22. Making healthy eating and physical activity policy practice: process evaluation of a group randomized controlled intervention in afterschool programs

Abstract

This study describes the link between level of implementation and outcomes from an intervention to increase afterschool programs’ (ASPs) achievement of healthy eating and physical activity (HE-PA) Standards. Ten intervention ASPs implemented the Strategies-To-Enhance-Practice (STEPs), a multi-component, adaptive intervention framework identifying factors essential to meeting HE-PA Standards, while 10 control ASPs continued routine practice. All programs, intervention and control, were assigned a STEPs for HE-PA index score based on implementation. Mixed-effects linear regressions showed high implementation ASPs had the greatest percentage of boys and girls achieving 30 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (47.3 and 29.3%), followed by low implementation ASPs (41.3 and 25.0%), and control ASPs (34.8 and 18.5%). For healthy eating, high/low implementation programs served fruits and vegetables an equivalent number of days, but more days than control programs (74.0 and 79.1% of days versus 14.2%). A similar pattern emerged for the percent of days sugar-sweetened foods and beverages were served, with high and low implementation programs serving sugar-sweetened foods (8.0 and 8.4% of days versus 52.2%), and beverages (8.7 and 2.9% of days versus 34.7%) equivalently, but less often than control programs. Differences in characteristics and implementation of STEPs for HE-PA between high/low implementers were also identified.

Abstract

In het huidige onderzoek is nagegaan of ingroup bias een rol speelt in de Nederlandse rechtspraak. Hierbij is onderzocht of gelijkenis in gender en etniciteit tussen de verdachte of het slachtoffer met de rechter invloed heeft op de strafmaat. Verder is er onderzocht of empathie en genegenheid deze relatie mediëren. Tevens is er onderzocht of er een verschil is tussen rechtsgeleerden en niet-rechtsgeleerden, in de mate dat zij beïnvloed raken door gelijkenis met de verdachte/het slachtoffer. Om de onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden zijn er vragenlijsten verspreid zijn onder rechtsgeleerden (N=81) en niet-rechtsgeleerden (N=121). Deze vragenlijsten bevatten casussen die gebaseerd waren op echte rechtszaken. Uit de resultaten is gebleken dat zowel rechtsgeleerden als niet-rechtsgeleerden beïnvloed werden door gelijkenis in gender en etniciteit, wanneer zij een verdachte moesten veroordelen. Wel zijn er belangrijke correlaties gevonden tussen empathie/genegenheid en de hoogte van de straf. Deze emoties speelden alleen bij niet-rechtsgeleerden een rol. Daarom is het belangrijk dat hier meer onderzoek over komt, voordat niet-rechtsgeleerden betrokken worden bij het Nederlandse rechtssysteem.

27. Acute classroom exercise breaks improve on-task behavior in 4th and 5th grade students: A dose-response

Abstract

This study was the first to directly compare the acute effects of 5, 10, and 20 min of classroom exercise breaks on on-task behavior. Methods: In this within-subject experiment, 96 4th and 5th grade students, in 5 classroom groups, participated in each of four conditions: 10 min of sedentary classroom activity and 5, 10, 20 min of classroom exercise breaks led by research staff. On-task behavior was directly and systematically observed from videotapes before and after each condition. The post-test time-on-task scores were compared using a repeated measures mixed ANCOVA, adjusted for age, classroom, and the time-varying pre-test time-on-task. Results: Time-on-task was significantly higher in students after 10 min of classroom exercise breaks compared to a sedentary attention control (87.6% vs 77.1%, d = .45, p = .004). Conclusions: Ten minutes of classroom exercise breaks improved on-task behavior in children.

29. Cardiac autonomic control in individuals with Down syndrome

Abstract

Our goal in this study was to compare cardiac autonomic control at rest between 50 individuals with Down syndrome and 24 control participants without disabilities. Resting autonomic function was assessed using analysis of heart rate variability. Participants with Down syndrome had reduced total heart rate variability, which indicates possible autonomic dysfunction in this population. Their VO 2 peak and BMI were not significantly correlated with resting cardiac autonomic control. This may suggest that fitness level and obesity differentially affect cardiac autonomic control in persons with Down syndrome compared to their healthy, nondisabled peers. © American Association on Mental Retardation.

Abstract

The reliability and validity of the earlier developed Buruli ulcer functional limitation score (BUFLS) questionnaire was assessed. Of 638 former Buruli ulcer patients (of 678 individuals examined), sufficient items on daily activities (>= 13 of the 19) were applicable to calculate a score. To determine the validity, the functional limitation scores of the 638 individuals were compared with the global impression of the limitations, range of motion (ROM), and the social impact (change of occupation or education) of Buruli ulcer. To determine inter-observer reliability, the functional limitation score was reassessed in 107 participants within one and three weeks after the first interview by another interviewer and interpreter. Both global impression and ROM correlated well with the functional limitation scores (p 0.66 and p = 0.61). The inter-observer reliability of 107 participants as measured by an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.86 was very good. The functional limitation scores measured in the second assessment were significantly higher than in the first assessment. This should be taken into account when the functional limitation score is used for the individual patient. The BUFLS can be used as for between group comparisons of endpoints in clinical trials and in the planning of resources.
