the past four decades. We used satellite-based vegetation index (normalized difference vegetation index) and monthly rainfall data to analyze the relationship between vegetation cover and climatic variability. Residual analysis was also used to further disentangle the effects of climatic variability and environmental policy on vegetation cover. The regression analysis (r2 = 0.19) showed an insignificant causal relationship between vegetation dynamics and precipitation over the 41-years study period. This study also highlighted negative impact of the global rise in temperature on vegetation cover due to water stress caused by evapotranspiration. It has been linked to an increased risk of a wide range of serious short- and long-term medical and mental health problems. Although it is a complex societal issue, it receives limited research attention in the area.Objective: To assess lifetime prevalence of childhood abuse and neglect among high school students in Debre Tabor town, south Gondar Zone, Northwest Ethiopia, 2022.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to assess 423 high school students, chosen through a systematic sampling technique. Data were collected using a pre-tested, structured and self-administered international child abuse screening tool, child version (ICAST-C). The effect of independent variables on the outcome variable was explored using logistic regression analyses. The level of significances were determined using an odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval.Results: Of the 423 study participants, 84.4% had lifetime experience of childhood abuse and neglect. Being female (AOR=4.5, 95% CI: 2.38, 8.60), parental marital status (AOR=5.4, 95% CI: 1.07, 27.3), illiteracy of father (AOR=1.65, 95% CI: 4.5, 6.03), birth order (AOR=4.5, 95% CI: 1.57, 13.0), open family discussion of sexual matters (AOR=0.37, 95% CI:1.74, 7.86), and watching pornography (AOR=0.08, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.40) were significantly associated with lifetime experience of childhood abuse and neglect.Conclusion: Lifetime experience of childhood abuse and neglect was high as compared with previous studies. Being female, parental marital status, illiterate fathers, watching pornography, and open family discussion of sexual matters were predictors of childhood abuse and neglect. Abstract Background The aim of this study is to investigate how climate change influences the distribution of economically and environmentally important species of P. abyssinica and H. citrispinum in Ethiopia. The species distribution modeling intends to forecast species' ecological niche ranges and habitat suitability by employing a variety of environmental parameters as predictors, which is vital for conservation planning and restoration success. Six representative concentration pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 for the years 2050 and 2070) with the same resolution of 2.5 min that shows the emission scenarios were used for the prediction. To predict the current and future distributions of H. citrispinum and P. abyssinica 56 and 45 occurrence records from National Herbarium, Addis Ababa University, GBIF, and available literatures were used respectively. Results The MaxEnt model predicted habitat suitability for H. citrispinum species with an Area Under Curve (AUC) value of 0.961 ± 0.027, and 0.809 ± 0.045 for P. abyssinica, indicating excellent discriminatory ability or accuracy under the current climate scenario. The Future distribution of suitable habitat for both H. citrispinum and P. abyssinica plant species was accurately predicted with AUC values of 0.960 ± 0.017 and 0.780 ± 0.35, respectively under future climatic scenarios. The jackknife test result indicates that environmental variables such as topographic position index (92.5%), precipitation of the driest quarter (3%) and precipitation in the coldest quarter (1.8%) are associated with the distributions of H. citrispinum, while topographic position index (36.6%), precipitation of driest quarter (21.4%), precipitation of warmest quarter (16.2%) and precipitation seasonality (13.9%) were found to be limiting environmental variables for P. abyssinica under current and future climatic conditions in Ethiopia. The prediction map and interception calculation for both present and projected (in the 2050s and again in the 2070s) climate change scenarios indicate significant habitat loss, decreased, and fragmentation under all RCPs (2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) scenarios for P. abyssinica while habitat gain, and increasing for H. citrispinum in Ethiopia. Conclusions Topographic position index (TPI) is the most impactful predictor variable on the distribution of the two species. Consequently, potentially habitable areas (with diverse aspects and slopes) are increasing for H. citrispinum while decreasing for P. abyssinica.

Recently hospital managers and designers become more interested in ‘patient centered design’ (PCD) through the integration of patients' perceptions and expectations of the hospitals' physical environment. This increased interest in PCD indicates the improved understanding of the impacts of hospital's physical environment on all users including patients, families and hospital staff. Literature shows that incorporating users' perceptions of the physical environment during the design process is very important to produce PCD. The current study is aimed at assessing the impacts of four demographic factors namely: age, sex, education level and area of residence on users' perceptions of hospitals' physical environment. Five principal design factors were identified: views, safety &comfort, facilities &way finding, architectural & hygiene and sensory. For the questionnaire survey, the statistical analysis has been conducted with IBM SPSS Statistics version 27.0. Demographic data was analyzed descriptively by computing frequencies and percentages. Then the descriptive statistics for the items i.e. frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations (SD) were computed. Non-parametric tests were applied to assess variances in constructed principal dimensions concerning users' demographic factors. The users of two hospitals: Nekemte specialized hospital & Paulos comprehensive hospital participated in the survey. A total of 480 respondents were participated in ranking the importance of 21 questionnaire items on 5-point Likert scale. The result reveals that education level has a significance role (p-value = 00.001,00.002,0.032) for the difference between perceptions of three out of five summated design factors namely; views, facilities & way finding and architectural& hygiene respectively. Similarly, residence area has significantly contributed for the difference in users' perceptions (P-value = 00.001, 00.001, 0.025) on three summated design factors; views, safety &comfort and architectural & hygiene respectively. Based on the analysis, the study suggests that identifying perceptions of all users is very important to help designers to design PCD based on empirical evidence.

Erythrina brucei has been applied as a green manure to improve soil fertility in southern Ethiopia. It has been nodulated by indigenous rhizobia. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of E. brucei inoculation with microbial consortia consisted of Bradyrhizobium shewense, Acinetobacter soli and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)on E. brucei growth, soil nitrogen and phosphorous status after application as a green manure.A field experiment was conducted by inoculating E. Brucei with different microbial consortia. E. brucei inoculated with the microbial consortia were grown for 150 days. Its shoot length was measured at 60, 90, 120 and 150 days after planting. BackgroundAdolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are expected to be healthy in life. However, the unique health challenges faced by AGYW include unsafe sex practices and substance abuse. Only 46.3% of AGYW in Africa are aware of their HIV status, and difficulties are underlined in HIV testing among adolescents and young people. To demarcate the areas with low and high HIV testing, this study aimed to map predictors of ever-tested for HIV among adolescent girls and young women in Ethiopia.MethodsSecondary data analysis was conducted using the dataset from the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EHDS). We conducted spatial autocorrelation and Moran's I statistics to investigate the regional variance of HIV being ever-tested in AGYW. In addition, spatial regression analyses such as ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR) were carried out to determine the predictors of being ever-tested for HIV among AGYW.ResultsAddis Ababa, some parts of Amhara, Dire Dawa, Gambela, and Tigray were the primary regions and city administrations for being ever-tested for HIV among AGYW. A lesser proportion of AGYW being ever-tested for HIV was found in Somalia, Afar, Benshangul Gumuz, and southern nations. Spatial regression analyses identified an age range of 15–19 years, being Muslim, having no formal education, having no knowledge about HIV, and experiencing severe stigma as predictors of being ever-tested for HIV among AGYW.ConclusionThe proportion of AGYW being ever-tested for HIV was high in Addis Ababa, some parts of Amhara, Dire Dawa, Gambela, and Tigray. Spatial regression analyses identified that AGYW aged 15–19 years, having no formal education, having no knowledge about HIV, and experiencing severe community stigma as predictors negatively affecting the proportion of being ever-tested for HIV, while being Muslim was a predictor that positively affected the proportion of being ever-tested for HIV. The governments and other stakeholders should focus on increasing HIV testing among these special groups of the population.

Background:. Perioperative data are essential to improve the safety of surgical care. However, surgical outcome research (SOR) from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is disproportionately sparse. We aimed to assess practices, barriers, facilitators, and perceptions influencing the collection and use of surgical outcome data (SOD) in LMICs. Methods:. An internet-based survey was developed and disseminated to stakeholders involved in the care of surgical patients in LMICs. The Performance of Routine Information Systems Management framework was used to explore the frequency and relative importance of organizational, technical, and behavioral barriers. Associations were determined using χ2 and ANOVA analyses. Results:. Final analysis included 229 surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and administrators from 36 separate LMICs. Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance is one of the common global public health problems. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is multifactorial, and tackling its development is challenging. Consequently, infections caused by resistant bacteria are unresponsive to conventional drugs, resulting in prolonged and severe illnesses, higher mortality rates, and considerable healthcare costs. Therefore, understanding the antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial pathogens is essential to optimize treatments and reduce the risks associated with infections. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacterial isolates from different clinical specimens at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). Materials and methods The retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on the bacterial culture and antibiotic susceptibility reports of different clinical specimens referred to the Bacteriology Laboratory of EPHI from September 2015 to August 2019. Standard bacteriological techniques were used for the isolation and identification of the bacteria. Data were extracted from 840 patients’ records, which included the type of clinical sample cultured, the name of the bacteria, the representations of the antibiotics used for susceptibility testing, and the susceptibility results. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the bacterial isolates and the antimicrobial resistance profiles. Results Eight types of clinical specimens were analyzed for bacterial isolates and urine specimens were the most analyzed. Ten different genera of bacteria were identified by culture. Almost all the isolates were gram-negative bacteria, while only one species of gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) was reported. Antibiotic sensitivity patterns were tested on 840 culture isolates. Escherichia coli strains revealed more than 57% resistance to seventeen antibiotics. Klebsiella pneumoniae showed nearly 70% or greater resistance rates for 17 of the antibiotics used. The overall detected multidrug resistance (MDR) was 64.29%. The highest MDR was reported in Acinetobacter strains (84%) followed by K. pneumoniae (80%). Conclusions The multidrug resistance rates found in this study were alarming. Strengthening antimicrobial resistance surveillance at the national level is mandatory, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing should be accessible at local diagnostic centers.
