We apply field-cycling (FC) 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to access the reorientational susceptibility of two glass formers, m-tricresyl phosphate (m-TCP) and tri-butyl phosphate (TBP). Although FC 31P studies are still instrumentally demanding, together with FC 1H data, they provide site-resolved information. A crossover from dipolar relaxation at low frequencies to relaxation determined by chemical shift anisotropy at high frequencies and probed by conventional NMR is identified. A comparison is made between dielectric (DS) and depolarized light scattering (DLS) relaxation spectra demonstrating similar behavior close to Tg, including an excess wing contribution for m-TCP. The time constants of 31P NMR and DLS, probing the molecular core, agree. The 1H data monitoring the dynamics of the phenyl groups yield slightly shorter correlation times. At high temperatures, the DS relaxation spectra show a bimodal character: a fast component in agreement with 1H data, and a slow component much slower than 31P NMR and DLS suggest. We discuss the possible origins of the slow component. All time constants tend to merge toward Tg. Hence, we propose that site-specific dynamics disappear and a common α-relaxation establishes near Tg. In addition, we compare the diffusion coefficient D(T) determined by FC and static field gradient 1H NMR. Concerning TBP, we present FC 31P data of both α- and β-processes. Regarding the latter, we compare the DS and NMR susceptibility on absolute scale, yielding a significantly stronger β-relaxation in the 31P NMR spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We combine field-cycling (FC) relaxometry and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the rotational and translational dynamics associated with the glassy slowdown of glycerol. The 1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates R1(ω) probed in the FC measurements for different isotope-labelled compounds are computed from the MD trajectories for broad frequency and temperature ranges. We find high correspondence between experiment and simulation. Concerning the rotational motion, we observe that the aliphatic and hydroxyl groups show similar correlation times but different stretching parameters, while the overall reorientation associated with the structural relaxation remains largely isotropic. Additional analysis of the simulation results reveals that transitions between different molecular configurations are slow on the time scale of the structural relaxation at least at sufficiently high temperatures, indicating that glycerol rotates at a rigid entity, but the reorientation is slower for elongated than for compact conformers. The translational contribution to R1(ω) is well described by the force-free hard sphere model. At sufficiently low frequencies, universal square-root laws provide access to the molecular diffusion coefficients. In both experiment and simulation, the time scales of the rotational and translational motions show an unusually large separation, which is at variance with the Stokes–Einstein–Debye relation. To further explore this effect, we investigate the structure and dynamics on various length scales in the simulations. We observe that a prepeak in the static structure factor S(q), which is related to a local segregation of aliphatic and hydroxyl groups, is accompanied by a peak in the correlation times τ(q) from coherent scattering functions. The purpose of this study was to test whether individuals with hemiparesis who have varied gait speeds, which place them in different functional categories, benefit to the same extent from the application of FES.Methods: Thirty-six subjects with chronic hemiparesis demonstrating foot-drop and deficits in knee and/or hip control were fitted with a dual-channel FES system activating the dorsiflexors and hamstring muscles. Gait was assessed during a 2-minute walk test with and without stimulation. A second assessment was conducted after 6 weeks of daily use. Analysis was performed with the subjects stratified into three functional ambulation classes according to their initial gait categories.Results: The dual-channel FES improved the gait velocity of all three subgroups. No minimal gait velocity was required in order to gain benefits from FES. For example, subjects with limited household ambulation capabilities improved their gait speed by 63.3% (from 0.30 ± 0.09 m/sec to 0.49 ± 0.20 m/sec; P < 0.01), while subjects with functional community ambulation capabilities improved their gait speed by 25.5% (from 0.90 ± 0.11 m/sec to 1.13 ± 0.22 m/sec; P < 0.01).Conclusion: Dual-channel FES positively affects gait velocity in patients with chronic hemiparesis, regardless of their initial gait velocity. The distribution of visual attention can be evaluated using eye tracking, providing valuable insights into usability issues and interaction patterns. However, when used in real, augmented, and collaborative environments, new challenges arise that go beyond desktop scenarios and purely virtual environments. Toward addressing these challenges, we present a visualization technique that provides complementary views on the movement and eye tracking data recorded from multiple people in real‐world environments. Our method is based on a space‐time cube visualization and a linked 3D replay of recorded data. We showcase our approach with an experiment that examines how people investigate an artwork collection. The visualization provides insights into how people moved and inspected individual pictures in their spatial context over time. In contrast to existing methods, this analysis is possible for multiple participants without extensive annotation of areas of interest. Our technique was evaluated with a think‐aloud experiment to investigate analysis strategies and an interview with domain experts to examine the applicability in other research fields. Augmented Reality (AR) provides new ways for situated visualization and human‐computer interaction in physical environments. Current evaluation procedures for AR applications rely primarily on questionnaires and interviews, providing qualitative means to assess usability and task solution strategies. Eye tracking extends these existing evaluation methodologies by providing indicators for visual attention to virtual and real elements in the environment. However, the analysis of viewing behavior, especially the comparison of multiple participants, is difficult to achieve in AR. Specifically, the definition of areas of interest (AOIs), which is often a prerequisite for such analysis, is cumbersome and tedious with existing approaches. To address this issue, we present a new visualization approach to define AOIs, label fixations, and investigate the resulting annotated scanpaths. Our approach utilizes automatic annotation of gaze on virtual objects and an image‐based approach that also considers spatial context for the manual annotation of objects in the real world. Our results show, that with our approach, eye tracking data from AR scenes can be annotated and analyzed flexibly with respect to data aspects and annotation strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
