Optical properties of InxGa1-xAs films grown on GaAs substrates by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy were investigated. Spectral reflectance (SR) and photoreflectance (PR) at room temperature and near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) at 10K were performed. SR signals in the range of 200-1700nm provided the x-dependence of the critical point energies E1, E1+Δ1 and E2. Furthermore, band-gap and spin-orbit splitting energies, as well as their broadening parameters were determined from PR spectra and studied as function of In composition ranging from 0 to 0.37. On the other hand, the origins of luminescence bands observed in PL spectra were revealed. A redshift of 16meV/%In in the band-to-band transition was obtained. All results issued from different characterizations tools are correlated and compared to the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In x Ga1−x As/GaAs pseudomorphic structures were grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Reciprocal space mapping were recorded in the vicinity of (004) and (115) nodes using high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) in order to determine strain tensor components, indium compositions and thicknesses of alloys. Near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) was performed at 10K. The impact of strain on PL response was revealed by peak energy positions and line width. In addition, valence-band splitting (VBS) and the shift of the heavy-hole were measured. Besides, photoreflectance (PR) at room temperature was useful to establish experimentally the dependence of VBS and band energy shifts (E 0 and E 0+∆ 0) on elastic strain due to lattice mismatches. Other parameters such as the internal electric-field and the electro-optical energy were determined from Franz–Keldysh oscillations analysis. Good correlation between the results obtained from all investigated techniques and theoretical predictions was confirmed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Right Ventricle (RV) is currently recognised to be a significant and important prognostic factor for various pathologies. Its assessment is made possible using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI) short-axis slices. Yet, due to the challenging issues of this cavity, radiologists still perform its delineation manually, which is tedious, laborious, and time-consuming. Therefore, to automatically tackle the RV segmentation issues, Deep-Learning (DL) techniques seem to be the axis of the most recent promising approaches. Along with its potential at dealing with shape variations, DL techniques highly requires a large number of labelled images to avoid over-fitting. Subsequently, with the produced large amounts of data in the medical industry, preparing annotated datasets manually is still time-consuming, and requires high skills to be accomplished. To benefit from a significant number of labelled and unlabelled CMRI images, a Deep-Active-Learning (DAL) approach is proposed in this paper to segment the RV. Thus, three main steps are distinguished. First, a personalised labelled dataset is gathered and augmented to allow initial learning. Secondly, a U-Net based architecture is modified towards efficient initial accuracy. Finally, a two-level uncertainty estimation technique is settled to enable the selection of complementary unlabelled data. The proposed pipeline is enhanced with a customised postprocessing step, in which epistemic uncertainty and Dense Conditional Random Fields are used. The proposed approach is tested on 791 images gathered from 32 public patients and 1230 images of 50 custom subjects. Abstract: A 71-year-old woman with a history of back pain and recent weight loss presented to the emergency department with hematuria. A CT scan was performed and showed left retroperitoneal mass with left renal vein thrombus extended to the vena cava. Tumor biopsy revealed plasmablastic lymphoma. Staging with 18F-FDG PET/CT scan was performed and revealed pulmonary, hepatic, and left supraclavicular lymph node extension. The left retroperitoneal mass showed intense FDG uptake and was associated with widespread tumor thrombus in the peripheral abdominal veins. The segmentation of the retinal vascular tree presents a major step for detecting ocular pathologies. The clinical context expects higher segmentation performance with a reduced processing time. For higher accurate segmentation, several automated methods have been based on Deep Learning (DL) networks. However, the used convolutional layers bring to a higher computational complexity and so for execution times. For such need, this work presents a new DL based method for retinal vessel tree segmentation. Our main contribution consists in suggesting a new U-form DL architecture using lightweight convolution blocks in order to preserve a higher segmentation performance while reducing the computational complexity. As a second main contribution, preprocessing and data augmentation steps are proposed with respect to the retinal image and blood vessel characteristics. The proposed method is tested on DRIVE and STARE databases, which can achieve a better trade-off between the retinal blood vessel detection rate and the detection time with average accuracy of 0.978 and 0.98 in 0.59 s and 0.48 s per fundus image on GPU NVIDIA GTX 980 platforms, respectively for DRIVE and STARE database fundus images., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Data are limited in developing countries regarding the clinicopathologic features and response to therapy of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the era of imatinib (IM). The objective of this study is to report on the clinicoepidemiologic features of CML in Tunisia, to evaluate the long-term outcome of patients in chronic (CP) or accelerated phase (AP) treated with IM 400 mg daily as frontline therapy, and to determine imatinib's efficacy and safety. From October 2002 to December 2014, 410 CML patients were treated with IM in six Tunisian departments of hematology. Response (hematologic, cytogenetic, and molecular responses) and outcome-overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS), and progression-free survival (PFS)-were evaluated. The following prognostic factors were analyzed for their impact on the European leukemia net (ELN) response, OS, EFS, and PFS at 5 years: age, sex, leukocyte count, Sokal score, European Treatment and Outcome Study (EUTOS) score, CML phase, time to starting IM, and impact of adverse events. The median age was 45 years (3-85 years). Two hundred ten (51.2%) patients were male. Splenomegaly was present in 322 of the 410 (79%). Additional cytogenetic abnormalities were encountered in 25 (6.3%) patients. At diagnosis, 379 (92.4%) patients were in CP, 31 (7.6%) were in AP. The Sokal risk was low in 87 (22.5%), intermediate in 138 (35.7%), and high in 164 patients (41.9%). The EUTOS risk was low in 217 (74%), and high in 77 (26%) patients. The rates of cumulative complete cytogenetic response (CCyR), major molecular response (MMR), and molecular response 4/5 log (MR4.5) in CP/AP-CML patients were 72, 68.4, and 46.4%, respectively. The median time to reach CCyR, MMR, and MR4.5 was 6 months (3-51), 18 months (3-72), and 24 months (3-100), respectively. According to the ELN criteria, optimal, suboptimal response, and failure were noted in 206 (51.8%), 61 (15.3%), and 125 (31.4%) patients, respectively. Five-year event-free survival (EFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were 81, 90, and 90%, respectively. By multivariate analysis, AP, high EUTOS risk, and baseline WBC ≥ 150G/l remained independent predictive factors of non-optimal response to IM. The adverse events (AE) of IM were moderate and tolerable. With the caveats that the monitoring of the disease was not optimal, response rates were similar to those reported in previous studies. It is clear to us that improvements should be made in treatment of AP-CML and high Sokal risk group of CP-CML. The frontline use of second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) is expected to improve the results of the first-line treatment of these high-risk Tunisian patients, but cost and accessibility of this therapy remain the problems in developing countries.

Infectious lymph nodes mimicking lymphoma is challenging for accurate staging. Although 18 F-FDG is a nonspecific tracer accumulating not only in tumor cells but also in inflammatory tissues, the metabolic features and uptake kinetics give valuable information: 18 F-FDG PET/CT appears as a useful problem solver tool in ambiguous situation.

Hearing loss is the most frequent sensory disorder. It affects 3 in 1000 newborns. It is genetically heterogeneous with 60 causally-related genes identified to date. Mutations in GJB2 gene account for half of all cases of non-syndromic deafness. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of GJB2 allele variants in Tunisia. In this study, we screened 138 patients with congenital hearing loss belonging to 131 families originating from different parts of Tunisia for mutations in GJB2 gene. GJB2 mutations were found in 39% of families (51/131). The most common mutation was c.35delG accounting for 35% of all cases (46/131). The second most frequent mutation was p.E47X present in 3.8% of families. Four identified mutations in our cohort have not been reported in Tunisia; p.V37I, c.235delC, p.G130A and the splice site mutation IVS1+1G>A (0.76%). These previously described mutations were detected only in families originating from Northern and not from other geographical regions in Tunisia. In conclusion we have confirmed the high frequency of c.35delG in Tunisia which represents 85.4% of all GJB2 mutant alleles. We have also extended the mutational spectrum of GJB2 gene in Tunisia and revealed a more pronounced allelic heterogeneity in the North compared to the rest of the country., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma is a neoplasia consisting of myeloid precursors in an extramedullary site. Its appearance in chronic myeloid leukaemia is unusual. We report a case of ovary tumor associated with chronic myeloid leukaemia in chronic phase.
