Objetivo Examinar la ocurrencia del consumo de alcohol en mujeres embarazadas o en periodo de lactancia de la provincia de Córdoba (Argentina) y los factores de riesgo/protección que explican ese consumo. Metodología Participaron 475 mujeres (202 embarazadas y 273 lactantes) entre 18-47 años que completaron una encuesta en línea, que indagó sobre su consumo de alcohol y una serie de factores de riesgo y protección para el consumo de alcohol. Resultados El 93,1% y 68,1% de las mujeres embarazadas y lactantes indicaron que no consumían alcohol en su condición. Se observó un perfil más riesgoso en mujeres lactantes. En embarazadas, solo la percepción de riesgo permitió explicar su consumo. En lactantes, la percepción de riesgo, el consumo de convivientes, la indicación de no beber en su condición por parte de familiares/amistades y la aprobación del consumo de alcohol en otras mujeres lactantes permitieron explicar su consumo. Discusión Estos resultados ponen en evidencia la necesidad de brindar información clara y precisa sobre los riesgos asociados al consumo de alcohol durante el embarazo y, especialmente, la lactancia y la necesidad de incorporar cuatro actores sociales en las campañas preventivas: los profesionales de la salud, los/las convivientes, la familia y las amistades de la mujer gestante/lactante.

Although protective behavioural strategies (PBS) have shown to be effective in minimising alcohol-related negative consequences, research on the explanatory factors of their use is very scarce. Perceived efficacy has been demonstrated to be one of the most relevant explanatory factors in the use of health-related protective behaviours. The present study prospectively examines the relationship between the perceived efficacy of PBS in reducing alcohol-related negative consequences and the use of PBS in a community-based sample of young adults. In addition, the moderating role of drinking motives in this relationship is also examined. Methods. Prospective design with a baseline assessment and a 2-month follow up. Using a targeted sampling procedure, 339 young adults were recruited from the community [mean age: 21.1 (SD = 2.21); female = 50.7%] and completed questionnaires to measure perceived efficacy of PBS and drinking motives at baseline and PBS use at follow up. Results. Perceived efficacy of PBS at baseline was positively associated with PBS use at follow up, and these relationships were weaker as social, enhancement and coping motives scores increased. Discussion and Conclusions. Our findings support the need to include the perceived efficacy of PBS to reduce alcohol-related negative consequences in future interventions aimed at promoting PBS use. The objective of this study was to compare performance on a comprehensive impulsivity battery of SUD outpatients who dropout versus those who do not dropout and of abstainers versus relapsers at 3 and 12 months of treatment follow-up. Impulsivity was measured at the start of treatment and adherence and relapse at 3 and 12 months. The participants are 115 outpatients with SUD. Motor impulsivity (Affective Go/No Go), attentional impulsivity (Stroop), delay discounting (Monetary Choice Questionnaire; MCQ), and decision making (Iowa Gambling Task; IGT) were assessed. Impulsivity was not associated with dropout. There were no relationships between treatment outcomes and the MCQ and IGT. Stroop and affective Go-No Go were associated with relapse at 3 and 12 months. Affective motor disinhibition and cognitive disinhibition predict relapse in outpatients. La impulsividad y la toma de riesgos se asocian positivamente al consumo de alcohol. Asimismo, la impulsividad y la toma de riesgos aumentan luego de la ingesta aguda de alcohol. Objetivo. Examinar el efecto de una dosis de alcohol (0.6/0.7 g/kg mujeres y varones) sobre el desempeño en pruebas de control inhibitorio, sensibilidad a las recompensas y toma de riesgos en estudiantes con alta (IMP+) y baja (IMP-) impulsividad rasgo. Método. Los participantes (n=85, 43 mujeres, entre 21-27 años) completaron las pruebas BART, GoStop y SKIP antes y después de la ingesta de una bebida con alcohol o una bebida placebo. Resultados. Los resultados muestran un aumento, inducido por el alcohol, en la toma de riesgos en mujeres y mayores fallas en el control inhibitorio tras la ingesta de alcohol, especialmente en hombres. La hipótesis sobre una mayor impulsividad conductual entre quienes exhibían mayor impulsividad rasgo fue parcialmente corroborada. Conclusiones. El principal hallazgo de este trabajo radica en el incremento, inducido por el alcohol, de la impulsividad y toma de riesgos, y el efecto modulador del sexo sobre este efecto. Impulsivity and risk taking are positively associated with alcohol consumption. Likewise, impulsivity and risk taking increase after acute alcohol intake. Objective. Examine the effect of a dose of alcohol (0.6/0.7 g/kg women and men) on performance in inhibitory control tests, sensitivity to rewards and risk taking in students with high (IMP+) and low (IMP-) trait impulsivity. Method. Participants (n= 85, 43 women, between 21-27 years) completed the BART, GoStop and SKIP tasks before and after the ingestion of an alcoholic beverage or a placebo beverage. Results. The results show an increase, induced by alcohol, in risk taking in women and greater failures in the inhibitory control after alcohol intake, especially in men. The hypothesis about greater behavioral impulsivity among those exhibiting greater trait impulsivity was partially corroborated. Conclusions. Resumen El consumo de sustancias es altamente prevalente en estudiantes universitarios de Argentina y el mundo. Diferenciar consumidores con diversos patrones de consumo de sustancias es importante para identificar aquellos más vulnerables a avanzar hacia un consumo patológico. Por ello, el objetivo fue identificar, mediante Análisis de Clases Latentes (ACL) aplicado a diferentes indicadores de consumo de alcohol, tabaco y marihuana, las clases de consumidores y observar si dichas clases diferían en la densidad de familiares con abuso de alcohol y otros indicadores de consumo. El análisis se realizó en un total de 4.497 estudiantes de primer año que completaron instrumentos para medir: 1-consumo de alcohol, 2-consecuencias negativas del consumo de alcohol y 3-historia familiar de abuso de alcohol. Así se identificaron cuatro clases de consumidores: 1-CATM: Consumo Elevado de Alcohol, Consumo de Tabaco y Marihuana; 2-CMEA: Consumo Moderado/Elevado de Alcohol, Sin Consumo de Otras Sustancias; 3-CMBA: Consumo Moderado/Bajo de Alcohol, Sin Consumo de Otras Sustancias; y 4-SC: Sin Consumo de Sustancias. Los miembros de las clases CATM y CMEA reportaron niveles de consumo de alcohol significativamente más elevados que el resto de las clases. Los integrantes de CATM presentaron consumo extremo de alcohol. Las clases sc y CATM exhibieron mayor densidad de familiares con abuso de alcohol que las otras clases. La mayor parte de los encuestados fueron clasificados en categorías de consumo de alto riesgo, caracterizadas por co-uso de sustancias o por consumo elevado de alcohol. Estos patrones de consumo se han asociado a numerosas consecuencias negativas. Abstract Substance use is highly prevalent among college students in Argentina and the world. Differentiating users with different patterns of substance use is important to identify those at a higher vulnerability to progress towards pathological use. The aims were to identify, by means of Latent Class Analysis applied to different alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use indicators, the classes of substance use and analyze whether these classes exhibit differences in the density of relatives with a history of alcohol abuse and other alcohol use indicators. A total of 4.497 freshmen completed instruments to measure: 1- alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use, 2- alcohol related negative consequences, and 3- family history of alcohol abuse. Four classes of substance users were identified: 1- HATM: heavy alcohol use, with tobacco and marijuana use, 2-MHA: moderate/high alcohol use, without other substances, 3-MZA: moderate/low alcohol use, without other substances, and 4- NS: no substance use. The members of the HATM and MHA classes reported significantly higher levels of alcohol use than the rest of the classes. HATM members presented extreme binge drinking. The NS and HATM classes exhibited a higher density of relatives with a history of alcohol abuse than the other classes. Most students were classified into high-risk consumption clas-ses, characterized by co-use of substances or by heavy alcohol use. These patterns of substance use have been associated with a variety of negative consequences. Diferenciar usuários com diferentes padrões de consumo de substâncias é importante para identificar aqueles mais vulneráveis à transição para um consumo patológico. Para isso, o objetivo foi identificar, por meio da Análise de Classe Latente aplicada a diferentes indicadores de consumo de álcool, tabaco e maconha, as classes de consumidores, e observar se essas classes diferiam na densidade de parentes com consumo abusivo de álcool e outros indicadores de consumo. A análise foi realizada com alunos do primeiro ano (n = 4.497) que completaram os instrumentos para medir: 1-consumo de álcool, 2-consequências negativas do consumo de álcool e 3-histórico familiar de abuso de álcool. Foram identificadas quatro classes de usuários: 1-CATM: alto consumo de álcool, consumo de tabaco e maconha; 2-CMEA: consumo moderado / alto de álcool, sem consumo de outras substâncias; 3-CMBA: consumo moderado / baixo de álcool, sem consumo de outras substâncias; e 4-sc: nenhum uso de substância. Os membros das classes CATM e CMEA relataram níveis significativamente mais elevados de consumo de álcool do que o resto das classes. Os membros do CATM apresentaram consumo extremo de álcool. As classes sc e CATM apresentaram maior densidade de familiares com abuso de álcool do que as demais classes. A maioria dos entrevistados foi classificada em categorias de consumo de alto risco, caracterizadas pelo uso concomitante de substâncias ou pelo alto consumo de álcool. Esses padrões de consumo têm sido associados a inúmeras consequências negativas.

Se examinaron variaciones estacionales en el uso de estrategias conductuales de protección (ECP) y en indicadores de consumo de alcohol en dos épocas del calendario universitario: cursado en primavera y receso estival. Participaron 223 universitarios que reportaron consumo de alcohol, consecuencias negativas de dicho consumo y uso de ECP. Se encontró una relación negativa, principalmente durante el cursado y entre las mujeres, entre ECP (notablemente la dimensión “maneras de tomar”) y consumo de alcohol. Durante el receso aumentó la frecuencia de consumo y el volumen semanal consumido. Estas variaciones fueron sexo-dependientes: el consumo aumentó en hombres, pero no en mujeres; y las mujeres, pero no los hombres, reportaron mayor uso de ECP y, menor cantidad de consecuencias negativas durante el receso que durante el cursado. El uso de ECP puede estar asociado, particularmente entre las mujeres, con un menor consumo de alcohol y con menos problemas derivados del mismo. This work examined seasonal variations in the use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and alcohol outcomes in two distinct times of the academic calendar: 1-spring semester and 2-summer break. We examined -both within each time and prospectively- the relationship between the use of PBS and alcohol outcomes. A sample of 223 college students reported - via two online surveys use of PBS, alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences. Use of PBS (notably the dimension “manner of drinking”) was negatively associated with alcohol outcomes, particularly in women and during spring. The frequency of use (in women only) and the weekly volume of alcohol ingested were greater during the summer. Women, but not men, reported greater use of PBS and fewer negative consequences during the break than at spring. Introduction: Although simultaneous polysubstance use (SPU) is associated with greater harms than concurrent polysubstance use (CPU), no previous research has examined the effectiveness of harm reduction strategies in reducing drug-related harms in people who use drugs simultaneously and whether these strategies have a differential impact on drug-related negative consequences according to SPU patterns. Objectives: to examine the relationship between SPU patterns, harm reduction strategies and drug-related consequences experienced among people who attend dance music settings, and to examine the moderating role of SPU patterns in the relationship between harm reduction strategies and drug-related negative consequences Methods: a web-based survey was used to gather data from 649 substance-using attendees at dance music settings (mean age=26.2, 68% male). The survey collected data on: settings of last party attended, drug use, harm reduction strategies used and drug-related negative consequences experienced during last party attended. Results: Latent class analysis identified two SPU profiles: Moderate SPU and Severe SPU. Participants in the severe SPU class experienced more drug-related negative consequences at their last party in comparison with those in the moderate SPU class. Regardless of SPU pattern, avoiding binge drinking was related to fewer drug-related negative consequences, whilst avoiding mixing stimulants was related to fewer drug-related negative consequences only among those participants in the severe simultaneous polysubstance use class. Conclusions: These findings could help to inform the design of messages and tailored interventions aimed at minimizing drug-related negative consequences among people who use multiple substances in the dance music scene.

People who use ecstasy and other drugs recreationally adopt strategies to minimize drug-related negative consequences. However, there are no studies that empirically analyze which strategies relate to fewer self-reported health consequences in polysubstance users who consume ecstasy. The main aim of this study was to examine harm reduction strategies adopted by polysubstance users who consume ecstasy along with the relationship between such strategies and health-related negative consequences. We accessed 594 Spanish residents who use ecstasy and other drugs, who completed an online questionnaire. Among the seven strategies explored, most of them were used always or almost always by more than half of the participants when using drugs within the last year. A high use of the ‘planning drug use sessions’ strategy was associated with a lower probability of experiencing stomach pain, chest pain, nausea/vomiting, loss of consciousness, and injuries/fractures. Participants reporting high use of the ‘spacing out doses’ strategy were less likely to experience headache, insomnia, fights/aggression, and loss of consciousness. This study provides empirical information about the usefulness of harm reduction strategies in minimizing drug-related negative consequences. These results may be useful when designing preventive and harm reduction messages for people who use ecstasy and other drugs. Fil: Vera, Belén del Valle. College freshman are at-risk for hazardous alcohol drinking and for experiencing alcohol-related negative consequences. This is exacerbated in those featuring an early age of first alcohol use or of first drunkenness. It remains unclear which of these milestones is more strongly associated with alcohol outcomes. We examined, in Argentinean college drinkers (n = 4088; 43% men; racially and ethnically homogeneous), the association of age at drinking onset and progression to drunkenness (drunkenness naïve [Drunk-Naïve]; No-Delay [same age of first alcohol use and first alcohol intoxication]; one year of delay between age of first alcohol use and first alcohol intoxication; ≥2years of delay) on several alcohol outcomes. Methods: A survey measured substance use, age at drinking and drunkenness onset and alcohol-related consequences. Results: Alcohol consumption per drinking occasion was significantly greater in men than in women. An early drinking onset (alcohol use before age 13) and lifetime drunkenness independently exacerbated alcohol consumption per drinking occasion and during the last year. In men, Early-Onset was associated with a greater number of alcohol-related consequences when the delay between Early-Onset and the first drunkenness episode was 1 or ≥2 years yet did not significantly alter the number of negative consequences in Drunk-naïve or No-delay drinkers. In women, Early-Onset significantly enhanced the number of negative consequences when the delay was two years, but not when the delay was one-year or in Drunk-naïve or No-delay drinkers. Conclusions: The window between the first contact with alcohol and the first episode of drunkenness is a critical period to reduce alcohol-related problems. Fil: Vera, Belén del Valle. The study analyzed decision making under ambiguity and risk, impulsivity, and acute effects of alcohol intoxication on these processes in subjects exhibiting either one, both, or none of these conditions: problem drinking and at-risk gambling involvement. Subjects (N = 110, ages 18-57; 57.3% men) were evaluated on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994), the Game of Dice Task (GDT; Brand et al., 2005) and the Go-Stop Impulsivity Paradigm (GoStop; Dougherty, Mathias, & Marsh, 2003) before and after the ingestion of an alcohol (inducing≈0.45 g/kg) or a placebo drink. At-risk gamblers (ARG+) showed better performance on the IGT than not-at-risk gamblers and nongamblers (ARG-). ARG+ and subjects intoxicated with alcohol picked more cards than their respective controls from the high frequency of punishment decks. ARG+ without problematic drinking exhibited greater impulsivity in the GoStop (i.e., exhibited a significantly lower percentage of response inhibition at the 50-ms latency) after the ingestion of alcohol. GDT scores were unaffected by gambling, problem drinking, or acute alcohol dosing. The study confirmed the facilitatory effect of acute alcohol on impulsivity. A new and important finding was the altered IGT performance in ARGs. This is particularly striking when considering that these are not pathological gamblers. Apparently, even this low level of gambling severity is sufficient to alter decision making. The lower level of sensitivity to frequency of punishment apparently improved performance in this population, but it can present risk for the development of more severe gambling behaviors, particularly when considering that the acute alcohol treatment increased their impulsivity and had an independent effect upon sensitivity to punishment. Los objetivos fueron describir la ocurrencia de consumo de alcohol y de sus consecuencias negativas en estudiantes argentinos, y analizar diferencias en el comportamiento riesgoso, consecuencias negativas y sensibilidad a la recompensa y al castigo en función de la edad de inicio del consumo de alcohol, el consumo episódico elevado y el consumo hasta la ebriedad. Además, analizamos la relación entre el consumo de alcohol y la percepción del consumo en los pares. Participaron 106 estudiantes. Aquellos con consumo episódico elevado y consumo hasta la ebriedad presentaron más consecuencias negativas. Aquellos con consumo hasta la ebriedad evidenciaron una mayor sensibilidad a la recompensa y al castigo. Aquellos con inicio temprano mostraron mayor sensibilidad a la recompensa. Quienes perciben un mayor consumo en sus pares consumen más alcohol. Estos resultados reflejan la relación entre variables de personalidad y sociales y la propensión a exhibir consumo riesgoso de alcohol., The aims were to describe the occurrence of alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems in Argentinean students, and analyze differences in risk behavior, alcohol-related problems and sensitivity to reward and punishment, as a function of heavy episodic drinking, drunkenness episodes and age at drinking onset. We analyzed the relationship between alcohol consumption and drinking social norms. The final sample was composed by 106 students. Subjects with drunkenness episodes had more negative consequences and greater sensitivity to reward and punishment, while those with heavy episodic drinking had more problems resulting from alcohol consumption. Moreover, students with early drinking onset showed greater sensitivity to reward. Students who perceived greater alcohol consumption among their peers consumed more alcohol themselves. These results highlight the association between personality and societal variables and the probability of exhibiting risky alcohol consumption.

Aims: The aim of the study was to analyze independent and potential interactive effects of age at drinking onset and family history of alcohol abuse on subsequent patterns of alcohol drinking, alcohol-related problems and substance use. Methods: Participants were college students (60.3% females, mean age = 20.27 ± 2.54 years) from the city of Córdoba, Argentina. Several measures were used to assess alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The Spanish version of the Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire was used to assess alcohol-related problems. Factorial analyses of variance, or its non-parametric equivalent, were performed to explore differences in substance use behaviors and alcohol-related problems in subjects with early or late drinking onset and with or without family history of alcohol abuse. Chi-square tests were conducted to analyze the association between these two risk factors and categorical measures of alcohol, tobacco and drug use. Results: Early onset of drinking was associated with amount of consumption of alcohol including up to hazardous levels, as well as tobacco and drug use. However, the frequency of alcohol problems and frequency of episodes of alcohol intoxication were only related to age of onset in those with a positive family history of alcohol problems. The present work was aimed at analyzing the psychometric properties of the Spanish Brief YAACQ in a sample of Argentinean college students applying the Item Response Theory. Participants were 302 college students (59.9% females) who reported drinking alcohol within the last month. The B-YAACQ was translated into Spanish and the psychometric properties of this Spanish version were analyzed applying the Rasch Model, as well as testing group difference and conducting correlational analyses. The verification of the global fit of the data showed adequate indexes for the persons and items. The reliability estimate of the items was very high (.97), while the reliability estimate of the persons was modest (.65). All but one item had adequate fit indexes. B-YAACQ scores were strongly related to measures of hazardous alcohol drinking, including frequency of drunkenness episodes and frequency of heavy episodic drinking, indicating concurrent validity. The item content along the severity continuum was fairly similar to that found with US and Dutch samples. Three items had a gender bias against men and another three items showed a gender bias against women, indicating the presence of differential item functioning cancelation. The map of items and persons suggests that these 24 items do not provide a full coverage of the continuum of alcohol problems at the lower levels of the continuum. Overall, results from the present study suggest that the Spanish B-YAACQ offers a brief and efficient way to identify alcohol problems in Spanish-speaking college students. Fil: Pilatti, Angelina.
