Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L.) is one of the most important commercial species of the northern and central Adriatic Sea. The mean annual catch of anchovy estimated by IRPEM for these areas, in the time interval 1975-1996, is equal to 25,000 tonnes. Estimates of anchovy stock biomass at sea in the time interval 1975-1996 were obtained using two population dynamics methods based on different data inputs: Virtual Population Analysis (VPA) and the DeLury model with recruitment index. VPA was carried out tuning the estimated fishing mortality rate at age by fitting on corresponding Catch Per Unit of fishing Effort (CPUE). Both VPA and the DeLury model yielded sensible results. The effect on the assessments due to the use of a different birth date and thus of split-year data was investigated. Biomass values as well as patterns over time so estimated were similar on the basis of both assessment methods and calendar year versus split-year data. In particular, the biomass in more recent years (around 100,000 tonnes) was lower than in the second half of the 1970s and first half of the 1980s (over 200,000 tonnes). The minimum value (lower than 50,000 tonnes) was always estimated in 1987, when a strong drop in the catch and crisis of the anchovy fishery took place. Though high values of both fishing effort and fishing mortality/exploitation rate were obtained for some years before 1987, very low levels of recruitment in 1986 and 1987 seem to be mainly responsible for the collapse of the stock. La anchoa (Engraulis encrasicolus, L.) es una de las especies comerciales más importantes en el norte y central Adriático. La captura media anual estimada de anchoas por el IRPEM para estas áreas en el intervalo 1975-1996, es de 25000 toneladas. Se obtuvieron estimas de la biomasa del stock de anchoa en el mar entre 1975-1996 mediante dos modelos de dinámica de poblaciones basados en diferentes entradas de datos: Análisis de Población Virtual (VPA) y el modelo de De Lury con índice de reclutamiento. El VPA se llevó a cabo sintonizando la tasa de mortalidad pesquera por edad ajustando a la correspondiente Captura por Unidad de Esfuerzo (CPUE). Tanto el VPA como el modelo de De Lury dan resultados sensibles. Se investigó el efecto sobre las evaluaciones del uso de una fecha de nacimiento diferente y en consecuencia de los datos por año. Los valores de biomasa, así como las pautas en el tiempo así estimadas fueron similares en base tanto a los métodos de evaluación como al calendario anual versus datos por año. En particular, la biomasa de los años más recientes (alrededor de 100000 toneladas) fue más baja que en la segunda mitad de los 70 y primera mitad de los 80 (unas 200000 toneladas). El valor mínimo (menor de 50000 toneladas) fue siempre estimado en 1987, cuando tuvo lugar un fuerte descenso en las capturas y una crisis en la pesquería de anchoa. Incluso si se obtuvieron valores altos de esfuerzo pesquero y tasas de mortalidad/explotación para algunos años antes de 1987, muy bajos valores de reclutamiento en 1986 y 1987 parecen ser los principales responsables del colapso de los stocks.

Presentamos el caso de una adolescente de 14 años que consultó por adenopatías en región preauricular izquierda. En el interrogatorio dirigido surgió el contacto con gatos, registrándose el antecedente de una conjuntivitis homolateral, por lo cual se planteó el Síndrome de Parinaud por enfermedad por arañazo de gato entre los diagnósticos diferenciales. We report the case of a 14-year-old patient with adenopathies in the preauricular region. During the interview, the patient stated having had contact with cats, and a history of conjunctivitis comes up. These led to the diagnosis of Parinaud syndrome caused by cat scratch disease.

Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is of great commercial importance throughout the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean, where it lives in burrows within muddy sediments. In several European countries it is assessed by means of towed underwater TV techniques. These are particularly suited to N. norvegicus because, for a number of reasons, the application of common fishery-dependent stock-assessment methods is not thorough for this species. The TV-based methodology relies on the fact that a known surface area of seabed is visually assessed and the number of N. norvegicus burrows, whose features are distinct, can be counted and their inhabitants quantified. It follows that, in theory, the same can be done for other organisms or key ecological features which appear on the footage. This study reports the results of the underwater television surveys (2009 and 2010) carried out jointly by Italy and Croatia in the Pomo/Jabuka pits, an area of the Adriatic Sea important for its N. norvegicus fishery and its hake nursery grounds. The obtained footage allowed quantification of the density of N. norvegicus in the area and the acquisition of estimates of the abundances of the squat lobster, Munida rutllanti and the sea pen Funiculina quadrangularis. The concurrent quantification of trawling activity from the footage has allowed us to place our results in the context of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management., Škamp ( Nephrops norvegicus ) je izuzetno važna gospodarska vrsta koja obitava u rupama u muljevitom sedimentu diljem sjeverno-istočnog Atlantika i Mediterana. Obzirom da uobičajene metode procjene bioloških resursa koje se zasnivaju na ribolovu nisu u potpunosti pogodne za ovu vrstu, nekoliko Europskih zemalja procjene populacije škampa obavlja korištenjem povlačne podvodne kamere. Ova metodologija bazira se na činjenici da škamp u sedimentu iskapa rupe karakterističnog izgleda koje se determiniraju i prebrojavaju vizualnim pregledom snimke dobivene povlačenjem podvodne kamere preko određene površine morskog dna. Teoretski, ova metodologija se može primijeniti i za procjene drugih vrsta ili ekoloških parametara koji su zabilježeni na snimkama. Ova studija iznosi rezultate istraživanja podvodnom kamerom (2009. i 2010. godine) koje su zajednički proveli Italija i Hrvatska na području Jabučke kotline u Jadranskom moru. Ovo područje koje se intenzivno gospodarski iskorištava značajno je kao glavno mrijestilište i rastilište većeg broja pridnenih vrsta, posebno škampa i oslića ( Merluccius merluccius ) Na osnovu dobivenih snimki izrađena je procjena brojnosti i biomase škampa, kao i procjena brojnosti hlapića ( Munida rutllanti ) i morskog pera ( Funiculina quadrangularis ). Istodobna procjena tragova koćarenja zabilježenih na snimkama omogućila nam je da ove rezultate stavimo u kontekst ekosustavnog pristupa gospodarenju bioloških resursa mora.

An impact assessment of a Fishery Observing System (FOS) network in the Adriatic Sea was carried out with an ocean circulation model fully-coupled with a data assimilation system. The FOS data are single point vertical values of temperature collected in 2007. In this study, we used the Observing System Experiment (OSE) and Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) methodologies to estimate the impact of different FOS design and sensors implementation. OSEs were conducted to evaluate real observations and they show that the FOS network improves the analysis significantly, especially during the stratification season. Root mean square (RMS) of temperature errors are reduced by about 44% and 36% in the upper and lower layers respectively. We also demonstrated that a similar impact can be obtained with a reduced number of vessels if the spatial coverage of the data points does not change significantly. In the OSSE, the impact of the implementation of a CTD (conductivity–temperature–depth) sensor in place of the existing temperature sensor was tested with identical twin approaches between January and April 2007. The results imply that the assimilation of salinity does not improve the analysis significantly during the winter and spring seasons.

Over the last several years, a great deal of emphasis has been given to the use of participatory research to enhance knowledge co-production between fisheries stakeholders, involving fishers in the sampling of their catches both for scientific and control purposes. Indeed, this approach could complement data collection through trawl surveys and onboard observers, which is usually expensive and thus, does not allow much spatio-temporal coverage. Within the EU participatory research project, GAP2, electronic logbooks were installed on board otter-trawlers to collect haul-by-haul geo-referenced catch data in the Adriatic Sea (NW Mediterranean Sea). Between September 2012 and December 2013, catches of some of the most important otter-trawl target species (8 species including teleosts, cephalopods, and crustaceans) were recorded in 3588 self-sampled hauls. Because a major concern for the use of these data is related to their quality, self-sampling was run concurrently with a scientific observers’ program, which allowed the detailed monitoring of catches from 249 hauls. The latter dataset was used to test the reliability of fishers’ self-sampled data and for their validation. In all species, no significant disagreement between the two datasets was observed. The full self-sampled dataset was thus used to describe the spatio-temporal changes in catches, as derived by observers’ data, allowing important insights into species’ life cycles. Results agreed with available literature information and fishers’ experience-based knowledge, which was thus embedded in the process of data validation and results interpretation. The collaboration between scientists and fishermen was demonstrated to be a valuable approach for generating reliable fisheries data, allowing a better understanding and quantitative descriptions of species’ life cycles and the attainment of a common base of knowledge for the enforcement of spatially explicit fisheries management.

Mid-water pair trawling (PTM) targeting small pelagic resources represents a key fishing activity in the Adriatic Sea. This fishery is experiencing a long period of crisis due to resource depletion and the lack of appropriate market strategies, and vessels spend most of the time searching for fishing schools. The searching strategy largely depends on the interaction between vessels: the captains of the {PTM} units take their decision also checking the position and the fishing status of other vessels. Understanding this strategy represents a key step towards a more effective resource management, since strategies directly determine the pattern of fishing effort. A Conditional Logit model has been devised to analyze fishermen's strategy as a non-cooperative game. This category of games is characterized by the existence of (at least) one equilibrium point - a Nash Equilibrium - in which each player plays his strategy, that is a Best Response to the strategies of the other players. This equilibrium point was estimated for the different scenarios defined by environmental (sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure) and economic (fuel and fish prices at market) variables. Vessel Monitoring System data were used to capture fleet activity, while different datasets were collected to reconstruct environmental and economic drivers. Results indicate a good predictive power of the model, and suggest that the equilibrium strategy that guides units' behaviour is invariant with respect to environmental conditions, whereas it is largely influenced by economic factors. These latter, via strategies, may determine important consequences on the resources in terms of exploited areas and the impact of fishing activity. In particular, a low fuel price when fish price is high leads to higher values of CPUE, and then to a more efficient but also impacting fishing activity.
