2. Unveiling the Enhancement of Spontaneous Emission at Exceptional Points

Abstract

Exceptional points (EPs), singularities of non-Hermitian physics where complex spectral resonances degenerate, are one of the most exotic features of nonequilibrium open systems with unique properties. For instance, the emission rate of quantum emitters placed near resonators with EPs is enhanced (compared to the free-space emission rate) by a factor that scales quadratically with the resonance quality factor. Here, we verify the theory of spontaneous emission at EPs by measuring photoluminescence from photonic-crystal slabs that are embedded with a high-quantum-yield active material. While our experimental results verify the theoretically predicted enhancement, it also highlights the practical limitations on the enhancement due to material loss. Our designed structures can be used in applications that require enhanced and controlled emission, such as quantum sensing and imaging.

Abstract

Random lasing is an intriguing phenomenon occurring in disordered structures with optical gain. In such lasers, the scattering of light provides the necessary feedback for lasing action. Because of the light scattering, the random lasing systems emit in all the directions in contrast with the directional emission of the conventional lasers. While this property can be desired in some cases, the control of the emission directionality remains required for most of the applications. Besides, it is well known that the excitation of cavity exciton-polaritons is intrinsically directional. Each wavelength (energy) of the cavity polariton, which is a superposition of an excitonic state and a cavity mode, corresponds to a well-defined propagation direction. We demonstrate in this article that coupling the emission of a 2D random laser with a cavity polaritonic resonance permits to control the direction of emission of the random laser. This results in a directional random lasing whose emission angle with respect to the microcavity axis can be tuned in a large range of angles by varying the cavity detuning. Abstract

Hybrid halide perovskites are now considered as low-cost materials for contemporary research in photovoltaics and nanophotonics. In particular, because these materials can be solution processed, they represent a great hope for obtaining low-cost devices. While the potential of 2D layered hybrid perovskites for polaritonic devices operating at room temperature has been demonstrated in the past, the potential of the 3D perovskites has been much less explored for this particular application. Here, we report the strong exciton-photon coupling with 3D bromide hybrid perovskite. Cavity polaritons are experimentallly demonstrated from both reflectivity and photoluminescence experiments, at room temperature, in a 3$\lambda$/2 planar microcavity containing a large surface spin-coated $CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$ thin film. A microcavity quality factor of 92 was found and a large Rabi splitting of 70 meV was measured. This result paves the way to low-cost polaritonic devices operating at room temperature, potentially electrically injectable as 3D hybrid perovskites present good transport properties., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Features of thermal transport in multilayered porous silicon nanostructures are considered. Such nanostructures were fabricated by electrochemical etching of monocrystalline Si substrates by applying periodically changed current density. Hereby, the multilayered structures with specific phononic properties were formed. Photoacoustic (PA) technique in gas-microphone configuration was applied for thermal conductivity evaluation. Experimental amplitude-frequency dependencies were adjusted by temperature distribution simulation with thermal conductivity of the multilayered porous structure as a fitting parameter. The experimentally determined values of thermal conductivity were found to be significantly lower than theoretically calculated ones. Such difference was associated with the presence of thermal resistance at the interfaces between porous layers with different porosities arising because of elastic parameters mismatch (acoustical mismatch). Accordingly, the magnitude of this interfacial thermal resistance was experimentally evaluated for the first time. Furthermore, crucial impact of the resistance on thermal transport perturbation in a multilayered porous silicon structure was revealed.

This result paves the way for the developement of an active control of propagation directions for heat fluxes exchanged in near-field throughout integrated nanostructures networks.

Abstract

We report an approach to achieve this goal via build a plasmonic-dielectric photonic hybrid system. We induce a defect mode based photonic crystal (PC) cavity to work as a intermedium storage as well as a near-field light source to excite a plasmonic nanoantenna (NA). In this way, a plasmonic-photonic nano-laser source is created in present experiment. The coupling condition between the two elements is investigated in far-field and near-field level. We found that the NA reduces the Q-factor of the PC-cavity. Meanwhile, the NA concentrates and enhances the laser emission of the PC-cavity. This novel hybrid dielectric-plasmonic structure may open a new avenue in the generation of nano-light sources, which can be applied in areas such as optical information storage, non-linear optics, optical trapping and detection, integrated optics, etc., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report an approach of realization and characterization of a novel plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanodevice. The device comprises a plasmonic nano-antenna (NA) and a defect mode based PC cavity, and were fabricated based on a multi-step electron-beam lithography. The laser emission of the devices was demonstrated and the coupling conditions between the NA and PC cavity were investigated in near-field level.

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanolaser that combines the light harvesting features of a dielectric photonic crystal cavity with the extraordinary confining properties of an optical nano-antenna. In that purpose, we developed a novel fabrication method based on multi-step electron-beam lithography. We show that it enables the robust and reproducible production of hybrid structures, using fully top down approach to accurately position the antenna. Coherent coupling of the photonic and plasmonic modes is highlighted and opens up a broad range of new hybrid nanophotonic devices.

Abstract

It is known that the near-field spectrum of the local density of states of the electromagnetic field above a SiC/air interface displays an intense narrow peak due to the presence of a surface polariton. It has been recently shown that this surface wave can be strongly coupled with the sheet plasmon of graphene in graphene-SiC heterosystems. Here, we explore the interplay between these two phenomena and demonstrate that the spectrum of the electromagnetic local density of states in these systems presents two peaks whose position depends dramatically both on the distance to the interface and on the chemical potential of graphene. Abstract

In this paper the design, fabrication and characterization of a bioinspired overlayer deposited on a GaN LED is described. The purpose of this overlayer is to improve light extraction into air from the diode's high refractive-index active material. The layer design is inspired by the microstructure found in the firefly Photuris sp. The actual dimensions and material composition have been optimized to take into account the high refractive index of the GaN diode stack. This two-dimensional pattern contrasts other designs by its unusual profile, its larger dimensions and the fact that it can be tailored to an existing diode design rather than requiring a complete redesign of the diode geometry. Abstract

International audience; Many applications require colored surfaces while maximizing photons to pass through with no optical losses. As the perceived color depends on the spectral content and the number of reflected photons for each wavelength, it is necessary to consider not only the chromatic content but also the brightness. As a first application example, photovoltaic modules could see their acceptance in urban situations greatly improved if their color could be controlled while maximizing the number of photons used for energy conversion. In this case, it is important to limit light brightness to avoid glare when light coming from the sun is reflected directly. As another example, a colored and semi-transparent glass layer in the infrared could efficiently protect sensors while camouflaging them, such as lidar in automotive applications. We propose a theoretical study for multicolor applications, considering 2D partially etched grating waveguide structures that behave as a perfect broadband antireflection coating while the residual layer couples light in a waveguided mode in order to reflect only a particular photon band. This strategy allows to produce a large variety of colors and the use of non-absorbing materials avoids any optical loss. The width of the resonance peak is a crucial parameter for balancing brightness in multicolor applications. In the second part, we developed a method for a fast optimization of the geometrical parameters and we applied it to obtain the three primary colors with strong geometrical constraints, so that such structures could be manufactured in a single step by nanoimprint. Finally, we propose some improvements of these structures, in particular by reducing broadband reflection to obtain more saturated colors, or to improve the angular behavior of these structures.

Abstract

International audience; Rare earth emitters are promising in integrated optics but require complex integration on silicon. In this work, we have fabricated an Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ micro-emitter on SiO 2 on Si substrate without etching. Since pulsed laser deposition produces a high quality layer at room temperature, material can be locally deposited on top of substrates by lift-off processing. After annealing, microstructures exhibit good crystallographic quality with controlled dimensions for light confinement and narrow emission. This works allows envisioning rare-earth doped micro-photonic structures directly integrated on silicon without etching, which opens the way to integration of new functional materials on silicon platform.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate a graphene based electro-optic free-space modulator yielding a reflectance contrast of 20% over a strikingly large 250nm wavelength range, centered in the near-infrared telecom band. Our device is based on the original association of a planar Bragg reflector, topped with an electrically contacted double-layer graphene capacitor structure employing a high work-function oxide shown to confer a static doping to the graphene in the absence of an external bias, thereby reducing the switching voltage range to +/-1V. The device design, fabrication and opto-electric characterization is presented, and its behavior modeled using a coupled optical-electronic framework.

Abstract

Features of heat transport in silicon-based porous structures with different morphology before and after thermal annealing are investigated. Specifically, fractal-like porous silicon and silicon nanowire arrays samples were considered. All the structures were annealed in dry air at various temperatures in diapason from 600 °C up to 1000 °C for 20 minutes. The photoacoustic technique with gas-microphone registration was applied for the thermal diffusivity evaluation of the samples. Particularly, the amplitude frequency dependencies of photoacoustic response from the considered samples in the classical gas-microphone configuration were measured in the range from 10 Hz to 3 kHz. The simulation of the experimental dependencies with the use of appropriate model allowed us to evaluate thermal conductivity. It was found that the short time thermal annealing together with increasing annealing temperature leads to significant reduction of thermal transport in mesoporous silicon. Abstract

The paper is devoted to the study of the evaporation of water sessile drops resting on a smooth surface consisting of a vanadium dioxide thin film (∼150 nm) covering a sapphire substrate. Vanadium dioxide is considered because of the promising applications it is expected to have in new technologies for heat waste recuperation. Water drops are deposited on the substrate heated at different temperatures from 20 to 80°C, and the time dependence of the droplet shape is registered with the use of shadow imaging. This reveals that the three-phase contact line remains pinned during most of the drop lifetime, while the wetting contact angle as well as the drop volume are continuously changing. With the help of image processing, the vaporization rate of the drop is calculated. It is found that it is almost constant with time, and increases exponentially with the temperature of the substrate, well in agreement with theoretical models developed to describe the evaporation of drops with a pinned contact line. International audience; Mesoporous germanium layers (MP-Ge) were prepared with high growth rate (up to 300 nm/min) by using a new high-current-density, high-frequency bipolar electrochemical etching (BEE) process. The potential of porous semiconductor layers for optical sensing has been assessed by examining the resonance wavelength shift in the reflectance spectra before and after infiltration of ethanol.

Abstract

International audience; We have performed an extensive study of the poros ification of p-type GaAs using electrochemical etching (EE) in a hydrofluoric acid (HF)-based electrolyte. The p-doped GaAs substrates were used to study the influence of different parameters, such as current density, porosity, and etching rate. Also, etching of p-GaAs wafers in HF was investigated and characterized through different techniques, such as cathodoluminescence (CL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that after electrochemical etching, the porous layer showed a major decrease in the CL intensity and a change in the chemical composition, the elemental concentration, and the crystalline phase. Contrary to previous report on p-GaAs porosification, which believe that the formed layer is composed of porous GaAs [1-2], we bring evidence that this is not the case. The porous layer is composed mainly of porous As2O3. Finally, a model that explains the As2O3 formation on p-GaAs substrate is proposed.

Abstract

20-22 Mai 2015; International audience; Finding simple methods for the precise self-assembly of colloids onto different regions of a patterned surface is a major current issue in nanofabrication. Solving this issue could bridge the gap between top-down fabrication processes such as lithography which allows the creation of large arrays of well-defined nanostructures on a surface (e.g. nanoantennas) and bottom-up built nano-objects. In our work, latex nanoparticles were precisely located onto the gold regions of micro and nanopatterned gold/silica substrates through selective surface chemical functionalizations. This strategy allowed the trapping of nanoparticles onto the gold nanostructures with very little non-specific adsorption onto the surrounding silica.
