Accurate measurement of bedload is challenging, considering its spatial and temporal variability. Various indirect acoustic techniques are often used for estimating the bedload rate and total bedload mass. Estimating the grain size distribution for a bedload event of relatively short duration, taking the smaller bedload particles into account, is difficult. In the current study, an impact plate with two sensors, namely, an accelerometer and a geophone, is tested in a laboratory flume. Available bedload grains are sorted into different grain size classes, and two sets of experiments are conducted. Single-grain/multigrain particles and mixed-grain particles are considered in the single-class and multiclass experiments, respectively. Three different grain mixtures with variable fineness are fed to the plate in the mixed-grain experiment. The present setup can detect bedload grains from 2.36 to about 150 mm, which is an improvement over other indirect methods. A hybrid analysis methodology to predict the grain size distribution using signals from both sensors is developed. Riverbeds often fine downstream, with a gravel‐bedded reach, a relatively abrupt gravel‐sand transition (GST), and a sand‐bedded reach. Underlying this behavior, bed grain size distributions are often bimodal, with a relative paucity (gap) around the range 1–5 mm. There is no general morphodynamic model capable of producing the grain size gap and gravel‐sand transition autogenically from a unimodal sediment supply. Here we use a one‐dimensional morphodynamic model including size‐specific bedload and suspended load transport, to show that bimodality readily evolves autogenically even under unimodal sediment feed. A GST forms when we include a floodplain width that abruptly increases at some point. Upstream of the transition, non‐gap gravel ceases to move and gap sediment is preferentially transported. At the transition, non‐gap sand rapidly deposits from suspension, enhancing gap sediment mobility and diluting its presence on the bed. Plain Language Summary: The bed surface layer of many rivers is a mixture of sand and gravel. This mixture is described by the probability distribution of grain sizes, and in particular by the median size. Consider the long profile of such a river. Surface median size commonly becomes finer downstream, but often changes abruptly from a value above 5 mm to a value below 1 mm over a short reach. The range 1–5 mm is termed "gap sediment." Here we explain how this abrupt change evolves, even when there is no deficit of gap sediment supplied to the reach, and even though particle abrasion is not included. The grain size distribution autogenically develops two peaks, one in the sand range and one in the gravel range above 5 mm. When abrupt floodplain widening is included, the gravel peak is stronger in the upper reach and the sand peak is stronger in the lower reach, leading to a relatively abrupt gravel‐sand transition. Gap sediment can be diluted both upstream and downstream by a combination of effects due to bedload and suspended load, so that it dominates nowhere in the grain size distribution. Gravel replenishment is one existing solution for restoring riverbeds below dams. Prediction of erosion processes is crucial for river management planning of efficient replenishment. This study investigates the capacity of a large-scale, two-dimensional morphodynamic model to reproduce berm erosion and sediment wave propagation. The model enables quantification of the efficiency of several management scenarios according to berm geometry, location and sediment supply condition (dam closed or not during floods). Results show that replenishment efficiency is strongly dependent on the berm geometry and sediment supply. Berms should be located as close as possible to the low-flow channel and be as long as possible. Desynchronization between hydrographs and sedigraphs could be responsible for propagating sediment deficit which reduces the efficiency of replenishment. Recent theoretical models and field observations suggest that fluvial bedload flux can be estimated from seismic energy measured within appropriate frequency bands. We present an application of the Tsai et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.1029/2011gl050255) bedload seismic model to an ephemeral channel located in the semi‐arid southwestern US and incorporate modifications to better estimate bedload flux in this environment. To test the model, we collected streambank seismic signals and directly measured bedload flux during four flash‐floods. Bedload predictions calculated by inversion from the Tsai model underestimated bedload flux observations by one‐to‐two orders of magnitude at low stages. However, model predictions were better for moderate flow depths (>50 cm), where saltation is expected to dominate bedload transport. We explored three differences between the model assumptions and our field conditions: (a) rolling and sliding particles have different impact frequencies than saltating particles; (b) the velocity and angle of impact of rolling particles onto the riverbed differ; and (c) the fine‐grained alluvial character of this and similar riverbeds leads to inelastic impacts, as opposed to the originally conceptualized elastic impacts onto rigid bedrock. We modified the original model to assume inelastic bed impacts and to incorporate rolling and sliding by adjusting the statistical distributions of bedload impact frequency, velocity, and angle. Our modified "multiple‐transport‐mode bedload seismic model" decreased error relative to observations to less than one order of magnitude across all measured flow conditions. Further investigations in other environmental settings are required to demonstrate the robustness and general applicability of the model. We modified the original model to better represent alluvial rivers by adding a representation of rolling and sliding particles to the hopping particles already considered in the physics of seismic waves generated by bedload transport. Our modified "multi‐mode bedload seismic model" yields a better result compared to the original Tsai et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.1029/2011gl050255) model in our test river. The modified model is not only applicable for the ephemeral channels on which this study is focused but also is potentially applicable to a wide range of river conditions in different environmental settings. Bedload transport is a natural process that strongly affects the Earth's surface system. An important component of quantifying bedload transport flux and establishing early warning systems is the identification of the onset of bedload motion. Bedload transport can be monitored with high temporal resolution using passive acoustic methods, for example, hydrophones. Yet, an efficient method for identifying the onset of bedload transport from long‐term continuous acoustic data is still lacking. Benford's Law defines a probability distribution of the first‐digit of data sets and has been used to identify anomalies. Here, we apply Benford's law to continuous acoustic recordings from Baiyang hydrometric station, a tributary of Liwu River, Taroko National Park, Taiwan at the frequency of 32 kHz from stationary hydrophones deployed for 3 years since 2019. We construct a workflow to parse sound combinations of bedload transportation and analyze them in the context of hydrometric sensing constraining the onset, and recession of bedload transport. We identified three separate sound classes in the data related to the noise produced by the motion of pebbles, water flow, and air. We identify two bedload transport events that lasted 17 and 45 hr, respectively, covering about 0.35% of the total recorded time. The workflow could be transferred to other different catchments, events, or data sets. Due to the influence of instrument and background noise on the regularity of the residuals of the first‐digit, we recommend identifying the first‐digit distribution of the background noise and ruling it out before implementing this workflow. Flash floods in ephemeral streams are rare, short and difficult to forecast and thus to monitor. During these events, bedload transport reaches very high rates and most sediment transport occurs within a limited number of hours during the course of a year. Because monitoring of bedload in ephemeral rivers is challenging, here we present the results of a series of flume experiments designed to simulate short, flashy floods. Since most flume experiments usually involve single events, here we add to existing evidence by testing the effects of sequences of multiple floods in rapid succession. The flume is 10 m long, 0.3 m wide and 0.5 m deep. Two bed sediment mixtures (well sorted and poorly sorted) with similar median grain size but a different standard deviation were used. Bedload was monitored continuously during each hydrograph, but no sediment was fed. The flume experiments used six triangular hydrographs with peak flows ranging from 0.0147 to 0.02 m3 s − 1 and durations ranging from 150 to 400 s. Results indicate that the sediment transport rate decreases progressively from the first to the third hydrograph, and that this pattern is consistent for all permutations of peak discharge and flood duration. In all of the runs, the sediment transport rate at a specified flow was higher during the rising limb than the falling limb of the hydrograph, indicating clockwise hysteresis. Furthermore, in the subsequent repetitions of the same hydrograph, the degree of hysteresis generally diminishes in magnitude from the first to the last repetition for all the experiments, irrespective of their magnitude and duration. River channels, riparian and floodplain forms and dynamics are all influenced strongly by biological processes. However, the influence of macroinvertebrates on entrainment and transport of river sediments remains poorly understood. We use an energy‐based approach to explore the capacity of benthic animals to move surficial, gravel‐bed particles in field and laboratory settings and use the results to assess the relative significance of biological and physical benthic processes. Our results showed that in 11 British gravel‐bed rivers, the maximum energy content (i.e., calorific content) of macroinvertebrate communities generally matched the flow energy associated with median discharges and, at multiple sites, exceeded that of the 10‐year return interval flood. A series of laboratory experiments used to estimate the minimum energy expended by signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) when performing geomorphic work established that crayfish move gravel particles at energy levels below that expected of the flow, complicating direct comparisons of the capacity for macroinvertebrates and fluvial flows to influence bed mobility. Our findings suggest that the influence of macroinvertebrate communities in either promoting or suppressing, the mobilisation of the bed may be large compared to equivalent values of fluvial energy. Based on these findings, we conclude that in the gravel‐bed rivers studied, the macroinvertebrate community's potential to perform geomorphic work matches or exceeds the stream power during most of the year. Although our study examined biological and fluvial energy systems separately, it is important to recognise that in nature, these systems are highly interactive. Bedload transport can fluctuate considerably over relatively short periods of time and for a given quasi‐constant flow rate. What are the implications of replacing the fluctuating signal with a smoothed signal when calculating bedload transport using averaged values, as is common practice? This question was investigated with the BedloadR code, which allows 1D bedload calculation as well as Monte Carlo simulations using a new data set collected in the Severaisse River (French Ecrins massif). Four bedload equations (Camenen & Larson, 2005, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecss.2004.10.019; Meyer‐Peter & Mueller, 1948; Parker, 1990, https://doi.org/10.1080/00221689009499058; Recking, 2013a, https://doi.org/10.1061/(asce)hy.1943‐7900.0000653) were selected for their performance relative to the measured bedload (except for and Meyer‐Peter and Mueller) and because each equation has a different mathematical form and degree of nonlinearity. They were used in a Monte Carlo approach, with input probability distributions fitted to the measured river width, slope, bed grain‐size distribution, and to the associated (computed) Shields stress. The results show that accounting for natural variability in the calculation reproduces bedload fluctuations well. But overall, when calculating the bedload volume transported by a flow event, accounting for variability systematically leads to higher estimated volumes (of the order of 20%) than those obtained with a deterministic approach using average input parameters. This is a direct consequence of the nonlinearity of the equations. This paper presents a review of cross-shore sediment transport for non-cohesive sediments in the coastal zone. The principles of sediment incipient motion are introduced. Formulations for the estimation of bedload transport are presented, for currents and combined waves and current flows. A method to consider the effect of sediment heterogeneity on transport, using the hiding–exposure coefficient and hindrance factor, is depicted. We calibrated an acoustic pipe microphone system to monitor bedload flux in a sandy, gravel‐bed ephemeral channel. Ours is a first attempt to test the limit of an acoustic surrogate bedload system in a channel with a high content of sand. Calibrations varied in quality; significant data subsetting was required to achieve R2 values >0.75. Several data quality issues had to be addressed: (1) apparent pulses, which occur when a sensor records an impulse from sediment impacting the surrounding substrate rather than directly impacting the sensor, were frequent, especially at higher signal amplifications. (2) The impact sensors were frequently covered by gravel sheets. This prompted the development of a cover detection protocol that rejected part of the impact sensor record when at least one sensor was partially or fully covered. (3) Because of the lack of sensor sensitivity to impacts of sand‐sized particles, which was anticipated, and the considerable sand component of bedload in this channel, a grain size‐limited bedload flux was estimated. This was accomplished by sampling the bedload captured by slot samplers and evaluating the variation of grain size with increasing flow strength. This considerably improved the results when compared to attempts at estimating the flux of the entire distribution of grain sizes. This calibration is a successful first attempt, though the impact sensors required several site‐specific calibration steps. A universal set of equations using impact sensors to estimate bedload transport of fine‐gravel with a large content of sand remains elusive. Notwithstanding, our study demonstrates the utility of impact sensor data, producing relatively low root mean square errors that are independent of measurements of flow strength (i.e. discharge). These tools will be particularly useful in settings that would benefit from new methodologies for estimating bedload transport in sand‐rich gravel‐bed rivers, such as the American desert Southwest. There is abundant evidence from fluvial landforms and deposits that Mars had rivers that actively transported sediment and shaped its surface. Sediment transport equations are playing a key role in quantifying river processes from these observations, which continue to increase in quality and quantity. In this study, we review sediment transport equations developed on Earth and isolate the effect of gravity for the case of an alluvial channel. We compare 33 formulas used to calculate the sediment transport rate, under transport‐limited conditions, for grain sizes that range from silt to boulders and a lognormal sediment distribution. Results indicate that for a given discharge, channel morphology and grain size, the lower gravity on Mars compared to Earth results in: (a) larger grains mobilized on Mars and transported in suspension, and (b) larger suspended sediment transport rates on Mars and therefore larger total transport rates. Importantly, the effect of gravity is different for bed load and suspended load, with nonlinearity at the bed load‐suspended load transition zone. Therefore, typical total‐load transport relations that do not distinguish between bedload and suspended load are not appropriate for other planets as they simplify the effect of gravity. Gravity‐driven differences in fluvial sediment transport should produce differences in sediment sorting, morphology and stratigraphy between Earth and Mars. Additionally, our results show how Earth‐derived fluvial sediment transport theory can be applied beyond Mars to other planets and moons. How does gravity affect sediment transport and the landforms created by water? In this study, we isolate the effect of gravity on sediment transport by water with an analytical river model. We used 32 sediment transport formulas to compare sediment transport rates on Earth and Mars for the same conditions except gravity. The results show that larger grains are picked up by the flow on Mars and the transport rate of sediment traveling in suspension is higher, and therefore total transport as well. Because grains transported near and on the bed are less affected than the grains in suspension, the effect of gravity varies with the way of transport and hence grain size. Therefore, gravity‐driven differences in sediment transport by water should produce differences in sediment sorting, morphology and stratigraphy between Earth and Mars. Predicting transport rates is difficult for the morphological features of marine, river, and coastal ecosystems. To design a model bed load sediment transport rate along with the surface layer, a mesh-based numerical method is used, and for the sediment transport the governing equations are employed and depth-averaged is used to create open channel flow and in three-dimensional horizontal space the evaluation is performed. By utilizing the governing equations, the open channel flow discretization and the numerical hydrodynamic model of sediment transport rate are calculated, and in the flow channel by using the solution method the settling velocity is determined. The complex issues involved nonlinear equations for the numerical modelling with solution methodology. The chicken swarm optimization algorithm is revealed by multi-objective metaheuristics optimization, and a better outcome is acquired by optimization. Finally, if polygonal mesh modelling is used in the diversion flow channel and curved bend channel, several experimental models were employed in the model experiments. A numerical measured and improved model is used to estimate the results in comparison, and the optimally developed model forecast rates with accuracy. In some open-channel flows such as reservoirs and rivers, the struggling flow and bed load sediment transport were dealt with in this model. Based on the results obtained, the proposed technique demonstrates significant improvements in both accuracy and prediction performance compared to the existing techniques. The proposed technique achieves an accuracy of 96.87%, outperforming the BCNN technique with an accuracy of 89.77% and the H-ANN-FA technique with an accuracy of 84.65%. Moreover, the proposed technique exhibits a lower RMSE value of 0.12, indicating a substantial reduction in the average deviation between predicted and observed values. Based on the NSE and R2 results, the proposed technique demonstrates remarkable improvements in prediction accuracy compared to the other techniques. The proposed technique achieves an NSE value of 0.998 and R2 value of 0.99, compared to the existing technique with an improvement of 46.47% and 11.24%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Confluences are dynamic morphological nodes in all river networks. In mountain regions, they are influenced by hydraulic and sedimentary processes occurring in steep channels during extreme events in small watersheds. Sediment transport in the tributary channel and aggradation in the confluence can be massive, potentially causing overbank flooding and sedimentation into adjacent settlement areas. Previous works dealing with confluences have been mainly focused on lowland regions, or if focused on mountain areas, the sediment concentrations and channel gradients were largely under-representative of mountain river conditions. The presented work contributes to filling this research gap with 45 experiments using a large-scale physical model. Geometric model parameters, applied grain size distribution, and the considered discharges represent the conditions at 135 confluences in South Tyrol (Italy) and Tyrol (Austria). The experimental program allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of (i) the confluence angle, (ii) the tributary gradient, (iii) the channel discharges, and (iv) the tributary sediment concentration. Results indicate, in contrast to most research dealing with confluences, that in the presence of intense tributary sediment supply and a small tributary to main channel discharge ratio (0.1), the confluence angle does not have a decisive effect on confluence morphology. Adjustments to the tributary channel gradient yielded the same results. A reoccurring range of depositional geomorphic units was observed where a deposition cone transitioned to a bank-attached bar. The confluence morphology and tributary channel gradient rapidly adjusted, tending towards an equilibrium state to accommodate both water discharges and the sediment load from the tributary. Statistical analyses demonstrated that confluence morphology was controlled by the combined channel discharge and the depositional or erosional extents by the sediment concentration. Applying the conclusions drawn from lowland confluence dynamics could misrepresent depositional and erosional patterns and the related flood hazard at mountain river confluences. Prediction of bedload rates in gravel-bed rivers at low-to-moderate flow conditions, where bedload movement is intermittent, remains a challenging problem. While the virtual velocity concept provides a useful approach to bedload rate estimation in the intermittent movement regime, virtual velocity estimation remains hindered by a lack of tools for predicting mean sediment resting time. As a first step toward sediment resting time estimation in gravel beds, the present study develops a semi-theoretical resting time model applicable to nonuniform gravel-sized spherical particles. The model is based on the consideration that interactions of near-bed flow with bed material lead to mobilization of individual resting particles during hydrodynamic momentum transfer events (i.e., impulses). Thus, resting time is affected by impulse magnitude and timing. The primary premise underpinning model development is that an instantaneous velocity time-series generation approach based on the velocity spectrum can be used to mimic hydrodynamic impulses and simulate resting times. Based on past findings, two model parameters are considered important to advancing resting time predictions in gravel beds. First, the relative particle size allows size-fractional resting time predictions for a nonuniform sediment mixture. Second, the hindrance coefficient accounts for hiding effects and enables resting time predictions for different bed structure types. To provide calibration and verification data, laboratory experiments documenting impulse statistics and mean resting times for a range of flow and relative particle size conditions were also performed. With the onset of winter in cold regions, border ice begins to form, impacting sediment transport rate and distribution. Understanding the effect of ice cover is crucial in regions with prolonged sub-freezing temperatures, as water bodies remain frozen for a considerable part of the year. While the existing literature includes many studies on sediment transport in open channel flow and several studies on completely ice-covered flow, there is limited research on sediment transport in partially ice-covered channels. Addressing this gap, the current study conducted laboratory experiments in a rectangular flume at the Hydraulics Research and Testing Facility, University of Manitoba, Canada. The investigation focused on examining the influence of asymmetric border ice, varying coverage ratios in asymmetric partially ice-covered flow, and changing flow strengths on bedload transport rate and distribution. Additionally, a comparison was made with symmetric partially ice-covered flow conditions. The findings indicate that the presence of asymmetric border ice indeed affected the bedload transport distribution within the channel, causing non-uniform bedload transport distribution across the channel width, with peak values concentrated in the center of the open flow section. Increased asymmetry in border ice leads to greater asymmetry in bedload transport rate distribution. Despite these pronounced differences in bedload transport rate across the channel width, the cross-section-averaged bedload transport rate could still be estimated utilizing the conventional equations, used for open channel flow, fully ice-covered flow, and symmetric partially ice-covered flow, with the effect of ice cover accounted for by incorporating an additional boundary in the calculation of the wetted perimeter, leading to adjustments in the flow strength. Flash floods in ephemeral streams are rare, short and difficult to forecast and thus to monitor. During these events, bedload transport reaches very high rates and most sediment transport occurs within a limited number of hours during the course of a year. Because monitoring of bedload in ephemeral rivers is challenging, here we present the results of a series of flume experiments designed to simulate short, flashy floods. Since most flume experiments usually involve single events, here we add to existing evidence by testing the effects of sequences of multiple floods in rapid succession. The flume is 10 m long, 0.3 m wide and 0.5 m deep. Two bed sediment mixtures (well sorted and poorly sorted) with similar median grain size but a different standard deviation were used. Bedload was monitored continuously during each hydrograph, but no sediment was fed. The flume experiments used six triangular hydrographs with peak flows ranging from 0.0147 to 0.02 m3s−1 and durations ranging from 150 to 400 s. Results indicate that the sediment transport rate decreases progressively from the first to the third hydrograph, and that this pattern is consistent for all permutations of peak discharge and flood duration. In all of the runs, the sediment transport rate at a specified flow was higher during the rising limb than the falling limb of the hydrograph, indicating clockwise hysteresis. Furthermore, in the subsequent repetitions of the same hydrograph, the degree of hysteresis generally diminishes in magnitude from the first to the last repetition for all the experiments, irrespective of their magnitude and duration.

It is important to understand the effects of ice cover on sediment transport in cold climates, where sub-freezing temperatures affect water bodies for a significant part of the year. The literature contains many studies on sediment transport in open channel flow, and several studies on sediment transport in completely ice-covered flow. There has been little or no research on sediment transport in partially ice-covered channels. In the current study, laboratory experiments were done in a rectangular flume to quantify the impact of border ice presence on the sediment transport rate. The effects of ice cover extent and changing flow strengths on sediment transport distribution also were investigated, and the results were compared to those for fully ice-covered and open channel flow. The ice coverage ratios considered were 0 (representing the open water condition), 0.25, 0.50, 0.67, and 1 (representing fully ice-covered flow). The partial ice cover was found to impact the sediment transport distribution within the channel. The effect of ice coverage extent on sediment transport distribution was more significant at lower flow strengths and became negligible at higher flow strengths. The conventional equations for sediment transport in open channel flow and fully ice-covered flow that relate the dimensionless bedload transport rate to the flow strength were found to be applicable to estimate the total cross-section-averaged bedload transport for partially ice-covered flow when modified appropriately. This paper presents a review of cross-shore sediment transport for non-cohesive sediments in the coastal zone. The principles of sediment incipient motion are introduced. Formulations for the estimation of bedload transport are presented, for currents and combined waves and current flows. A method to consider the effect of sediment heterogeneity on transport, using the hiding–exposure coefficient and hindrance factor, is depicted. Total transport resulting from bedload and transport by suspension is also addressed. New research is encouraged to fill the knowledge gap on this topic.

Evidence of the effect of unsteady flow on bedload sediment transport is meager, particularly in desert rivers, despite its scientific, environmental and engineering importance. Our study of the phenomenon was conducted in Nahal Eshtemoa, Israel, an ephemeral river located in a semi‐arid area and subjected to flash floods. During 4 years, we monitored bedload transport and contemporaneous hydraulics, focusing on two intervals during which flow changed most rapidly: (a) the arrival of flood bores over dry river beds and (b) the propagation of subsequent bores over flowing water. Monitoring involved deployment of plate microphones, video cameras, surface velocity radar and a 3D velocimeter, enabling synchronized and unique data acquisition at high temporal resolution. We hypothesized that turbulence would be considerably elevated during the arrival of a flood bore and that this would induce transient entrainment of bedload. Our results demonstrate that bedload is indeed transported by the bore front and ceases soon after the arrival of most bores, even though water depth continues to rise. Bores arriving on a dry river bed usually generate higher bedload fluxes than bores advancing over flowing water. Elevated values of shear stress, turbulent kinetic energy and water‐surface slope occur as a bore impinges but then decrease. This is likely to be the explanation for high transient rates of bedload transport. Once the threshold depth previously determined as inducing continuous bedload motion is attained (≈40 cm), transport rates rise considerably relative to those associated with the bores. This article discusses the piping erosion time, where pipes start to erode in aquifers underneath dikes and dams until they reach their critical values. The magnitude of the piping erosion time significantly determines the risk of failure of water defences. The time-scale equation is based on a sediment mass balance equation and appropriate bedload transport predictors, assuming the erosion process to be continuous. We argue that the flow is laminar for pipes in sandy aquifers and turbulent for pipes in gravel aquifers. We then account for aquifer composition in examining pipe erosion by discussing different bedload transport predictors for each flow regime. To estimate the turbulence intensity, we have used and modified the Einstein bedload transport theory. During the last 20 years, flume and field experiments have shown that grain sorting contributes to bed‐level fluctuations and bedload pulses. In this work, we propose a new analysis of these experimental data. From the flume data, we derive a model for gravel‐bed rivers where both local (bedform‐scale) slope and bedload are known to fluctuate through space and time, in the so‐called 'bedload active layer'. The model uses standard concepts and empirical tools with reach‐averaged data for the hydraulics and sediment transport. It considers a maximum slope for local armouring equal to the mean bed slope (reach scale) affected by a coefficient which expresses the difference in mobility of the coarse fraction considered alone or in a mixture. The minimum local slope for bed erosion is the mean bed slope corrected by a coefficient that depends on the armour ratio Ar (ratio of the surface to the subsurface grain diameter) and the reach‐averaged transport rate. The model is compared with a compilation of scour–fill depths measured in the field. Results suggests that the slope fluctuations in 1D flume experiments are consistent with in‐channel bed‐level fluctuations associated with scour–fill processes in the active layer. The model also suggests that although the length scale of the maximum scour depth δ is on the order of the bed surface D90, it is well explained by the product between the mean bed slope S and the active channel width W, with δ ≈ 1.4SW. For the pulse intensity, we provide a justification for the simplified squared slope equation for solid concentration C = Qs/Q ∝ S2 (with Qs the solid discharge, Q the water discharge and S the slope), which has often been used in place of standard bedload equations for modelling highly concentrated bedload transport events in mountain streams. An accurate assessment of sediment transport can assist land and resource managers in any region. The primary objective of this study was to develop a distributed hydrological model for calculating rainfall-runoff coupled with sediment transport to provide a practical method for estimating sediment transport in western Heilongjiang Province, China. The Alun River Basin, which has typical meteorological and hydrological characteristics of western Heilongjiang Province, was chosen as the study area. A sediment transport calculation module was developed based on physically based formulas for the suspended load and bedload, which was coupled with a numerical model of the physical distributed rainfall-runoff process. The model’s ability was validated by comparing the sediment sampling survey results of the particle size group distribution (PSGD) in the flow and the corresponding value of the model calculation results for a control case. The root mean square error ( RMSE ) and the mean absolute error ( MAE ) were mostly 15%. The results provide a basis for the assessment of sediment transport and the development of a numerical platform for modeling hydrological processes coupled with land surface processes in western Heilongjiang Province, China.

A volume-filtered Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of oscillatory flow over a mobile rippled bed is conducted using an Euler–Lagrange approach. The modeling is done to complement the experimental work, which shows quasi-steady state ripples in a sand bed under oscillatory flow, as observed in unsteady marine flows over sedimentary beds. Simulations approximate the experimental configuration with a sinusoidal pressure gradient driven flow and a sinusoidally shaped rippled bed of particles. The LES equations, which are volume-filtered to account for the effect of the particles, are solved on an Eulerian grid, and the particles are tracked in a Lagrangian framework. A Discrete Particle Method (DPM) is used, where the particle collisions are handled by a soft-sphere model, and the liquid and solid phases are coupled through volume fraction and momentum exchange terms. Comparison of the numerical results to the experimental data show that the LES-DPM captures the mesoscale features of the system. The simulations reproduced the large scale shedding of vortices from the ripple crests observed in experiments. Likewise, the simulations exhibited quantitative agreement between the wall-normal flow statistics, and qualitative agreement in ripple shape evolution and sand particle entrainment behavior above the fluid-bed interface. The numerical data provide insight into the formation of shear layers and eddies within the flow field above and through the ripple and their influence on the particle transport and the dilation of the ripple mobile layer thickness during an oscillatory period. The resolution of flow structures within the particle bed in the LES-DPM simulations make the framework a unique tool for investigating ripple driven sediment transport and distribution of momentum over the ripple. Bedload sediment transport in rivers can cause impacts, such as bed erosion/deposition, sandbank formation and changes in flow capacity. Bedload sampling techniques have limitations related to spatial and temporal resolution. These constraints are more relevant in rivers with dunes and high sediment transport. This paper presents a comparison between bedload transport rates estimated with direct and indirect methods in a river with sand dunes. The case study area is a stretch of the Taquari River, in Brazil. Surveys were carried out on three consecutive days, during a flood season. A SonTek M9-ADCP with HydroSurveyor capabilities activated was used to simultaneously measure bathymetry and water velocities throughout a river reach, and also to perform moving-bed tests at six verticals along a predefined cross-section. A mechanical trap (Helley–Smith) was used to collect bedload samples at the same time and positions where the moving-bed tests were performed. Sediment transport was calculated and compared following different approaches: (1) ADCP-BT (Bottom Tracking); (2) modified ISSDOTv2 method (dune tracking); (3) HelleySmith mechanical trap; (4) and five empirical equations. The results showed good agreement between the methodologies, indicating the potential of using ADCPs for hydro sedimentological studies due to the advantages of integrating bathymetry, flow velocity and bedload data. Bedload is rarely measured in Indian rivers. It is recommended that 5% of suspended load can be taken as bedload in the absence of measured bedload. The present study validates this by direct physical measurement of bedload using the Helley–Smith sampler in an ephemeral mountain stream of Gujarat, India. It was observed that, on an average, the bedload formed 3.97% of the suspended load. The measured bedload flux was 1.02 tonnes/ day. To overcome the need and dependability on actual physical bedload measurement, a bedload rating curve against specific discharge was developed to predict the bedload rate in the study reach. Few prominent existing bedload equations selected from the literature were tested against the measured bedload, which over-predicted the bedload transport rate with a discrepancy ratio greater than 2 and RMSE 2.4–48. A calibration coefficient ξ = 0.00167 was introduced in the widely used Recking (2013) equation for the study reach resulting in an improvement of the coefficient of variation as 1.92 and RMSE as 1.35. This paper introduces a method for determining spatially‐distributed, 2‐D bedload rates using repeat, high‐resolution surveys of the bed topography. As opposed to existing methods, bedform parameters and bedload rates are computed from bed elevation profiles interpolated along the local bedform velocities. The bedform velocity fields are computed applying Large‐Scale Particle Image Velocimetry, initially developed for surface velocity measurements, to pairs of successive Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The bathymetry data are interpolated along the direction of each bedform velocity and the mean height of the closest bedform is computed. The dune shape factor is also evaluated along each bedform direction of travel. The local bedload fluxes can be computed by multiplying the bedform velocity by its mean height averaged over the successive two DEMs, and they can be time‐averaged over a series of DEM pairs. This method is applied to a high‐resolution acoustical survey of an approximately 300 m long by 40 m wide reach of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon upstream from Diamond Creek, USA. The repeat period was about 6–10 min and bed elevation was interpolated every 0.25 m. The obtained results provide insight to the spatial and temporal variability of bedload rates, bedform parameters and bedload fluxes through cross‐sections. The method can be applied to other repeated acoustical surveys of river reaches provided that the space and time resolutions are high enough to capture the local movement of bedforms. River confluences have a complex flow and sedimentation pattern that have vital influences on the hydraulic and bed morphology of river reach and the surrounding area. Confluences can be observed in waterways with various situations such as live bed conditions. This condition is a hydro-morphological situation with a high densimetric Froude number, i.e., bed load transport is supplied from upstream. According to the literature review, most of the experimental studies investigate the flow pattern on the flatbed and not on the developed riverbed, or/and in the low densimetric Froude number, or/and without supplying the sediment from upstream. Therefore, in the present study for the quantification of the flow pattern under these conditions, each developed bed was fixed with the cement blanket method in the laboratory. Then, the 3D velocity was measured at specific points at the confluence. The current study was designed to understand the flow pattern corresponding to the river bed behavior in the case of large floods. It is expected that the morphological features downstream of the confluence have a different pattern than the ones in the condition described in other literature. Thus, this paper describes briefly what are the different bed features and investigates the corresponding flow pattern. The results of the flow pattern on the developed bed show that all zones at the river confluence can be observed except the point bar due to the approximate equality of the mean longitudinal velocity of the separation zone and the main channel upstream of the confluence. Moreover, results show that by increasing the bedload ratio (sediment discharge to water discharge of the main channel of upstream of the confluence) from 0 to 3 × 10−4, flow deflection to the outer bank of the channel decreased down to 45%, the stagnation equivalent area decreased down to 2.5 times, and bed shear stress decreased down to 40%. Hence, the momentum of lateral flow decreased with increasing bedload. Besides, the recovery zone occurred at a longer distance after the confluence compared to the case without bedload. Trapezoidal-shaped hydrographs are typical of anthropized rivers, as this form is generally associated with the release of water from hydropower dams. To investigate how such unnatural waves can affect bedload rate, preliminary flume experiments were performed in Krakow, Poland, looking at bedload transport rate, bed shear stress and bed morphology. In addition, close-range bed surface photogrammetry was used to investigate bed changes due to the passage of the flood wave. Three scenarios, having the same water volume but different wave magnitudes, were tested. The lowest wave showed almost no sediment transport and no visible changes in bed morphology, while higher waves changed the bed morphology, creating erosion and accumulation zones. The highest wave was characterized by an 8-shaped hysteresis of the bedload rate with a peak during the wave maximum. The lag time between the maximum bedload rate and the wave plateau was longer than expected due to zero-slope conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In mountain rivers, long‐term observations of water and sediment fluxes are crucial for understanding the dynamics of bedload fluctuations. We analyze 7 years of continuous data gathered from eight geophone plates at a monitoring station in the glacier‐fed Sulden/Solda River (South Tyrol, Italy) to estimate the bedload flux at 1‐min scale. Sixty‐five bedload samples were used to derive the calibration equations adopted to quantify the transported bedload mass. The signal power is proposed as a more effective metric than threshold‐based impulses for calculating bedload masses. Results show (a) a remarkable variability of bedload rates for the same value of flow discharge, (b) the joint effect of storm‐driven flood events and seasonal changes in sediment supply on bedload rates, and (c) the strong impact of climatic factors (i.e., temperature and snow cover) on bedload fluxes. Moderate bedload rates occurring in late spring/early summer are likely related to the mobilization of riverbed sediments, while sustained bedload transport during melt flows in July–August—corresponding to the effective bedload discharge range—is associated with the activation of glacial and proglacial sediment sources. The data set shows a complex climatic control on bedload transport at the basin scale, where precipitation, air temperature, and snow cover determine flow and glacier melting dynamics. These findings suggest how the effects of climate change in the Alps likely will lead to an increase in peak bedload rates in a context of declining annual bedload yields as melt flows will progressively reduce in the next decades. The knowledge of the bedload flux matters for both improved understanding of the ecosystem and of the effects of human activities. Measuring how much bedload is transported is difficult as particles move below the water level. In this study, we employ seismic sensors installed on the river bed to quantify bedload transported by an Alpine river originating from a glacierized area. Moving particles produce ground vibrations that are more intense when the river transports more material. We found that the intensity of bedload measured by this "seismic noise" is extremely variable during the year and controlled by weather conditions. In particular, the river can rapidly increase the transport of sediments during high runoff peaks induced by glacier melt and summer thunderstorms. These findings are particularly relevant in the context of ongoing global warming that is dramatically impacting mountain areas where newly exposed stream reaches are emerging from the rapidly melting glaciers. A thorough understanding of fluvial sediment transport is critical to addressing many environmental concerns such as exacerbated flooding, degradation of aquatic habitat, excess nutrients, and the economic challenges of restoring aquatic systems. Fluvial sediment samples are integral for addressing these environmental concerns but cannot be collected at every river and time of interest. Therefore, to gain a better understanding for rivers where direct measurements have not been made, extreme gradient boosting machine learning (ML) models were developed and trained to predict suspended sediment and bedload from sampling data collected in Minnesota, United States (U.S.), by the U.S. Geological Survey. Approximately 400 watershed (full upstream area), catchment (nearby landscape), near‐channel, channel, and streamflow features were retrieved or developed from multiple sources, reduced to approximately 30 uncorrelated features, and used in the final ML models. The results indicate suspended sediment and bedload ML models explain approximately 70% of the variance in the datasets. Important features used in the models were interpreted with Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) plots, which provided insight into sediment transport processes. The most important features in the models were developed to normalize streamflow by the 2‐year recurrence interval and quantify the rate of change in streamflow (slope), which helped account for sediment hysteresis. Generally, this study also showed a combination of mostly watershed and catchment geospatial features were important in ML models that predict sediment transport from physical samples. This study is a promising step forward in making fluvial sediment transport predictions using machine learning models trained by physically collected samples. The dynamics of sandy rivers is a complex phenomenon linking the interactions between dunes, flow and sediment transport. Despite an existing large amount of research, few comparative studies exist for rivers with major hydro-sedimentological differences. This work uses detailed dune measurements from the Paraná and Tercero rivers, Argentina. Significant differences were found in the representative roughness height scale, dune steepness, lee angles, velocity profiles and flow recirculation. It is found that whereas the hydraulic resistance for the Tercero River scales with the size of large dunes, the Paraná River needs to develop an intermediate roughness scale (the small superimposed dunes) to accommodate the required balance between gravity and friction. Suspended bed sediment increase is inversely related to the dune steepness and lee side angles as advanced by previous findings. The suspension number seems to be a paramount metric that helps explain differences regarding dune geometry within a wide range of flow conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bedload is notoriously challenging to measure and model; its dynamics, therefore, remains largely unknown in most fluvial systems worldwide. We present results from a global scale bedload flux model as part of the WBMsed modeling framework that well predict the distribution of water discharge, suspended sediment and bedload. The sensitivity of bedload predictions to river slope, particle size, discharge, river width, and suspended sediment were analyzed, showing the model to be most responsive to spatial dynamics in river discharge and slope. The relationship between bedload and total sediment flux is analyzed globally, and for representative longitudinal river profiles (Amazon, Mississippi, and Lena Rivers). The results show that while the proportion of bedload decreases from headwaters to the coasts, there is considerable variability between basins and along river corridors. The topographic and hydrological longitudinal profiles of rivers are shown to be the key drivers of bedload trends, with fluctuations in slope controlling its more local dynamics. Estimates of water and sediment fluxes to global oceans from 2,067 largest river outlets (draining 67% of the global continental area) are provided. Estimated water discharge at 30,579 km3/y corresponds well to past estimates; however, sediment flux is higher. Total global particulate load of 17.8 Gt/y is delivered to global oceans, 14.8 Gt/y as washload, 1.1 Gt/y as bedload, and 2.6 Gt/y as suspended bed material. The largest 25 rivers are predicted to transport more than half of the total sediment flux to global oceans. Understanding and predicting the sediment dynamics within river systems are important, as they have direct impacts on the functioning of riverine and coastal ecosystems, water quality and use, and chemical dynamics of the Earth System as a whole (e.g., carbon fluxes). Sediment is transported in three modes: suspension for small particles, bedload for larger particles, and suspended bed material for medium particles. We show good agreement with observations and provide an analysis of the distribution of the three sediment transport modes globally and, in greater detail, in three large river systems (Mississippi, Amazon, and Lena Rivers). An estimate of water and sediment fluxes to the global oceans is provided, the first to include all three sediment transport modes. An experimental investigation of the entrainment threshold of sediment grains conducted in a non‐tiltable flume is reported and an original processing method based on image correlation suitable for detection of sediment threshold of motion is presented. Unlike existing visual measurement methods, the proposed method is not affected by the individual judgement of the experimentalists, which may strongly impact the estimation of incipient motion. Three entrainment thresholds were exhibited. The method highlighted a first threshold for very low shear stress conditions that was interpreted as a nascent movement threshold. The other two thresholds of motion were related to distinct stages of surface mobility of the bed: one related to bedload threshold and the other to bedform threshold. Series of tests were first performed to study the sensitivity of the method to different parameters: angle of view of the camera, size of the image and acceleration rate of the linear ramp of flow velocity. A ratio of the image surface and the grain surface equal to 3000 was found to be the minimum size to perform reliable estimations of entrainment thresholds for all the sediments in the range of 0.328–2.648 mm tested. It was the only condition for the method to work. Once the method was validated, tests were performed with homogeneous sands and compared to results based on reference‐based and visual methods. The correlation method yields similar values for the bedload threshold to those obtained from reference‐based methods. Thus it could be an alternative to other methodologies by the simplicity of its implementation, precision, no requirement for human interference and direct correlation between threshold velocity and bed mobility without extrapolation. River sediment budgets are prepared globally, under different conditions and requirements. This paper proposes a general methodology for sediment budgeting – the River Sediment Budget Approach (RSBA), to demonstrate the challenges and opportunities involved in establishing a sediment budget. The methodological approach focuses on the bedload, suspended sediment load as well as changes in the river bed and morphology. Four approaches are provided for sediment budgeting, which can be used individually or in combination and are selected based on the time scale and data availability. If measurement data is available or can still be undertaken, a (i) field-based approach is selected. Specifically, the morphological changes or data required for formulas can be gathered using a (ii) GIS-based approach. When calculations are carried out without measured data, a (iii) formula-based approach is pursued. Due to the numerous budgets already conducted and sediment data already measured, an approach dependent on (iv) literature data and estimations can also be considered. Bedload particle tracking is a technique used to better understand sediment dynamics in rivers. Despite technical advances, tracers may be missed in field surveys. The missed tracers may bias the study results even where recovery rates are high, for example if they are preferentially buried close to the seeding site or transported downstream of the surveyed reach. The goal of the current study is to demonstrate that more information can be extracted from a series of bedload tracer surveys by carefully considering the fate of missing and found tracers and implementing a set of strategies to include the (incomplete) information on sediment displacement metrics. A set of open‐source Matlab algorithms collectively called PITtrack are described that perform the calculations. Results from two tracer datasets show that commonly used sediment displacement metrics are sensitive to the inclusion of the missing tracers, even for cases with high recovery rates. Metrics that describe the variance and skewness of the tracers as they disperse are particularly sensitive. The recommended strategy is to include (a) inferred positions of tracers that are missing but unmoved, (b) likely positions of tracers that are missing, moved, and movement can be attributed to a survey period within the uncertain period that meets a dominant flood criterion, and (c) last known positions of tracers considered lost because they go missing and are never found again. Overall the results offer a method to include all available information on missing tracers to better understand sediment dispersion. Future work should be done to assess the classification system for a wider range of field sites and further refine classification based on spatial or other information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
