Abstract

This thesis examines the significance of dress in literary constructions of gendered, especially female, diasporic identities and examines patterns of dressing as strategies that allow for engagement with a grander narrative that takes into consideration history and politics, mapped through changes in dress, during and post colonisation. The thesis is primarily concerned with the metaphorical uses of dress in literary, political and cultural discourses. More broadly, the thesis is concerned with how shifts in style, as presented in literature, reflect and inform transitions in social structures in South Asia, and its diasporic communities, in the aftermath of colonialism and in the contemporary context of transnationalism. Writers examined span the colonial period to the twenty-first century and are drawn from a broad geographical range; their texts inform an understanding of dressing patterns as politically, socially and historically constructed across time, geography and literature. I first establish a theoretical framework with which to explore the contexts for modes of dressing and their literary and cultural representation. Chapter one provides a history of South Asian dress to illustrate how the notion of cultural authenticity is problematised through an understanding of centuries of exchange and the hybrid forms of colonial encounters. In subsequent chapters, I examine the work of Santha Rama Rau, in particular her memoir Home to India (1945), and the dilemma in articulating Indian identity. Attia Hosain's Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961) reveals an emerging, modernist feminism at the juncture of Indian independence. Chapters four and five focus on diasporic communities in Monica Ali's Brick Lane (2003) and Nadeem Aslam's Maps for Lost Lovers (2004) and representations of conflict, identity and dress. Finally, Kamila Shamsie's novels are considered in chapter six as contributions to a world literature that attempts to transcend the enduring colonial legacy of constructed and debilitating nationalisms.

Abstract

UnlabelledDisability after childhood diarrhea is an important burden on global productivity. Recent studies suggest that gut bacterial communities influence how humans recover from infectious diarrhea, but we still lack extensive data and mechanistic hypotheses for how these bacterial communities respond to diarrheal disease and its treatment. Here, we report that after Vibrio cholerae infection, the human gut microbiota undergoes an orderly and reproducible succession that features transient reversals in relative levels of enteric Bacteroides and Prevotella. Elements of this succession may be a common feature in microbiota recovery from acute secretory diarrhea, as we observed similar successional dynamics after enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection. Our metagenomic analyses suggest that multiple mechanisms drive microbial succession after cholera, including bacterial dispersal properties, changing enteric oxygen and carbohydrate levels, and phage dynamics. Thus, gut microbiota recovery after cholera may be predictable at the level of community structure but is driven by a complex set of temporally varying ecological processes. Our findings suggest opportunities for diagnostics and therapies targeting the gut microbiota in humans recovering from infectious diarrhea.ImportanceDisability after diarrhea is a major burden on public health in the developing world. Gut bacteria may affect this recovery, but it remains incompletely understood how resident microbes in the digestive tract respond to diarrheal illness. Here, we observed an orderly and reproducible succession of gut bacterial groups after cholera in humans. Genomic analyses associated the succession with bacterial dispersal in food, an altered microbial environment, and changing phage levels. Our findings suggest that it may one day be feasible to manage resident bacterial populations in the gut after infectious diarrhea.

17. Synthesis and characterisation of Mn³⁺ condensed phosphate phases and Fe³⁺ substituted analogues

Abstract

This thesis describes the synthesis, properties and structural characterisation of a series of Mn\(_3\)\(_+\) condensed phosphate phases and Fe\(_3\)\(_+\) substituted analogues. To date, the synthesis of such mixed cation compositions has been unexplored, but this work has highlighted that they present an interesting array of properties. α-NH\(_4\)MnP\(_2\)O\(_7\) was successfully synthesised and structurally characterised. A second polymorph β-NH\(_4\)MnP\(_2\)O\(_7\) was also identified, with both found to be key components of a commerical manganese violet pigment. The α-NH\(_4\)Mn\(_x\)Fe\(_1\)\(_-\)\(_x\)P\(_2\)O\(_7\) solid solution was also characterised, with the introduction of Fe\(_3\)\(_+\) resulting in a distinct colour change, an improvement in thermal stability and a change in the magnetic properties of these materials. Similar changes were seen in the RbMn\(_x\)Fe\(_1\)\(_-\)\(_x\)P\(_2\)O\(_7\) system but a marked improvement in thermal stability, with an unusual decomposition mechanism involving manganese expulsion observed for the intermediate members. Analogous studies were performed on compounds of composition RbMn\(_x\)Fe\(_1\)\(_-\)\(_x\)HP\(_3\)O\(_1\)\(_0\), Mn\(_x\)Fe\(_1\)\(_-\)\(_x\)H\(_2\)P\(_3\)O\(_1\)\(_0\) (x ≤ 0.5), Mn\(_x\)Fe\(_1\)\(_-\)\(_x\)P\(_3\)O\(9\) (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 and 0.75 ≤ x ≤ 1) and β-HMnP\(_2\)O\(_7\). All phases showed interesting colourations which has been attributed to the Jahn-Teller active Mn\(_3\)\(_+\) being able to exhibit a “plastic” coordination sphere. The magnetic structures of a number of compounds have also been solved in order to supplement the existing literature on condensed phosphate systems. The layered compound MnH\(_2\)P\(_3\)O\(_1\)\(_0\)·2H\(_2\)O was also investigated and found to readily undergo monoamine intercalation. Attempts to incorporate additional transition metal ions into the interlayer region of this compound proved inconclusive.

Abstract

The genetic relatedness of Vibrio cholerae O1/O139 isolates obtained from 100 patients and 146 of their household contacts in Dhaka, Bangladesh, between 2002 and 2005 was assessed by multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis. Isolate genotypes were analyzed at five loci containing tandem repeats. Across the population, as well as within households, isolates with identical genotypes were clustered in time. Isolates from individuals within the same household were more likely to have similar or identical genotypes than were isolates from different households, but even within a household, isolates from different individuals often had different genotypes. When household contacts were sampled regularly for 3 weeks after the illness of the household index patient, isolates with genotypes related to the index patient appeared in contacts, on average, ~3 clays after the index patient, while isolates with unrelated genotypes appeared in contacts ~6 days after. Limited data revealed that multiple isolates from the same individual collected within days of each other or even from a single stool sample may have identical, similar, or unrelated genotypes as well. Our results demonstrate that genetically related V. cholerae strains cluster in local outbreaks but also suggest that multiple distinct strains of V. cholerae O1 may circulate simultaneously within a household. doi: 10.1128/JB.00698-10

Abstract

Information is limited on the effect of zinc on immune responses in children with diarrhea due to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coil (ETEC), the most common bacterial pathogen in children. We studied the immunological effect of zinc treatment (20 mg/d) and supplementation (10 mg/d)in children with diarrhea due to ETEC. A total of 148 children aged 6-24 mo were followed up for 9 mo after a 10-d zinc treatment (ZT; n = 74) or a 10-d zinc treatment plus 3-mo supplementation (ZT+S; n = 74), as well as 50 children with ETEC-induced diarrhea that were not treated with zinc (UT). Fifty control children (HC) of the same age group from the same location were also studied. Serum zinc concentrations were higher in both the ZT (P < 0.001) and ZT+S groups (P < 0.001) than in the UT group but did not differ from the HC group. We found higher serum complement C3 immediately after zinc administration in both ZT (P < 0.001 ) and ZT+S (P < 0.001) groups than in the UT group. Phagocytic activity in children in both ZT (P < 0.01 ) and ZT+S (P < 0.01 ) groups was greater than in the UT group. However, oxidative burst capacity was lower in zinc-receiving groups (ZT, P < 0.001 and ZT+S, P < 0.001) than in the UT group. The naive:memory T cell ratio in both ZT (P < 0.05) and ZT+S (P < 0.01) groups was higher than in the UT group from d 2 to 15.
