CITIES & towns , *PUBLIC spaces , *PEDESTRIAN areas , *OPEN spaces , *URBAN planning , *ZONING - Abstract
The increasing popularity of public open spaces has enhanced the quality of the spaces and caused to question the accessibility component more and to question even the accessibility possibilities in the activity areas offered by the spaces. In this context, the analysis of accessibility for the disabled use of the pedestrian zone, which is discussed in the study, its usability by the physically disabled and their behavioral maps are emphasized, and the qualitative research method has been used. Questioning different user groups' expectations towards pedestrian zones in urban areas and revealing their needs will reveal the planning and design decisions required for the city. The study, designed in line with these criteria, aims to contribute to the cities' livability by determining the accessibility of public spaces and landscape character analyzes in cities where there is increasing intense urbanization due to population growth. In the study, it was determined that the efforts made by disabled individuals to improve their personal growth create a serious awareness within the scope of social responsibility. Besides, the urban facilities, roads, and sidewalks in pedestrian transportation, disabled individuals' rights, architectural structures, and inaccessibility in open public spaces are also found to be the most important needs. As a result, suggestions for more accessible and sustainable urban management models for city planning have been developed in line with the principle of "Design for All". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: Historically, terrorism has occurred in various regions of the world and has been considered a local problem until the September, 11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001. After 9/11, terrorism has become a global concern. The definition of terrorism has changed from a violent act of a group of local people against their own government for political gains to a violent act of people of a country against another country for political attention. Now a global phenomenon, terrorism has become analogous to a state of war, affecting children and families all over the world and creating a demand for mental health services directed at helping people cope with their feelings following terrorist attacks. This study investigates Turkish elementary school students' perceptions of worldwide terrorism. Method: Participants comprised 190 fourth and fifth grade elementary school students (98 boys and 92 girls) from four elementary schools in Istanbul. 98 students were in fourth grade and 92 students were in fifth grade. Students' ages ranged from 9 to 15 (M=10.66, SD=0.76). The Questionnaire of Children's Perception of Terror (QoCPoT) was developed by the authors and is used in this study. Data were analyzed in SPSS 14. Results: The results indicate that most children know that terrorist attacks took place in Turkey, the United States and around the world. Students most frequently defined terrorism as "the killing of innocent people" and categorized terrorists as "bandits." They report feeling bad when they hear the word "terrorism." Findings suggest that there are gender differences in children's perception of terrorism in the affective and cognitive domains. Discussion: This study provides preliminary information about Turkish children's perceptions of local and global terrorism in cognitive and affective domains of functioning. In general, most children in the study are knowledgeable about the terrorist attacks took place in Turkey, the United States and around the world. It is likely that the media has had an impact on the amount of information children receive on terrorism. Children's responses show that their definition of terrorism is akin to the original definition of terrorism. (Contains 7 tables.)

Yapılan bu çalışmalar doğrultusunda fiziksel ve zihinsel gelişimini teşvik edici tasarımların yapılması için bilimsel, ekolojik, teknik (ulaşılabilirlik, kullanılabilirlik vb.) kriterlerin yanı sıra çocuk oyun alanı tasarım kriterleri dikkate alınarak öneriler sunulmuştur., Children's playgrounds located in urban open green areas are among the most preferred recreational areas. These areas have the effect of increasing the quality of life of the users. However, due to the increasing housing need today, it is seen that the green areas in the cities are decreasing and even green areas are not included enough in the zoning plans. For this reason, urban spaces have started to be used frequently for the green area and recreational activity needs of children. Although not suitable for recreational needs, children's playground designs are made that do not comply with standards, even in case of insufficient scale. The use and adequacy of children's playgrounds located on the transportation axis in the city and created in urban spaces is the main purpose of the study, and appropriate design proposals have been developed by using observation and survey methods. 3 different children's playgrounds in terms of quality and quantity, located on the transportation axes of Fener District, where the housing density is high in Rize, are discussed in the study. As a result of the study, it has been determined that traditional children's playground equipment is included in the selected children's playgrounds, urban spaces are used in the selection of the place, there is no age group discrimination in the designs of the children's playgrounds and there is no diversity in the play activities to be done. In addition, the inadequacy of the planting design in the children's playgrounds and the neglect of the structural areas have negatively affected the image of the city. In the second stage of the study, the safety needs of children and parents were discussed. In line with these studies, suggestions were presented considering scientific, ecological, technical (accessibility, usability, etc.) criteria as well as children's playground design criteria in order to make designs that encourage physical and mental development.

- Abstract
Purpose The main purpose of this case study is to investigate the effect of increasing negative risk factors on children in outdoor playgrounds. There is a close relationship between children's playgrounds and children's health and safety in the open green areas that are gradually decreasing in the urban landscape. Children are faced with increasing parental concerns (abduction, harassment, self-harm, and inability to socialize), attention deficit in children, obesity and depression diseases. For this reason, the quality and livability of the environment we live in appear as factors that affect the decisions of parents on their children. Design/Methodology/Approach In this study, environmental factors and the quality of the environment were examined and the study questioning the concerns of parents about the use of children's playgrounds was discussed in three parts. The first part of the study consists of (i) the examination of children's playgrounds by the parents, the second part consists of (ii) the socio-demographic characteristics of the parents and the third part consists of (iii) the evaluation of the park criteria. Findings The findings obtained show that that parents with young children (2-4 years) (r =-,191*; r =,214**) prefer shopping malls suitable for all weather conditions (r =,261**) if there is not a playground in the garden of the house lived, but in some cases, the shopping mall is not preferred due to the risk of disease transmission and it brings a serious financial burden to families (r =-,163*), and if the parents are given a chance to prefer, they prefer a natural playground made of natural materials (r =-,220*). However, fathers did not prefer to wait at a very close distance for a well-groomed (r =,176*) control (r =,228*) where their children can spend time with their friends (r=,247**) on weekends alone (r =,166*), but it was determined that they were worried about their children being excluded and harmed by their friends (r =,249**).

Bitkilendirme tasarımlarının her birinde egzotik tür kullanımı yerine Bartın kentine ait doğal türler (Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, Pyracantha coccinea, Cerastium tomentosum, vb.) kullanılmıştır. As plant material has great visual and functional importance and it is often used within landscape architecture, it can be easily said that it is one of the most important physical components of landscape architecture and landscape planning. Owing to recent improvements in biotechnology and gene researches, it is possible to use any plant species more easily and in the desired quantity. In this research, a native species of Black Sea Region of Turkey, Sorbus torminalis L.Crants, was examined as an important plant material for landscape architecture and some information regarding its vegetative and generative seedling methods and its adaptation to the outer media were provided for the implementers. This study performed in four stages. In the first stage, the determination of Sorbus torminalis L. - Abstract
Urban parks, public buildings, school gardens, residences and open green spaces that we frequently encounter within urban landscape play an important role in the formation of urban identity. Urban identity created by utilizing environmental quality components provides users with a more habitable environment. Plant diversity in open green spaces affecting urban identity positively and providing users with a more habitable environment varies also in terms of identity and position of a city. This study conducted in Bartin in the Western Black Sea region consisted of three main phases intended for (/) examining Lamium purpureum L. var. purpureum in terms of users' choices, (ii) evaluation of plant compositions created within urban landscape, and (iii) results of soil analysis of selected areas. A questionnaire study was applied to 150 users about areas of usage of open green spaces and usage forms of Lamium purpureum L. var. purpureum found within the city, and appreciation of users was examined within this scope. In this regard, Lamium purpureum L. var. purpureum planting compositions within urban landscape were examined, they were taken into evaluation within 8 different groups (road sides, rock gardens, open green spaces, curves, refuges, emphasis points, retaining walls and slopped (sand dune) lands) according to their characteristics, and the results of soil samples taken from each group were included. Consequently, recommendations intended for contribution of Lamium purpureum L. var. purpureum plant to urban landscape and the usability in sustainable urban green spaces were developed. - Abstract
The aim of this article is to identify the urban biodiversity in the residential landscapes and user preferences in Bartin urban area, located in the Western Black Sea Region, Turkey. The study was conducted in the residential gardens of the traditional urban fabric and the old urban pattern with conservation status at the national level (dwellings in the urban conservation area and registered buildings in the urban development area), and also in the new urban pattern (housing estates and detached houses). 120 residential gardens were selected and 140 plant species belonging to 57 families were identified. The plant species in the first 10 percent of 140 plants according to user preferences are considered in the statistical analyses. The results of the study indicate that the residential landscapes in the old and new urban pattern of Bartin have a considerable potential in terms of biodiversity. While fruit trees and natural plant species characterize the residential gardens in the old urban pattern, exotic plant species are common in the new urban pattern. The users prefer plants in their gardens for their functional use, rather than aes-thetical use. It is further observed that the users in the old urban pattern use the plants as they grow, whereas the users in the new urban pattern use plants obtained from nursery gardens. Analyzing the urban biodiversity inventory in Bartin at the residential garden scale, this study concludes with some suggestions for sustainable urban development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Filyos, which is a coastal town located at the Western Black Sea region of Turkey, in Çaycuma, Zonguldak, has a significant archeological past, and is home of important archeological ruins. Especially during the 4
th and 3rd centuries B.C., Filyos had a strategic role in its region, and today it is classified as a historic site. Beside the ancient city of Filyos which is located at the east side, the town is also important for its city walls, the chapel and ruins of an ancient harbor, all from the Byzantine period. A thorough design process that considers the ecological features of the region, users' demands and the archeological features is crucial for the landscape projects in the town. This study aims to reshape the coastline of Filyos to attract touristic activities and to meet the recreational demands of people, while preserving the archeological and ecological features of the region. In this paper, design principles for the use and organization of Filyos coastline are presented, and a survey is conducted to determine users' demand. In the conclusion section, design stages are prepared and strategies for revitalization on the Filyos coastline are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to identify the distribution of plant species in the urban public green spaces (UPGS's) of the urbanized area of Bartin, Turkey, and relate the make up of the vegetation to how residents perceive the open spaces both visually and in terms of green space sustainability. The study was conducted in 41 sampled areas in 18 green spaces. These UPGS's were in both old and new urban areas, and were distributed throughout the urbanized area of Bartin. The survey found there were 193 plant species from 59 families in the 41 sampled areas. Based on this survey the present comparative study of UPGS's in both older areas and newer development in Bartn (a) presents the plant species as well as their distribution by family and origin, (b) makes correlations between the socio-demographics of survey participants and their definitions of urban UPGS's, (c) evaluates the sustainability of the UPGS's (on the basis of their aesthetic, ecological, and functional properties), and (d) assesses the visual quality of the UPGSs. A questionnaire was given to 350 participants, and the findings were assessed via a correlation analysis. The findings suggested, with a reliability level of 95%, a statistically significant correlation between the socio-demographics of the participants and their preferences in the changing urban texture (p<0.05). It was determined that whereas users find UPGSs in older urban areas to be more beautiful, traditional and attractive than new parks and gardens in recently developed development (r=0,133*) while it was also determined that the plant texture is richer and has sufficient greenery (r=,176**) in older urban areas. The Bartin public found the gardens of religious buildings in older areas to be more ecological with a score of 3.05 whereas the gardens of public buildings in modern developments were found to be more functional with a score of 3.7 and that park areas with old urban texture characteristics and cemetery areas with new urban texture characteristics were found to be more ecological both with scores of 3.5. When the semantic differential method results are evaluated, it was determined that all expert groups found cemetery areas with both new and old urban texture characteristics to be accessible with a ratio of 32 % and traditional with a ratio of 29 %. UPGSs are an essential component of urban green space planning. Therefore, the present paper provides significant data for further studies on planning, designing and managing UPGSs. More specifically, the sustainability of the vegetation in the UPGSs included in the study is essential for urban ecology and urban planning. The paper concludes with recommendations for development of urban biodiversity, quality of human life, and sustainability of the urban landscape in public open spaces in a city, which is growing at a remarkable rate. Research Limitations/Implications Children are faced with increasing parental concerns (abduction, harassment, self-harm, and inability to socialize), attention deficit in children, obesity and depression diseases. Originality/Value These data show that "play" has positive effects on children's health, and provides benefit in exploring children's creativity, sharpening their thinking skills and environmental awareness. Based on the results of the article, suggestions were developed on how designers, planners and park managers can implement the results in order to eliminate parents' fears and increase their motivation to take their children to children's playgrounds.

Traditional settlements, which are important historical, cultural and structural heritages of societies, got further away from their distinctive identities and gained different identities in recent years, as a result of the effect of modernization. Cities are losing their distinctive identities due to the studies that began to gradually be a standard and that cause to formation of uniform cities. For ensuring a city to maintain its distinctive tissue, it is not adequate to protect only the examples of its existing traditional civil architecture. Environmental components that constitute the urban tissue should be dealt with and evaluated as a whole. Gardens, which are the first open places providing the link between houses and external environment, give clues about the worldviews, beliefs, traditions, social orders, ways of making living, and organizations of the communities that they belong to, i.e. cultures of communities as a whole, and their development; and at the same time, they play an important role in enabling a city to take shape and create an identity, by accompanying the architectural models with their great number of domestic and exotic plant species compatible with the city's tissue. Within the scope of this research, five different regions were determined in Bartin's city center, where the traditional residential tissue is intense; and then, the questionnaire study was performed in the house gardens selected in that area with the random sampling method. By means of the evaluation of the questionnaire results, the reflections of the preferences of the dwellers of traditional houses—regarding their gardens as well as their socio-economic characteristics—on their gardens were revealed; and the wood-like plant species in the house gardens shaped based on such specifications were examined. Floristic diversity in traditional house gardens, and how a change this diversity exhibits were determined. In addition, the preferences regarding the floristic diversity found in the house gardens were introduced, according to their use in urban landscape, and their contributions to urban landscape design were emphasized. 144

This dissertation offers to practitioners some information about how Sorbus domestica L.is grown by using generative methods, determination of importance in Landscape Architecture, and how and where this plant can be used as a composition in Landscape Design. As a result of using intensively exotic species rahter than native species, plant diversity remains only in rural landscape. Giving importance to exotic species has brought about the degeneration in urban landscape. Even though our country is rather rich in terms of having plant material, the uniformity is quite common problem because of using more than enough allien species. Therefore, the arrangement of plant sellection is very important in city centre. İn this study, it is shown that how compatable plants can be obtained on account of aesthetic and ecological aspects by considering eligible cost. Generative method has been preferred as a technique due to high cost and requiring much material for steel production. The work which is the subject of a natural type of Western Black Sea Sorbus domestica L. were collected from trees that are grown in nature environment. After keeping the seeds for 4 months in cold athmosphere, it has been planted in 4 different environments with 3 different experimental models. İt can be said that yhe highest germination took place in turf at %82, in turf-river sand at %77, and in forest soil at %45 respectively. In the second phase of the study, 6 different places were chosen as green spaces in the city center of Bartin in order to apply design criteria such as diversity, harmony, contrast, balance and emphasis. For each of the selected field of studies were seperately evaluated considering usage of native and exotic species. With the help of simulation studies which were applied to chosen areas with natural and exotic species, the awareness of the citizens for natural species were tried to be determined by survey. According to the survey, although the citizens have seen the natural species in rural environment, they ignore the allien species and want to see the natural species around it. 116

Anahtar Kelimeler: Akarsu, Su koridoru, Su kullanımı In this thesis, place of river and its tributaries that remain as a natural area, must be protected and are called to as the green way in the landscape design and contribution to people are discussed within increasingly intensive structuring of cities in today's. Water corridors are created by the river and its tributaries contribute to people in many ways. In this context, recreational, aesthetic, therapeutic values of water corridors are discussed and the possibilities of usage are determined in line with the people's needs. Taking into account to all these cases, the creation of places that can respond to daily and weekly needs of people and can contributed to the spiritual healing of people are purposed. In this study, visual analysis evaluating of water corridors that are located in Turkey and have three different usages is performed using the swot analysis and in addition to it, usage possibilities of water corridors are presented using survey. Survey is conducted using photographs of water corridors and 120 city users participated to survey. In interrogations, questions that are examined to recreational, aesthetic and therapeutic aspects of water and its immediate surroundings are directed to users and analysis percentage values of scores given are demonstrated. Evaluation of the usage in the water corridors is determined according to the gender discrimination using t-test and whether there is preference difference is identified using variance analysis. As a result, in accordance with the statistical analysis it is shown that water has an important role in human life regardless of gender discrimination in usage of these areas. According to user reviews it is observed that Porsuk stream is more successful from recreational, aesthetic and therapeutic aspects than Bartın River and Karaçomak stream. In this study, design proposals are developed using the results obtained from all three areas. In these design proposals it is found that water corridors in the urban environment should be arranged without disturbing the natural balance of ecosystems in order to respond to human needs within the scope green way. Keywords: Stream, Water corridor, Water usage 113
