Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) observations of supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate PKS~2131$-$021 revealed, for the first time, six likely characteristics of the phenomenology exhibited by SMBHB in blazars, of which the most unexpected and critical is sinusoidal flux density variations. We have now identified a second blazar, PKS~J0805$-$0111, showing significant sinusoidal variations, with an observed period that translates to $1.422 \pm 0.005$ yr in the rest frame of the $z = 1.388$ object. We generate $10^6$ simulated light curves to reproduce the radio variability characteristics of PKS~J0805$-$0111, and show that the global probability, considering the \textit{look-elsewhere effect}, indicates that the observed periodicity can be attributed to the red noise tail of the power spectral density, with a $p_0$ value of $7.8 \times 10^{-5}$ (i.e. 3.78$\sigma$). PKS J0805$-$0111 displays all six characteristics observed in PKS 2131$-$021. Taking into account the well-defined OVRO sample size, the false positive probability $\sim 0.22$, but the rare behavior makes this a strong SMBHB candidate. The discovery of a second SMBHB candidate exhibiting these rare characteristics reveals that PKS~2131$-$021 is not a unique, isolated case. With these two strong cases we are clearly seeing only the tip of the iceberg. We estimate that the number of SMBHB candidates amongst blazars $\sim$ 1 in 100.

Relativistic magnetic reconnection is a powerful agent through which magnetic energy can be tapped in astrophysics, energizing particles that then produce observed radiation. In some systems, the highest energy photons come from particles Comptonizing an ambient radiation bath supplied by an external source. If the emitting particle energies are high enough, this inverse Compton (IC) scattering enters the Klein-Nishina regime, which differs from the low-energy Thomson IC limit in two significant ways. First, radiative losses become inherently discrete, with particles delivering an order-unity fraction of their energies to single photons. Second, Comptonized photons may pair-produce with the ambient radiation, opening up another channel for radiative feedback on magnetic reconnection. We analytically study externally illuminated highly magnetized reconnecting systems for which both of these effects are important. We identify a universal (initial magnetization-independent) quasi-steady state in which gamma-rays emitted from the reconnection layer are absorbed in the upstream region, and the resulting hot pairs dominate the energy density of the inflow plasma. However, a true pair cascade is unlikely, and the number density of created pairs remains subdominant to that of the original plasma for a wide parameter range. Rapid gamma-ray flares pose an astrophysical puzzle, requiring mechanisms both to accelerate energetic particles and to produce fast observed variability. These dual requirements may be satisfied by collisionless relativistic magnetic reconnection. On the one hand, relativistic reconnection can energize gamma-ray emitting electrons. On the other, as previous kinetic simulations have shown, the reconnection acceleration mechanism preferentially focuses high-energy particles -- and their emitted photons -- into beams, which may create rapid blips in flux as they cross a telescope's line of sight. Using a series of 2D pair-plasma particle-in-cell simulations, we explicitly demonstrate the critical role played by radiative cooling in mediating the observable signatures of this `kinetic beaming' effect. Only in our efficiently cooled simulations do we measure kinetic beaming beyond one light crossing time of the reconnection layer. We find a correlation between the cooling strength and the photon energy range across which persistent kinetic beaming occurs: stronger cooling coincides with a wider range of beamed photon energies. We also apply our results to rapid gamma-ray flares in flat-spectrum radio quasars, suggesting that a paradigm of radiatively efficient kinetic beaming constrains relevant emission models. Magnetic reconnection in relativistic collisionless plasmas can accelerate particles and power high-energy emission in various astrophysical systems. Whereas most previous studies focused on relativistic reconnection in pair plasmas, less attention has been paid to electron-ion plasma reconnection, expected in black hole accretion flows and relativistic jets. We report a comprehensive particle-in-cell numerical investigation of reconnection in an electron-ion plasma, spanning a wide range of ambient ion magnetizations $\sigma_i$, from the semirelativistic regime (ultrarelativistic electrons but nonrelativistic ions, 0.001<<$\sigma_i$<<1) to the fully relativistic regime (both species are ultrarelativistic, $\sigma_i$>>1). We investigate how the reconnection rate, electron and ion plasma flows, electric and magnetic field structures, electron/ion energy partitioning, and nonthermal particle acceleration depend on $\sigma_i$. Our key findings are: (1) the reconnection rate is about 0.1 of the Alfvenic rate across all regimes; (2) electrons can form concentrated moderately relativistic outflows even in the semirelativistic, small-$\sigma_i$ regime; (3) while the released magnetic energy is partitioned equally between electrons and ions in the ultrarelativistic limit, the electron energy fraction declines gradually with decreased $\sigma_i$ and asymptotes to about 0.25 in the semirelativistic regime; (4) reconnection leads to efficient nonthermal electron acceleration with a $\sigma_i$-dependent power-law index, $p(\sigma_i) \simeq $const$+0.7 {\sigma_i}^{-1/2}$. We have investigated the complex multiwavelength evolution of GRO J1655-40 during the rise of its 2005 outburst. We detected two hard X-ray flares, the first one during the transition from the soft state to the ultra-soft state, and the second one in the ultra-soft state. The first X-ray flare coincided with an optically thin radio flare. We also observed a hint of increased radio emission during the second X-ray flare. To explain the hard flares without invoking a secondary emission component, we fit the entire data set with the eqpair model. This single, hybrid Comptonization model sufficiently fits the data even during the hard X-ray flares if we allow reflection fractions greater than unity. In this case, the hard X-ray flares correspond to a Comptonizing corona dominated by non-thermal electrons. The fits also require absorption features in the soft and ultra-soft state which are likely due to a wind. In this work we show that the wind and the optically thin radio flare co-exist. Finally, we have also investigated the radio to optical spectral energy distribution, tracking the radio spectral evolution through the quenching of the compact jet and rise of the optically thin flare, and interpreted all data using state transition models., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we characterize the energy spectra of particles accelerated by relativistic magnetic reconnection (without guide field) in collisionless electron-positron plasmas, for a wide range of upstream magnetizations $\sigma$ and system sizes $L$. The particle spectra are well-represented by a power law $\gamma^{-\alpha}$, with a combination of exponential and super-exponential high-energy cutoffs, proportional to $\sigma$ and $L$, respectively. [abridged] Here we present the analysis of multifrequency data gathered for the FRII radio galaxy PKS B1358-113, hosted in the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 1836. The galaxy harbors one of the most massive black holes known to date and our analysis of the optical data reveals that this black hole is only weakly active. Based on new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations and archival radio data we derive the preferred range for the jet kinetic luminosity $\sim (0.5-3) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This is above the values implied by various scaling relations proposed for radio sources in galaxy clusters, being instead very close to the maximum jet power allowed for the given accretion rate. We constrain the radio source lifetime as $\sim 40-70$ Myrs, and the total amount of deposited jet energy $\sim (2-8) \times 10^{60}$\,ergs. The detailed analysis of the X-ray data provides indication for the presence of a bow-shock driven by the expanding radio lobes into the Abell 1836 cluster environment, with the corresponding Mach number $\sim 2-4$. This, together with the recently growing evidence that powerful FRII radio galaxies may not be uncommon in the centers of clusters at higher redshifts, supports the idea that jet-induced shock heating may indeed play an important role in shaping the properties of clusters, galaxy groups, and galaxies in formation. We speculate on a possible bias against detecting jet-driven shocks in poorer environments, resulting from an inefficient electron heating at the shock front, combined with a relatively long electron-ion equilibration timescale., Comment: Version accepted to ApJ

We present the results of a set of numerical simulations of long-duration gamma-ray burst jets associated with massive, compact stellar progenitors. The simulations extend to large radii and allow us to locate the region in which the peak frequency of the advected radiation is set before the radiation is released at the photosphere. Light curves and spectra are calculated for different viewing angles as well as different progenitor structures and jet properties. We find that the radiation released at the photosphere of matter-dominated jets is able to reproduce the observed Amati and energy-Lorentz factor correlations. High resolution spectra of Galactic Black Holes (GBH) reveal the presence of highly ionised absorbers. In one GBH, accreting close to the Eddington limit for more than a decade, a powerful accretion disc wind is observed to be present in softer X-ray states and it has been suggested that it can carry away enough mass and energy to quench the radio jet. Here we report that these winds, which may have mass outflow rates of the order of the inner accretion rate or higher, are an ubiquitous component of the jet-free soft states of all GBH. We furthermore demonstrate that these winds have an equatorial geometry with opening angles of few tens of degrees, and so are only observed in sources in which the disc is inclined at a large angle to the line of sight. The decrease in Fe XXV / Fe XXVI line ratio with Compton temperature, observed in the soft state, suggests a link between higher wind ionisation and harder spectral shapes. Although the physical interaction between the wind, accretion flow and jet is still not fully understood, the mass flux and power of these winds, and their presence ubiquitously during the soft X-ray states suggests they are fundamental components of the accretion phenomenon., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We discuss strong gravitational lensing of gravitational waves from merging of massive black hole binaries in the context of the LISA mission. Detection of multiple events would provide invaluable information on competing theories of gravity, evolution and formation of structures and, with complementary observations, constraints on H_0 and other cosmological parameters. Most of the optical depth for lensing is provided by intervening massive galactic halos, for which wave optics effects are negligible. Probabilities to observe multiple events are sizable for a broad range of formation histories. For the most optimistic models, up to 4 multiple events with a signal to noise ratio >= 8 are expected in a 5-year mission. Chances are significant even for conservative models with either light (<= 60%) or heavy (<= 40%) seeds. In a dynamical-radiative model we recently developed to describe the physics of compact, GHz-Peaked-Spectrum (GPS) sources, the relativistic jets propagate across the inner, kpc-sized region of the host galaxy, while the electron population of the expanding lobes evolves and emits synchrotron and inverse-Compton (IC) radiation. Interstellar-medium gas clouds engulfed by the expanding lobes, and photoionized by the active nucleus, are responsible for the radio spectral turnover through free-free absorption (FFA) of the synchrotron photons. The model provides a description of the evolution of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of GPS sources with their expansion, predicting significant and complex high-energy emission, from the X-ray to the gamma-ray frequency domain. Here, we test this model with the broad-band SEDs of a sample of eleven X-ray emitting GPS galaxies with Compact-Symmetric-Object (CSO) morphology, and show that: (i) the shape of the radio continuum at frequencies lower than the spectral turnover is indeed well accounted for by the FFA mechanism; (ii) the observed X-ray spectra can be interpreted as non-thermal radiation produced via IC scattering of the local radiation fields off the lobe particles, providing a viable alternative to the thermal, accretion-disk dominated scenario. We also show that the relation between the hydrogen column densities derived from the X-ray (N_H) and radio (N_HI) data of the sources is suggestive of a positive correlation, which, if confirmed by future observations, would provide further support to our scenario of high-energy emitting lobes., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables; to appear in ApJ. The study of the broad-band emission of GHz-Peaked-Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies is a powerful tool to investigate the physical processes taking place in the central, kpc-sized region of their active hosts, where the jets propagate and the lobes expand, interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). We recently developed a new dynamical-radiative model to describe the evolution of the GPS phenomenon (Stawarz et al. 2008): as the relativistic jets propagate through the ISM, gradually engulfing narrow-line emitting gas clouds along their way, the electron population of the expanding lobes evolves, emitting synchrotron light, as well as inverse-Compton radiation via up-scattering of the photon fields from the host galaxy and its active nucleus. The model, which successfully reproduces the key features of the GPS radio sources as a class, provides a description of the evolution of their spectral energy distribution (SED) with the lobes' expansion, predicting significant and complex X-ray to gamma-ray emission. We apply here the model to the broad-band SED's of a sample of known, X-ray emitting GPS galaxies, and show that: (i) the free-free absorption mechanism enables us to reproduce the radio continuum at frequencies below the turnover; (ii) the lobes' non-thermal, inverse-Compton emission can account for the observed X-ray spectra, providing a viable alternative to the thermal, accretion-dominated scenario. [ABRIDGED] We study supermassive black hole binary mergers driven by angular momentum loss to small-scale gas discs. Such binaries form after major galaxy mergers, but their fate is unclear since hardening through stellar scattering becomes very inefficient at sub-parsec distances. Gas discs may dominate binary dynamics on these scales, and promote mergers. Using numerical simulations, we investigate the evolution of the orbits of binaries embedded within geometrically thin gas discs. Our simulations directly resolve angular momentum transport within the disc, which at the radii of interest is likely dominated by disc self-gravity. We show that the binary decays at a rate which is in good agreement with analytical estimates, while the eccentricity grows. Saturation of eccentricity growth is not observed up to values e > 0.35. Accretion onto the black holes is variable, and is roughly modulated by the binary orbital frequency. Scaling our results, we analytically estimate the maximum rate of binary decay that is possible without fragmentation occuring within the surrounding gas disc, and compare that rate to an estimate of the stellar dynamical hardening rate. For binary masses in the range 10^5 < M/Msun < 10^8 we find that decay due to gas discs may dominate for separations below a ~ 0.01--0.1 pc, where the disc is optically thick. The minimum merger time scale is shorter than the Hubble time for M < 10^7 Msun. This implies that gas discs could commonly attend relatively low mass black hole mergers, and that a significant population of binaries might exist at separations of a few hundredths of a pc, where the combined decay rate is slowest. For more massive binaries, we suggest that scattering of stars formed within a fragmenting gas disc could act as a significant additional sink of binary angular momentum., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Here we discuss evolution and broad-band emission of compact (< kpc) lobes in young radio sources. We propose a simple dynamical description for these objects, consisting of a relativistic jet propagating into a uniform gaseous medium in the central parts of an elliptical host. In the framework of the proposed model, we follow the evolution of ultrarelativistic electrons injected from a terminal hotspot of a jet to expanding lobes, taking into account their adiabatic energy losses as well as radiative cooling. This allows us to discuss the broad-band lobe emission of young radio sources. In particular, we argue that the observed spectral turnover in the radio synchrotron spectra of these objects cannot originate from the synchrotron self-absorption process but is most likely due to free-free absorption effects connected with neutral clouds of interstellar medium engulfed by the expanding lobes and photoionized by active centers. We also find a relatively strong and complex high-energy emission component produced by inverse-Compton up-scattering of various surrounding photon fields by the lobes' electrons. We argue that such high energy radiation is strong enough to account for several observed properties of GHz-peaked-spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies at UV and X-ray frequencies. In addition, this emission is expected to extend up to GeV (or possibly even TeV) photon energies and can thus be probed by several modern gamma-ray instruments. We consider the effects of eccentricity on the fragmentation of gravitationally unstable accretion disks, using numerical hydrodynamics. We find that eccentricity does not affect the overall stability of the disk against fragmentation, but significantly alters the manner in which such fragments accrete gas. Variable tidal forces around an eccentric orbit slow the accretion process, and suppress the formation of weakly-bound clumps. The "stellar" mass function resulting from the fragmentation of an eccentric disk is found to have a significantly higher characteristic mass than that from a corresponding circular disk. We discuss our results in terms of the disk(s) of massive stars at ~0.1pc from the Galactic Center, and find that the fragmentation of an eccentric accretion disk, due to gravitational instability, is a viable mechanism for the formation of these systems., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Most cool core clusters of galaxies possess active galactic nuclei (AGN) in their centers. These AGN inflate buoyant bubbles containing non-thermal radio emitting particles. If such bubbles efficiently confine cosmic rays (CR) then this could explain ``radio ghosts'' seen far from cluster centers. We simulate the diffusion of cosmic rays from buoyant bubbles inflated by AGN. Our simulations include the effects of the anisotropic particle diffusion introduced by magnetic fields. Our models are consistent with the X-ray morphology of AGN bubbles, with disruption being suppressed by the magnetic draping effect. We conclude that for such magnetic field topologies, a substantial fraction of cosmic rays can be confined inside the bubbles on buoyant rise timescales even when the parallel diffusivity coefficient is very large. For isotropic diffusion at a comparable level, cosmic rays would leak out of the bubbles too rapidly to be consistent with radio observations. Thus, the long confinement times associated with the magnetic suppression of CR diffusion can explain the presence of radio ghosts. We show that the partial escape of cosmic rays is mostly confined to the wake of the rising bubbles, and speculate that this effect could: (1) account for the excitation of the H$\alpha$ filaments trailing behind the bubbles in the Perseus cluster, (2) inject entropy into the metal enriched material being lifted by the bubbles and, thus, help to displace it permanently from the cluster center and (3) produce observable $\gamma$-rays via the interaction of the diffusing cosmic rays with the thermal intracluster medium (ICM)., Comment: submitted

Simulations and analytic arguments suggest that the turbulence driven by magnetorotational instability (MRI) in accretion discs can amplify the toroidal (azimuthal) component of the magnetic field to a point at which magnetic pressure exceeds the combined gas + radiation pressure in the disc. Arguing from the recent analysis by Pessah and Psaltis, and other MRI results in the literature, we conjecture that the limiting field strength for a thin disc is such that the Alfven speed roughly equals the geometric mean of the Keplerian speed and the gas sound speed. We examine the properties of such magnetically-dominated discs, and show that they resolve a number of outstanding problems in accretion disc theory. The discs would be thicker than standard (Shakura-Sunyaev) discs at the same radius and accretion rate, and would tend to have higher colour temperatures. If they transport angular momentum according to an alpha-prescription, they would be stable against the thermal and viscous instabilities that are found in standard disc models. We consider the dynamical evolution of a disk of stars orbiting a central black hole. In particular, we focus on the effect of the stellar mass function on the evolution of the disk, using both analytic arguments and numerical simulations. We apply our model to the ring of massive stars at ~0.1pc from the Galactic Center, assuming that the stars formed in a cold, circular disk, and find that our model requires the presence of a significant population of massive (>100Msun) stars in order to explain the the observed eccentricities of 0.2-0.3. Moreover, in order to limit the damping of the heavier stars' eccentricities, we also require fewer low-mass stars than expected from a Salpeter mass function, giving strong evidence for a significantly ``top-heavy'' mass function in the rings of stars seen near to the Galactic Center. We also note that the maximum possible eccentricities attainable from circular initial conditions at ages of <10Myr are around 0.4-0.5, and suggest that any rings of stars found with higher eccentricities were probably not formed from circular disks., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. The periodic precession (162--day) and nodding (6.3--day) motions of the jets in SS433 are driven in the outer regions of the disc, whereas the jets themselves, being relativistic, are launched near the black hole at the disc centre. Given that the nutation period is comparable to the dynamical timescale in the outer regions of the disc, it seems unlikely that these periods can be communicated efficiently to the disc centre. Here we propose that the massive outflow observed in SS433 is launched at large radii in the disc, about 1/10 of the outer disc edge, and that it is this outflow which responds to the oscillations of the outer disc and determines the direction of the jets. The massive outflow is launched at large radius because the mass transfer rate is hyper-Eddington. This implies not only that the total luminosity of SS433 exceeds $\le$ by a considerable factor, but also that the radiative output is collimated along the outflow. We thus suggest that SS433 is an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) viewed `from the side'. As soon as it was realized that long GRBs lie at cosmological distances, attempts have been made to use them as cosmological probes. Besides their use as lighthouses, a task that presents mainly the technological challenge of a rapid deep high resolution follow-up, researchers attempted to find the Holy Grail: a way to create a standard candle from GRB observables. We discuss here the attempts and the discovery of the Ghirlanda correlation, to date the best method to standardize the GRB candle. Together with discussing the promises of this method, we will underline the open issues, the required calibrations and how to understand them and keep them under control. We propose that the knots of the large-scale jets in powerful radio sources represent moving and separate portions of the jet matter, with the excess kinetic power. This can explain many morphological properties of quasar jets - like high knot-to-interknot brightness contrasts, frequency-independent knot profiles and almost universal extents of the knot regions - independently of the exact emission mechanisms responsible for producing broad-band jet emission. We examine the effects of photon bubble instability in radiation-dominated accretion disks such as those found around black holes in active galactic nuclei and X-ray binary star systems. Two- and 3-D numerical radiation MHD calculations of small patches of disk are used. Modes with wavelengths shorter than the gas pressure scale height grow faster than the orbital frequency in the surface layers. The fastest growth rate observed is five times the orbital frequency and occurs on nearly-vertical magnetic fields. The spectrum of linear modes agrees with a WKB analysis indicating still faster growth at unresolved scales, with a maximum proportional to the gravity and inversely proportional to the gas sound speed. Disturbances reaching non-linear amplitudes steepen into trains of shocks similar to a 1-D periodic non-linear analytic solution. Variations in propagation speed result in merging of adjacent fronts, and over time the shock spacing and amplitude increase. Growth is limited by the strength of the field, and the structure is disrupted when the ram pressure exceeds the magnetic pressure. The largest horizontal density variations are similar to the ratio of magnetic to gas pressure, and in our calculations are more than 100. Under the conditions considered, radiation diffuses through the inhomogeneneous flow 5x faster than through the initial hydrostatic equilibrium, and the net cooling rate is several times greater than in a similar calculation without magnetic fields showing the effects of convection. We discuss morphological properties of the large-scale jets in powerful radio sources, which are now observed at radio, optical and X-ray frequencies, in order to determine the origin of their X-ray radiation and the nature of the particle acceleration responsible for their multiwavelength emission. We show that modeling knots of the these objects as stationary regions of energy dissipation within the uniform and continuous jet flow leads to several problems. Such problems are especially pronounced if the observed X-ray emission is due to inverse-Compton scattering of the CMB radiation. We explore another possibility, namely that the knots represent moving and separate portions of the jet matter, with excess kinetic power. We suggest a possible connection between this scenario and the idea of intermittent/highly modulated jet activity. The proposed model can explain some morphological properties of quasar jets -- like high knot-to-interknot brightness contrasts, frequency-independent knot profiles and almost universal extents of the knot regions -- independently of the exact emission mechanism responsible for producing the X-rays. In this context, we consider different possibilities for the production of such X-ray radiation, and discuss the related issue of particle acceleration. We conclude that the appropriate process cannot be designated for certain yet. We suggest, however, that X-ray observations of the jet in 3C 120 (in which intermittent jet activity is quite distinct) already seem to support the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission, at least in this object., Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures included. (abridged) We present a detailed spectral analysis of the first observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 by the European Photon Imaging Camera on board the XMM-Newton observatory, together with contemporaneous data from the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Confirming our previously published result, we find that the presence of extremely broadened reflection features from an ionized relativistic accretion disk is required even when one employs the latest X-ray reflection models and includes the effect of complex absorption. The extremely broadened reflection features are also present if the primary continuum is modeled with a thermal Comptonisation spectrum rather than a simple power-law continuum. With this fact established, we examine these data using a relativistic smearing function corresponding to a ``generalized thin accretion disk'' model. We find strong evidence for torquing of the central parts of the accretion disk (presumably through magnetic interactions with the plunging region of the disk and/or the rotating black hole itself). We also perform a study of spectral variability within our observation. We find that the disk reflection features maintain roughly a constant equivalent width with respect to the observed continuum, as predicted by simple reflection models. Taken together with other studies of MCG-6-30-15 that find disk features to possess constant intensity at higher flux states, we suggest that the flux of disk features undergoes a saturation once the source emerges from a Deep Minimum state., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Our main conclusion is that, within the collapsar model, MHD effects alone are able to launch, accelerate and sustain a strong polar outflow. We present results from axisymmetric, time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the collapsar model for gamma-ray bursts. We begin the simulations after the 1.7 MSUN iron core of a 25 MSUN presupernova star has collapsed and study the ensuing accretion of the 7 MSUN helium envelope onto the central black hole formed by the collapsed iron core. We consider a spherically symmetric progenitor model, but with spherical symmetry broken by the introduction of a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum and a weak radial magnetic field. Our MHD simulations include a realistic equation of state, neutrino cooling, photodisintegration of helium, and resistive heating. Our main conclusion is that, within the collapsar model, MHD effects alone are able to launch, accelerate and sustain a strong polar outflow. We propose a gamma-ray burst scenario involving relativistic jets dominated by Poynting flux with alternating toroidal magnetic fields. Such a structure may arise naturally if the jet is formed and powered by the accretion flow in the core of a collapsar. We conjecture that the polarity of the toroidal magnetic field changes randomly due to hydromagnetic turbulence driven by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI), with the typical reversal time determined by the time scale for amplifying magnetic fields up to a dynamically important level. Poynting flux-dominated jets with reversing B-fields provide a natural and efficient way to dissipate energy via the reconnection process. Gamma-rays are produced at the spatially separated reconnection sites. In this scenario, the emergent synchrotron radiation can be highly polarized and can form both smooth and spiky light curves. We note the possibility that cold and dense filaments can form in the reconnection zones as the result of thermal instability. One could then explain the production of very hard X-ray spectra, as due to bound-free absorption of the synchrotron radiation., Comment: submitted in ApJ Letters

We report on the second phase of our study of slightly rotating accretion flows onto black holes. We consider magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) accretion flows with a spherically symmetric density distribution at the outer boundary, but with spherical symmetry broken by the introduction of a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum and a weak radial magnetic field. We study accretion flows by means of numerical 2D, axisymmetric, MHD simulations with and without resistive heating. Our main result is that the properties of the accretion flow depend mostly on an equatorial accretion torus which is made of the material that has too much angular momentum to be accreted directly. The torus accretes, however, because of the transport of angular momentum due to the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Initially, accretion is dominated by the polar funnel, as in the hydrodynamic inviscid case, where material has zero or very low angular momentum. At the later phase of the evolution, the torus thickens towards the poles and develops a corona or an outflow or both. Consequently, the mass accretion through the funnel is stopped. The accretion of rotating gas through the torus is significantly reduced compared to the accretion of non-rotating gas (i.e., the Bondi rate). It is also much smaller than the accretion rate in the inviscid, weakly rotating case.Our results do not change if we switch on or off resistive heating. Overall our simulations are very similar to those presented by Stone, Pringle, Hawley and Balbus despite different initial and outer boundary conditions. Thus, we confirm that MRI is very robust and controls the nature of radiatively inefficient accretion flows., Comment: submitted in ApJ

We report on the first phase of our study of slightly rotating accretion flows onto black holes. We consider inviscid accretion flows with a spherically symmetric density distribution at the outer boundary, but with spherical symmetry broken by the introduction of a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum. We study accretion flows by means of numerical 2D, axisymmetric, hydrodynamical simulations. Our main result is that the properties of the accretion flow do not depend as much on the outer boundary conditions (i.e., the amount as well as distribution of the angular momentum) as on the geometry of the non-accreting matter. The material that has too much angular momentum to be accreted forms a thick torus near the equator. Consequently, the geometry of the polar region, where material is accreted (the funnel), and the mass accretion rate through it are constrained by the size and shape of the torus. Our results show one way in which the mass accretion rate of slightly rotating gas can be significantly reduced compared to the accretion of non-rotating gas (i.e., the Bondi rate), and set the stage for calculations that will take into account the transport of angular momentum and energy., Comment: LaTeX,to appear in ApJ

We present a numerical investigation of dead, or relic, radio galaxies and the environmental impact that radio galaxy activity has on the host galaxy or galaxy cluster. We perform axisymmetric hydrodynamical calculations of light, supersonic, back-to-back jets propagating in a beta-model galaxy/cluster atmosphere. We then shut down the jet activity and let the resulting structure evolve passively. The dead source undergoes an initial phase of pressure driven expansion until it achieves pressure equilibrium with its surroundings. Thereafter, buoyancy forces drive the evolution and lead to the formation of two oppositely directed plumes that float high into the galaxy/cluster atmosphere. These plumes entrain a significant amount of low entropy material from the galaxy/cluster core and lift it high into the atmosphere. An important result is that a large fraction (at least half) of the energy injected by the jet activity is thermalized in the ISM/ICM core. The whole ISM/ICM atmosphere inflates in order to regain hydrostatic equilibrium. This inflation is mediated by an approximately spherical disturbance which propagates into the atmosphere at the sound speed. The fact that such a large fraction of the injected energy is thermalized suggests that radio galaxies may have an important role in the overall energy budget of rich ISM/ICM atmospheres. In particular, they may act as a strong and highly time-dependent source of negative feedback for galaxy/cluster cooling flows., Comment: 13 pages, 20 postscript figures. Theories of high energy radiation production in quasar jets can be verified by studies of both time-averaged spectra and variability patterns. While the former has been explored extensively, the latter is in its infancy. In this paper, we study the production of short-term flares in the shock-in-jet model. We examine how the flares' profiles depend on such parameters as shock/dissipation lifetime, electron-injection time profile, adiabaticity, and half-opening angle of the jet. In particular, we demonstrate the large difference between flare profiles produced in the radiative and adiabatic regimes. We apply our model to the $\sim$day timescale flares observed in optically violently variable (OVV) quasars, checking whether the external-radiation-Compton (ERC) model for $\gamma$-ray flares at energies $> 30$ MeV (EGRET range) can be reconciled with the flares observed at lower energies. Specifically, we show that the strict correlation between X-ray and $\gamma$-ray flares strongly supports the dominance of the synchrotron self-Compton mechanism in the X-ray band. We also derive conditions that must be satisfied by the ERC model in order to explain a lag of the $\gamma$-ray peak behind the optical one, as claimed to be observed in PKS 1406-076. Finally, we predict that in ERC models where the MeV peak is related to the break in electron distribution due to inefficient cooling of electrons below a certain energy, the flares should decay significantly more slowly in the soft $\gamma$-ray band than at energies greater than 30 MeV., Comment: accepted to ApJ

Motivated by hydrodynamic simulations, we discuss the X-ray appearance of radio galaxies embedded in the intracluster medium (ICM) of a galaxy cluster. We distinguish three regimes. In the early life of a powerful source, the entire radio cocoon is expanding supersonically and hence drives a strong shock into the ICM. Eventually, the sides of the cocoon become subsonic and the ICM is disturbed by the sonic booms of the jet's working surface. In both of these regimes, X-ray observations would find an X-ray shell. In the strong shock regime, this shell will be hot and relatively thin. However, in the weak shock (sonic-boom) regime, the shell will be approximately the same temperature as the undisturbed ICM. If a cooling flow is present, the observed shell may even be cooler than the undisturbed ICM due to the lifting of cooler material into the shell from the inner (cooler) regions of the cluster. In the third and final regime, the cocoon has collapsed and no well-defined X-ray shell will be seen. We present results from 170ksec long RXTE observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3, taken in 1996 December, where their spectra can be described by a disc black body plus an additional soft (Gamma~2.8) high-energy power-law (detected up to 50keV in LMC X-3). These observations, as well as archival ASCA observations, constrain any narrow Fe line present in the spectra to have an equivalent width <90eV, broad lines (~150eV EW, \sigma ~ 1keV) are permitted. We also study the variability of LMC X-1. Its X-ray power spectral density (PSD) is approximately f^{-1} between 10^{-3} and 0.3Hz with a rms variability of ~7%. Above 5keV the PSD shows evidence of a break at f > 0.2Hz, possibly indicating an outer disc radius of ~1000GM/c^2 in this likely wind-fed system. Furthermore, the coherence function between variability in the > 5keV band and variablity in the lower energy bands is extremely low. We present the analysis of an RXTE monitoring campaign of the canonical soft state black hole candidates LMC X-1 and LMC X-3. In contrast to LMC X-1, which does not exhibit any periodic spectral changes, we find that LMC X-3 exhibits stron spectral variability on time scales of days to weeks. For typical RXTE ASM count rates, the luminosity variations of LMC X-3 are due to changes of the phenomenological disk blackbody temperature. During episodes of especially low luminosity (ASM count rates < 0.6 counts/sec), kT strongly decreases and the power law significantly hardens to a photon index of ~1.8. These changes are consistent with state changes of LMC X-3 from the soft state to the canonical hard state of galactic black hole candidates. We argue that the long term variability of LMC X-3 might be due to a wind-driven limit cycle such as discussed by Shields et al. We explore the possibility that extragalactic radio jets might be accelerated by highly disorganized magnetic fields that are strong enough to dominate the dynamics until the terminal Lorentz factor is reached. Following the twin-exhaust model by Blandford & Rees (1974), the collimation under this scenario is provided by the stratified thermal pressure from an external medium. The acceleration efficiency then depends on the pressure gradient of that medium. In order for this mechanism to work there must be continuous tangling of the magnetic field, changing the magnetic equation of state away from pure flux freezing (otherwise conversion of Poynting flux to kinetic energy flux is suppressed). This is a complementary approach to models in which the plasma is accelerated by large scale ordered fields. We include a simple prescription for magnetic dissipation, which leads to tradeoffs among conversion of magnetic energy into bulk kinetic energy, random particle energy, and radiation. We present analytic dynamical solutions of such jets, assess the effects of radiation drag, and comment on observational issues, such as the predicted polarization and synchrotron brightness. The black hole candidate LMC X-3 varies by a factor of four in the soft X-rays on a timescale of 200 or 100days. We have monitored LMC X-3 with RXTE in three to four week intervals starting in December 1996, obtaining a large observational database that sheds light on the nature of the long term X-ray variability in this source. We propose that gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by a shower of heavy blobs running into circumstellar material at highly relativistic speeds. The gamma ray emission is produced in the shocks these bullets drive into the surrounding medium. The short term variability seen in GRBs is set by the slowing-down time of the bullets while the overall duration of the burst is set by the lifetime of the central engine. A requirement of this model is that the ambient medium be dense, consistent with a strong stellar wind. We present hard X-ray observations of the nearby radio galaxy M87 and the core of the Virgo cluster using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. These are the first hard X-ray observations of M87 not affected by contamination from the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388. Thermal emission from Virgo's intracluster medium is clearly detected and has a spectrum indicative of kT=2.5keV plasma with approximately 25% cosmic abundances. No non-thermal (power-law) emission from M87 is detected in the hard X-ray band, with fluctuations in the Cosmic X-ray Background being the limiting factor. Combining with ROSAT data, we infer that the X-ray spectrum of the M87 core and jet must be steep (Gamma_core>1.90$ and Gamma_jet>1.75), and we discuss the implications of this result. We present results from a 20 ksec RXTE observation of the black hole candidate Cyg X-1. We apply self-consistent accretion disk corona models to these hard state data and show that Comptonization in a spherical corona irradiated by soft photons from an exterior cold disk is able to successfully model the spectrum. We also present the power spectrum, the coherence function, and the time lags for lightcurves from four energy bands. Of all known persistent stellar-mass black hole candidates, only LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 consistently show spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal component. We present results from long (170ksec) Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 made in 1996 December. The spectra can be described by a multicolor disk blackbody plus an additional high-energy power-law. Even though the spectra are very soft (Gamma is about 2.5), RXTE detected a significant signal from LMC X-3 up to energies of 50keV, the hardest energy at which the object was ever detected. Focusing on LMC X-3, we present results from the first year of an ongoing monitoring campaign with RXTE which started in 1997 January. We show that the appearance of the object changes considerably over its ~200d long cycle. The relativistically broad X-ray iron line seen in many AGN spectra is thought to originate from the central regions of the putative black hole accretion disk. Both the line profile and strength will vary in response to rapid variability of the primary X-ray continuum source. The temporal response of the line contains information on the accretion disk structure, the X-ray source geometry, and the spin of the black hole. Since the X-ray source will have a size comparable to the fluorescing region of the accretion disk, the general reverberation problem is not invertible. However, progress can be made since, empirically, AGN light curves are seen to undergo dramatic short timescale variability which presumably corresponds to the creation of a single new active region within the distributed X-ray source. The iron line response to these individual events can be described using linear transfer theory. We consider the line response to the activation/flaring of a new X-ray emitting region. Most of our detailed calculations are performed for the case of an X-ray source on the symmetry axis and at some height above the disk plane around a Kerr black hole. We also present preliminary calculations for off-axis flares. We suggest ways in which future, high-throughput X-ray observatories such as XMM and the Constellation X-ray Mission may use these reverberation signatures to probe both the mass and spin of AGN black holes, as well as the X-ray source geometry., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures (assorted postscript and gif format). There have been a number of recent spectral models that have been successful in reproducing the observed X-ray spectra of galactic black hole candidates (GBHC). However, there still exists controversy over such issues as: what are the sources of hard radiation, what is the system's geometry, is the accretion efficient or inefficient, etc. A potentially powerful tool for distinguishing among these possibilities, made possible by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), is the variability data, especially the observed phase lags and variability coherence. These data, in conjunction with spectral modeling, have the potential of determining physical sizes of the system, as well as placing strong constraints on both Compton corona and advection models. We propose that the intensity changes and spectral evolution along the M87 jet can be explained by adiabatic changes to the particle momentum distribution function and the magnetic field. This is supported by the lack of any significant variation in the radio-to-optical spectral index along the jet and the moderate changes in radio brightness. Assuming a simple scaling law between magnetic field and density, we use the deprojection of a 2 cm VLA intensity map by Sparks, Biretta, & Macchetto (1996) to predict the spectral evolution along the jet. We derive limits for the magnetic field and the total pressure by comparing our results with the spatially resolved fit to spectral data by Neumann, Meisenheimer, & Roeser (1997) of a model spectrum that cuts off at approx 10^15 Hz. To explain the weakness of synchrotron cooling along the jet, the magnetic field strength must lie below the equipartition value. Although the inferred pressure in the limit of nonrelativistic bulk flow lies far above the estimated pressure of the interstellar matter in the center of M87, bulk Lorentz factors Gamma_jet in the range of 3 - 5 and inclination angles approx less than 25 deg lead to pressure estimates close to the ISM pressure. The average best fit magnetic fields we derive fall in the range of 20 - 40 microG, departing from equipartition by a factor approx 1.5 - 5. This model is consistent with the proposal by Bicknell & Begelman (1996) that the knots in the M87 jet are weak, oblique shocks. First-order Fermi acceleration will then have a minimal effect on the slope of the radio-- to-optical spectrum while possibly accounting for the X-ray spectrum., Comment: 44 pages, Latex, 8 postscript figures. We suggest that extragalactic radio sources are intermittent on timescales of 10^4-10^5 yr. Using a simple spherical model of a cocoon/shock system, it is found that inactive sources fade rapidly in radio luminosity but the shock in the ambient medium continues to expand supersonically, thereby keeping the whole source structure intact during the inactive phases. The fading of inactive sources, and the effect of the intermittency on the expansion velocity, can readily explain the observed over-abundance of small radio sources. In particular, the plateau in the observed distribution of sizes found by O'Dea & Baum (1997) can be interpreted as being due to intermittency. The model predicts that very young sources will be particularly radio luminous, once the effects of absorption have been accounted for. Furthermore, it predicts the existence of a significant number of faint `coasting' sources. These might be detectable in deep, low-frequency radio maps, or via the X-ray and optical emission line properties of the shock front., Comment: 7 pages, 4 postscript figures included. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) has made feasible for the first time the search for high-frequency (~ 100 Hz) periodic features in black hole candidate (BHC) systems. Such a feature, with a 67 Hz frequency, recently has been discovered in the BHC GRS 1915+105 (Morgan, Remillard, & Greiner). This feature is weak (rms variability ~0.3%-1.6%), stable in frequency (to within ~2 Hz) despite appreciable luminosity fluctuations, and narrow (quality factor Q ~ 20). Several of these properties are what one expects for a ``diskoseismic'' g-mode in an accretion disk about a 10.6 M_sun (nonrotating) - 36.3 M_sun (maximally rotating) black hole (if we are observing the fundamental mode frequency). We explore this possibility by considering the expected luminosity modulation, as well as possible excitation and growth mechanisms---including turbulent excitation, damping, and ``negative'' radiation damping.
