The Suborbital Imaging Spectrograph for Transition region Irradiance from Nearby Exoplanet host stars (SISTINE) is a rocket-borne ultraviolet (UV) imaging spectrograph designed to probe the radiation environment of nearby stars. SISTINE operates over a bandpass of 98 -- 127 and 130 -- 158 nm, capturing a broad suite of emission lines tracing the full 10$^4$ -- 10$^5$ K formation temperature range critical for reconstructing the full UV radiation field incident on planets orbiting solar-type stars. SISTINE serves as a platform for key technology developments for future ultraviolet observatories. SISTINE operates at moderate resolving power ($R\sim$1500) while providing spectral imaging over an angular extent of $\sim$6', with $\sim$2" resolution at the slit center. The instrument is composed of an f/14 Cassegrain telescope that feeds a 2.1x magnifying spectrograph, utilizing a blazed holographically ruled diffraction grating and a powered fold mirror. Spectra are captured on a large format microchannel plate (MCP) detector consisting of two 113 x 42 mm segments each read out by a cross delay-line anode. Several novel technologies are employed in SISTINE to advance their technical maturity in support of future NASA UV/optical astronomy missions. These include enhanced aluminum lithium fluoride coatings (eLiF), atomic layer deposition (ALD) protective optical coatings, and ALD processed large format MCPs. SISTINE was launched a total of three times with two of the three launches successfully observing targets Procyon A and $\alpha$ Centauri A and B.

The recent discovery of ``ultra-hot'' ($P < 1$ day) Neptunes has come as a surprise: some of these planets have managed to retain gaseous envelopes despite being close enough to their host stars to trigger strong photoevaporation and/or Roche lobe overflow. Here, we investigate atmospheric escape in LTT 9779b, an ultra-hot Neptune with a volatile-rich envelope. We observed two transits of this planet using the newly-commissioned WINERED spectrograph ($R\sim68,000$) on the 6.5 m Clay/Magellan II Telescope, aiming to detect an extended upper atmosphere in the He 10830 A triplet. We found no detectable planetary absorption: in a 0.75 A passband centered on the triplet, we set a 2$\sigma$ upper limit of 0.12% ($\delta R_p/H < 14$) and a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of 0.20% ($\delta R_p/H < 22$). Using a H/He isothermal Parker wind model, we found corresponding 95% and 99.7% upper limits on the planetary mass-loss rate of $\dot{M} < 10^{10.03}$ g s$^{-1}$ and $\dot{M} < 10^{11.11}$ g s$^{-1}$ respectively, smaller than predicted by outflow models even considering the weak stellar XUV emission. The low evaporation rate is plausibly explained by a metal-rich envelope, which would decrease the atmospheric scale height and increase the cooling rate of the outflow. This hypothesis is imminently testable: if metals commonly weaken planetary outflows, then we expect that \textit{JWST} will find high atmospheric metallicities for small planets that have evaded detection in He 10830 A., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The Far- and Lyman-Ultraviolet Imaging Demonstrator (FLUID) is a rocket-borne arcsecond-level ultraviolet (UV) imaging instrument covering four bands between 92 -- 193 nm. FLUID will observe nearby galaxies to find and characterize the most massive stars that are the primary drivers of the chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies, and the co-evolution of the surrounding galactic environment. The FLUID short wave channel is designed to suppress efficiency at Lyman-$\alpha$ (121.6 nm), while enhancing the reflectivity of shorter wavelengths. Utilizing this technology, FLUID will take the first ever images of local galaxies isolated in the Lyman ultraviolet (90 -- 120 nm). As a pathfinder instrument, FLUID will employ and increase the TRL of band-selecting UV coatings, and solar-blind UV detector technologies including microchannel plate and solid state detectors; technologies prioritized in the 2022 NASA Astrophysical Biennial Technology Report. These technologies enable high throughput and high sensitivity observations in the four co-aligned UV imaging bands that make up the FLUID instrument. We present an atmospheric analysis of LTT 9779 b, a rare planet situated in the hot Neptune desert, that has been observed with HST WFC3 G102 and G141. The combined transmission spectrum, which covers 0.8 - 1.6 $\mu$m, shows a gradual increase in transit depth with wavelength. Our preferred atmospheric model shows evidence for H$_{\rm 2}$O, CO$_{\rm 2}$ and FeH with a significance of 3.1 $\sigma$, 2.4 $\sigma$ and 2.1 $\sigma$, respectively. In an attempt to constrain the rate of atmospheric escape for this planet, we search for the 1.083 $\mu$m Helium line in the G102 data but find no evidence of excess absorption that would indicate an escaping atmosphere using this tracer. We refine the orbital ephemerides of LTT 9779 b using our HST data and observations from TESS, searching for evidence of orbital decay or apsidal precession, which is not found. The phase-curve observation of LTT 9779 b with JWST NIRISS should provide deeper insights into the atmosphere of this planet and the expected atmospheric escape might be detected with further observations concentrated on other tracers such as Lyman $\alpha$., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

X-ray through infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are essential for understanding a star's effect on exoplanet atmospheric composition and evolution. We present a catalog of panchromatic SEDs, hosted on the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST), for 11 exoplanet hosting stars which have guaranteed JWST observation time as part of the ERS or GTO programs but have no previous UV characterization. The stars in this survey range from spectral type F4-M6 (0.14-1.57 M$_\odot$), rotation periods of ~4-132 days, and ages of approximately 0.5-11.4 Gyr. The SEDs are composite spectra using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and XMM-Newton, the Hubble Space Telescope, BT-Settl stellar atmosphere models, and scaled spectra of proxy stars of similar spectral type and activity. From our observations, we have measured a set of UV and X-ray fluxes as indicators of stellar activity level. We compare the chromospheric and coronal activity indicators of our exoplanet-hosting stars to the broader population of field stars and find that a majority of our targets have activity levels lower than the average population of cool stars in the solar neighborhood. This suggests that using SEDs of stars selected from exoplanet surveys to compute generic exoplanet atmosphere models may underestimate the typical host star's UV flux by an order of magnitude or more, and consequently, that the observed population of exoplanetary atmospheres receive lower high-energy flux levels than the typical planet in the solar neighborhood., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in AJ

Photochemistry is a fundamental process of planetary atmospheres that regulates the atmospheric composition and stability. However, no unambiguous photochemical products have been detected in exoplanet atmospheres to date. Recent observations from the JWST Transiting Exoplanet Early Release Science Program found a spectral absorption feature at 4.05 $\mu$m arising from SO$_2$ in the atmosphere of WASP-39b. WASP-39b is a 1.27-Jupiter-radii, Saturn-mass (0.28 M$_J$) gas giant exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star with an equilibrium temperature of $\sim$1100 K. The most plausible way of generating SO$_2$ in such an atmosphere is through photochemical processes. Here we show that the SO$_2$ distribution computed by a suite of photochemical models robustly explains the 4.05 $\mu$m spectral feature identified by JWST transmission observations with NIRSpec PRISM (2.7$\sigma$) and G395H (4.5$\sigma$). SO$_2$ is produced by successive oxidation of sulphur radicals freed when hydrogen sulphide (H$_2$S) is destroyed. The sensitivity of the SO$_2$ feature to the enrichment of the atmosphere by heavy elements (metallicity) suggests that it can be used as a tracer of atmospheric properties, with WASP-39b exhibiting an inferred metallicity of $\sim$10$\times$ solar. We present a stacking analysis of 2.61 Msec of archival Chandra observations of stellar wind bow shocks. We place an upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of IR-detected bow shocks of $<2\times10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$, a more stringent constraint than has been found in previous archival studies and dedicated observing campaigns of nearby bow shocks. We compare the X-ray luminosities and $L_X/L_{\rm bol}$ ratios of bow shock driving stars to those of other OB stars within the Chandra field of view. Driving stars are, on average, of later spectral type than the "field of view" OB stars, and we do not observe any unambiguously high $L_X/L_{\rm bol}$ ratios indicative of magnetic stars in our sample. We additionally asses the feasibility of detecting X-rays from stellar wind bow shocks with the proposed Lynx X-ray Observatory. If the X-ray flux originating from the bow shocks is just below our Chandra detection limit, the nearest bow shock in our sample (at $\sim$0.4 kpc with an absorbing column of $\sim10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) should be observable with Lynx in exposure times on the order of $\sim$100 kiloseconds., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; accepted to AJ
