Abstract

The proton--proton elastic differential cross section at very small four momentum transfer squared has been measured at three different incident proton momenta in the range of 2.5 to 3.2 GeV/c by detecting the recoil proton at polar angles close to $90^\circ$. The measurement was performed at COSY with the KOALA detector covering the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The total cross section $\sigma_\text{tot}$, which has been determined precisely, is consistent with previous measurements. The values of the slope parameter $B$ and the relative real amplitude ratio $\rho$ determined in this experiment alleviate the lack of data in the relevant energy region. This precise data on $\rho$ might be an important check for a new dispersion analysis.

Abstract

The design and construction of a recoil detector for the measurement of recoil protons of antiproton-proton elastic scattering at scattering angles close to 90$^{\circ}$ are described. The performance of the recoil detector has been tested in the laboratory with radioactive sources and at COSY with proton beams by measuring proton-proton elastic scattering. The results of laboratory tests and commissioning with beam are presented. Excellent energy resolution and proper working performance of the recoil detector validate the conceptual design of the KOALA experiment at HESR to provide the cross section data needed to achieve a precise luminosity determination at the PANDA experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

The paper describes the commissioning of the experimental equipment and the machine studies required for the first spin-filtering experiment with protons at a beam kinetic energy of $49.3\,$MeV in COSY. The implementation of a low-$\beta$ insertion made it possible to achieve beam lifetimes of $\tau_{\rm{b}}=8000\,$s in the presence of a dense polarized hydrogen storage-cell target of areal density $d_{\rm t}=(5.5\pm 0.2)\times 10^{13}\,\mathrm{atoms/cm^{2}}$. The developed techniques can be directly applied to antiproton machines and allow for the determination of the spin-dependent $\bar{p}p$ cross sections via spin filtering.

Abstract

We propose to use an internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target in the AD ring to determine for the first time the two total spin-dependent pbar-p cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 at antiproton beam energies in the range from 50 to 450 MeV. The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first experimental constraint of the spin-spin dependence of the nucleon-antinucleon potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to feed a double-polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons. Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. Abstract

We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin flip cross section in low-energy electron-proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first experimental constraint of the spin–spin dependence of the nucleon–antinucleon potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to feed a double–polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons. Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. The availability of an intense stored beam of polarized antiprotons will provide access to a wealth of single– and double–spin observables, thereby opening a new window on QCD spin physics. A recent experiment at COSY revealed that ep spin–flip cross sections are too small to cause a detectable depolarization of a stored proton beam. This measurement rules out a proposal to use polarized positrons to polarize an antiproton beam by e+pbar spin–flip interactions. Thus, our approach to provide a beam of polarized antiprotons is based on spin filtering, using an internal polarized hydrogen gas target – a method that has been tested with stored protons. We expect to produce a polarized antiproton beam with at least ten orders of magnitude higher intensity than a secondary polarized antiproton beam previously available. Provided that antiproton beams with a polarization of about 15% can be obtained with the APR, the antiproton machine at FAIR (the High Energy Storage Ring) could be converted into a double–polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider by installation of an additional COSY–like ring. In this setup, antiprotons of 3.5 GeV/c collide with protons of 15 GeV/c at c.m. energies of √s ≈ √200 GeV with a luminosity in excess of 10^31 cm−2s−1. The PAX physics program proposed for FAIR has been highly rated, and would include, most importantly, a first direct measurement of the transversity distribution of the valence quarks in the proton, and a first measurement of the moduli and the relative phase of the time–like electric and magnetic form factors G_E,M of the proton. Abstract

In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pions was studied using 1.2e5 fully reconstructed events, and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027+/-0.008(stat)+/-0.005(syst). Abstract

We recently studied spin flipping of a 1.94 GeV/c vertically polarized proton beam at COSY in Julich, Germany. We swept an rf-dipole's frequency through an rf-induced spin resonance to flip the beam's polarization direction. After determining the resonance's frequency, we varied the dipole's strength, frequency range, and frequency ramp time. At the rf-dipole's maximum strength, and optimum frequency range and ramp time, we measured a spin-flip efficiency of 99.3% +/- 0.1%. This result indicates that an rf dipole may allow efficient spin flipping in high energy proton rings.

Abstract

K+ meson production in pA (A = C, Cu, Au) collisions has been studied using the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the COSY-Juelich accelerator. The complete momentum spectrum of kaons emitted at forward angles, theta < 12 degrees, has been measured for a beam energy of T(p)=1.0 GeV, far below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV. The spectrum does not follow a thermal distribution at low kaon momenta and the larger momenta reflect a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus., 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

ANKE is a new experimental facility for the spectroscopy of products from proton -induced reactions on internal targets. It has recently been implemented in the accelerator ring of the cooler synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZ-Jülich), Germany. The device consists of three dipole magnets, various target installatio ns and dedicated detection systems. It will enable a variety of hadron-physics experiments like meson production in elementary proton-nucleon processes and studies of medium modifications in proton-nucleus interactions.

Abstract

The PAX Collaboration has successfully performed a spin-filtering experiment with protons at the COSY-ring. The measurement allowed the determination of the spin-dependent polarizing cross section, that compares well with the theoretical prediction from the nucleon-nucleon potential. The test confirms that spin-filtering can be adopted as a method to polarize a stored beam and that the present interpretation of the mechanism in terms of the proton-proton interaction is correct. Abstract

The new spectrometer ANKE has been put into operation at the accelerator COSY of the Forschungszentrum Jfilich. An initial scientific goal is to study K+-production in pA collisions at subthreshold energies below the free NN-threshold of T = 1.58 GeV. First measurements of double differential cross sections in p12C collisions at emission angles around 0° have been performed at T = 1.0,1.2 and 2.0 GeV. The challenge is to identify the kaons in a huge background of pions and protons, since the signal to background ratio decreases to about 10-6 at T = 1.0 GeV. For background suppression detectors and a trigger system based on energy-loss and time-of-flight measurements have been developed. In the analysis the decay of kaons (τ = 12.4 ns) stopped in the detection system into π+ and μ+ is exploited as well as the track information from the wire chambers.

Abstract

A universal facility is in preparation for the study of particle production in proton-nucleus reactions below the nucleon-nucleon threshold. The device will be located at the internal target position TP2 at COSY-Jülich and will consist of three dipole magnets. This 0° 'Facility will separate ejectile from the circulating proton beam and allow momentum and angle analysis both for positively and negatively charged particles. A major goal of the experimental program is the investigation of the K+-meson production at projectile energies below the NN threshold. The detector concept for these studies is described and also an overview over further planned experiments is given.

28. Measurement of the η→3π0 Dalitz plot distribution with the WASA detector at COSY

Abstract

We recently stored a 1.85 GeV/c vertically polarized deuteron beam in the COSY Ring in Jülich; we then spin-flipped it by ramping a new air-core rf dipole’s frequency through an rf-induced spin resonance to manipulate the polarization direction of the deuteron beam. We first experimentally determined the resonance’s frequency and set the dipole’s rf voltage to its maximum; then we varied its frequency ramp time and frequency range. We used the EDDA detector to measure the vector and tensor polarization asymmetries. We have not yet extracted the deuteron’s tensor polarization spin-flip parameters from the measured data, since our short run did not provide adequate tensor analyzing-power data at 1.85 GeV/c. However, with a 100 Hz frequency ramp and our longest ramp time of 400 s, the deuterons’ vector polarization spin-flip efficiency was 48±1%. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

At the cooler synchrotron COSY, protons and deuterons are accelerated up to 3.65 GeV/c. Vertically polarized proton beams with more than 70% polarization have been delivered in recent years to internal as well as to external experiment areas at different momenta up to the maximum momentum of COSY. In a strong-focusing synchrotron like COSY, imperfection and intrinsic resonances cause polarization losses during acceleration. The existing magnet system of COSY allows to overcome all imperfection resonances by exciting adiabatic spin flips without polarization losses. A tune-jump system consisting of two fast quadrupoles has been developed to handle intrinsic resonances in COSY. This magnet system is being successfully utilized at all intrinsic resonances in the momentum range of COSY. For the acceleration of vertically polarized deuterons, additional correction provisions are not necessary to preserve polarization during acceleration because depolarizing resonances are not crossed in the momentum range of COSY at ordinary transversal betatron tunes. In future upgrades we are planning to install spin rotators to provide longitudinally polarized beam to internal as well as to external experiments. Such devices can also be used as Siberian snake to overcome depolarizing resonances. Since strong first order depolarizing resonances are crossed in COSY, it will be possible to study snake resonances in detail. In particular the behavior of the spin field and the mechanism of polarization loss during snake resonance crossing are of major interest for high energy polarized beam acceleration. Abstract

Abstract. The spectrometer ANKE at the synchrotron COSY-Jülich allows to momentum analyze ejectiles emitted from an internal target at forward angles φ...0° with large angular acceptance (ΔΩ ... 50 msr). In first measurements the K[sup +]-production in pA collisions at beam energies from 1.0 GeV, far below the nucleon-nucleon threshold of 1.58 GeV, up to 2.3 GeV was investigated. The experimental challenge at 1.0 GeV is to measure the K[sup +]-production with cross sections of about 10[sup -34] cm² at a background cross sections level of 10[sup -27] cm². Data on the target-mass dependence of the differential cross section for kaon momenta P[sub K+] = 150...510 MeV/c and three different targets, C, Cu and Au, are presented and compared with theoretical predictions. Abstract

ANKE is a second generation experimental facility at the internal beam of the accelerator COSY at the Forschungszentrum Ju¨lich (Germany). It has recently (May 1998) been installed in the ring, commissioned and immediately after this been exploited for first experiments. Using circulating beams of protons with energies between 1.0 and 2.3 GeV, sub- and near threshold production of K[sup +] mesons in collisions with carbon-strip targets has been investigated. The detection system of ANKE used for the first measurements is capable of detecting positively charged ejectiles in the momentum range between about 100 and 600 MeV/c. In particular, it has been optimized for K[sup +] identification in the presence of an intense background of protons and pions. The final results of the experiments (cross sections and momentum spectra) will be used to obtain more detailed information on the subthreshold production mechanism. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

COSY is a cooler synchrotron and storage ring delivering high precision proton beams with momenta between 300 MeV/c and 3400 MeV/c for experiments in medium energy physics. Two cooling systems are used. An electron cooler that reaches up to a momentum of 600 MeV/c and a stochastic cooling system that covers the upper momentum range from 1500 to 3400 MeV/c. Horizontal and vertical as well as longitudinal stochastic cooling by the filter method are successfully applied for internal experiments with cluster targets. Third order resonant extraction and stochastic extraction are used to serve external experiments. A nearly ideal rectangular spill of 5 to more than 50 s has been achieved with the stochastic feeding system. Abstract

Seit 1980 werden in der Region Nordrhein-Westfalen Pläne zur optimalen Nutzung der kernphysikalischen Großgeräte der KFA und zu deren Modernisierung und Ausbau diskutiert. Die wesentlichen experimentellen Anforderungen wurden in zahlreichen Gesprächen und Arbeitstreffen$^{Be82,Co83,Be84,Co85,Jü86)}$ mit Kollegen aus der Kern- und Mittelenergiephysik, vor allem aus Nordrhein-Westfalen konkretisiert. Daraus hat sich der Vorschlag für das Speicher- und Kühlersynchrotron COSY am IKP der KFA Jülich entwickelt, welches das vorhandene Zyklotron JULIC als Injektor nutzt. Die schon seit 1980 bestehende Zusammenarbeit wurde durch Gründung der "COSY-Arbeitsgemeinschaft nordrhein-westfälischer Universitäten" (CANU) unter dem Vorsitz von Prof. Dr. T. Mayer-Kuckuk formalisiert. Nach einer Entscheidung des Vorstandes der KFA wurde im Herbst 1985 eine "Arbeitsgruppe Vorbereitung COSY" gebildet, um die vorliegende techni sehe Beschreibung zum Bau des Kühler-Synchrotrons COSY auszuarbeiten, sowie den Aufwand abzuschätzen. Die Beschreibung basiert auf dem unveränderten Maschinenkonzept, das im Juni 1985 vorgestellt wurde. Eine detaillierte Kostenaufstellung erscheint gesondert. [...]
