Abstract

The recent development of the superlattice nanowire pattern transfer (SNAP) technique allows for the fabrication of arrays of nanowires at a diameter, pitch, aspect ratio, and regularity beyond competing approaches. Here, we report the fabrication of conducting Si nanowire arrays with wire widths and pitches of 10-20 nm and 40-50 nm, respectively, and resistivity values comparable to the bulk through the selection of appropriate silicon-on-insulator substrates, careful reactive-ion etching, and spin-on glass doping. These results promise the realization of interesting nano-electronic circuits and devices, including chemical and biological sensors, nano-scale mosaics for molecular electronics, and ultra-dense field-effect transistor (FET) arrays., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to APL Mar '04

Abstract

Background: Clear cell sarcoma (CCS), epithelioid sarcoma, and synovial sarcoma are rare tumors historically identified as high risk for lymph node metastasis. Nodal metastasis in adults with these subtypes has been described. This study investigates incident nodal metastasis and associated survival in children with these subtypes. Procedure: Using the National Cancer Database (2004-2015), we created a retrospective cohort of 1303 patients (aged ≤25 years) who underwent local control therapy for CCS, epithelioid sarcoma, and synovial sarcoma. Kaplan-Meier curves estimated overall survival (OS) by subtype. Stratifying on subtype, Cox regressions assessed OS by lymph node sampling status and nodal metastasis. Results: There were 103 (7.9%) patients with CCS, 221 (17.0%) with epithelioid sarcoma, and 979 (75.1%) with synovial sarcoma. 18. Operational improvements of long-term predicted ephemerides of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRSs)

Abstract

Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) orbit determination and prediction are supported by the Flight Dynamics Facility (FDF) of the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Flight Dynamics Division (FDD). TDRS System (TDRSS)-user satellites require predicted TDRS ephemerides that are up to 10 weeks in length. Previously, long-term ephemerides generated by the FDF included predictions from the White Sands Complex (WSC), which plans and executes TDRS maneuvers. TDRSs typically have monthly stationkeeping maneuvers, and predicted postmaneuver state vectors are received from WSC up to a month in advance. This paper presents the results of an analysis performed in the FDF to investigate more accurate and economical long-term ephemerides for the TDRSs. As a result of this analysis, two new methods for generating long-term TDRS ephemeris predictions have been implemented by the FDF. The Center-of-Box (COB) method models a TDRS as fixed at the center of its stationkeeping box. Using this method, long-term ephemeris updates are made semiannually instead of weekly. The impulse method is used to model more maneuvers. The impulse method yields better short-term accuracy than the COB method, especially for larger stationkeeping boxes. The accuracy of the impulse method depends primarily on the accuracy of maneuver date forecasting.

Abstract

The Flight Dynamics Facility (FDF) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) generates numerous products for NASA-supported spacecraft, including the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS's), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), and the space shuttle. These products include orbit determination data, acquisition data, event scheduling data, and attitude data. In most cases, product generation involves repetitive execution of many programs. The increasing number of missions supported by the FDF has necessitated the use of automated systems to schedule, execute, and quality assure these products. This automation allows the delivery of accurate products in a timely and cost-efficient manner. To be effective, these systems must automate as many repetitive operations as possible and must be flexible enough to meet changing support requirements. The FDF Orbit Determination Task (ODT) has implemented several systems that automate product generation and quality assurance (QA). These systems include the Orbit Production Automation System (OPAS), the New Enhanced Operations Log (NEOLOG), and the Quality Assurance Automation Software (QA Tool). Implementation of these systems has resulted in a significant reduction in required manpower, elimination of shift work and most weekend support, and improved support quality, while incurring minimal development cost. This paper will present an overview of the concepts used and experiences gained from the implementation of these automation systems.

Abstract

Canada and the United States, two of the larger and politically powerful Arctic States, have had a longstanding interest in Arctic shipping and navigation. For Canada, shipping and navigation were not only critical for the initial exploration and discovery of the Canadian North, but were also pivotal to the development of the region. The Northwest Passage, an iconic Arctic waterway which is deeply ingrained in the Canadian psyche,1 has also proven to be contentious in Canadian-us relations given differing views as to its status. For the United States, shipping and navigation has likewise been critical to the development of Alaska both economically and strategically, while us strategic interests across the Arctic as a whole have also relied heavily upon the freedom of navigation. When these historical factors are combined with the impacts of climate change and a partially ice free Arctic Ocean,2 which in turn is attracting significant interest from states that traditionally have not had an interest in Arctic affairs, a range of diplomatic, legal and policy implications are confronting Arctic shipping and navigation.

Having accurate, readily accessible data is an integral part of managing production at a mine. The Emeco Operating System (EOS) has been developed in conjunction with sites including the Mungari White Foil operations in Western Australia, for data collection and management in smaller operations. The system uses the on-board hardware from existing fleet management systems to capture key performance indicators and materials tracking metrics. It has a low upfront capital cost, higher accuracy than manual input systems, low operational expenditure, low training needs, access to information over 3G connections, and facility to upgrade to use high precision global positioning and collision avoidance. EOS has been implemented at the White Foil open cast gold mine where the three main aims were payload management, excavator productivity, and load and haul productivity. Change management was found to be the most important aspect of the program, with buy-in from site personnel being more important than technology in improving productivity. Abstract

An e-book usage survey was sent through departmental mailing lists to the graduate students, scientists and faculty members of the Chemistry Department and Biology Department of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB). Several faculty members, scientists and graduates students from the Chemistry Department and Biology Department were also contacted for interviews about their e-books usage experience. The purpose of the survey and interviews was to get a better understanding of users' e-book awareness, what advantages they find in using e-books, what concerns they have about e-book purchases and features, and what the library could do to better promote the use of e-book resources on campus. 36. Modeling targeted layered containment of an influenza pandemic in the United States

Abstract

Planning a response to an outbreak of a pandemic strain of influenza is a high public health priority. Three research groups using different individual-based, stochastic simulation models have examined the consequences of intervention strategies chosen in consultation with U.S. public health workers. The first goal is to simulate the effectiveness of a set of potentially feasible intervention strategies. Combinations called targeted layered containment (TLC) of influenza antiviral treatment and prophylaxis and nonpharmaceutical interventions of quarantine, isolation, school closure, community social distancing, and workplace social distancing are considered. The second goal is to examine the robustness of the results to model assumptions. The comparisons focus on a pandemic outbreak in a population similar to that of Chicago, with ≈8.6 million people. The simulations suggest that at the expected transmissibility of a pandemic strain, timely implementation of a combination of targeted household antiviral prophylaxis, and social distancing measures could substantially lower the illness attack rate before a highly efficacious vaccine could become available. Timely initiation of measures and school closure play important roles. Because of the current lack of data on which to base such models, further field research is recommended to learn more about the sources of transmission and the effectiveness of social distancing measures in reducing influenza transmission. © 2008 by The National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
