Dietary carbohydrate manipulation can be used to reduce enteric CH 4 emission, but few studies have focused on the interaction of the different types of carbohydrates that can affect feed intake and ruminal fermentation. The effects of silage and concentrate on dry matter intake (DMI) were additive, with the highest feed intake in cows fed CS-BAR, followed by cows fed CS-DBP, GCS-BAR, and GCS-DBP (21.2, 19.9, 19.1, and 18.3 kg/d, respectively). Energy corrected milk (ECM) yield was not affected by silage source in first parity cows, but it was higher for cows fed CS than cows fed GCS in second parity. The effects of silage and concentrate on CH 4 production (g/d), yield (g/kg of DMI), and intensity (g/kg of ECM) were not additive, as cows fed GCS had similar responses regardless of the concentrate used, but cows fed CS had lower CH 4 production, yield, and intensity when fed BAR instead of DBP. The lower CH 4 production, yield, and intensity in cows fed CS-BAR compared with other diets could be partially explained by the nonlinear relationship between ruminal VFA and carbohydrates (NDF and starch) concentration reported in the literature; however, we observed a linear relationship between the acetate/propionate ratio and CH 4 yield, suggesting possible other effects. The effects of silage and concentrate on the ruminal VFA were additive in first parity cows, but not in second parity cows. Heat stress adversely affects sows' performance, which can be improved by applying proper nutritional strategies. This study was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of dietary fiber levels and sources on sows' reproductive performance, metabolic response during gestation, and the carry-over influence on litter performance in the lactation period during heat stress (average room temperature of 27.1 °C). Nowadays a healthy diet plays a very important role in the nutrition of people of every age group. In the context of constant growth in demand for healthy food products, it is important to expand the range of products with functional properties. Naturally enriched foods can not only maintain health, but also improve it. Pectin extract is a natural complexing agent, capable of removing toxic substances, heavy metals and radionuclides from the body. It is also an essential source of dietary fiber. The goal of the research was developing bakery products with dietary supplements for a healthy diet. The objects of the research were premium wheat flour and pectin extract obtained from beet pulp, a secondary raw material resource in the production of sugar. When designing new bread products with beet pulp extract, the recipe of traditional wheat bread was taken as a basis. It has been revealed that bread containing beet pulp extract in its recipe in a dosage of 10% by weight of flour has indicators that contribute to the formation of high-quality finished products. This product can be used by all age groups of the population for preventive purposes.The obtained results can be used in any food production involved in the design and production of enriched bakery products using innovative technologies.

Introduction: Several studies have explored the impact of diet type on energy sources. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of feeding glucogenic versus lipogenic diets to Holstein dairy cows during the close-up period on cows' performances and their calves' growth parameters. Materials and methods: Twenty-four Holstein dairy cows with an average parity of 3 selected for the study, starting 21 days before expected calving. The cows were divided into three groups based on a randomized complete block design including a control diet (glucogenic diet, Glu), a low lipogenic diet (Llip) with 25% barley grain replaced by beet pulp, and a high lipogenic diet (Hlip) with 50% barley grain replaced by beet pulp. Daily recording of dry matter intake (DMI) was conducted, with blood samples collected on the day of parturition in cows and days 1, 2, 7, and 21 of calves age. In dairy cows, both the quality and quantity of colostrum were determined. Additionally, performance variables including feed intake, average daily gain, and skeletal parameters such as shoulder height, hip height, and body length were measured. Blood parameters, such as glucose, triglyceride, and concentrations of certain liver enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), and serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) were recorded. Results: The increase of beet pulp in the prepartum diet led to a significant increase in DMI. Colostrum yield and constituents (protein, lactose, and solids nonfat percentage) decreased with an increase in beet pulp level and the differences between Glu and Hlip were significant. Performance parameters of the calves were similar across all treatments, except skeletal growth. Calves that were fed the Hlip diet showed a lower shoulder height compared to those fed the Glu diet. Blood glucose was significantly higher in cows and their offspring that were fed Llip diets compared to other groups. The concentration of liver enzymes, including ALP, SGPT, and SGOT was not affected by treatments. Conclusion: Substituting barley grain with beet pulp as a lipogenic component may enhance dry matter intake in periparturient dairy cows. Due to the latest scientific achievements new opportunities have appeared for deeper processing of not only raw materials, but also by-products of the country's agro-industrial complex. Beet sugar production is a source of a number of by-products such as beet pulp, molasses and filter cake. Domestic sugar production refers to material-intensive industries, since the volume of vegetable raw materials, as well as by-products formed in the technological process, is several times higher than the yield of finished products – white sugar. Insufficient attention to the problems of more complete processing of by-products of sugar beet production may be the cause of environmental degradation. Currently, not only the regulatory documentation regulating the quality indicators of raw materials used and finished products of the industry has been updated, but also the definition of by-products of sugar production, formed in the production of white sugar, has been clarified. In particular, by-products of the sugar beet industry can be used to extract useful components from them, suitable for the production of new food products with increased nutritional value. The main attention in the paper is paid to promising areas for the use of beet pulp for the production of new types of food products. A method has been developed for the production of sugar syrup enriched with pectin extract of beet pulp. The addition of beet pulp pectin extract to the syrup not only increases the nutritional value, but also improves its technological properties while expanding the range of new types of food products and their properties.

Over the past decades, the agro-industrial by-products (AIBP) have received considerable attention. In this context, we aimed to investigate the effect of AIBP as a source of non-fiber carbohydrates on biogas production kinetic, methane emission, and fermentation characteristics. Experimental treatments were (1) sugar beet pulp (SBP) (control), (2) apple pomace (AP), (3) orange pulp (OP, (4) 33% AP + 66% OP, (5) 50% AP + 50% OP, and (6) 66% AP + 33% OP. Field emission scanning electron microscope was used to show the nano structural differences of the AIBP. Results of proximate analyzes, demonstrated significant differences of the crude protein among the treatments (P < 0.05). Biogas production and methane emission were significantly higher in SBP and OP treatments (P < 0.05). The highest and the lowest amounts of acetate were observed for AP and OP (61.84 mmol/L, 58.15 mmol/L), respectively. More broken edges were obvious in OP images. Yet, particle size was rather smaller in SBP. Images of AP showed a sleek surface which may act as a shield preventing more digestion. To conclude, utilization of AIBP, as non-fiber energy source, not only could contribute towards reducing environmental contamination but could also positively affect degradation, biogas kinetics, methane emission and in vitro fermentation parameters. For a long time, co-products of food processing have been used in animal feed, but far less in fish because of their assumed inability to cope with high-fiber diets. Research on feeding co-products to fish species that naturally consume fibrous diets are yet lacking. We here evaluated the impact of sugar beet pulp in the diet of tambaquí on nutrient metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, and intestinal histomorphometry. A total of 18 tambaquí fish (1616 ± 107 g; 2 years old) were randomly divided over 6 similar tanks with 3 fish per tank and randomly attributed to one of the six dietary treatments 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 % beet pulp addition and reared for 8 weeks. Water quality parameters (pH, NH3–N, EC, TDS, DO, and temperature) were assessed and recorded twice a week for each tank. A quadratic increase in intestinal villus length, paravilli and absorptive surface were observed with beet pulp addition. Ammonia and pH as quality indicators were significantly changing with beet pulp addition. A higher supply of glucogenic substrate to the citric acid cycle was noticed with beet pulp addition due to the positive correlation with blood propionylcarnitine: acetylcarnitine ratio while there was no effect on ketone body synthesis as measured through the 3-hydroxybutyrylcarnitine: acetylcarnitine ratio. No pronounced change of serum and whole fish histamine and lowered concentrations of serum malondialdehyde were observed with beet pulp addition. In conclusion, beet pulp induced a marked increase in intestinal villus architecture without signs of inflammation or oxidative stress. Large-scale studies need to clarify if these features lead to improved growth performance but this work opens options for further study. The non-linear pattern of some blood components with increasing beet pulp may call for future optimal dosing and feed form of beet pulp together.

Sixty-four Holstein dairy cows (140 ± 26 d in milk) were randomly assigned to 8 pens (8 animals per pen). Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 concentrations of starch and 2 sources of fiber and were allotted to 8 pens (2 pens per treatment). Treatments were (1) 15% dry ground corn and 24% CS, (2) 15% dry ground corn and 24% BP replacing CS, (3) 30% dry ground corn and 24% CS, and (4) 30% dry ground corn and 24% BP replacing CS. The trial lasted for 47 d and final 7 d of experimental period was used for data and sample collection. Cows fed the BP-based diets had greater dry matter intake than those offered the CS-based diets, whereas no effects were observed with starch concentration. Milk yield increased by 1.8 kg/d with BP-based diets compared with CS-based diets and by 2.5 kg/d when cows received the high-starch compared with low-starch diets. Interactions between dietary starch concentration and forage substitution were detected for milk fat concentration and yield as BP inclusion lowered milk fat output with high-starch diet. Milk trans-18:1 concentration was lower with 15% dry ground corn and 24% CS compared with other diets. In conclusion, the effects of dietary starch concentration (22 and 32% dry matter) and forage substitution on production responses were independent except for milk fat output and milk trans 18:1 isomers. Substituting CS with BP is effective at increasing milk yield regardless of starch concentration; however, milk fat yield is lower when BP is used with high-starch concentration.

Fibre can interfere with digestibility of fat by accelerating intestinal passage or by increasing chyme viscosity. Lecithin is an important emulsifier which can improve fat digestion. The study aims to determine if fibre solubility may interfere with apparent or true total tract digestibility (ATTD; TTTD) of macronutrients and energy and if adding lecithin could improve fat digestibility. Stool quality was evaluated regarding fibre and lecithin inclusion. Eighteen adult dogs fed 130 kcal metabolisable energy × BW kg0.75/day were assigned in a 3 × 2 factorial Design, two blocks of 10 days to complete six replications per treatment. Two factors were tested, the source of fibre replacing starch and the inclusion of lecithin. Six diets were formulated with 10% corn starch or cellulose powder, or beet pulp and then all of the diets were dressed with 10% poultry fat or 1% soy lecithin + 9% poultry fat. The fibre inclusion reduced ATTD of dry matter, organic matter, carbohydrates, and energy. The ATTD of fat, crude protein, acid detergent fibre (ADF), and energy, and the TTTD of fat were decreased by adding soluble fibre in the diet, while the ATTD of ADF was greater for the cellulose diet. Soluble fibre impairs absorption of fat and other nutrients, then energy, while insoluble fibre is more related to effects on energy dilution. Lecithin is not able to restore fat digestibility, but lecithin improves energy absorption when insoluble fibre is included. Both sources can be used to produce low energy diets and modulate faecal score: soluble fibre holds water in the faecal content while insoluble fibre tends to produce dried faeces.Highlights Soluble fibre inclusion reduces digestibility of protein, fat, and energy. Soybean oligosaccharides (OS) have been recognized as a prebiotic that can be fermented in the colon, resulting in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production that can be used as an energy source for colonocytes, supporting cell differentiation and gut health. The objective was to determine the effects of WSBOS on in vitro fermentation, using dog feces as inoculum. Treatments included total dietary fiber (TDF) residues from WSB, soybean hulls (SH), pea fiber (PF), and beet pulp (BP), as well as WSB TDF residue plus soybean OS (WSBOS) and WSB TDF residue plus raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose (WSBRSV). Fresh fecal samples were collected from dogs and maintained in anaerobic conditions until substrate inoculation. Test tubes containing fiber sources and inoculum were incubated for 4, 8, and 12 h at 39 °C. Organic matter disappearance (OMD), pH, and SCFA were measured. The WSBOS and WSBRSV had greater (p < 0.05) OMDs than BP. Butyrate production was greatest (p < 0.05) for WSBOS (294.7 µmol/g) and WSBRSV (266.1 µmol/g), followed by BP (130.3 µmol/g) and WSB (109.2 µmol/g), and lowest (p < 0.05) for PF (44.1 µmol/g). The production of total SCFA was greatest (p < 0.05) for BP and WSBOS, followed by WSB, and lowest (p < 0.05) for PF. In conclusion, WSB has the potential as a prebiotic demonstrating greater butyrate production than BP in a canine in vitro fermentation model due to the fermentation of both OS and fiber in WSB. The main objective of our work is to optimize the 1st step of the dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis of Moroccan sugar beet pulp. The optimal conditions were not only determined using the response surfaces methodology (RSM). They were defined by applying a multi-objective optimization using a desirability function. The effects of temperature (80–130 °C), sulfuric acid concentration (0.75–1.5 % v/v), and time (40–120 min) on the production of pentoses, hexoses, furfural, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) were determined by experiment according to a central composite design (CCD). These experimental data were exploited to develop four statistical models by RSM, relating the production of each product of pretreated pulp to the operating conditions. All these models produced very satisfactory results, in term of correlation coefficients and student test. These models have been used for a multi-objective optimization to maximize pentoses and hexoses production, and minimize concentrations of furfural and HMF, simultaneously. The optimal conditions were 130 °C for temperature, 0.75 (%, v/v) for sulfuric acid concentration, and 120 min for time. These conditions allowed 85.68 % of pentoses, 18.6% of hexoses, 8.53 % of furfural, and 6.58 % of HMF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a recipe for a feed additive for dairy cows. According to the calculated recipe, experimental batches of feed additives were developed in the feed mill. The nutritional and energy value of the obtained feed additives were determined. According to the results obtained, when using beet pulp 15%, molasses 15% in place of wheat bran, the digestible protein increases by 45-50%, and good results are also obtained for other quality indicators. It has been experimentally confirmed that the use of cattle rations of sugar beet production waste contributes to the reduction of feed costs, the cost of production of a unit of production.

Advances in waste-to-energy technology and sustainable fuel production drive significant changes in the energy industry. These innovative solutions not only address waste management challenges but also contribute to broadening the energy source matrix and reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels. This study evaluates the incorporation of polyethylene and polypropylene urban plastic waste in various agro-industrial by-product blends, which combine beet pulp, radiata pine, and eucalyptus bark wastes. The generation of the hybrid biofuel from agro-industrial waste and domestic solid waste in pellet form is investigated to determine the optimal blends in terms of durability, ash generation and calorific value. Both urban plastics incorporated in the mixtures not only significantly increase the calorific energy value but also promote the binding of the solid biofuel components. The polypropylene-based urban plastic pellet exhibited superior binding capacity and lower ash generation, even in complex hydroxyl functional groups. It also displayed suitable properties for solid biofuels, such as low fine content, high durability, and dimensional stability. The highest resulting calorific value of 22.6 MJ/kg was determined for the mass ratio of the blend with 99% durability, 0.23% fines content, and 5.1% combustion ash generation. This new hybrid biofuel is presented as a sustainable option and a significant contribution in the field of waste-to-energy technology and renewable energy production. The production cost of the hybrid biofuel is competitive with wood-based biofuels, with only a 6.25% increase observed for pellets made from 50% wood and 20% beet pulp compared to traditional 100% wood pellets. However, significant cost reductions were achieved through specific configurations, resulting in savings of 14.8%. The novel hybrid biofuel requires only 9.2 MJ/kg to produce 22.6 MJ/kg, demonstrating significant energy impact and viability as a sustainable energy source in waste-to-energy technology and renewable energy production. The objects of research are the process of sugar beet processing, sugar beet, sugar and molasses. The problem of determining critical control points in sugar beet processing and safety indicators of raw materials and products of the sugar industry was solved. The results were obtained based on the risk analysis and the system of control points for sugar beet processing, five critical control points were identified according to the criteria of physical, chemical and biological contamination. It was also found that in terms of safety indicators, raw materials – sugar beet, and finished products meet the requirements of regulatory documents for microbiological indicators and heavy metal content. The safety indicators of sugar beet, white sugar, molasses and beet pulp were studied. Microbiological indicators: CGB (coliforms), pathogens and S.aureus were not found in sugar beet samples. Microbiological indicators of QMAFAnM and yeast of white sugar, molasses and pulp 1–5*10², 6–7*10², 5–8*10² and 2–3*10¹, 1–3*10¹, 1*10¹ CFU/cm³, respectively, are within acceptable limits. The content of toxic elements did not exceed the permissible limits. For Kazakhstan sugar factories, no studies on hazard analysis and critical control points in the sugar industry have been conducted before, so the results of the study will fill this gap. The scope and conditions for the practical use of the results obtained are the possibilities of raising the quality of finished products and improving the safety of raw materials and finished products, increasing the shelf life of by-products (molasses, beet pulp) of sugar beet production. This study aimed to investigate the impact of heat stress (HS) and the effects of dietary soluble fiber from beet pulp (BP) on gene expression (differentially expressed genes, DEGs) of the porcine jejunum. Out of the 82 DEGs, 47 genes were up-regulated, and 35 genes were downregulated between treatments. The gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs were related mainly to the actin cytoskeleton organization and muscle structure development in biological processes, cytoplasm, stress fibers, Z disc, cytoskeleton, and the extracellular regions in cellular composition, and actin binding, calcium ion binding, actin filament binding, and pyridoxal phosphate binding in the molecular function. The KEGG pathway analysis showed that the DEGs were involved in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, vascular smooth muscle contraction, regulation of actin cytoskeleton, mucin type O-glycan biosynthesis, and African trypanosomiasis. Several of the genes (HSPB6, HSP70, TPM1, TAGLN, CCL4) in the HS group were involved in cellular oxidative stress, immune responses, and cellular differentiation. In contrast, the DEGs in the dietary BP group were related to intestinal epithelium integrity and immune response to pathogens, including S100A2, GCNT3, LYZ, SCGB1A1, SAA3, and ST3GAL1. Sustainability of the sugar crops harvesting and processing industry is closely associated with valorization of its byproducts via conversion into beneficial bioproducts, biomaterials, biochemicals, and biofuels, with potential in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. Sugar crops are versatile in that they include a rich sugar fraction (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) in addition to fiber (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin). Byproducts such as leaves and tops can be used for fodder; bagasse and molasses for fuel and chemicals and press mud as fertilizer, and these encompass just a few examples of a myriad of applications. A detailed review of the state-of-the-art value-added conversion technologies for these byproducts is described in detail herein. Some technologies generate multiple co-products simultaneously, making the conversion more economically attractive and competitive toward traditional materials. There is also the opportunity for the creation of new jobs and markets for the dissemination of these products. In the first of two manuscripts, production of these byproducts is detailed together with their specific physicochemical properties and applications. Around the world, growing energy consumption from rapid urbanization and industrialization together with the overwhelming reliance on fossil fuels is affecting the integrity of both natural and human systems. Additionally, rising oil and gas prices and potential future shortages lead to concerns about the security of the energy supply needed to sustain our economic growth. This has resulted in an increased awareness for environmental sustainability in all industrial sectors. In the agricultural sector, sugar crops processing for the production of sugar generates a wide variety of by-products. Their reuse represents a prime opportunity for value capture and for the sugar processing industry to be in the forefront of sustainability, while possibly realizing additional profits. Sugar crops such as sugarcane and sugar beets are versatile in that they include a rich sugar fraction (sucrose, syrups) in addition to fiber (cellulose), fodder (green and brown leaves and tops), fuel and chemicals (bagasse, molasses), and fertilizer (press mud). This is the first of two papers where production of several by-products is detailed together with their specific physicochemical properties and the ways in which they can be utilized beneficially and sustainably. This work focuses on the investigation of the hygrothermal performance of four different wall insulation assemblies including starch/beet pulp composite for an office in France under two climatic conditions. Subsequently, a comparative performance analysis is made on all studied assemblies by substituting the Starch/beet pulp composite with hemp concrete (HC). For each design, the overall energy performance, total water content, drying rate and condensation risk were evaluated through hygrothermal simulations using the WUFI® Plus software and mold growth risk assessment was conducted with WUFI®Bio software. Results showed that insulation assemblies based on Starch/Beet pulp exhibited a slightly improved effectiveness in potential energy savings and higher dryness rate while having a higher condensation risk, a lower dynamic thermal performance, and a higher susceptibility to mold growth risk. Moreover, insulation assemblies based on Starch/Beet pulp demonstrated better hygrothermal performance under Nancy's climate compared to that of Marseille. Wall assemblies based on hemp concrete reduced total energy consumption by up to 35 % in Nancy's climate and 24.9 % in Marseille's climate. In comparison, starch/beet pulp concrete achieved reductions of up to 37.5 % and 26 % respectively. However, the mold growth risk for starch/beet pulp was 1.2–7.2 times higher than for hemp concrete. In Marseille's climate, this risk was 2.3–8.9 times higher for starch/beet pulp and 4.7–17.8 times higher for hemp concrete compared to Nancy's climate. The findings from these room-scale studies enhance the understanding of the hygrothermal behavior of the Starch/Beet pulp bio-composite material by comparing its performance, under the same conditions, to that of the well-studied hemp concrete material in the literature. Additionally, these studies provide greater insight into the impact of water on the overall energy consumption, service performance of a building and health hazards. Soybean oligosaccharides (OS) have been recognized as a prebiotic that can be fermented in the colon, resulting in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production that can be used as an energy source for colonocytes, supporting cell differentiation and gut health. The objective was to determine the effects of WSBOS on in vitro fermentation, using dog feces as inoculum. Treatments included total dietary fiber (TDF) residues from WSB, soybean hulls (SH), pea fiber (PF), and beet pulp (BP), as well as WSB TDF residue plus soybean OS (WSBOS) and WSB TDF residue plus raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose (WSBRSV). Fresh fecal samples were collected from dogs and maintained in anaerobic conditions until substrate inoculation. Test tubes containing fiber sources and inoculum were incubated for 4, 8, and 12 h at 39 °C. Organic matter disappearance (OMD), pH, and SCFA were measured. The WSBOS and WSBRSV had greater (p < 0.05) OMDs than BP. Butyrate production was greatest (p < 0.05) for WSBOS (294.7 µmol/g) and WSBRSV (266.1 µmol/g), followed by BP (130.3 µmol/g) and WSB (109.2 µmol/g), and lowest (p < 0.05) for PF (44.1 µmol/g). The production of total SCFA was greatest (p < 0.05) for BP and WSBOS, followed by WSB, and lowest (p < 0.05) for PF. In conclusion, WSB has the potential as a prebiotic demonstrating greater butyrate production than BP in a canine in vitro fermentation model due to the fermentation of both OS and fiber in WSB. Further animal feeding studies are needed to determine the appropriate amount of WSB in canine diets.

Finishing entire male pigs after puberty is not common in Europe due to aggression and boar taint. Alternatives to surgical castration or immunocastration should be explored as the production of entire males can also increase the productivity and sustainability of swine production. This study evaluated the performance, welfare, health, and meat quality of heavier pigs (from 95 to 135 kg) raised without castration. A factorial experiment consisting of 2 housing conditions (H1 control, H2 improved) x 3 diets (D1 - control diet, D2 - 10% beet pulp, D3 - 5% beet pulp + 4% Fibrofos) with 60 entire males randomly allocated to 6 pens, 23 to 30 weeks of age, was conducted using a Pietrain x (Large White x Landrace) cross. Treatment effects were evaluated with respect to growth, carcass yield, skin lesions, cortisol, hemogram, skatole, androstenone and meat physicochemical characteristics. Improved housing with more headspace, larger feeders, extra drinkers, environmental enrichment (organic toys), and group stability until slaughter led to a significant decrease in androstenone levels and benefited animal health and welfare without compromising performance. In addition, diets with inulin from Fibrofos or sugar beet pulp allowed to significantly reduce skatole content. Due to the price, beet pulp is more sustainable and its 10% inclusion did not negatively affect either intake or performance. The article presents results of efficacy studies for a complex plant-based preparation for poultry mycotoxicosis. Feed additive fibralin contains polysaccharides (dried sugar beet pulp) and phospholipids (rapeseed lecithin) in the proportion 4:1. Eighteen-day-old “Ross-308” broiler chickens with average weight of (665.10 ± 4.28) g were tested, since such mycotoxins as T-2 toxin, zearalenone and aflatoxin B1 were detected in their feeds. Maximum admissible level of each toxin was not exceeded, however, their cumulative effect on poultry resulted in mycotoxicosis. Use of fibralin in the feed (3 kg per one ton) for 10 days reduced clinical signs of intoxication, increased flock survival by 13.5% and stimulated body weight gain by 15.8%. Pharmacological effect of fibralin was demonstrated by improvement of blood morphobiochemical parameters in poultry, i.e. reduction of leukocytes by 19.3% and cholesterol by 13.6%; and an increase in the number of erythrocytes by 19.4%, hemoglobin by 8.1% and calcium by 9.5%. Antitoxin therapy had a positive effect on liver structure and functions and that fact was confirmed by a decrease in aminotransferase level in serum and normal levels of total protein. The data obtained may justify the use of this natural bio-preparation as a product with antitoxic and hepatoprotective properties and the use of fibralin for mycotoxicosis treatment of poultry.

The aim of the present study was to compare orange fibre, beet pulp and inulin as fibre sources for cats. A control diet (CON) was formulated without inclusion of a fibre source. Further experimental diets were also based on diet CON but were supplemented with 1% orange fibre (diet 1%OF); 3% orange fibre (diet 3%OF); 3% beet pulp (diet 3%BP) or 1% inulin (diet 1%IN). Forty cats were used in a randomised block design (4 blocks of 10 cats, 2 animals per food in each block, totalling 8 animals per treatment). Each block lasted 20 d, with 10 d of adaptation, 10 d of faecal collection for digestibility as well as evaluation of pH-value and fermentation products. The digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, starch and gross energy did not vary between diets. In diet 1%OF, dietary fibre revealed a greater digestibility than in diet CON (p < 0.05). Faecal production was higher in cats fed diets 3%OF and 3%BP than in those fed diet 1%IN (p < 0.05). Faecal concentrations of acetate and total short-chain fatty acids were higher for cats fed diet 3%BP than for those fed diets 1%IN and CON (p < 0.05), while diets 1%OF and 3%OF showed intermediate results. Faecal propionate concentration was higher for cats fed diet 3%BP, intermediate for diets 1%OF, 3%OF and 1%IN and lower for animals fed diet CON (p < 0.05). Compared with diets CON and 1%IN, the faecal concentration of tyramine was higher for cats fed diet 3%OF (p < 0.05). Orange fibre was fermentable; up to 3% inclusion it did not interfere with the digestibility of nutrients, faecal score and faecal moisture content, and promoted the formation of short-chain fatty acids and tyramine by the intestinal microbiota, with possible effects on intestinal function. Beet pulp is a secondary resource of the sugar industry which consists mainly of high molecular weight polysaccharides. However, 1/8 of beet pulp is not demanded by domestic industry but this fact makes it promising as the main carrier of nutrients for the microbiological industry, in particular, the microbiological synthesis of alternative fuels. The article provides an overview of domestic and foreign scientific research on obtaining alternative fuel resources. The main ones are hydrogen, methane, ethanol, butanol and acetone. Currently, the highest yield of fuel resources obtained by the microbiological method reaches 0.4 g/g of sugars. When usingEscherichia coli, the end product is ethanol, and Clostridium beijerinckii is acetone and butanol.Methane production is at the level of 502.5 l/kg of volatile solids, and that of hydrogen is 197.9 ml/g of total carbon, however, the microorganisms used are not named by the authors. To achieve such indicators the method of preparing beet pulp is important, since it is necessary to hydrolyze the largest amount of polysaccharides into monosaccharides. So, pre-treatment of beet pulp with sulfuric acid can increase the degree of hydrolysis from 33% to 93%. In addition, beet pulp can be used to immobilize Saccharomyces cerevisiae when processing molasses or syrup solutions for ethanol synthesis, providing up to 7 fermentation cycles before the retention agent loses its properties. The production of ethanol in this case will be 0.446 g/g of sugars. The works aimed at a feasibility study of the feasibility of installing biogas plants at sugar factories for various regions of Russia are considered. However, since Russia is a country with significant reserves of fossil fuels, the payback period for the introduction of biogas plants is quite high.

Beet pulp is an extremely very wet organic waste derived from sugar production. It can be utilized for energy purposes, e.g. biogas production or as very valuable fodder for animals, mainly horses. The high moisture content (80%) in beet pulp makes it an adequate feedstock for the hydrothermal carbonization process. Therefore, this study is focussed on the hydrothermal carbonization of beet pulp. The following parameters were studied: temperatures of 180, 200, and 220 °C through 1, 2, 3, and 4 h of residence time. The optimal conditions of the process were determined (220 °C and 1 h), based on the physical and chemical properties of solid product hydrochar. The ultimate and proximate analyses, high heating value, energy and mass yields, and energy densification ratio were investigated. The obtained hydrochars were of a coal-like solid biofuel, with high heating values much higher than raw feedstock (c.a. 150% higher). The combustion performance and kinetics of hydrochar based on TGA were determined, indicating better combustion. Moreover, the fibre analysis of hydrochar, supported by infrared spectra and scanning microscope analysis confirmed the changes in its structure. Concluding, organic waste, beet pulp, is of great potential as an energy source using the hydrothermal pretreatment process. Fermentable fibres are used in commercial dog food to promote intestinal health by providing substrates for better metabolic activity of the gut microbiota. Brazil is the world's largest producer of oranges, from which it is possible to obtain fibre with a relevant soluble fraction. The present study compared the effects of two inclusions of orange fibre (1% and 3%, on as fed basis) with a negative control (without addition of fibre source) and two positive controls, beet pulp (3%) and purified inulin (1%), totalling five extruded diets for dogs. The experiment followed a randomised block design with 4 blocks of 10 dogs, 2 dogs per food in each block, totalling 8 dogs per diet. The apparent total tract nutrient digestibility was determined by total faecal collection. Faecal pH and fermentation product content were also measured. The digesta mean retention time (DMRT) was evaluated using plastic markers. The inclusion of a 3% fibre source in diets with 3% orange fibre and beet pulp reduced DM, OM, and energy digestibility (p < 0.05). Diets with 3% orange fibre, beet pulp and 1% inulin presented lower crude protein digestibility than the control (p < 0.05). Dietary fibre digestibility was higher for orange fibre-supplemented diets than inulin (p < 0.05). Beet pulp and 3% orange fibre inclusions resulted in increased moisture content in the faeces of dogs (p < 0.05) but did not alter DMRT. Total short-chain fatty acids were higher than the control in the faeces of dogs fed both orange fibre levels and the beet pulp-supplemented diet (p < 0.05), and the inulin diet-fed dogs presented intermediate values. Butyrate was higher in the faeces of dogs fed the diets supplemented with 1% and 3% orange fibre (p < 0.05), and similar values to the control were observed for beet pulp- and inulin-fed animals. Thus, it was concluded that orange fibre presented higher apparent total tract dietary fibre digestibility than beet pulp and had a fermentation profile in the colon that promoted the generation of butyrate, an effect not observed for inulin and beet pulp. It has been previously shown that magnetite (Fe 3 O 4) nanoparticles stimulate the anaerobic digestion process in several anaerobic reactors. Here we evaluate the effect of magnetite nanoparticles on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of distillers grains with solubles and sugar beet pulp in mesophilic batch experiments. The addition of magnetite nanopowder had a positive effect on the anaerobic digestion process. CH 4 was produced faster in the presence of 50 mg of Fe 3 O 4 per 1 g of added total solids than from treatments without addition of Fe 3 O 4. These results demonstrate that the addition of magnetite enhances the methanogenic decomposition of organic acids. Microbial community structure and dynamics were investigated based on bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA genes, as well as mcrA genes encoding the methyl-CoM reductase. Depending on the reactor, Bacteroides , midas_1138, Petrimonas , unclassified Rikenellaceae (class Bacteroidia), Ruminiclostridium , Proteiniclasticum , Herbinix , and Intestinibacter (class Clostridia) were the main representatives of the bacterial communities. The archaeal communities in well-performed anaerobic reactors were mainly represented by representatives of the genera Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium. Nickel/carbon composites were synthesized by the carbonization method with the use of the steam-gas activation technique. Beet pulp and corn stems were used as initial raw materials for composites synthesis. The obtained substances were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and magnetic properties investigation. The presence of nickel in synthesized composites was estimated during analysis, and the average particle size of nickel was determined as well. The specific surface area of the obtained samples was measured by the technique of Methylene blue sorption from the aqueous solution. The results of the performed investigation demonstrate clearly the promising application of synthesized composites as magneto-active sorbents, which could be easily separated from water solutions. The article presents the results of studies on the effect of the size of dry non-granulated beet pulp particles on the process of preliminary decationization. Disubstituted sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid was used as a model complexone in fractional concentrations from a fiducial value of 2.87 g / dm3. The global extremes of the dynamics of the specific electrical conductivity of the system “beet pulp - complexone solution” have been selected as a primary response, as corresponding to the moment of complexone saturation with cations. This study investigated the effects of substituting beet pulp (BP) for different grains (barley or corn) in the diet of high-producing dairy cows on intake, feeding behavior, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, milk production, and feed conversion efficiency. Eight second-parity Holstein cows (62 ± 2 d in milk; milk yield = 54 ± 1.2 kg/d; body weight = 624 ± 26; all mean ± SE) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design during 4 periods of 21 d. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments that were a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of 2 grain sources (corn or barley) and 2 levels of BP inclusion [5 or 15% of dry matter (DM)] in the diet: (1) barley-based diet with BP at 5% of dietary DM; (2) barley-based diet with BP at 15% of dietary DM; (3) corn-based diet with BP at 5% of dietary DM; and (4) corn-based diet with BP at 15% of dietary DM. The increasing amount of BP in the diet was at the expense of decreasing an equal proportion of grain (barley or corn). All diets were high in concentrates (65% of diet DM) and formulated to have similar concentrations of energy and protein. The portion of feedstuffs that is potentially able to be consumed by humans is known as human edible. Accordingly, human-edible protein (HEP) and human-edible energy (HEE) inputs were calculated according to the recommended potential human-edible fraction of each dietary ingredient, and HEP and HEE outputs were determined as the amount of gross energy and true protein in the milk. Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) for HEP and HEE were expressed as output per input of each variable, whereas FCE for the production of fat-corrected milk (FCM) and energy-corrected milk (ECM) were expressed as the amount of each variable per DM intake. Results showed that substituting BP for grain did not affect DM intake, crude protein intake, or nutrient digestibility, whereas starch intake (5.70 vs. 7.43 kg/d for the low-BP vs. high-BP diets, respectively), HEP (2.34 and 1.92 kg/d), and HEE (186 and 147 MJ of gross energy/d) decreased. Treatments did not affect sorting and chewing activities, but increasing BP in the diet increased ruminal pH at 4 h after feeding (6.20 vs. 6.39) and milk fat content (2.92 vs. 3.15%). Similarly, FCE for ECM production (1.44 vs. 1.54) as well as FCE for HEE (0.653 vs. 0.851) and HEP (0.629 vs. 0.702) were greater in high-BP diets compared with low-BP diets. The interaction of BP and grain sources significantly affected FCE for ECM production, where improvements were more evident when BP was substituted for barley than for corn. The improvement in FCE for HEE was greater when BP was substituted for barley (0.236) rather than corn (0.161). In conclusion, the substitution of BP for barley or corn grains in high-concentrate diets of high-producing cows decreased starch intake, increased ruminal pH at 4 h after feeding, and improved FCE for FCM production. Cellulose and beet pulp have been commonly used in the pet food industry to increase the dietary fiber content of cat foods. However, pet food companies seek alternatives to these so-called byproducts. Miscanthus grass is grown for its fiber content and may serve as an alternative to traditional fibrous ingredients. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of fiber sources on extrusion processing and kibble structure of cat foods. Three replicate batches of a complete and balanced foods for adult cats at maintenance each containing 10% of Miscanthus grass, cellulose, or beet pulp was mixed and kibbles were produced on a single-screw extruder. Feed rate, preconditioner water and steam, extruder screw speed, extruder water and steam addition, and knife speed were adjusted to achieve a wet bulk density of 330 g/L. After extrusion, kibbles were dried at 115.5 ºC to less than 10% moisture. Dried kibbles were coated with chicken fat and flavor enhancer. No effects due to fiber source were reported for extrusion parameters or kibble measurements (P > 0.05) with the exception of compression energy, wherein kibbles produced with cellulose required more energy to compress than those containing beet pulp (6,917 N mm vs. 3,591 N mm, respectively). In conclusion, tested fiber sources had no impact on extrusion parameters and most kibble characteristics. Kibbles containing cellulose required more energy to compress than kibbles containing beet pulp. Pet food companies use fibrous ingredients in cat foods to aid weight and hairball management. Miscanthus grass could be an alternative novel fibre source for cat foods. The objectives of this work were to determine the effects of Miscanthus grass as a fibre source on nutrient utilization, stool quality and hairball management in cats. Dry extruded cat foods (average chemical composition; digestibility trial: 94.54% dry matter—DM, 34.47% crude protein—CP, 11.67% crude fat, 7.06% ash and 13.04% total dietary fibre—TDF; and hairball trial: 94.88% DM, 34.60% CP, 11.30% crude fat, 7.02% ash and 9.77% TDF) were fed to 12 cats for a 9‐day (digestibility trial) or 16‐day (hairball trial) adaptation period followed by a 5‐day total faecal collection period. Digestibility trial was performed as a replicated Latin square design, and the hairball trial was performed as a switchback design. In general, the cats fed the beet pulp diet (BPD) had higher DM, organic matter, gross energy and TDF digestibility than cats fed Miscanthus grass (MGD) or cellulose (CED) diet (p <.05). However, CP digestibility was lower for cats fed BPD (82.1 vs. 84.7 and 85.1%, respectively, for BPD, MGD and CED). These differences could be due to the differences in dietary fibre content and(or) composition. Faecal scores were lower for cats fed BPD (2.84) compared with MGD (3.32) and CED (3.21; p <.05). No effects due to fibre were reported on the faecal hairball variables, with the exception of less total hair weight and hair clumps per gram of dry faeces for cats fed Miscanthus grass (MGH) compared with control diet (COH; p <.05). The concentration of volatile fatty acid (VFA) provides an imprecise view of VFA dynamics due to the confounding effects of fluid pool size and dynamics. Determination of VFA flux using isotope is expensive and a complex methodology. Therefore, a rapid and affordable approach to explore VFA dynamics may allow comprehensive characterization of VFA availability. The objective of this study was to explore the use of VFA dynamics generated by meal feeding to derive time-series rates of VFA apparent appearance and disappearance driven by different protein and fiber sources. Six ruminally cannulated wethers were fed diets containing timothy hay or beet pulp (TH and BP) and soybean meal (SBM) or heated soybean meal (HSBM). Diets were, TH + HSBM; TH + SBM; BP + HSBM; and BP + SBM and the experimental design was a partially replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square. Concentrations of VFA and polyethylene glycol (PEG) in rumen fluid samples were estimated. Concentrations of PEG were used to estimate fluid passage and volume to calculate VFA mass, and fluid-mediated exit. Maximum apparent appearance rate (mmol/h), the rate of apparent appearance decline (mmol/mmol/h), mean apparent appearance flux (mmol/h), mean apparent disappearance (mmol/h), and apparent disappearance rate (mmol/mmol/h) were estimated by deriving a 1 pool model for each VFA on a mass basis where appearance was assumed to follow an exponential decay pattern and disappearance followed mass-action kinetics. Statistical analyses were conducted using a linear mixed effect regression with fixed effects for fiber source, protein source, and their interaction, as well as random effects for animal and period. Rumen fluid volume (L) was greater in HSBM diets (P = 0.033) and fluid passage (%/h) was greater in SBM diets (P = 0.048). Concentrations (higher acetate and butyrate, P = 0.002 and 0.004, respectively) and molar proportions (higher valerate, P = 0.035) of VFA were affected only by fiber source; however, protein source and fiber source interacted to significantly influence apparent appearance rates and absorption rates of many major VFA. On a flux basis, HSBM supported significantly elevated mean disappearance of propionate (P = 0.033). This data demonstrates that time-series evaluation of fermentation dynamics, including fluid dynamics and VFA concentrations can be used to estimate apparent appearance and disappearance of VFA. Although further work is needed to confirm the alignment of these estimates with measurements of VFA supplies to the animal, this modeling approach may provide a simpler way to better understand the kinetics of rumen., (© The Author(s) 2023. The purpose of this study was to determine effect of partial or complete replacement of corn grains by dried sugar beet pulp on rumen parameters. The yellow corn was substituted by dried sugar beet pulp at 25 (D1), 50 (D2), 75 (D3), and 100% (D4). Results of chemical composition analyses indicated that DM, OM, ash and CP contents did not differ among treatments. Crude fiber content increased linearly with increased dried sugar beet pulp percentage in rations, with significant differences in D2, D3 and D4. Content of NDF was significantly higher in all experimental groups when compared with control group, whereas non-fibrous carbohydrates content decreased in all groups as the effect of corn grains replacement by dried sugar beet pulp. Complete substitution of yellow corn by sugar dried beet pulp in D4 significantly increased number of bacteria. D3 and D4 diets resulted in higher (P<0.001) concentration of Holotrichs. The ratio of acetate to propionate increased linearly with inclusion of dried sugar beet in the diet, however statistically significant differences were found only in D4. On basis of presented data, it could be concluded that yellow corn could be partially of fully substituted by dried sugar beet pulp without negative impact on rumen parameters including dry matter digestibility. To determine the digestibility variability of beet pulps (BP) in the nutritional value of diets for fattening rabbits, the substitution of 20 % of a control feed with BP from five different origins was evaluated. Rabbits of 42 days of age and 1.49 ± 0.208 kg of weight were used, housed in individual cages and with ad libitum feeding. The digestibility of feed components was determined by the conventional in vivo method of total fecal collection. The digestibility of each of beet pulps was determined by the substitution method. There was no effect of the substitution of components of the control feed with 20 % of BP from different sources in the voluntary intake of rabbits (P> 0.05). The inclusion of BP in diets increases the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, gross energy and all fibrous fractions, and decreases the digestibility of crude protein. However, the effect was more or less important depending on the origin of BP (P <0.05), especially on the digestibility of all fibrous fractions, being the BP collected in summer the one with the highest digestibility. The origin of the BP also affected its nutritional value, giving values of digestible energy between 11.8 and 14.5 MJ kg DM-1 and digestible protein between 3.8 and 6.6 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dietary fibers can influence a dog's overall health, but high concentrations of soluble dietary fibers can cause soft stools. An in vitro model could be useful to predict the rate fibers are fermented once they reach the colon. Pet food companies are constantly searching for new ingredients to differentiate their products from competitors. Miscanthus grass (MG), pea fiber (PF), and sorghum bran (SB) are novel fiber sources that could be alternatives to standards like cellulose (CE) and beet pulp (BP). The objectives of the study were to determine the effects of fiber source on organic matter disappearance (OMD), estimated organic matter disappearance (EOMD), and fermentation end-product concentrations using an in vitro fermentation procedure and dog fecal inoculum. Total dietary fiber (TDF) residues from MG, CE, BP, PF, and SB were fermented in vitro with buffered dog feces. Fecal samples were collected and maintained in anaerobic conditions until the dilution and inoculation. Test tubes containing the fibrous substrates were incubated for 4, 8, and 12 h at 39 °C. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA), OMD, and EOMD were determined for each fiber source and time point. Beet pulp had the highest OMD, EOMD, and SCFA production of all tested fiber sources (38.6% OMD, 26.2% EOMD, 2.72 mmol SCFA/g of substrate). Sorghum bran led to greater concentrations of BCFA (59.86 µmol/g of substrate) and intermediate OMD and EOMD compared to the other tested fibers. Cellulose and MG were poorly fermented with the lowest OMD, EOMD, SCFA, and BCFA compared to other fibers. Dogs can benefit from dietary fibers. Traditionally, cellulose (CE) and beet pulp (BP) have been used by pet food companies as insoluble and soluble fiber sources. Miscanthus grass (MG) is a novel fiber ingredient made from Miscanthus giganteus , a C4 grass produced for its fiber content, but it has not been evaluated for dogs. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of different fiber sources on nutrient utilization and stool consistency by dogs. Twelve Beagle dogs were fed 3 dietary treatments varying in their fiber sources (BP, CE, MG). Diets were fed for a 14-d period (9 d adaptation), fecal samples were collected (5 d total fecal collection) and scored. Nutrient digestibility was estimated using total fecal collection (TFC). Dogs fed BP diet had softer stools than dogs fed CE and MG (3.15 vs. 3.68 and 3.64, respectively). Wet fecal output was higher for dogs fed CE compared to MG, with dogs fed BP having the lowest values (254.3 g vs. 241.6 g vs. 208.5 g, respectively). Dogs fed CE and MG had lower DM digestibility than dogs fed BP (P < 0.05), dogs fed BP had lower CP digestibility compared with dogs fed MG and CE (81.4% vs. 85.5% and 85.8%, respectively). This study aims to evaluate the effects of substituting increasing concentrations of shredded beet pulp (SBP) for corn silage (CS) on nutrient intake, sorting index, intakes of particle size and nutrients, meal and rumination patterns, and chewing activity of dairy cows. Four multiparous (126 ± 13 day in milk) and 4 primiparous (121 ± 11 day in milk) Holstein cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 4 periods of 21 days. Dietary treatments were (DM basis): 16% of dietary DM as CS without SBP (0SBP); 8% CS and 8% SBP (8SBP); 4% CS and 12% SBP (12SBP); and 0% CS and 16% SBP (16SBP). We observed a reduction in the extent of sorting against long particles and medium particles but for fine particles with increasing SBP levels in the diets. The number of eating bouts per day was lesser (8.2%) in cows fed SBP diets compared with 0SBP cows and corresponded with a reduction in eating time per d across treatments. The number of ruminating bouts per day was similar across diets (16.8 bouts/day), but substituting SBP for CS in the diets tended to decrease linearly ruminating bout length (5 min/bout) and tended to increase ruminating bout interval (8 min/day). Eating, ruminating and total chewing time when expressed as minutes per kilogram of forage NDF intake and peNDF > 8 intake increased when SBP was substituted for CS in the diets. Primiparous cows had greater ruminating time (57 m/day) and total chewing time (73 min/day), eating rate (0.01 kg of DM/min) compared with multiparous cows. Also, increasing forage NDF and peNDF>8, >8‐mm DM intakes are effective means of stimulating ruminating and chewing activities. This study examined the feeding effects of wheat straw (WS) and beet pulp (BP) substituted for corn silage (CS) and alfalfa hay (AH) based on forage 30-h undigested neutral detergent fiber (uNDF 30) on lactation performance in high-producing dairy cows. Twelve multiparous (body weight = 611 ± 31 kg, days in milk = 97 ± 13; 51 ± 3 kg/d of milk; mean ± standard error) Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 28-d periods. Three treatments were established by substituting WS for CS and AH such that the concentration of forage uNDF 30 in all diets was the same. The treatments were (1) 0% forage uNDF 30 from WS (WS0; control), (2) 50% forage uNDF 30 from WS (WS50), and (3) 100% forage uNDF 30 from WS (WS100). Beet pulp was added in the straw diets to achieve similar dietary neutral detergent fiber digestibility after 30-h incubation (NDFD 30). The 3 diets were similar in forage uNDF 30 (14% of dry matter), total uNDF 30 (∼18.5% of dry matter), and NDFD 30 (approximately 42% of neutral detergent fiber). The substitution of WS and BP for AH and CS decreased the proportion of forage (40, 31, and 22.3% of dry matter) and forage neutral detergent fiber (21.2, 19.7, and 18.3% of dry matter) for WS0, WS50, and WS100, respectively, in the diet. However, the substitution linearly increased mean rumen pH (5.90, 6.09, and 6.28 for WS0, WS50, and WS100, respectively), digestibility of nutrients, and selection for long particles of diets without affecting dry matter intake. The substitution also linearly increased cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen concentration in the blood. Milk fat percentage, fat production, fat:protein ratio, and milk urea nitrogen increased linearly when treatments changed from WS0 to WS100, whereas the production of energy-corrected milk (ECM) was not affected by the treatments. Milk yield and milk protein yield were affected in a curvilinear manner and were lower in WS100 than other treatments. The efficiency of ECM production linearly increased in the diet with higher inclusion of WS and BP substitution in the diet (1.66, 1.70, and 1.72 for WS0, WS50, and WS100, respectively), but body weight, body weight change, and backfat thickness of cows were not different among treatments. In conclusion, the substitution of WS and BP for CS and AH with fixed uNDF 30 improved feed efficiency and rumen pH, decreased milk and protein yield, and did not affect ECM yield. We examined the effect of replacing corn silage (CS) with reconstituted alfalfa hay (RAH) or reconstituted beet pulp (RBP) in the starter diets on feeding behavior, sorting, and health criteria using 54 neonatal female Holstein calves that were assigned randomly to 3 groups receiving starter diets containing CS (10% on a dry matter basis), RAH, or RBP. The starter diets had the same nutrient composition and moisture level but differed in particle size distribution. Calves fed CS tended to have a lower intermeal interval compared with calves fed RAH before weaning; however, meal frequency and duration, eating rate, and meal size were not affected by treatment before and after weaning, which resulted in no changes in feed intake and time spent eating. Rumination frequency was higher for calves fed CS than for calves fed RAH or RBP after weaning. Feeding RBP decreased rumination duration compared with CS and RAH after weaning; however, calves fed RBP had a higher rumination bout interval compared with calves fed CS. Calves fed CS spent more time ruminating compared with calves fed RAH or RBP after weaning. Feeding CS tended to decrease and decreased time devoted to standing and lying, respectively, compared with calves fed RBP; however, calves fed RBP tended to spend more time on nonnutritive oral behaviors compared with calves fed RAH. Calves fed CS sorted against particles retained on the 8-mm sieve of the Penn State Particle Separator (PSPS) and for particles retained on the 1.18-mm sieve of the PSPS. Feeding RAH increased sorting for particles retained on the 8- and 1.18-mm sieves of the PSPS. Calves fed RBP sorted only for particles retained on the 1.18-mm sieve of the PSPS. Calves fed RBP tended to be more susceptible to developing pneumonia compared with calves fed CS or RAH; however, frequency and duration of diarrhea and pneumonia or number of days needed to medicate the diseases were unchanged across treatment groups. Initial (d 3) blood total protein concentration was similar (6.51 g/dL) across treatment groups. Overall, replacing CS with RAH or RBP did not affect time devoted to eating and feed intake due to no significant changes in meal size or intermeal interval before and after weaning. Calves showed feed sorting at the extent to which they balanced intake of nutrients and met their nutritional needs.
