Objective: This study aimed to compare the precision of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-related bite-registration technique with the occlusion-related registration technique using various polyvinyl siloxane materials. Methods: The interocclusal relation of 40 patients was transferred to stone casts by bite registrations using polyvinyl siloxane materials with different Shore harnesses (SH) values including Registrado clear (SH=70 A), Registrado xtra (SH=51 D) and Registrado scan (SH=90A). A joint-related registration technique (called the Gerber technique or gothic arch tracing) was also applied in all patents. The clinical contact situation and the contacts on stone casts were marked and transferred to a 3D-measuring software. The deviation of the occlusal contacts on the stone casts to the clinical reference was measured and compared between the registration methods. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in contact deviation values between different types of registration methods (P=0.093). However, the frequency of missing contacts was significantly greater in the Gerber technique compared to the occlusion-related bite registrations (P<0.001). Gerber technique revealed greater deviations of the contact points in subjects with pain in TMJ and masticatory muscles. Irrespective of the registration technique, the patient-related factors including orthodontic pretreatment, treatment of TMD with occlusal splints, pain on palpation, joint noises, and restricted mandibular movement did not significantly affect the degree of occlusal contact deviation (P>0.05). Conclusions: The hardness of the polyvinyl siloxane materials for occlusion-related bite registration did not affect the precision of the registration techniques in dentulous patients. Polyvinyl siloxane materials should be preferred for joint-related registration in TMD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies have shown sex differences regarding "overexcitabilities": women score higher than men in emotional and sensual overexcitability whereas men tend to excel in intellectual as well as in psychomotor overexcitability. Some studies even found no sex differences at all. Many studies comprised gifted/talented subjects. Taking into account the few studies that simultaneously examined the factors "giftedness" and "sex" in relation to overexcitability and that yielded conflicting results, our study attempts to clear these heterogeneous findings by investigating a German sample. Our study comprised intellectually gifted (n = 96) and averagely intelligent (n = 91) adults who filled out the "Overexcitability Questionnaire-Two". We found no statistically significant interaction of "giftedness x sex". Women (regardless of their intellectual status) scored statistically significantly higher than gifted and non-gifted men on emotional as well as sensual overexcitability. With regard to the factor "giftedness", gifted individuals displayed a statistically significantly higher intellectual overexcitability. (Contains 1 table.)

Seguindo nosso recente estudo “Vygotsky’s inner speech ajuda na solução de problemas matemáticos em TICs?” e os estudos de Berk que apresentam bons resultados sobre a correlação da teoria de inner speech de Vygotsky e a resolução de problemas matemáticos, iniciou-se esta pesquisa (2ª fase do projeto) que visa verificar se há a possibilidade de obter melhores resultados na resolução de problemas matemáticos quando o diálogo interno é induzido por meio do uso de prompts. Fazendo uso de uma metodologia similar a de Behrend, foi observado e feito o registro audiovisual de 15% dos estudantes do curso de matemática da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (n = 11) ao resolverem dois problemas de construção na plataforma digital GeoGebra. Os participantes foram informados quanto à importância do inner speech e cons-tantemente relembrados, via prompts, da sua existência durante as resoluções. Nossa análise dos indicadores do inner speech com relação ao desempenho na resolução dos problemas apresenta valor-p de 0,0177 (p chr(38)lt; 0,05) utilizando o teste t de Student do SPSS, assim como indícios suficientes para rejeitar nossa hipótese nula (o uso de prompts para instigar o uso de Vygotsky’s inner speech não ajuda na resolução de problemas matemáticos em TICs)

Background: Somatic mutations of the PIK3CA gene have been described in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but limited data is available on their biological relevance. This study was performed to characterize PIK3CA-mutated NSCLC clinically and genetically., Patients and Methods: Tumor tissue collected consecutively from 1144 NSCLC patients within a molecular screening network between March 2010 and March 2012 was analyzed for PIK3CA mutations using dideoxy-sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Clinical, pathological, and genetic characteristics of PIK3CA-mutated patients are described and compared with a control group of PIK3CA-wildtype patients., Results: Among the total cohort of 1144 patients we identified 42 (3.7%) patients with PIK3CA mutations in exon 9 and exon 20. These mutations were found with a higher frequency in sqamous cell carcinoma (8.9%) compared to adenocarcinoma (2.9%, p<0.001). The most common PIK3CA mutation was exon 9 E545K. The majority of patients (57.1%) had additional oncogenic driver aberrations. With the exception of EGFR-mutated patients, non of the genetically defined subgroups in this cohort had a significantly better median overall survival. Further, PIK3CA-mutated patients had a significantly higher incidence of malignancy prior to lung cancer (p<0.001)., Conclusion: PIK3CA-mutated NSCLC represents a clinically and genetically heterogeneous subgroup in adenocarcinomas as well as in squamous cell carcinomas with a higher prevalence of these mutations in sqamous cell carcinoma. PIK3CA mutations have no negative impact on survival after surgery or systemic therapy. However, PIK3CA mutated lung cancer frequently develops in patients with prior malignancies.
