Abstract

A silicon pixel detector, developed in RD19, and consisting of 4 planes, [similar to] 30 [cm.sup.2] each, is operating for the first time in the lead ion experiment WA97 at CERN. The 288 CMOS readout chips are bump-bonded to 48 Si detector matrices, assembled in 8 identical arrays. The total number of pixel cells is nearly 300 000 and each cell, 75 [[micro]meter] x 500 [[micro]meter], contains a complete signal processing chain. Overall dead area is less than 3%.

Abstract

The particle identification in ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) at LHC will be achieved by two complementary systems based on time of flight measurement, at low $p_t$, and on the Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) technique, at $p_t$ ranging from 2 to 5 GeV/$c$, respectively. The High Momentum PID (HMPID) system will cover $\sim$5\% of the phase space, the single arm detector array beeing composed by seven 1.3$\times$1.3 m$^2$ CsI-RICH modules placed at 4.7 m from the interaction point where a density of about 50 particles/m$^2$ is expected.\\ A 1 m$^2$ prototype, 2/3 of HMPID module size, has been successfully tested at the CERN/PS beam where 18 photoelectrons per event have been obtained with 3 GeV/c pions and 10 mm liquid $\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{F}_{14}$ radiator. Mechanical problems related to the liquid radiator vessel construction have been solved and the prototype, fully equipped, will be tested at the CERN/SPS to investigate the PID capability in high particle density events.\\ In this report, after an introductory discussion on the requirements for PID in ALICE, the HMPID prototype is described and the main results of beam tests on large area CsI photocathodes, operated in RICH detectors, are given.

Abstract

We have studied bound states of the Schrodinger equation for an attractive potential with any finite number (P) of Dirac delta-functions in R-n where n = 1, 2, 3..... The potential is radially symmetric for n greater than or equal to 2 and is given as V(r) = -(h2)/(2m) Sigma(i=1)(P) sigma(i)delta(r - r(i)) where sigma(i) > 0, r(1) < r(2) < (...) 2l+n-2 and none otherwise. Wehave also proven that there are at most P positive roots for the equation X-22(k) = 0 where X = ((X21) (X11) (X22) (X12)) = MpMp-1...M-1 and M-i is an element of SL (2, R) are the particular where X = G21 X 22 transfer matrices mentioned above.

%RD-19 \\ \\ In a collaborative effort between particle physics institutes and microelectronics industry we are undertaking the development of true 2-dimensional semiconductor particle detectors with on-chip signal processing and information extraction: the so-called micropattern detector. This detector is able to cope in a robust way with high multiplicity events at high rates, while allowing for a longer detector lifetime under irradiation and a thinner sensitive depletion region. Therefore, it will be ideally suited for the complicated events in the LHC p-p collider experiments. Following a $^{\prime}$stepping stone$^{\prime}$ approach several telescopes of pixel planes, totalling now 600 cm$^{2}$ with \(>\)~1~M elements have been used in the WA97, NA50 and NA57 lead ion experiments. This new technology has facilitated the tracking considerably (see Fig.1). Not only Si but also GaAs and possibly diamond matrices can be connected to the readout matrix. Tests with GaAs pixel detectors with the RD-19 readout have been successful. The same devices have been used to detect photons coming from a scintillating fibre bundle or in X-ray images. They have been used as the anode array in a vacuum phototube or as a light detector behind an image intensifier.\\ \\

Abstract

Results are presented on dimuon production for invariant masses % interval ranging from the dimuon threshold up to the $J/\Psi$ meson. Proton-tungsten and sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV $/c$/nucleon were measured over a large kinematic region, using the HELIOS/3 dimuon spectrometer at the CERN SPS. In the continuum regions between the dimuon threshold and the $\rho/\omega$ meso ns, and between the $\phi$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons, an excess is observed in S--W interactions relative to minimum bias p--W interactions. The observed excess is continuous over the explored mass range and has no apparent resonant structure. In the low mass region the dimuon yield increases by $(76\pm 4)$\% of the corresponding p--W dimuon spectrum, whereas in the higher mass region the exces s amounts to $2.4\pm 0.3$ times the p--W yield nearly independent of the charged multiplicity and rapidity. The observed excess for the low mass region follows an exponential distribution with an average inverse slope parameter $T$ of $(197\pm6)$ MeV$/c^2$, constant for all but the lowest charged multiplicity interval and consistent with the slope of the excess in the higher mass region . In the invariant mass range of 1.35 - 2.5 GeV$/c^2$ the continuum dimuon mass distribution observed in p--W interactions can be quantitatively understood as a sum of three expected contribut ions (vector meson decays, semileptonic charm decays and Drell-Yan process), but both in central and in minimum bias S--W interactions an excess is observed with respect to these sources which doe s not depend on centrality, nor very strongly on the transverse momentum.

Abstract

The charged particle multiplicity distributions measured by two experiments, WA97 and NA57, in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c have been analyzed in the framework of the Wounded Nucleon Model (WNM). We obtain a good description of the data within the centrality range of our samples. This allows us to make use of the measured multiplicities to estimate the number of wounded nucleons of the collision.

Abstract

Results are presented on dimuon production for invariant masses ranging from the dimuon threshold up to the J/Psi meson. Proton-tungsten and sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c/nucleon were measured over a large kinematic region, using the HELIOS/3 dimuon spectrometer at the CERN SPS. In the continuum regions between the dimuon threshold and the rho/omega mesons, and between the phi and J/Psi mesons, an excess is observed in S-W interactions relative to minimum bias p-W interactions. The observed excess is continuous over the explored mass range and has no apparent resonant structure. In the low mass region the dimuon yield increases by (76 +/- 4)% of the corresponding p-W dimuon spectrum, whereas in the higher mass region the excess amounts to 2.4 +/- 0.3 times the p-W yield. The observed excess for the low mass region follows an exponential transverse mass distribution with an average inverse slope parameter T of (190 +/- 5) MeV/c(2), constant for all but the lowest charged multiplicity interval and consistent with the slope of the excess in the higher mass region. In the invariant mass range of 1.35-2.5 GeV/c(2) the continuum dimuon mass distribution observed in p-W interactions can be quantitatively understood as a sum of three expected contributions (vector meson decays, semileptonic charm decays and Drell-Yan process), but both in central and in minimum bias S-W interactions an excess is observed with respect to these sources which does not depend on centrality, nor very strongly on the transverse momentum.

Matrix algebra can be used to construct special polynomials, such as third-degree polynomials and higher-degree polynomials. The same method can be used for other special cases, including the Laguerre, Hermite and Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds. An example where Nth degree polynomials are represented as N + 1-dimensional vectors with polynomial coefficients as entries is presented.

Abstract

We study the influence of lexical subsumption on the semantic proximity of terms. By studying the semantic relation between lexically subsumed terms in an existing controlled vocabulary and those in a corpus, we formulate hypotheses on the underlying specific relations. These hypotheses enable us to propose an ordering of term variants found in the corpus, by probability of decreasing semantic proximity. Results from our experiment show that surface indices like the presence of proper names, compounds and the number of added words in a term variant are criteria for ordering the variants of the same term. The ranking obtained will enable us to form more semantically-cohesive clusters. Applications targeted are text mining, question-answering and science and technology watch.
