Abstract

International audience; Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites have recently emerged as excellent candidates to fabricate flexible and small piezoelectric generators for portable devices. Among various techniques used to nanostructure polarized PVDF, the track-etching represents a new route for manufacturing nanostructured composite thin films. The moderate influence of irradiation on the piezoelectric response of polarized PVDF makes possible the use of this technique. In this way, a nanostructured composite based on polarized thin PVDF films comprising embedded nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) was fabricated. The nanostructured PVDF/Ni NWs composites were tested under bending conditions using a homemade pressure cell. Due to the presence of NWs, an increase of five-fold the initial dielectric permittivity, in the low-frequency range, was observed. It suggested the presence of an interfacial polarization at the PVDF/Ni interface. With respect to the etched PVDF, the nanostructured PVDF/Ni NWs composites exhibited a non-negligible enhancement by 2.5 times the piezoelectric efficiency. This result was attributed to the increased Au/Ni NWs electrode surface.

Abstract

Atomic layer deposition (ALD), a gas-phase thin film deposition technique based on repeated, self-terminating gas-solid reactions, has become the method of choice in semiconductor manufacturing and many other technological areas for depositing thin conformal inorganic material layers for various applications. ALD has been discovered and developed independently, at least twice, under different names: atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) and molecular layering. ALE, dating back to 1974 in Finland, has been commonly known as the origin of ALD, while work done since the 1960s in the Soviet Union under the name "molecular layering" (and sometimes other names) has remained much less known. The virtual project on the history of ALD (VPHA) is a volunteer-based effort with open participation, set up to make the early days of ALD more transparent. In VPHA, started in July 2013, the target is to list, read and comment on all early ALD academic and patent literature up to 1986. VPHA has resulted in two essays and several presentations at international conferences. This paper, based on a poster presentation at the 16th International Conference on Atomic Layer Deposition in Dublin, Ireland, 2016, presents a recommended reading list of early ALD publications, created collectively by the VPHA participants through voting. The list contains 22 publications from Finland, Japan, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and United States. Up to now, a balanced overview regarding the early history of ALD has been missing; the current list is an attempt to remedy this deficiency.

Abstract

To develop material with good photocatalytic properties for organic compound degradation and bacterial removal, we produced Ag/TiO2 and BN–Ag/TiO2 composite nanofibers that included controlled amounts of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets and silver (Ag). After annealing at 500 °C under air, we used scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller analysis, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible reflectance spectroscopy and room temperature photoluminescence to investigate the morphological, structural and optical properties of all samples. The photocatalytic tests using methylene blue under visible light, in repeated and long-term applications, showed that the photodegradation activity of BN(5 wt%)–Ag(3 wt%)/TiO2 composite nanofibers was 17.2 and 2.3 times higher than that of pure TiO2 and Ag(3 wt%)/TiO2 nanofibers, respectively. In antibacterial tests using Gram-negative Escherichia coli, 3 hours of incubation with BN(5 wt%)–Ag(3 wt%)/TiO2 composite nanofibers killed all bacteria. These results indicate that the synthesized BN(5 wt%)–Ag(3 wt%)/TiO2 composite nanofibers can be considered to be a multifunctional material for photodegradation and antibacterial applications. Abstract

Detection of biomarkers is essential for disease prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis of early stage treatment. Ocular fluid is an extracellular fluid excreted from the tear gland. Several important markers from ocular fluid have been identified having significant clinical diagnostic value for various diseases. The contact lens is disposable, relatively cheap and serves as a platform to obtain direct intimate contact with ocular fluid and is therefore an attractive and a promising platform for point-of-care diagnostic tests. Here, we present an innovative concept of a wearable contact lens biosensor with nanoengineered biorecognition architecture based on a Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique on the contact lens surface. This technique enables us to deposit multiple layers of biomolecules to create biorecognition layer under a mild aqueous physiological temperature and pH conditions. The fabrication of the biorecognition layer is simply through physical adsorption and has no restrictions with respect to the substrate size and topology (i.e. contact lens). The thickness of the resulting biorecognition layer is only hundreds of nanometers, and hence has minimal influence on the overall thickness of the contact lens, thus preserving the optical properties of the contact lens for vision correction. We have demonstrated that eye inflammation biomarkers such as interleukin (IL) can be captured in vitro with the contact lens, thus facilitating colorimetric affinity bioassays to measure the amount of interleukin. An in vitro ocular model composed of hydrogel-based artificial cornea and microfluidics was developed to study the performance of the contact lens biosensing platform. The contact platform was able to detect IL-1α down to the physiological concentration, which is in the range of pg mL-1. Abstract: Impregnation of interlaced SiC@SiO2 nanocables (SiC NWs sheathed by SiO2 coatings) into a ZnO sol at 0°C yielded, after thermal treatment up to 600°C under argon, SiC@SiO2@ZnO nanostructures. These novel nanostructures consist in SiC@SiO2 nanocables covered by numerous agglomerated ZnO nanoparticles. The latter are less than 5nm in diameter. This result is to our knowledge the first example of a physical templating technique involving SiC-based nanowires. Moreover, we have obtained localized ZnO nanoparticles. This localization can be of interests for a further study of their physical properties. When a similar experiment was conducted with pure SiC nanowires, there was no interaction between the nanowires (NWs) and the solution, resulting in the formation of agglomerated ZnO NPs embedded into the 3D NWs network.
