1. 1150 year long ice core record of the Ross Sea Polynya, Antarctica

Abstract

Knowledge of the past behavior of Antarctic polynyas such as the Ross and Weddell Seas contributes to the understanding of biological productivity, sea ice production, katabatic and Southern Hemisphere Westerly (SHW) wind strength, Antarctic bottom water (ABW) formation, and marine CO2 sequestration. Previous studies link barium (Ba) marine sedimentation to polynya primary productivity (Bonn et al., 1998; McManus et al., 2002; Pirrung et al., 2008), polynya area to katabatic wind strength and proximal cyclones (Bromwich et al., 1998; Drucker et al., 2011), and highlight the influence of Ross Ice Shelf calving event effects on the Ross Sea Polynya (RSP) (Rhodes et al., 2009). Here we use the RICE ice core, located just 120 km from the Ross Ice Shelf front to capture 1150 years of RSP behavior. We link atmospheric Ba fluctuations to Ba marine sedimentation in the summer Ross Sea Polynya, creating the first deep ice core based RSP proxy. RSP area is currently the smallest ever observed over our 1150-year record, and varied throughout the Little Ice Age with fluctuations in Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) strength related with Ross Sea cyclones. Past RSP reconstructions allow us to predict future responses of RSP area to future climate change, which is of special interest considering the recent disappearance of the Weddell Sea Polynya in response to anthropogenic forcing (de Lavergne et al., 2014)., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The Climate Change Institute W. M. Keck Laser Ice Facility laser ablation inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) yields a sample every 121 micrometers, a resolution on the scale of ice crystal triple junctions and grain boundaries in ice cores. Recent publications suggest that these features can allow amplification of impurity concentrations, and allow migration through veins potentially obscuring climate signals preserved in polar ice. LA-ICP-MS data reveal that such features modify these signals by less than 6% in the case of Na, Ca, and Fe based on the examination of GISP2 ice deposited at the beginning of the Holocene., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract. High-resolution, well-dated climate archives provide anopportunity to investigate the dynamic interactions of climate patternsrelevant for future projections. Here, we present data from a new, annuallydated ice core record from the eastern Ross Sea, named the Roosevelt IslandClimate Evolution (RICE) ice core. Comparison of this record with climatereanalysis data for the 1979–2012 interval shows that RICE reliably capturestemperature and snow precipitation variability in the region. Trends over thepast 2700 years in RICE are shown to be distinct from those in WestAntarctica and the western Ross Sea captured by other ice cores. For most ofthis interval, the eastern Ross Sea was warming (or showing isotopicenrichment for other reasons), with increased snow accumulation and perhapsdecreased sea ice concentration. However, West Antarctica cooled and thewestern Ross Sea showed no significant isotope temperature trend. Thispattern here is referred to as the Ross Sea Dipole. Notably, during theLittle Ice Age, West Antarctica and the western Ross Sea experienced colderthan average temperatures, while the eastern Ross Sea underwent a period ofwarming or increased isotopic enrichment. From the 17th century onwards, thisdipole relationship changed. All three regions show current warming, withsnow accumulation declining in West Antarctica and the eastern Ross Sea butincreasing in the western Ross Sea. We interpret this pattern as reflectingan increase in sea ice in the eastern Ross Sea with perhaps the establishmentof a modern Roosevelt Island polynya as a local moisture source for RICE.

Here, we present data from a new, annually-dated ice core record from the eastern Ross Sea. Comparison of the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core records with climate reanalysis data for the 1979–2012 calibration period shows that RICE records reliably capture temperature and snow precipitation variability of the region. RICE is compared with data from West Antarctica (West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide Ice Core) and the western (Talos Dome) and eastern (Siple Dome) Ross Sea. For most of the past 2,700 years, the eastern Ross Sea was warming with perhaps increased snow accumulation and decreased sea ice extent. However, West Antarctica cooled whereas the western Ross Sea showed no significant temperature trend. From the 17th Century onwards, this relationship changes. All three regions now show signs of warming, with snow accumulation declining in West Antarctica and the eastern Ross Sea, but increasing in the western Ross Sea. Analysis of decadal to centennial-scale climate variability superimposed on the longer term trend reveal that periods characterised by opposing temperature trends between the Eastern and Western Ross Sea have occurred since the 3rd Century but are masked by longer-term trends. This pattern here is referred to as the Ross Sea Dipole, caused by a sensitive response of the region to dynamic interactions of the Southern Annual Mode and tropical forcings.

12. Metabolism of triacetin-derived acetate in dogs

Abstract

Triacetin is a water-soluble triglyceride that may have a role as a parenteral nutrient. In the present study triacetin was administered intravenously to mongrel dogs (n = 10) 2 wk after surgical placement of blood-sampling catheters in the aorta and in the portal, hepatic, renal, and femoral veins. [1-[sup.14]C]acetate was infused to allow quantification of organ uptake of acetate as well as systemic turnover and oxidation. Systemic acetate turnover accounted for [nearly equal to] 70% of triacetin-derived acetate, assuming complete hydrolysis of the triglyceride. Approximately 80% of systemic acetate uptake was rapidly oxidized. Significant acetate uptake was demonstrated in all tissues (liver, 559 [+ or -] 68; intestine, 342 [+ or -] 23; hindlimb, 89 [+ or -] 7; and kidney, 330 [+ or -] 37 [mu]mol/min). In conclusion, during intravenous administration in dogs, the majority of infused triacetin undergoes intravascular hydrolysis, and the majority of the resulting acetate is oxidized. Thus, energy in the form of short-chain fatty acids can be delivered to a resting gut via intravenous infusion of a short-chain triglyceride. Am J Clin Nutr 1993;58:908-11.
