Search

The quest for a global quantum internet is based on the realization of a scalable network which requires quantum hardware with exceptional performance. Among them are quantum light sources providing deterministic, high brightness, high-fidelity entangled photons and quantum memories with coherence times in the millisecond range and above. To operate the network on a global scale, the quantum light source should emit at telecommunication wavelengths with minimum propagation losses. A cornerstone for the operation of such a quantum network is the demonstration of quantum teleportation. Here we realize full-photonic quantum teleportation employing one of the most promising platforms, i.e. semiconductor quantum dots, which can fulfill all the aforementioned requirements. Two remote quantum dots are used, one as a source of entangled photon pairs and the other as a single-photon source. The frequency mismatch between the triggered sources is erased using two polarization-preserving quantum frequency converters, enabling a Bell state measurement at telecommunication wavelengths. A post-selected teleportation fidelity of up to 0.721(33) is achieved, significantly above the classical limit, demonstrating successful quantum teleportation between light generated by distinct sources. These results mark a major advance for the semiconductor platform as a source of quantum light fulfilling a key requirement for a scalable quantum network. This becomes particularly relevant after the seminal breakthrough of addressing a nuclear spin in semiconductor quantum dots demonstrating long coherence times, thus fulfilling another crucial step towards a scalable quantum network.

Jet observables at hadron colliders feature ''super-leading'' logarithms, double-logarithmic corrections resulting from a breakdown of color coherence due to complex phases in hard-scattering amplitudes. While these effects only arise in high orders of perturbation theory and are suppressed in the large-$N_c$ limit, they formally constitute leading logarithmic corrections to the cross sections. We present the first analysis of the corresponding contributions to a hadronic cross section, including all partonic channels and interference effects. Interestingly, some interference terms in partonic $q\bar q\to q\bar q$ scattering are only linearly suppressed in $1/N_c$. Our results for the $pp\to 2$ jets gap-between-jets cross section demonstrate the numerical importance of super-leading logarithms for small values of the veto scale $Q_0$, showing that these contributions should be accounted for in precision studies of such observables., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We define Poisson genericity for infinite sequences in any finite or countable alphabet with an invariant exponentially-mixing probability measure. A sequence is Poisson generic if the number of occurrences of blocks of symbols asymptotically follows a Poisson law as the block length increases. We prove that almost all sequences are Poisson generic. Our result generalizes Peres and Weiss' theorem about Poisson genericity of integral bases numeration systems. In particular, we obtain that their continued fraction expansions for almost all real numbers are Poisson generic.

The choice of lung protective ventilation settings for mechanical ventilation has a considerable impact on patient outcome, yet identifying optimal ventilatory settings for individual patients remains highly challenging due to the inherent inter- and intra-patient pathophysiological variability. In this validation study, we demonstrate that physics-based computational lung models tailored to individual patients can resolve this variability, allowing us to predict the otherwise unknown local state of the pathologically affected lung during mechanical ventilation. For seven ARDS patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation, physics-based, patient-specific lung models were created using chest CT scans and ventilatory data. By numerically resolving the interaction of the pathological lung with the airway pressure and flow imparted by the ventilator, we predict the time-dependent and heterogeneous local state of the lung for each patient and compare it against the regional ventilation obtained from bedside monitoring using Electrical Impedance Tomography. Excellent agreement between numerical simulations and experimental data was obtained, with the model-predicted anteroposterior ventilation profile achieving a Pearson correlation of 96% with the clinical reference data. Even when considering the regional ventilation within the entire transverse chest cross-section and across the entire dynamic ventilation range, an average correlation of more than 81% and an average root mean square error of less than 15% were achieved. The results of this first systematic validation study demonstrate the ability of computational models to provide clinically relevant information and thereby open the door for a truly patient-specific choice of ventilator settings on the basis of both individual anatomy and pathophysiology., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We analyze the low-energy dynamics of gap-between-jets cross sections at hadron colliders, for which phase factors in the hard amplitudes spoil collinear cancellations and lead to double (``super-leading'') logarithmic behavior. Based on a method-of-regions analysis, we identify three-loop contributions from perturbative active-active Glauber-gluon exchanges with the right structure to render the cross section consistent with PDF factorization below the gap veto scale. The Glauber contributions we identify are unambiguously defined without regulators beyond dimensional regularization., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The discrepancy of a binary string is the maximum (absolute) difference between the number of ones and the number of zeroes over all possible substrings of the given binary string. In this note we determine the minimal discrepancy that a binary de Bruijn sequence of order $n$ can achieve, which is $n$. This was an open problem until now. We give an algorithm that constructs a binary de Bruijn sequence with minimal discrepancy. A slight modification of this algorithm deals with arbitrary alphabets and yields de Bruijn sequences of order $n$ with discrepancy at most $1$ above the trivial lower bound $n$.

A number is normal in base $b$ if, in its base $b$ expansion, all blocks of digits of equal length have the same asymptotic frequency. The rate at which a number approaches normality is quantified by the classical notion of discrepancy, which indicates how far the scaling of the number by powers of $b$ is from being equidistributed modulo 1. This rate is known as the discrepancy of a normal number. The Champernowne constant $c_{10} = 0.12345678910111213141516\ldots$ is the most well-known example of a normal number. In 1986, Schiffer provided the discrepancy of numbers in a family that includes the Champernowne constant. His proof relies on exponential sums. Here, we present a discrete and elementary proof specifically for the discrepancy of the Champernowne constant.

In a paper of 1976, Rauzy studied two complexity notions, $\underline{\beta}$ and $\overline{\beta}$, for infinite sequences over a finite alphabet. The function $\underline{\beta}$ is maximum exactly in the Borel normal sequences and $\overline{\beta}$ is minimum exactly in the sequences that, when added to any Borel normal sequence, the result is also Borel normal. Although the definition of $\underline{\beta}$ and $\overline{\beta}$ do not involve finite-state automata, we establish some connections between them and the lower $\underline{\rm dim}$ and upper $\overline{\rm dim}$ finite-state dimension (or other equivalent notions like finite-state compression ratio, aligned-entropy or cumulative log-loss of finite-state predictors). We show tight lower and upper bounds on $\underline{\rm dim}$ and $\overline{\rm dim}$ as functions of $\underline{\beta}$ and $\overline{\beta}$, respectively. In particular this implies that sequences with $\overline{\rm dim}$ zero are exactly the ones that that, when added to any Borel normal sequence, the result is also Borel normal. We also show that the finite-state dimensions $\underline{\rm dim}$ and $\overline{\rm dim}$ are essentially subadditive. We need two technical tools that are of independent interest. One is the family of local finite-state automata, which are automata whose memory consists of the last $k$ read symbols for some fixed integer $k$. We show that compressors based on local finite-state automata are as good as standard finite-state compressors. The other one is a notion of finite-state relational (non-deterministic) compressor, which can compress an input in several ways provided the input can always be recovered from any of its outputs. We show that such compressors cannot compress more than standard (deterministic) finite-state compressors.

Solid state quantum emitters are a prime candidate in distributed quantum technologies since they inherently provide a spin-photon interface. An ongoing challenge in the field, however, is the low photon extraction due to the high refractive index of typical host materials. This challenge can be overcome using photonic structures. Here, we report the integration of V2 centers in a cavity-based optical antenna. The structure consists of a silver-coated, 135 nm thin 4H-SiC membrane functioning as a planar cavity with a broadband resonance yielding a theoretical photon collection enhancement factor of 34. The planar geometry allows us to identify over 20 single V2 centers at room temperature with a mean (maximum) count rate enhancement factor of 9 (15). Moreover, we observe 10 V2 centers with a mean absorption linewidth below 80MHz at cryogenic temperatures. These results demonstrate a photon collection enhancement that is robust to the lateral emitter position.

Fix a finite alphabet. A necklace is a circular word. For positive integers $n$ and~$k$, a necklace is $(n,k)$-perfect if all words of length $n$ occur $k$ times but at positions with different congruence modulo $k$, for any convention of the starting position. We define the notion of a Lyndon pair and we use it to construct the lexicographically greatest $(n,k)$-perfect necklace, for any $n$ and $k$ such that $n$ divides~$k$ or $k$ divides~$n$. Our construction generalizes Fredricksen and Maiorana's construction of the lexicographically greatest de Bruijn sequence of order $n$, based on the concatenation of the Lyndon words whose length divide $n$.

Fiber-based distribution of triggered, entangled, single-photon pairs is a key requirement for the future development of terrestrial quantum networks. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for deterministic sources of on-demand polarization-entangled photon pairs. So far, the best QD polarization-entangled-pair sources emit in the near-infrared wavelength regime, where the transmission distance in deployed fibers is limited. Here, to be compatible with existing fiber network infrastructures, bi-directional polarization-conserving quantum frequency conversion (QFC) is employed to convert the QD emission from \unit[780]{nm} to telecom wavelengths. We show the preservation of polarization entanglement after QFC (fidelity to Bell state $F_{\phi^+, conv}=0.972\pm0.003$) of the biexciton transition. As a step towards real-world applicability, high entanglement fidelities ($F_{\phi^+, loop}=0.945\pm0.005$) after the propagation of one photon of the entangled pair along a \unit[35.8]{km} field installed standard single mode fiber link are reported. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrate a second polarization-conversing QFC step back to \unit[780]{nm} preserving entanglement ($F_{\phi^+, back}=0.903\pm0.005$). This further prepares the way for interfacing quantum light to various quantum memories.

A common goal in clinical trials is to conduct tests on estimated treatment effects adjusted for covariates such as age or sex. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) is often used in these scenarios to test the global null hypothesis of no treatment effect using an $F$-test. However, in several samples, the $F$-test does not provide any information about individual null hypotheses and has strict assumptions such as variance homoscedasticity. We extend the method proposed by Konietschke et al. (2021) to a multiple contrast test procedure (MCTP), which allows us to test arbitrary linear hypotheses and provides information about the global as well as the individual null hypotheses. Further, we can calculate compatible simultaneous confidence intervals for the individual effects. We derive a small sample size approximation of the distribution of the test statistic via a multivariate t-distribution. As an alternative, we introduce a Wild-bootstrap method. Extensive simulations show that our methods are applicable even when sample sizes are small. Their application is further illustrated within a real data example.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is the leading wide-bandgap semiconductor material, providing mature doping and device fabrication. Additionally, SiC hosts a multitude of optically active point defects (color centers), it is an excellent material for optical resonators due to its high refractive index and an outstanding material for mechanical resonators due to its high Q/f product. Moreover, epitaxial graphene layers can be grown as ultrathin electrodes and provide the potential to fine-tune color center resonances. These characteristics render SiC an ideal platform for experiments with single color centers towards quantum technologies including coupling color centers towards cooperative effects. A crucial step towards harnessing the full potential of the SiC platform includes technologies to create color centers with defined localization and density, e.g.\ to facilitate their coupling to nano-photonic structures and to observe cooperative effects. Here, silicon vacancy centers (V$_{Si}$) stand out as no impurity atom is needed and high-thermal budget annealing steps can be avoided. We report on the implementation of quantum entanglement distribution and quantum state teleportation over a 14.4-km urban dark-fiber link, which is partially underground, partially overhead, and patched in several stations. We characterize the link for its use as a quantum channel and realize its active polarization stabilization. Using a type-II cavity-enhanced SPDC photon pair source, a $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ single-ion quantum memory, and quantum frequency conversion to the telecom C-band, we demonstrate photon-photon entanglement, ion-photon entanglement, and teleportation of a qubit state from the ion onto a remote telecom photon, all realized over the urban fiber link., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, including appendix

The depiction of scanpaths from mobile eye-tracking recordings by thumbnails from the stimulus allows the application of visual computing to detect areas of interest in an unsupervised way. We suggest using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to identify such areas in stimuli. For a user-defined integer k, NMF produces an explainable decomposition into k components, each consisting of a spatial representation associated with a temporal indicator. In the context of multiple eye-tracking recordings, this leads to k spatial representations, where the temporal indicator highlights the appearance within recordings. The choice of k provides an opportunity to control the refinement of the decomposition, i.e., the number of areas to detect. We combine our NMF-based approach with visualization techniques to enable an exploratory analysis of multiple recordings. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of our approach with mobile eye-tracking data of an art gallery.

In this work, we introduce the Skorokhod energy of a simply connected domain. We show that among all domains solving the planar Skorokhod embedding problem, Gross solution generates the domain with the minimal Skorokhod energy.

Group-IV color centers in diamond are promising candidates for quantum networks due to their dominant zero-phonon line and symmetry-protected optical transitions that connect to coherent spin levels. The negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV) center possesses long electron spin lifetimes due to its large spin-orbit splitting. However, the magnetic dipole transitions required for microwave spin control are suppressed, and strain is necessary to enable these transitions. Recent work has shown spin control of strained emitters using microwave lines that suffer from Ohmic losses, restricting coherence through heating. We utilize a superconducting coplanar waveguide to measure SnV centers subjected to strain, observing substantial improvement. A detailed analysis of the SnV center electron spin Hamiltonian based on the angle-dependent splitting of the ground and excited states is performed. We demonstrate coherent spin manipulation and obtain a Hahn echo coherence time of up to $T_2 = 430\,\mu$s. With dynamical decoupling, we can prolong coherence to $T_2 = 10\,$ms, about six-fold improved compared to earlier works. We also observe a nearby coupling $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ spin which may serve as a quantum memory. Privacy-preserving analysis of confidential data can increase the value of such data and even improve peoples' lives. Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) can enable privacy-preserving analysis. However, FHE adds a large amount of computational overhead and its efficient use requires a high level of expertise. Compilers can automate certain aspects such as parameterization and circuit optimizations. This in turn makes FHE accessible to non-cryptographers. Yet, multi-party scenarios remain complicated and exclude many promising use cases such as analyses of large amounts of health records for medical research. Proxy re-encryption (PRE), a technique that allows the conversion of data from multiple sources to a joint encryption key, can enable FHE for multi-party scenarios. Today, there are no optimizing compilers for FHE with PRE capabilities. We propose HElium, the first optimizing FHE compiler with native support for proxy re-encryption. HElium features HEDSL, a domain-specific language (DSL) specifically designed for multi-party scenarios. By tracking encryption keys and transforming the computation circuit during compilation, HElium minimizes the number of expensive PRE operations. We evaluate the effectiveness of HElium's optimizations based on the real-world use case of the tumor recurrence rate, a well-known subject of medical research. We study function fields of curves over a base field $K$ which is either a global field or a large field having a separable field extension of degree divisible by $4$. We show that, for any such function field, Hilbert's 10th Problem has a negative answer, the valuation rings containing $K$ are uniformly existentially definable, and finitely generated integrally closed $K$-subalgebras are definable by a universal-existential formula. In order to obtain these results, we develop further the usage of local-global principles for quadratic forms in function fields to definability of certain subrings. Colour centres in silicon carbide emerge as a promising semiconductor quantum technology platform with excellent spin-optical coherences.However, recent efforts towards maximising the photonic efficiency via integration into nanophotonic structures proved to be challenging due to reduced spectral stabilities. Here, we provide a large-scale systematic investigation on silicon vacancy centres in thin silicon carbide membranes with thicknesses down to $0.25\,\rm\mu m$. Our membrane fabrication process involves a combination of chemical mechanical polishing, reactive ion etching, and subsequent annealing. This leads to highly reproducible membranes with roughness values of $3-4\,\rm\r{A}$, as well as negligible surface fluorescence. We find that silicon vacancy centres show close-to lifetime limited optical linewidths with almost no signs of spectral wandering down to membrane thicknesses of $0.7 \,\rm\mu m$. For silicon vacancy centres in thinner membranes down to $0.25\,\rm\mu m$, we observe spectral wandering, however, optical linewidths remain below $200\,\rm MHz$, which is compatible with spin-selective excitation schemes. Our work clearly shows that silicon vacancy centres can be integrated into sub-micron silicon carbide membranes, which opens the avenue towards obtaining the necessary improvements in photon extraction efficiency based on nanophotonic structuring., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, plus supplementary information

We extend the class of factorization theorems for non-global observables from fixed angular constraints to cross sections defined in terms of sequential jet clustering. The associated hard and soft functions depend not only on the directions of the hard partons, but also on their energy fractions. We derive the one-loop anomalous dimension of the hard functions that drives the leading-logarithmic resummation. The anomalous dimension imposes energy ordering, which simplifies the clustering sequence. We perform resummations for gap-between-jet observables defined with different jet algorithms and explain the effects of the clustering on the importance of secondary emissions and on the effective gap size., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

In 1972 Mykkeltveit proved that the maximum number of vertex-disjoint cycles in the de Bruijn graphs of order $n$ is attained by the pure cycling register rule, as conjectured by Golomb. We generalize this result to the tensor product of the de Bruijn graph of order $n$ and a simple cycle of size $k$, when $n$ divides $k$ or vice versa. We also develop counting formulae for a large family of cycling register rules, including the linear register rules proposed by Golomb.

We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM on-board triggers and sub-threshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma-rays from binary black hole mergers.

The age of big data has fueled expectations for accelerating learning. The availability of large data sets enables researchers to achieve more powerful statistical analyses and enhances the reliability of conclusions, which can be based on a broad collection of subjects. Often such data sets can be assembled only with access to diverse sources; for example, medical research that combines data from multiple centers in a federated analysis. However these hopes must be balanced against data privacy concerns, which hinder sharing raw data among centers. Consequently, federated analyses typically resort to sharing data summaries from each center. The limitation to summaries carries the risk that it will impair the efficiency of statistical analysis procedures. In this work we take a close look at the effects of federated analysis on two very basic problems, nonparametric comparison of two groups and quantile estimation to describe the corresponding distributions. We also propose a specific privacy-preserving data release policy for federated analysis with the $K$-anonymity criterion, which has been adopted by the Medical Informatics Platform of the European Human Brain Project. Our results show that, for our tasks, there is only a modest loss of statistical efficiency.

Long-distance entanglement distribution is the key task for quantum networks, enabling applications such as secure communication and distributed quantum computing. Here we report on novel developments extending the reach for sharing entanglement between a single $^{87}$Rb atom and a single photon over long optical fibers. To maintain a high fidelity during the long flight times through such fibers, the coherence time of the single atom is prolonged to 7 ms by applying a long-lived qubit encoding. In addition, the attenuation in the fibers is minimized by converting the photon's wavelength to the telecom S-Band via polarization-preserving quantum frequency conversion. This enables to observe entanglement between the atomic quantum memory and the emitted photon after passing 101 km of optical fiber with a fidelity better than 70.8$\pm$2.4%. The fidelity, however, is no longer reduced due to loss of coherence of the atom or photon but in the current setup rather due to detector dark counts, showing the suitability of our platform to realize city-to-city scale quantum network links., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, comments are welcome

The silicon-vacancy center in diamond holds great promise as a qubit for quantum communication networks. However, since the optical transitions are located within the visible red spectral region, quantum frequency conversion to low-loss telecommunication wavelengths becomes a necessity for its use in long-range, fiber-linked networks. This work presents a highly efficient, low-noise quantum frequency conversion device for photons emitted by a silicon-vacancy (SiV) center in diamond to the telecom C-band. By using a two-stage difference-frequency mixing scheme SPDC noise is circumvented and Raman noise is minimized, resulting in a very low noise rate of $10.4 \pm 0.7$ photons per second as well as an overall device efficiency of $35.6\, \%$. By converting single photons from SiV centers we demonstrate the preservation of photon statistics upon conversion., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We present a systematic formalism based on a factorization theorem in soft-collinear effective theory to describe non-global observables at hadron colliders, such as gap-between-jets cross sections. The cross sections are factorized into convolutions of hard functions, capturing the dependence on the partonic center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{\hat s}$, and low-energy matrix elements, which are sensitive to the low scale $Q_0\ll\sqrt{\hat s}$ characteristic of the veto imposed on energetic emissions into the gap between the jets. The scale evolution of both objects is governed by a renormalization-group equation, which we derive at one-loop order. By solving the evolution equation for the hard functions for arbitrary $2\to M$ jet processes in the leading logarithmic approximation, we accomplish for the first time the all-order resummation of the so-called "super-leading logarithms" discovered in 2006, thereby solving an old problem of quantum field theory. We study the numerical size of the corresponding effects for different partonic scattering processes and explain why they are sizable for $pp\to 2\,\text{jets}$ processes, but suppressed in $H/Z$ and $H/Z$+jet production. The super-leading logarithms are given by an alternating series, whose individual terms can be much larger than the resummed result, even in very high orders of the loop expansion. Resummation is therefore essential to control these effects.
