The necessity of having a perfect beauty created with advertisements has negative impacts on young people.Advertisements usually feature very slim models and their digitally altered, airbrushed and trimmedphotos. Ideal beauty is created by retouching and changing digitally existing images. People compare theirbodies to the perfect bodies in advertisements. Especially young women and men compare these perfectbodies with their own bodies and experience dissatisfaction. This may lead to anxiety, depression and lackof self-confidence in people who are not ideally sized.Since ideal beauty influences the audience, the physical attractiveness of people starring in advertisementsis one of the subjects worth stressing. With an experimental design, the eye movements of young female(40) and male (40) participants were recorded using the eye-tracking method. During this process, participants saw advertisements with and without disclaimer labels. The male participants saw the printadvertisement which included the male model, and the female participants saw the print advertisementwhich included the female model. At the end of the experiment, the Body Dissatisfaction Scale (BDS)and the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale (PACS) were applied to the participants. The relationshipbetween the participants’ levels of body dissatisfaction and physical appearance comparison and their focuson Areas of Interest (AOI) in stimulated and non-stimulated advertising was revealed. The findings of thestudy showed that body dissatisfaction is high among young people and the level of body dissatisfaction didnot affect more attention to any part of the model (body and face).

Body image is the sum of individuals’ perceptions of their own bodies. There are various factors that affect body image, one of which is sociocultural factors. Sociocultural factors, including family, peers and the media, are important factors affecting the body image of individuals. The effects of being overweight on one’s body image perception has been one of the most frequently researched topics in recent years. Studies have also shown that comparing one’s body with people in the media, and the dissatisfaction with one’s body resulting from it, motivates people to resort to various methods of losing weight. Doctors recommend various procedures for health reasons. Moreover, overweight women choose some surgical procedures such as intragastric botox injection, due to their concerns about their body image. Intragastric Botulinum Toxin-A injection (stomach botox) is one of them. This study aims to explore how sociocultural factors affect the overweight/ class I obese female patients’ decision to undergo an intragastric botox injection treatment from an interpretative phenomenological approach. The sample of the study consisted of 12 female patients who had an intragastric botox injection in the last six months. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the patients. The interpretive phenomenological analysis revealed seven themes; self-definition through physical characteristics, motivations towards intragastric botox injection, attitudes towards the body, the perceived effects of being overweight, comparing one’s own body, the role of the media in the decision-making process, and treatment plans for changing one’s appearance in the future. It has been found that the body image perceptions of the patients play an important role in the processing-decision-making processes.. In addition, it has been observed that social media is a channel frequently used by patients for the purpose of obtaining information. The study is important in terms of trying to understand cognitive processes including self-evaluations and body image, their motivations behind intragastric BTA injection, and attitudes toward their bodies [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BODY dysmorphic disorder , *BODY image disturbance , *CRONBACH'S alpha , *DENTAL clinics , *OBSESSIVE-compulsive disorder - Abstract
Objective: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder and accepted as one of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders group. No tests for BDD have been translated into Turkish yet. This study aimed to perform validity and reliability tests on the Turkish version of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive scale Modified for BDD (T-YBOCS-BDD) and the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (T-BIDQ). Methods: The patients who were admitted to the clinics of the dentistry faculty with the aesthetic problems were selected as the study group (n=80) and the control group was designed with the patients with non-aesthetic problems (n=81). The tests were administered to the patients within one week with the test and re-test method. Factor analysis was performed, and the statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: In the evaluation of reliability, Cronbach's alpha was 0.808 for the T-YBOCS-BDD and it was 0.780 for the T-BIDQ. The factor analysis scores were 0.705 and 0.736, whereas and the values of the Bartlett's test of sphericity were 677,296 (df=66, p<0.001) and 336,069 (df=21, p<0.001), respectively. Total mean scores of T-YBOCS-BDD revealed statistically significant results (p=0.006). Conclusion: The tests resulted in high validity and reliability, therefore the results of this study highly recommended clinicians to perform these tests in the Turkish language-speaking countries. Objective: This study aimed to examine the mediation effect of depression on the association between food addiction and body dissatisfaction in patients who seek for treatment for obesity. Methods: The study population consisted of 105 patients admitted to an obesity center in a university hospital. Data from were collected with the patient information form, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Body Image Scale. The direct relationship between food addiction and body dissatisfaction and the mediating effect of depression in the relationship between these two constructs were examined using multi-group structural equation modeling analysis by gender. Results: The mean age of the patients was 50.22±10.05, 86.8% of them were females. The mean body mass index of the patients was calculated as 40.29±6.67. It was determined that 38.7% of the sample met the food addiction diagnosis criteria. It was found that 39.1% of females and 35.7% of males had food addiction. As a result of the modeling analysis, it was determined that there was no direct pathway between body dissatisfaction and food addiction, depression symptoms complete mediated the relationship between these two constructs. Results of multi-group analysis showed that the mediation model was consistent across gender. Conclusions: In the treatment of obesity cases in which food addiction and body image disorders coexist, examining the existence of depression and treating it can increase the success rate. BODY image , *MINIMALLY invasive procedures , *SELF-esteem , *PSYCHOLOGICAL factors , *CROSS-sectional method , *COSMETIC dermatology - Abstract
Objective: Previous studies conducted in different populations have stated that demographical and psychological factors such as low self-esteem and body image are important motivations to undergo minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. This study investigates these factors that are expected to predict motivation for such procedures in Turkish women. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in August 2020 using an online survey with the virtual snowball method. The participants completed a questionnaire that investi gated their sociodemographic variables, psychiatric disorder history, cos metic procedures, motivation sources; including questions from the Rosenberg Self-Esteem and Body-Cathexis Scale. Results: The data of 1,244 women were included. 62% have had some sort of cosmetic procedure. The most commonly performed was laser procedures (79.5%). The most important source of in formation and motivation was doctors. There was a positive correlation among increasing age, graduating university, having a job, having a high monthly income, and the rate of cos metic procedures. The presence of a psychiatric disease did not decrease this rate. While there was no correlation between body perception, self-esteem scores and the total rates of cosmetic procedures, the self-esteem scores of those who had botulinum toxin injec tion, dermal fillers, and platelet-rich plasma were higher than those who had other procedures. Conclusion: This study provides information about psy chosocial factors that predict interest in minimal cosmetic procedures. Un like previously known predictors, body image and selfesteem were not effective. The results may contribute to a better understanding of the factors that may be motivational for undergoing cosmetic procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SELF-consciousness (Awareness) , *BODY image , *SENSORIMOTOR integration , *INFORMATION processing , *TEST validity - Abstract
Self-consciousness is based on dynamic processing of sensory information coming from different bodily sources and leads to differences in body awareness. According to recent studies, this sensory information (i.e. vestibular, somatic-sensory), seems to be a fundamental requirement for the formation of bodily self-consciousness. In this context, based on the compatibility between different sensory inputs there are striking changes occurs in both limb and whole body perception. The basic assumption of the previous research that has been carried out in this area is to test the validity of these different consciousness experiences which will lead to a better understanding of the sensory-integration processes. The aim of this article is to review the neuroscience and psychiatry literature on bodily self-consciousness and to discuss the experimental settings and underlying sensory processes. In addition to that, the limitations of the previous experimental studies are discussed further. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Since alopecia may be the frst physical evidence and sign of cancer diagnosis and treatment, it may have a more serious and challenging efect on a woman than the loss of breast tissue. Objective The purpose of this study was to summarize the current qualitative research which explores the body image perceptions of breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Material and methods We searched three electronic databases and reviewed studies from December 2011 to December 2021 for qualitative results analysing the experiences of women with breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical (JBI) appraisal tool was used to assess the quality of the targeted studies. The Meta-synthesis process developed by Sandelowski and Barroso was used to collect and analyse the data. Results We discovered two main and fve sub-themes from the meta-synthesis fndings of 11 qualitative studies involving 225 women. The main themes were “I am not comfortable in this body” and “Who am I?”. The frst main theme revealed patients’ intense reactions to their hair loss: “I'm in emotional chaos”, “I am looking for a place to hide” and “I knew it and now I’m experiencing it”.The second main theme of “Who am I?” contained two sub-themes: “What did my hair take from my femininity when it was gone?” and “Will I lose my partner after my hair?”. Conclusion Meta-synthesis provided an up-to-date and integrated interpretation of scientifc results about the experiences of women with breast cancer, alopecia, and their body image perceptions. This interpretation will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the alopecia-body image relationship. Thus, the aim of the meta-synthesis results is that these will contribute to nurses’ understanding of how alopecia, although a temporary symptom, afects women's perceptions of body image. No sponsor

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bu sonuçlar, bazı yeme bozukluklarının kültüre özgü semptomları olduğunu gösterirken bu durumun her yeme bozukluğu için ortaya çıkmayabileceğini ve ilgili literatürde, gelecek çalışmaların farklı yeme bozukluklarını farklı kültürlerde test etmesine ihtiyaç olduğunu göstermektedir., Eating disorders are recurrent disturbances in eating behaviours (APA, 2013) whose development are presumably associated with biologic, psychological, developmental and sociocultural factors (Rikani et all., 2013). Encompassing six distinct eating habits, eating disorders are classified in DSM-5 as pica, rumination, avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (APA,2013). On the other hand, two contrasting explanations exist vis-a-vis the connection between culture and eating disorders, i.e. eating disorders appear in unalike forms in different cultures and eating disorders are worldwide phenomenon irrespective of cultural variations. This paper endeavours to collate the views on the functions of cultural elements in emergence of eating disorders and assesses the intercultural dissimilitudes during the process. To this end, it also touches on the possible causes of cultural distinctions detected during the literature review. It appears that the majority of studies are administered on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder and their results indicate that certain eating disorders have culture-specific symptoms. They also indicate, however, the symptoms may not develop on all eating disorders and future studies in the field need to examine eating disorders in different cultural settings.

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is not only reported to be associated with metabolic abnormalities, as well as psychological disturbances that affects quality of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether hirsutismus and body-mass index (BMI) alterations in PCOS is associated with body image, anxiety and depression. Material and Methods: In this study 63 PCOS and 55 age matched controls were evaluated. All participants completed standardized questionnaires including body image scale, Beck anxiety and depression inventories. BMI values and hirsutism existence were also recorded. Results: Beck anxiety scores in PCOS patients and controls were 13.7±11.2 and 9.4±7.6 respectively. Although PCOS women had significant high anxiety scores (p=0.019), no statistical significant difference were observed between groups in terms of body image (p=0.198) and depression (p=0.079). Hirsutismus and BMI values did not seem to effect body image, anxiety and depression. Moreover no correlation was observed between these 3 parameters in PCOS patients. Conclusion: Anxiety scores are more common in PCOS women compared with healthy controls independently from hirsutismus and BMI. Elevated anxiety levels in PCOS women might be associated with metabolic abnormalities during the course of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the role of media on ideas of university students from different countries regarding body image. 381 undergraduate students from Turkey and 235 undergraduate students from the UK participated in this study. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, a questionnaire that consists of questions on "demographic information", "media habits" and "Socio-cultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale" was designed. The reliability and validity analyses of the study were conducted and the results revealed that the scale was reliable and valid for both countries. A valid factorization related to body image and media was obtained from the factor analyses. Results from t-tests between Turkey and the UK indicated significant differences in the factors pressure of the media, comparing the body with the people in the media, trying to look like the people in the media, and awareness of the ideal body. Average scores for all of the factors were found to be higher in the UK than those of in Turkey. Two separate Path Models were estimated for Turkey and the UK through LISREL program. For Turkey, the results showed that the factors, traditional media as a source of information, pressure of the traditional media, pressure of the social media, and the awareness of the ideal body were observed to cause people to compare themselves with the people in the media and consequently to try to look like them. For the UK, pressure of the traditional media, and the awareness of ideal body were observed to cause people to compare themselves with the people in the media and consequently to try to look like them. As a result, in both countries, it was found out that traditional media, in particular, had a role on ideas related with body image of the university students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by the presence of an imaginary defect of oneself and an increased mental occupation which causes either an impairment in functionality or clinical distress. The aim of our study was to detect BDD prevalence and its clinical features in hospitalized psychiatric patients. Material and Method: Hospitalized patients in our clinics were evaluated. All the patients in our study were evaluated by using a questionnaire that was prepared in accordance with the BDD literature by the authors, a sociodemographic data form, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) and Structured Clinical Interview for Axis II Disorders (SCID-II). Results: BDD prevalence was found to be 7% in hospitalized psychiatric patients. It was also observed that all patients with BDD had self-image anxiety, had mirror checking behaviour, tended to camuflage the perceived defect, spent more than one hour in selfimage anxiety and had personality disorders. Howeve, none of the BDD patients ever mentioned any symptoms related to BDD unless they were asked and none of them had been diagnosed with BDD by the psychiatric team who were treating them. Conclusion: BDD is relatively common in hospitalized psychiatric patients. Therefore most BDD patients are not diagnosed. BDD diagnosis rate might be improved by questioning BDD as well as inspecting self-image anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims at developing a measuring instrument of which validity and reliability for measuring the body images of individuals during adolescence and young adulthood are proven. The study group consists of 384 high school students. The content validity of the study was tested by seeking an expert opinion and the construct validity was tested by applying explanatory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analysis. In the scope of analysis, IBM SPSS Statistics v20.0 and Lisrel 8.80 programs were used. As a result of EFA, a four-factor structure, which explains 62% of the total variance and is composed of 21 items, was obtained. The factors were called “Negative Perception of the Body”, “Evaluation Sensitivity”, “Positive Perception of the Body”, and “Body Change”. As a result of CFA, it was determined that the four-factor structure consisting of 21 items had an adequate fit index. As a consequence of reliability analysis, it was found that the Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficients, calculated for EFA and CFA samples, being .92 and .88 fell within acceptable values. The findings obtained following the item analysis demonstrated that the total score of items listed in the Body Image Scale presented a high level of predictive power and distinctiveness. The Body Image Scale can be defined as a valid and reliable measuring instrument to be used to measure the body image of adolescents and young adults.

Ön test-son test kontrol gruplu desen olarak yürütülen araştırmaya 15' i deney, 18' i kontrol grubunda olmak üzere toplam 33 kişi katılım göstermiştir. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of online exercises on mindfulness, mental well-being and body image of adult females. A total of 33 people, 15 in the experimental group and 18 in the control group, participated in the study, which was conducted as a pre-test-post-test control group design. The data was collected by the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), developed by Brown and Ryan (2003) and adapted into Turkish by Özyeşil, Arslan, Kesici, and Deniz (2011); the Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) developed by Warwick and Edinburgh Universities and adapted into Turkish by Keldal (2015); Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) developed by Tylka and WoodBarcalow (2015) and adapted into Turkish by Anlı, Akın, Eker and Özçelik (2015) and Personal Information Form created by the researcher. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were used. When the findings are examined, a statistically significant difference was found in the mindfulness, mental well-being and body image pre-test-post-test scores of the experimental group. It was determined that this difference was due to the high mean scores of the experimental group. There was no statistically significant difference in the mindfulness, mental well-being and body image pre-test-post-test scores of the control group. As a result; It has been determined that online exercises are effective on adult female's mindfulness, mental well-being and body image.

Sonuç: Menopoza girmiş ve girmemiş kadınlarda benlik saygısı, beden imajı ve cinsel doyum arasında anlamlı ilişki olduğu ve bu üç değişkenin birbirine etki ettiği tespit edilmiştir., Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of self-esteem and body image on sexual satisfaction in menopausal women and to compare them with the non-menopausal control group. For this purpose, the relationship between socio-demographic variables and self-esteem, body image and sexual satisfaction, and whether there is a difference between the groups formed in the context of socio-demographic variables in terms of dependent variable levels were examined. In addition, it was investigated whether self-esteem and body image predict sexual satisfaction in menopausal women. Method: The method of the research was determined as a questionnaire. The body image levels of the participant group were determined by the 'Body Perception Scale', their self-esteem levels were determined by the 'Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale', and their sexual satisfaction levels were determined by the 'Golombok-Rust Sexual Satisfaction Scale'. The sample of the study consists of a total of 200 women, 100 women who have entered menopause and 100 women who have not. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 22 computer based statistical program. Results: In our study, it was found that there is a moderate linear relationship between self-esteem and body image in menopausal and non-menopausal women. In addition, it was determined that there was a low linear relationship between self-esteem and sexual satisfaction in both groups, and a moderate linear relationship between body image and sexual satisfaction. It has been determined that there is a significant relationship between self-esteem, body image and sexual satisfaction in menopausal and non-menopausal women, and these three variables affect each other.
