Skeletal dysplasias collectively affect a large number of patients worldwide. The majority of these disorders cause growth anomalies. Hence, assessing skeletal maturity via determining the bone age (BA) is one of the most valuable tools for their diagnoses. Moreover, consecutive BA assessments are crucial for monitoring the pediatric growth of patients with such disorders, especially for timing hormone treatments or orthopedic interventions. However, manual BA assessment is time-consuming and suffers from high intra-and inter-rater variability. This is further exacerbated by genetic disorders causing severe skeletal malformations. While numerous approaches to automatize BA assessment were proposed, few were validated for BA assessment on children with abnormal development. In this work, we present Deeplasia, an open-source prior-free deep-learning ensemble approach. After training on the public RSNA BA dataset, we achieve state-of-the-art performance with a mean absolute difference (MAD) of 3.87 months based on the average of six different reference ratings. Next, we demonstrate that Deeplasia generalizes to an unseen dataset of 568 X-ray images from 189 patients with molecularly confirmed diagnoses of seven different genetic bone disorders (including Achondroplasia and Hypochondroplasia) achieving a MAD of 5.84 months w.r.t. to the average of two references. Further, using longitudinal data from a subset of the cohort (149 images), we estimate the test-retest precision of our model ensemble to be at least at the human expert level (2.74 months). We conclude that Deeplasia suits assessing and monitoring the BA in patients with skeletal dysplasias.

Rare eye diseases such as inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are challenging to diagnose genetically. IRDs are typically monogenic disorders and represent a leading cause of blindness in children and working-age adults worldwide. A growing number are now being targeted in clinical trials, with approved treatments increasingly available. However, access requires a genetic diagnosis to be established sufficiently early. Critically, the timely identification of a genetic cause remains challenging. We demonstrate that a deep-learning algorithm, Eye2Gene, trained on the largest imaging dataset of patients with IRDs currently available, provides expert-level accuracy for genetic diagnosis for the 36 most common molecular causes (top-5 accuracy = 85.6%). This algorithm has been deployed online (app.eye2gene.com) and externally validated on data provided by four different clinical centers. Eye2Gene can facilitate access to diagnostic expertise, only currently available in a limited number of specialist centers globally, and thereby dramatically accelerate the genetic diagnostic odyssey.

Recent observations of the fields surrounding a few Milky Way-like galaxies in the local Universe have become deep enough to enable investigations of the predictions of the standard lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model down to small scales outside the Local Group (LG). Motivated by an observed correlation between the number of dwarf satellites (Nsat) and the bulge-to-total baryonic mass ratios (B/T) of the three main galaxies in the LG, i.e. the Milky Way, Andromeda, and Triangulum (M33), we use published data of three well-studied galaxies outside the LG, namely M81, Centaurus A, and M101, and their confirmed satellites, and we find a strong and significant correlation between Nsat and B/T. This presents itself in contradiction with the hitherto published results from cosmological simulations reporting an absence of a correlation between Nsat and B/T in the ΛCDM model. We conclude that, based on the current data, the Nsat versus B/T correlation is no longer a property confined to only the LG.

Many monogenic disorders cause a characteristic facial morphology. Artificial intelligence can support physicians in recognizing these patterns by associating facial phenotypes with the underlying syndrome through training on thousands of patient photographs. However, this ‘supervised’ approach means that diagnoses are only possible if the disorder was part of the training set. To improve recognition of ultra-rare disorders, we developed GestaltMatcher, an encoder for portraits that is based on a deep convolutional neural network. Photographs of 17,560 patients with 1,115 rare disorders were used to define a Clinical Face Phenotype Space, in which distances between cases define syndromic similarity. Here we show that patients can be matched to others with the same molecular diagnosis even when the disorder was not included in the training set. Together with mutation data, GestaltMatcher could not only accelerate the clinical diagnosis of patients with ultra-rare disorders and facial dysmorphism but also enable the delineation of new phenotypes.

Context. In recent years, a new generation of large-scale imaging surveys have probed wide field regions for the first time around some nearby galaxies in an unprecedentedly low surface-brightness regime (∼28.0-29.0 mag arcsec-2). This provides the chance to discover very faint dwarf satellites by means of systematic visual inspection of these public deep images. Aims. In this paper, we report the first results of a systematic survey of faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the vicinity of the bright late-type spiral galaxy NGC 253 by means of a visual inspection of the images taken by the Dark Energy Survey. Methods. We performed a new NGC 253 satellite search using co-added image cutouts reprocessed in the DESI Legacy image surveys. We used GALFIT software to investigate the photometric and structural properties of three dwarf galaxies. Results. We report the discovery of three new dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the brightest member of the Sculptor filament, the late-type spiral NGC 253, located at a distance of 3.7 Mpc towards Anti-Virgo. We name them Do II, Do III, and Do IV. Assuming they are companions of NGC 253, their total absolute V-magnitudes fall in the -7 to -9 mag range, which is typical for dwarf satellites in the local Universe. The central surface brightness tends to be extremely low for all three discovered dwarfs and falls roughly in the range of 25-26 mag arcsec-2 in g-band. Using known data on distances and velocities of galaxies, we estimate the total virial mass of the NGC 253 group to be 8 × 1011 M⊙ , which gives a virial radius of R200 = 186 kpc and a turn-around radius of 706 kpc. We also discuss the possible existence of a spatially flattened and velocity-correlated satellite system around NGC 253. This large-scale structure is orientated almost edge-on to the line of sight. The possible plane of satellites is only 31 kpc thick with a minor-to-major axis ratio of 0.14. Four out of five galaxies with measured velocities follow a common velocity trend similar to those observed in the planes of satellites around the Andromeda and Centaurus A galaxies. These disorders can be diagnosed more efficiently with the support of computer-aided next-generation phenotyping tools, such as DeepGestalt. These tools have learned to associate facial phenotypes with the underlying syndrome through training on thousands of patient photographs. Therefore, in concert with mutation data, GestaltMatcher could accelerate the clinical diagnosis of patients with ultra-rare disorders and facial dysmorphism, as well as enable the delineation of novel phenotypes.

The nature of circumstellar envelopes (CSE) around Cepheids is still a matter of debate. The physical origin of their infrared (IR) excess could be either a shell of ionized gas, or a dust envelope, or both. This study aims at constraining the geometry and the IR excess of the environment of the long-period Cepheid $\ell$ Car (P=35.5 days) at mid-IR wavelengths to understand its physical nature. We first use photometric observations in various bands and Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopy to constrain the IR excess of $\ell$ Car. Then, we analyze the VLTI/MATISSE measurements at a specific phase of observation, in order to determine the flux contribution, the size and shape of the environment of the star in the L band. We finally test the hypothesis of a shell of ionized gas in order to model the IR excess. We report the first detection in the L band of a centro-symmetric extended emission around l Car, of about 1.7$R_\star$ in FWHM, producing an excess of about 7.0\% in this band. In the N band, there is no clear evidence for dust emission from VLTI/MATISSE correlated flux and Spitzer data. On the other side, the modeled shell of ionized gas implies a more compact CSE ($1.13\pm0.02\,R_\star$) and fainter (IR excess of 1\% in the L band). We provide new evidences for a compact CSE of $\ell$ Car and we demonstrate the capabilities of VLTI/MATISSE for determining common properties of CSEs. While the compact CSE of $\ell$ Car is probably of gaseous nature, the tested model of a shell of ionized gas is not able to simultaneously reproduce the IR excess and the interferometric observations. Further Galactic Cepheids observations with VLTI/MATISSE are necessary for determining the properties of CSEs, which may also depend on both the pulsation period and the evolutionary state of the stars., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The current tension between the direct and the early Universe measurements of the Hubble Constant, $H_0$, requires detailed scrutiny of all the data and methods used in the studies on both sides of the debate. The Cepheids in the type Ia supernova (SNIa) host galaxy NGC 5584 played a key role in the local measurement of $H_0$. The SH0ES project used the observations of this galaxy to derive a relation between Cepheids' periods and ratios of their amplitudes in different optical bands of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and used these relations to analyse the light curves of the Cepheids in around half of the current sample of local SNIa host galaxies. In this work, we present an independent detailed analysis of the Cepheids in NGC 5584. We employ different tools for our photometric analysis and a completely different method for our light curve analysis, and we do not find a systematic difference between our period and mean magnitude measurements compared to those reported by SH0ES. By adopting a period-luminosity relation calibrated by the Cepheids in the Milky Way, we measure a distance modulus $\mu=31.810\pm0.047$ (mag) which is in agreement with $\mu=31.786\pm0.046$ (mag) measured by SH0ES. In addition, the relations we find between periods and amplitude ratios of the Cepheids in NGC 5584 are significantly tighter than those of SH0ES and their potential impact on the direct $H_0$ measurement will be investigated in future studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal on 17-Feb-2021

Context. It has recently been shown that the infrared (IR) emission of Cepheids, constant over the pulsation cycle, might be due to a pulsating shell of ionized gas with a radius of about 15% of that of the star radius, which could be attributed to the chromospheric activity of Cepheids. Aims. The aim of this paper is to investigate the dynamical structure of the chromosphere of Cepheids along the pulsation cycle and to quantify its size. Methods. We present Hα and calcium near-infrared triplet (Ca IR) profile variations using high-resolution spectroscopy with the UVES spectrograph of a sample of 24 Cepheids with a good period coverage from ≈3 to 60 days. After a qualitative analysis of the spectral line profiles, we quantified the Van Hoof effect (velocity gradient between the Hα and Ca IR) as a function of the period of the Cepheids. We then used the Schwarzschild mechanism (a line doubling due to a shock wave) to quantify the size of the chromosphere. Results. We find a significant Van Hoof effect for Cepheids with a period larger than P = 10 days. In particular, Hα lines are delayed with a velocity gradient up to Δv ≈ 30 km s−1 compared to Ca IR. By studying the shocks, we find that the size of the chromosphere of long-period Cepheids is of at least ≈50% of the stellar radius, which is consistent at first order with the size of the shell made of ionized gas previously found from the analysis of IR excess. Last, for most of the long-period Cepheids in the sample, we report a motionless absorption feature in the Hα line that we attribute to a circumstellar envelope that surrounds the chromosphere. Conclusions. Analyzing the Ca IR lines of Cepheids is of importance to potentially unbias the period–luminosity relation from their IR excess, particularly in the context of forthcoming observations of radial velocity measurements from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer on board Gaia, which could be sensitive to their chromosphere.

Context. The infrared (IR) excess of classical Cepheids is seldom studied and poorly understood despite observational evidence and the potential for its contribution to induce systematics on the period-luminosity (PL) relation used in the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. Aims. This study aims to understand the physical origin of the IR excess found in the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 5 Cepheids: RS Pup (P = 41.46d), ζ Gem (P = 10.15d), η Aql (P = 7.18d), V Cen (P = 5.49d) and SU Cyg (P = 3.85d). Methods. A time series of atmospheric models along the pulsation cycle were fitted to a compilation of data, including optical and near-IR photometry, Spitzer spectra (secured at a specific phase), interferometric angular diameters, effective temperature estimates, and radial velocity measurements. Herschel images in two bands were also analyzed qualitatively. In this fitting process, based on the SPIPS algorithm, a residual was found in the SED, whatever the pulsation phase, and for wavelengths larger than about 1.2 μm, which corresponds to the so-determined infrared excess of Cepheids. This IR excess was then corrected from interstellar medium absorption in order to infer the presence (or absence) of dust shells and was, ultimately, used in order to fit a model for a shell of ionized gas. Results. For all Cepheids, we find a continuum IR excess increasing up to approximately −0.1 magnitudes at 30 μm, which cannot be explained by a hot or cold dust model of CircumStellar Environment (CSE). However, a weak but significant dust emission at 9.7 μm is found for ζ Gem, η Aql and RS Pup, while clear interstellar clouds are seen in the Herschel images for V Cen and RS Pup. We show, for the first time, that the IR excess of Cepheids can be explained by free–free emission from a thin shell of ionized gas, with a thickness of ≃15% of the star radius, a mass of 10−9−10−7M⊙ and a temperature ranging between 3500 and 4500 K. Conclusions. The presence of a thin shell of ionized gas around Cepheids must be tested with interferometers operating in the visible or mid-IR, or using radio telescopes. The impact of such CSEs of ionized gas on the PL relation of Cepheids also calls for further investigation.

The ultra-diffuse dwarf galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 (DF2) has ten (eleven) measured globular clusters (GCs) with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of $\sigma=7.8^{+5.2}_{-2.2}\,$km/s ($\sigma=10.6^{+3.9}_{-2.3}\,$km/s). Our conventional statistical analysis of the original ten GCs gives $\sigma=8.0^{+4.3}_{-3.0}\,$km/s. The overall distribution of velocities agrees well with a Gaussian of this width. Due to the non-linear Poisson equation in MOND, a dwarf galaxy has weaker self-gravity when in close proximity to a massive host. This external field effect is investigated using a new analytic formulation and fully self-consistent live $N$-body models in MOND. Our formulation agrees well with that of Famaey and McGaugh (2012). These new simulations confirm our analytic results and suggest that DF2 may be in a deep-freeze state unique to MOND. The correctly calculated MOND velocity dispersion agrees with our inferred dispersion and that of van Dokkum et al. (2018b) if DF2 is within 150 kpc of NGC 1052 and both are 20 Mpc away. The GCs of DF2 are however significantly brighter and larger than normal GCs, a problem which disappears if DF2 is significantly closer to us. A distance of 10-13 Mpc makes DF2 a normal dwarf galaxy even more consistent with MOND and the 13 Mpc distance reported by Trujillo et. al. (2019). We discuss the similar dwarf DF4, finding good agreement with MOND. We also discuss possible massive galaxies near DF2 and DF4 along with their distances and peculiar velocities, noting that NGC 1052 may lie at a distance near 10 Mpc., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

There is a correlation between bulge mass of the three main galaxies of the Local Group (LG), i.e. M31, Milky Way (MW), and M33, and the number of their dwarf spheroidal galaxies. A similar correlation has also been reported for spiral galaxies with comparable luminosities outside the LG. These correlations do not appear to be expected in standard hierarchical galaxy formation. In this contribution, and for the first time, we present a quantitative investigation of the expectations of the standard model of cosmology for this possible relation using a galaxy catalogue based on the Millennium-II simulation. Our main sample consists of disk galaxies at the centers of halos with a range of virial masses similar to M33, MW, and M31. For this sample, we find an average trend (though with very large scatter) similar to the one observed in the LG; disk galaxies in heavier halos on average host heavier bulges and larger number of satellites. In addition, we study sub-samples of disk galaxies with very similar stellar or halo masses (but spanning a range of 2-3 orders of magnitude in bulge mass) and find no obvious trend in the number of satellites vs. bulge mass. We conclude that while for a wide galaxy mass range a relation arises (which seems to be a manifestation of the satellite number - halo mass correlation), for a narrow one there is no relation between number of satellites and bulge mass in the standard model. The Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation is the key tool for measuring astronomical distances and for establishing the extragalactic distance scale. In particular, the local value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) strongly depends on Cepheid distance measurements. The recent Gaia Data Releases and other parallax measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) already enabled to improve the accuracy of the slope ($\alpha$) and intercept ($\beta$) of the PL relation. However, the dependence of this law on metallicity is still largely debated. In this paper, we combine three samples of Cepheids in the Milky Way (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in order to derive the metallicity term (hereafter $\gamma$) of the PL relation. The recent publication of extremely precise LMC and SMC distances based on late-type detached eclipsing binary systems (DEBs) provides a solid anchor for the Magellanic Clouds. In the MW, we adopt Cepheid parallaxes from the early third Gaia Data Release. We derive the metallicity effect in $V$, $I$, $J$, $H$, $K_S$, $W_{VI}$ and $W_{JK}$. In the $K_S$ band we report a metallicity effect of $-0.221 \pm 0.051$ mag/dex, the negative sign meaning that more metal-rich Cepheids are intrinsically brighter than their more metal-poor counterparts of the same pulsation period., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. It is of broad interest for galaxy formation theory to carry out a full inventory of the numbers and properties of dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, both satellites and isolated ones. Ultra-deep imaging in wide areas of the sky with small amateur telescopes can help to complete the census of these hitherto unknown low surface brightness galaxies, which cannot be detected by the current resolved stellar population and HI surveys. We report the discovery of Donatiello I, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy located one degree from the star Mirach (Beta And) in a deep image taken with an amateur telescope. The color--magnitude diagram obtained from follow-up observations obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (La Palma, Spain) reveals that this system is beyond the Local Group and is mainly composed of old stars. The absence of young stars and HI emission in the ALFALFA survey are typical of quenched dwarf galaxies. Our photometry suggests a distance modulus for this galaxy of (m-M)=27.6 +/- 0.2 (3.3 Mpc), although this distance cannot yet be established securely owing to the crowding effects in our color--magnitude diagram. At this distance, Donatiello I's absolute magnitude (M_v =-8.3), surface brightness (mu_v=26.5 mag arcsec^-2) and stellar content are similar to the "classical" Milky Way companions Draco or Ursa Minor. The projected position and distance of Donatiello I are consistent with being a dwarf satellite of the closest S0-type galaxy NGC 404 ("Mirach's Ghost"). Alternatively, it could be one of the most isolated quenched dwarf galaxies reported so far behind the Andromeda galaxy., 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A great challenge in present-day physics is to understand whether the observed internal dynamics of galaxies is due to dark matter matter or due to a modification of the law of gravity. Recently, van Dokkum et al. reported that the ultra-diffuse dwarf galaxy NGC1052-DF2 lacks dark matter, and they claimed that this would -- paradoxically -- be problematic for modified gravity theories like Milgromian dynamics (MOND). In hierarchical models of galaxy formation, stellar tidal streams are expected around most, if not all, galaxies. Although these features may provide useful diagnostics of the $\Lambda$CDM model, their observational properties remain poorly constrained because they are challenging to detect and interpret and have been studied in detail for only a sparse sampling of galaxy population. More quantitative, systematic approaches are required. We advocate statistical analysis of the counts and properties of such features in archival wide-field imaging surveys for a direct comparison against results from numerical simulations. Thus, in this paper we aim to study systematically the frequency of occurrence and other observational properties of tidal features around nearby galaxies. The sample we construct will act as a foundational dataset for statistical comparison with cosmological models of galaxy formation. Our approach is based on a visual classification of diffuse features around a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies, using a post-processing of Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging optimized for the detection of stellar structure with low surface brightness. At a limiting surface brightness of $28\ \mathrm{mag~arcsec^{-2}}$, 14% of the galaxies in our sample exhibit evidence of diffuse features likely to have arisen from minor merging events. Our technique recovers all previously known streams in our sample and yields a number of new candidates. Consistent with previous studies, coherent arc-like features and shells are the most common type of tidal structures found in this study. We conclude that although some detections are ambiguous and could be corroborated or refuted with deeper imaging, our technique provides a reliable foundation for the statistical analysis of diffuse circumgalactic features in wide-area imaging surveys, and for the identification of targets for follow-up studies., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

The connection between the bulge mass or bulge luminosity in disk galaxies and the number, spatial and phase space distribution of associated dwarf galaxies is a discriminator between cosmological simulations related to galaxy formation in cold dark matter and generalized gravity models. Here, a nearby sample of isolated Milky Way class edge-on galaxies is introduced, to facilitate observational campaigns to detect the associated families of dwarf galaxies at low surface brightness. Three galaxy pairs with at least one of the targets being edge-on are also introduced. About 60% of the catalogued isolated galaxies contain bulges of different size, while the remaining objects appear to be bulge-less. Deep images of NGC 3669 (small bulge, with NGC 3625 at the edge of the image) and NGC 7814 (prominent bulge), obtained with a 0.4-m aperture, are also presented, resulting in the discovery of two new dwarf galaxy candidates, NGC3669-DGSAT-3 and NGC7814-DGSAT-7. Eleven additional low surface brightness galaxies are identified, previously notified with low quality measurement flags in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Integrated magnitudes, surface brightnesses, effective radii, Sersic indices, axis ratios, and projected distances to their putative major hosts are displayed. At least one of the galaxies, NGC3625-DGSAT-4, belongs with a surface brightness of approximately 26 mag per arcsec^2 and effective radius >1.5 kpc to the class of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). A central problem of contemporary physics is whether the law of gravity is non-Newtonian on galaxy scales. Rodrigues et al. argue that Milgromian gravitation, which solves the flat rotation curve problem without the need for dark matter particles, is ruled out at > 10{\sigma} significance. To a large extent, this conclusion relies on galaxies with very uncertain distances and/or nearly edge-on orientations, where dust obscuration often becomes significant. (Abridged) Any viable cosmological model in which galaxies interact predicts the existence of primordial and tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). In particular, in the standard model of cosmology ($\Lambda$CDM), according to the dual dwarf galaxy theorem, there must exist both primordial dark matter-dominated and dark matter-free TDGs with different radii. We study the frequency, evolution, and properties of TDGs in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We use the hydrodynamical cosmological Illustris-1 simulation to identify tidal dwarf galaxy candidates (TDGCs) and study their present-day physical properties. We also present movies on the formation of a few galaxies lacking dark matter, confirming their tidal dwarf nature. TDGCs can however also be formed via other mechanisms, such as from ram-pressure-stripped material or, speculatively, from cold-accreted gas. We find 97 TDGCs with $M_{stellar} >5 \times 10^7 M_\odot$ at redshift $z = 0$, corresponding to a co-moving number density of $2.3 \times 10^{-4} h^3 cMpc^{-3}$. The most massive TDGC has $M_{total} = 3.1 \times 10^9 M_\odot$, comparable to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud. TDGCs are phase-space-correlated, reach high metallicities, and are typically younger than dark matter-rich dwarf galaxies. We report for the first time the verification of the dual dwarf theorem in a self-consistent $\Lambda$CDM cosmological simulation. Simulated TDGCs and dark matter-dominated galaxies populate different regions in the radius-mass diagram in disagreement with observations of early-type galaxies. The dark matter-poor galaxies formed in Illustris-1 have comparable radii to observed dwarf galaxies and to TDGs formed in other galaxy-encounter simulations. In Illustris-1, only 0.17% of all selected galaxies with $M_{stellar} = 5 \times 10^7-10^9 M_\odot$ are TDGCs or dark matter-poor dwarf galaxies. We present a method to test the isotropy of the magnitude-redshift relation of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and single out the most discrepant direction (in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio) with respect to the all-sky data. Our technique accounts for possible directional variations of the corrections for SNe Ia and yields all-sky maps of the best-fit cosmological parameters with arbitrary angular resolution. To show its potential, we apply our method to the recent Union2.1 compilation, building maps with three different angular resolutions. We use a Monte Carlo method to estimate the statistical significance with which we could reject the null hypothesis that the magnitude-redshift relation is isotropic based on the properties of the observed most discrepant directions. We find that, based on pure signal-to-noise arguments, the null hypothesis cannot be rejected at any meaningful confidence level. However, if we also consider that the strongest deviations in the Union2.1 sample closely align with the dipole temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background, we find that the null hypothesis should be rejected at the $95-99$ per cent confidence level, slightly depending on the angular resolution of the study. If this result is not due to a statistical fluke, it might either indicate that the SN data have not been cleaned from all possible systematics or even point towards new physics. We present the first study of the isotropy of the distribution of morphological types of galaxies in the Local Universe out to around 200 Mpc using more than 60,000 galaxies from the HyperLeda database. We divide the sky into two opposite hemispheres and compare the abundance distribution of the morphological types, $T$, using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test. This is repeated for different directions in the sky and the KS statistic as a function of sky coordinates is obtained. For three samples of galaxies within around 100, 150, and 200 Mpc, we find a significant hemispherical asymmetry with a vanishingly small chance of occurring in an isotropic distribution. Astonishingly, regardless of this extreme significance, the hemispherical asymmetry is aligned with the Celestial Equator at the 97.1-99.8% and with the Ecliptic at the 94.6-97.6% confidence levels, estimated using a Monte Carlo analysis. Shifting $T$ values randomly within their uncertainties has a negligible effect on this result. When a magnitude limit of $B\leq 15$ mag is applied, the sample within 100 Mpc shows no significant anisotropy after random shifting of $T$. However, the direction of the asymmetry in the samples within 150 and 200 Mpc and $B\leq 15$ mag is found to be within an angular separation of 32 degrees from $(l,b)=(123.7, 24.6)$ with 97.2% and 99.9% confidence levels, respectively. This direction is only 2.6 degrees away from the Celestial North Pole. Unless the Local Universe has a significant anisotropic distribution of galaxy types aligned with the orientation or the orbit of the Earth (which would be a challenge for the Cosmological Principle), our results show that there seems to be a systematic bias in the classification of galaxy morphological types between the data from the Northern and the Southern Equatorial sky. In this paper the characteristic matrix method is used to study the propagation of electromagnetic waves through one-dimensional lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index material layers with symmetric and asymmetric geometric structures with a defect layer at the center of the structure. First, the positive index material defect layer is considered, and the effects of the polarization and the angle of incidence on the defect mode in the transmission spectra of the both structures are investigated. The results show that the number of the defect modes in the transmission spectra depends on the geometry (symmetric or asymmetric) of the structure. In addition, it is shown that the defect mode frequency increases as the angle of incidence increases. This property is independent of the geometry of the structure. Then, for normal incidence, the negative index material defect layer is considered, and the properties of defect modes for both structures are investigated. We examine the two-point correlation function of local maxima in temperature fluctuations at the last scattering surface when this stochastic field is modified by the additional fluctuations produced by straight cosmic strings via the Kaiser-Stebbins effect. We demonstrate that one can detect the imprint of cosmic strings with tension $G\mu \gtrsim 1.2 \times 10^{-8}$ on noiseless $1^\prime$ resolution cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps at 95% confidence interval. Including the effects of foregrounds and anticipated systematic errors increases the lower bound to $G\mu \gtrsim 9.0\times 10^{-8}$ at $2\sigma$ confidence level. Smearing by beams of order 4' degrades the bound further to $G\mu \gtrsim 1.6 \times 10^{-7}$. Our results indicate that two-point statistics are more powerful than 1-point statistics (e.g. number counts) for identifying the non-Gaussianity in the CMB due to straight cosmic strings., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures and 1 table; V2: Added one figure, comments, references and moderate corrections. Context: We introduce the Dwarf Galaxy Survey with Amateur Telescopes (DGSAT) project and report the discovery of eleven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the fields of the nearby galaxies NGC 2683, NGC 3628, NGC 4594 (M104), NGC 4631, NGC 5457 (M101), and NGC 7814. Aims: The DGSAT project aims to use the potential of small-sized telescopes to probe LSB features around large galaxies and to increase the sample size of the dwarf satellite galaxies in the Local Volume. Methods: Using long exposure images, fields of the target spiral galaxies are explored for extended low surface brightness objects. After identifying dwarf galaxy candidates, their observed properties are extracted by fitting models to their light profiles. Results: We find three, one, three, one, one, and two new LSB galaxies in the fields of NGC 2683, 3628, 4594, 4631, 5457, and 7814, respectively. In addition to the newly found galaxies, we analyse the structural properties of nine already known galaxies. All of these 20 dwarf galaxy candidates have effective surface brightnesses in the range $25.3\lesssim\mu_{e}\lesssim28.8$ mag.arcsec$^{-2}$ and are fit with Sersic profiles with indices $n\lesssim 1$. Assuming that they are in the vicinity of the above mentioned massive galaxies, their $r$-band absolute magnitudes, their effective radii, and their luminosities are in the ranges $-15.6 \lesssim M_r \lesssim -7.8$, 160 pc $\lesssim R_e \lesssim$ 4.1 kpc, and $0.1\times 10^6 \lesssim\left(\frac{L}{L_{\odot}}\right)_r\lesssim127 \times 10^6$, respectively. To determine whether these LSB galaxies are indeed satellites of the above mentioned massive galaxies, their distances need to be determined via further observations. Photometric observations of the over-contact binary ER ORI were performed during November 2007 and February to April 2008 with the 51 cm telescope of Biruni Observatory of Shiraz University in U, B and V filters (Johnson system) and an RCA 4509 photomultiplier. We used these data to obtain the light curves and calculate the newtimes of minimum light in each filter and plot the O-C diagram of ER ORI. Using theWilson's computer code with the help of an auxiliary computer program to improve the optimizations, the light curve analyses were carried out to find out the photometric elements of the system. © 2010 Indian Academy of Sciences.

Accurate radial velocities ($v_{\rm rad}$) of Cepheids are mandatory within the context of distance measurements via the Baade-Wesselink technique. The most common $v_{\rm rad}$ derivation method consists in cross-correlating the observed spectrum with a binary template and measuring a velocity on the resulting profile. Yet for Cepheids, the spectral lines selected within the template as well as the way of fitting the cross-correlation function (CCF) have a significant impact on the measured $v_{\rm rad}$. We detail the steps to compute consistent Cepheid CCFs and $v_{\rm rad}$, and we characterise the impact of Cepheid spectral properties and $v_{\rm rad}$ computation method on the resulting line profiles. We collected more than 3900 high-resolution spectra from seven different spectrographs of 64 classical Cepheids. These spectra were standardised through a single process on pre-defined wavelength ranges. We built six correlation templates selecting un-blended lines of different depths from a synthetic Cepheid spectrum, on three different wavelength ranges from 390 to 800 nm. Each spectrum was cross-correlated with these templates to build the corresponding CCFs. We derived a set of line profile observables as well as three different $v_{\rm rad}$ measurements from each CCF. This study confirms that both the template wavelength range, its mean line depth and width, and the $v_{\rm rad}$ computation method significantly impact the $v_{\rm rad}$. Deriving more robust Cepheid $v_{\rm rad}$ time series require to minimise the asymmetry of the line profile and its impact on the $v_{\rm rad}$. Centroid $v_{\rm rad}$, that exhibit slightly smaller amplitudes but significantly smaller scatter than Gaussian or biGaussian $v_{\rm rad}$, should thus be favoured.
