Abstract

The ForMAX beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory provides multiscale and multimodal structural characterization of hierarchical materials in the nm to mm range by combining small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering with full-field microtomography. The modular design of the beamline is optimized for easy switching between different experimental modalities. The beamline has a special focus on the development of novel, fibrous materials from forest resources, but it is also well suited for studies within, e.g., food science and biomedical research., Comment: Accepted for publication in J. 19. Transport in T-shaped ballistic junction

Abstract

We present studies of ballistic transport in three terminal T-shaped junction in a linear and non-linear regime. The floating electrode acts as a scatterer and modifies the conductance in a direct channel (between source and drain electrode). In the low voltage limit, the conductance shows the Wigner threshold effect and the bend resistance. A specific shape of the Wigner singularities can be changed by applied voltage to the floating electrode as well as by a shift of the Fermi level. The system also exhibits filtering properties with current distribution between different modes propagating in the junction. Back action of current flowing in the direct channel on changes of the voltage in the floating electrode is considered in the non-linear regime., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We report low-temperature transport measurements of three-terminal T-shaped device patterned from GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. We demonstrate the mode branching and bend resistance effects predicted by numerical modeling for linear conductance data. We show also that the backscattering at the junction area depends on the wave function parity. We find evidence that in a non-linear transport regime the voltage of floating electrode always increases as a function of push-pull polarization. Such anomalous effect occurs for the symmetric device, provided the applied voltage is less than the Fermi energy in equilibrium.

Abstract

The paper describes experiments with the SND detector at VEPP-2M collider, carried out during the period from October 1995 until June 1997. The total integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb^{-1} was collected in the energy range 2E=0.4-1.4 GeV (MHAD97 experiment), corresponding to 4*10^5 mu^+ mu^- pairs produced. Preliminary results of the 1996 phi-meson experiment (FI96) are presented. The total number of phi-mesons produced is 4*10^6. New data on rare decays of phi and eta (550) mesons, in particular B(phi -> eta gamma) = (1.30+-0.06+-0.07)%, B(phi -> pi^0 pi^0 gamma) = (1.1+-0.2)*10^{-4}, (M_{pi^0 pi^0} > 800 MeV), B(phi -> f^0 gamma) = (4.7+-1.0)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta pi^0 gamma) = (1.3+-0.5)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta' gamma) < 1.7*10^{-4}, B(phi -> 2 pi^0 ) < 6*10^{-4} were obtained., Comment: 49 pages, LaTeX, 31 eps-figures

41. Lab-in-a-van: Rapid SARS-CoV-2 testing response with a mobile laboratory

Abstract

BACKGROUND: High testing rates and rapid contact tracing have been key interventions to control COVID-19 in Victoria, Australia. A mobile laboratory (LabVan), for rapid SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics, was deployed at sites deemed critical by the Victorian State Department of Health as part of the response. We describe the process of design, implementation, and performance benchmarked against a central reference laboratory. METHODS: A BSL2 compliant laboratory, complete with a class II biological safety cabinet, was built within a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Panel Van. Swabs were collected by on-site collection teams, registered using mobile internet-enabled tablets and tested using the Xpert® Xpress SARS-CoV-2 assay. Results were reported remotely via HL7 messaging to Public Health Units. Patients with negative results were automatically notified by mobile telephone text messaging (SMS). FINDINGS: A pilot trial of the LabVan identified a median turnaround time (TAT) from collection to reporting of 1:19 h:mm (IQR 0:18, Range 1:03-18:32) compared to 9:40 h:mm (IQR 8:46, Range 6:51-19:30) for standard processing within the central laboratory. During deployment in nine rural and urban COVID-19 outbreaks the median TAT was 2:18 h:mm (IQR 1:18, Range 0:50-16:52) compared to 19:08 h:mm (IQR 5:49, Range 1:36-58:52) for samples submitted to the central laboratory. No quality control issues were identified in the LabVan. INTERPRETATION: The LabVan is an ISO15189 compliant testing facility fully operationalized for mobile point-of-care testing that significantly reduces TAT for result reporting, facilitating rapid public health actions. Abstract

Fragile X Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) is a syndrome based on expansion of the repeats of CGG triplets. The symptoms include action tremor and cerebellar gait ataxia. Additionally symptomatology of FXTAS may be associated to parkinsonism, executive function deficits, dementia, neuropathy and dysautonomia. We present a case of a patient who after 20 year history of progressive tremor and ataxia, was diagnosed after genetic examination as mutation of FXTAS. For the treatment of tremor the patient underwent Gamma Knife (GK) thalamotomy. Reduced tremor on the right side and improvement in everyday activities were observed in the outcome of the treatment. GK thalamotomy, in the context of this patient, did not significantly affect the ataxia.
