Mining activity is one of the main sources to pollute soil, water and plants. An analysis of soil and plant samples around the Atrevida mining area in Catalonia (NE Spain) was preformed to determine potentially harmful elements (PHEs). Soil and plant samples were taken at eight locations around the mining area. The topsoil (0-15 cm) samples were analysed for physico-chemical properties by standard methods, by ICP-MS for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn, and were microwave-digested. Plant, root and shoot samples were digested separately, and heavy metals were analysed by AAS. Translocation factor (TF), biological concentration factor (BCF) and biological accumulation factor (BAF) were determined to assess the tolerance strategies developed by native species and to evaluate their potential for phytoremediation purposes. Soil pH was generally acid (5.48-6.72), with high soil organic matter (SOM) content and a sandy loamy or loamy texture. According to the agricultural soil values in southern Europe, our PHEs concentrations exceeded the toxicity thresholds. The highest root content of the most studied PHEs appeared in Thymus vulgaris L. and Festuca ovina L., while Biscutella laevigata L. accumulated more PHEs in shoots. The TF values were > 1 in B. laevigata L., but BAF obtained < 1, except Pb. B. laevigata L., and can be considered potentially useful for phytoremediation for having the capacity to restrict the accumulation of large PHEs amounts in roots and Pb translocation to shoots.

Computational evaluation of leading edge erosion remains challenging due to the high-strain rate loading conditions caused by impact of the wind turbine blade leading edge with rain droplets and other environmental particles. Here, a methodology is proposed for obtaining an S-N curve which can be used for impact fatigue evaluation of hyper- and viscoelastic leading edge protection systems for wind turbine blades, in the relevant strain rate domain. Two material systems (hard and soft polyurethane (PU)) are characterised experimentally by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and static tensile tests. Time-temperature superposition is applied to the raw DMA data in order to obtain the material’s mastercurve, describing its visco-elastic behaviour in an expanded strain rate domain. The Yeoh (hyperelastic) and prony series (viscoelastic) material model parameters are calibrated and form the input for a 2D-axisymmetric finite element model, in which Single Point Impact Fatigue Test (SPIFT) testing conditions are simulated. The stress field experienced by the coating during SPIFT testing is obtained and combined with the experimental measurements, allowing the determination of the material systems S-N curve, in the relevant strain rate domain. Results for a hard and soft PU coating system are compared with rain erosion test (RET) data. The RET data shows higher lifetime for the hard PU systems, a tendency that can be predicted when comparing the S-N curve for the hard and soft PU system. This methodology can be utilised in computational lifetime evaluation of leading edge coating systems. Furthermore, the methodology has the potential to partly alleviate the need of RET in the development and comparison of next-generation leading edge protection systems.

Our motivation for investigating the rain and wind climate in the Danish Seas is recent news on leading edge erosion on wind turbine blades at several offshore wind farms. The costs related to turbine blade repair are high. In this study we investigate the rain and wind climate at five coastal and three inland weather stations in Denmark. The coastal stations have much higher frequency of heavy rain than inland stations, in high wind conditions. The hypothesis is that leading edge erosion mainly develops during these few extreme events. The leading edge erosion rates and expected lifetime are calculated assuming similar turbines to be in operation at the eight site. The results of two damage increment models show similar results for the coastal stations but differ for two out of three inland sites. The kinetic energy model shows four times high erosion rates at the coastal sites versus the two inland sites. The accumulated rain model shows site independent erosion. The expected life is on average 3 years of the two damage models. The erosion safe mode control, i.e. reduced wind turbine tip speed during extreme rain events, is presented with relative profit from 2.8 to 4.8%.
