Abstract

Mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM) is crucial for efficient mineral exploration, where prospective zones are identified in a cost-effective manner. This study focuses on generating prospectivity maps for hydrothermal polymetallic mineralization in the Feizabad area, in northeastern Iran, using unsupervised anomaly detection methods, i.e., isolation forest (IForest) and deep isolation forest (DIF) algorithms. As mineralization events are rare and complex, traditional approaches continue to encounter difficulties, despite advances in MPM. In this respect, unsupervised anomaly detection algorithms, which do not rely on ground truth samples, offer a suitable solution. Here, we compile geospatial datasets on the Feizabad area, which is known for its polymetallic mineralization showings. Fourteen evidence layers were created, based on the geology and mineralization characteristics of the area. Both the IForest and DIF algorithms were employed to identify areas with high mineralization potential. The DIF, which uses neural networks to handle non-linear relationships in high-dimensional data, outperformed the traditional decision tree-based IForest algorithm. The results, evaluated through a success rate curve, demonstrated that the DIF provided more accurate prospectivity maps, effectively capturing complex, non-linear relationships. This highlights the DIF algorithm's suitability for MPM, offering significant advantages over the IForest algorithm. The present study concludes that the DIF algorithm, and similar unsupervised anomaly detection algorithms, are highly effective for MPM, making them valuable tools for both brownfield and greenfield exploration. Abstract

Biomass is one of the most versatile sustainable energy sources. This versatility allows utilization of different biomass feedstock using a verity of conversion techniques. Often, a biomass-to-bioenergy conversion method is selected depending on the application, end-use product, and the type of feedstock. In many applications such as residential energy supply, it is possible to select amongst various technologies. Although, there exist several challenges such as cost-effectiveness and sustainability that constrains bioenergy development. To this end, this research elaborates on the impacts of different conversion methods on techno-economic performance of bioenergy systems for residential energy supply. In this context, Organic Rankine Cycle based on direct combustion, and Dual Fluidized-Bed technology based on gasification were selected for that purpose. A techno-economic comparative analysis illustrates that the primary product of the system and fuel cost are the two most important factors in feasibility assessment. The negative impact of feedstock price was more severe on the Organic Rankine Cycle. For wood chips prices below 55$/t, Organic Rankine Cycle could be the better option due to lower capital and maintenance costs. In contrast, Dual Fluidized-Bed could better tolerate the variation of feedstock price; offering 8% lower cost of energy at 65$/t wood chips.

Abstract

In this article, we have processed Landsat-8 spectral bands, ground gravity, and magnetic data for delineating the mafic cumulates within the anorthositic-layered complex in Sittampundi, Tamilnadu, India. In this regard, surface anomaly map of mafic cumulates was derived by processing spectral bands of Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor using matched filtering method. Residual gravity, magnetic anomaly maps are also derived. Spatial position of geophysical anomalies corroborate well with the spectral anomalies. A promising zone of chromitite occurrences is identified at the eastern fringe of the study area based on the concurrence of spectral and geophysical anomalies. Spatial profiles of geophysical and spectral anomalies around this promising zone are similar to the respective spatial profiles observed around the known chromite bearing mafic cumulates. Depth continuity of the mafic cumulates is confirmed by deriving of gravity and magnetic anomaly map at different depth using upward continuation filters to confirm concealed deposit. Abstract

This study deals with the mixed-pixel problem of detecting benthic habitat class membership and evaluates two soft classifiers for coral habitat mapping on Lang Tengah island (Malaysia). A comparison was made between the Bayesian and Dempster–Shafer (D–S) with a traditional maximum likelihood (ML). The heterogeneous pattern of reef environment, established by field observation, four classes of coral habitats containing various combinations of live coral, dead coral with algae, rubble coral and sand. Posterior probability and belief maps, generated by Bayesian and D–S, respectively, were evaluated by visual inspection and final coral habitat distribution maps were validated via accuracy assessment estimates. The accuracy validation tests agreed with the visual inspection of the probability, uncertainty and coral distribution maps. The Bayesian algorithm performed better, with a 34.7–68.5% improvement in accuracy compared to D–S and ML, respectively.
